Everyone: “likes reading books”
School: “read this one, it’s great”
Everyone: “well now I am not doing it”

I just wanna type this, F*ick
Honestly though
RELATABLE!!!!!!!!
I mean... not completely wrong lol
But if my English teacher recommends me a book, I’ll probably read it.
Child: Likes reading
School: Oh you like reading? How about you read this book for an English assignment.
Child: Well now I don't like it
It’s just how life works
How do you know a child’s brain
@@ethantoonshd3119 Just a guess: because he was a child at one point too.
Intellectual oh yeah I wasn’t thinking
Pro tip: If you tell a child to do something, they will not do it. And when you tell them to not do something, they will do it.
Common sense, schools.
I love how teachers see us reading our own books and tell us to stop, and then they take them away. Then they put new books in front of us that we could learn just as much literature and spelling and vocabulary from as our old books. They force us to memorize these books that we don’t know half the meanings of half the words.
I didn't read "real books" (not comics) much as a kid, but when I started going to a new school with more advanced classes so I could eventually choose a specialty (science for me), I often brought a book like Warriors, How To Train Your Dragon, Harry Potter or something else like that, and I would read the book in the breaks in the classrooms, sometimes a little bit in the beginning of the class or continuation, just to finish a page so I could mark where I left off, and the teachers allowed me to read.
I dunno if you're talking about reading while class is going or just reading at all, like even during the breaks.
I knew I had to pay attention in class, so I just read in the breaks, coz I didn't want to get called out on - I don't know if they would actually do that, but I didn't wanna take the risk - but at the same time I often rather wanted to read my own book than sit and listen to the teacher talk and talk. Fortunately the classes often came with videos or pictures on the smartboards, so it wasn't too bad most of the time.
Hearing about how bad the US educational system is and what decisions they make and how bad people had it when they were students, astounds me. I hope the US gets better at schooling than it is now.
If everyone is reading their own books the teacher has to get knowledge on all of them, you can't have a class discussion about a book that only one person read.
Also making us read some of the pretty fucked up stuff in said books out loud lmao
Well said, you are so right! I believe children should have more of a say over education as the Academics are destroying it. If they were team players and actually listened to creative people, then we would not have 9 Million illiterate adults in the UK because of State Education. If your in school create a Council so you can get your voices heard. Good luck. Education is supposed to be fun, not stressful and boring.
NOBODY MESS UP THE LIKES ITS AT 420

Jaiden: "School kinda ruined books for me"
School ruins everything it touches by making it into a requirement smh
Exactly!
Too true
Music? Playtime? Learning? The very concept of group association? Yup, ruined forever.
My happiness: Gone
My hopes and dreams: Gone
Everything that is important to me: Gone
This all happened because of school
They ruined music, singing and theatre for me
I’m gonna be honest, I love reading, but I am very VERY picky about what I read. I also agree with the sentiment that if you are forced to read something, it isn’t as fun as it would be to read it voluntarily. 😊
Agreed
Me too
same
To be honest that's with most things in life. There's a satisfaction to doing stuff like cleaning dishes or mopping the floor yourself that makes it feel like you are in control of your life. But then you're forced to and it can be a pain. Heck even learning by yourself can be fun.
Same XD. my accelerated reader teacher gave me a book and said to try that one instead of the ones I was in the middle of the series for and I took it and I read 1 page and already hated it.. she let me keep reading the ones I wanted
Honestly I deeply agree with you. I don't hate reading, but beeing forced to read a book that was written sometime in the 18 century is really boring and just sucks happiness and motivation out of my body. I don't understand why it's so important for some schools to learn about them
I think the only book I enjoyed reading that we were made to read in English was "To Kill a Mockingbird" because it was about a girl who was taught to read by her dad and was smarter than her teacher back in the day when girls weren't seen as smart. That and "The Outsiders." All the other books gave me a negative stigma towards reading, especially the ones regarding the holocaust. They were depressing and traumatizing and made me scared to pick up another book for a very long time.
If I wasn't in Special ED Reading, the only book in the regular reading class I liked was "Of Mice and Men".
If only schools would realize that people don’t like doing things when they’re forced to. I love writing, but if I have to write an essay, it’s going to be shit lmao
exactly lmao. i used to love writing but now when I pour my heart into an essay and get an 80 it makes me so unmotivated
ORCA OMG RIGHT! I love to write stuff but when having to write a essay on a specific thing I hate it, Id prefer is they did what my 7th grade reading teacher did and let us write a short story on what ever the heck we wanted
Sooo true
True, I love drawing but when the art teacher asks me to draw something it turns out like poop and I hate it.
I remember being so frustrated doing creative writing assignments because it’s *creative writing*, I’m supposed to *enjoy* it, but when it’s an assignment I just worry and think it sounds terrible and all that. In fact, a writing workshop about depth about caused me to not like writing short stories anymore because now I never feel like it’s good enough! Yay?
Moral of the story?
Forced reading sucks, free reading’s cool.
yes
This is exactly what I was thinking
E
I agree
yes
from my personal experience, reading is fun when it's of your own free will. i think the reason a lot of youth today don't like reading is because of schools. schools either assign books and you're forced to read them and then most likely write an essay on them, or they say to pick your own book but even still then you're being forced to read. if we encourage people to read out of their own free will, i think then more youth will get into reading. but of course this is based on my personal opinions / experiences.
And when we complain people say "you kids on your screens all day" or "why don't you read more? It's fun"
Jaiden * I don’t like reading and I have a cat allergy* ❤ love this your the best
my school made us keep a record of how much we read (page numbers, which book, short synopsis of what happened) and i LOATHED IT. it made every time i read something feel like a chore to the point i just stopped doing it because even when i wanted to read freely, id still have to make it into work because of the damn record
Yeah... I cheat on those.
At this point, I would've just burned all my books then and there
(except for you, Wings of Fire. You're an amazing book series)
Yeah I remember my middle school had a similar thing where you had to read 90/95 pages a week. I just straight up lied cuz they never bothered to check if we actually did or not
Dude. You could have just read two pages. And write down what the characters did. That’s what our teachers did in elementary school. Until I got to the 6th grade
@@xaviersaavedra7442 yeah i know. the point of the comment is that it made me not enjoy reading. i had to write it down EVERY time i read something, so if i read something for fun it turned into something id have to always write about after. making it no longer fun

I would just like to say, I feel the pain of hating reading because of school. I just very recently started reading again, mostly to develop an attention span again, but I stopped reading in high school and most of college because school took all the joy out of books. I've only very recently started it again, and it's been fun. But the second someone forces me to read I will abandon all hope of literature again for the sake of spite.
I actually felt really similar about this. I love reading fiction novels, but the more people force me to try to read them, the less I want to and I eventually end up not reading at all. I think it’s wonderful that people are trying to encourage reading (I wouldn’t mind if they did a bit more of that now) but if they continue forcing kids to read books they don’t enjoy, they’ll stop it altogether. It’s one of the reasons I hate reading nonfiction books, my teachers always forced me to read them growing up.

Okay I was introduced to The Scarlet Letter via a manga adaptation and the story unironically slaps
It was born to be a graphic novel and I love adaptations that can make classic stories more accessible (and understandable!) to a younger generation
I think we read the same adaptation! I'm not from US so that's the only version I read. (Because I wanted to know the story) some of the dialogue was still old fashioned but I could comprehend it
@@androgynouscloud8726 I loved it, I actually got it for free on a field trip to a comics warehouse because they were so thrilled a kid my age was interested in a classic story that they offered to give it to me in exchange for a book report. Still my favorite book
Reading is nothing but staring at a dead tree and hallucinating
I like how reading is seen as a 'healthy habit.' Here I am staying up until 4am sobbing and mourning the loss of my favourite characters and having no social life because the real world sucks.
i've never related so much to a person on the internet
You ever have those moments where you read a book or watch a show and movie and relate to the characters, while loving the world and want to live in it, only to realize you live in the real crappy world? Welcome to my life.
Literally the exact same reason I play video games. It’s fine to get sad over characters, but staying up all night in an uncomfortable position that most likely hurts your neck isn’t. That’s why I hate it when adults say, “everything in moderation” when you play video games for hours, but they don’t say it when you read for hours because “reading can never be bad”
someone who understands my pains
Hedwig noooo, literally every other cool character in harry potter, lord of the rings and percy jackson noooo. This also happens to every serie at Netflix
Reading isn’t necessarily bad, it’s the fact that school ruins it. You have to memorize, and read terrible books.
School is a pain.
when i’m forced to read a book..
it doesn’t end up read.
i only read the stuff i’m actually curious about..
not so true. schools can give you good books, and bad ones. depends on wether you are learning in a public or non public (lol) school.
Its not the books that are bad. Its the work they assign. Its like "oh cool Animal Farm is about communism thats cool", then FUCK YOU WRITE A 2 PAGE ESSAY ON HOW THE PIG IS STALIN AND NOW RESEARCH RUSSIA
I started hating reading cuz it felt forced like my school and parents made me do it
Relatable!
As an adult, looking back, I may have had a case of ADHD, so whenever I was forced to read I'd get bored and my mind would just start wondering off...
I've never actually finished a novel book... I did go through a phase with poetry book, that was nice... but I don't believe I've ever finished any other books
School making me read actually fulled my love for reading even more! I honestly think I was the only one in my class that didn't complain when we had a reading assignment.

This resonates so strongly with me, I once liked reading, but having to do English and literature at school has just ruined my relationship with reading, I can't shake my feelings of reading being dry, boring and having to think of the deeper meaning (instead of just enjoying the book). Reading is fun until you need to do it, same thing with a few other things (example)
My mom bought a trampoline one summer, and baby grand piano that autumn.
I would go and play the piano randomly, and just play a few songs by ear, which turned out pretty decent, and my parents heard this. They also got to see how much fun me and my sisters had on that trampoline.
So, instead of leaving me to enjoy it, they made the rule that I need to spend at least an _hour_ every day playing piano, and they would make me and my sisters go on the trampoline every once in a while, even if we were busy.
You can't expect a kid who randomly plays a few notes for like, 8 minutes to now be able to sit down for an hour and play a masterpiece

I feel like there is 1 mistake that people make while reading a book that is exclusive to those who are really into books or at least one particular book series: They finish it to quickly.
While finishing a 500 page book in a day may sound impressive, you barely let any of part of any chapter sink in before moving onto the next one. Its like going to an art museum but sprinting through every single room until you've seen all the art. You don't take any time to admire it.
Since elementary school, I've always loved reading books and novels. I could spend the entire day just reading book after book, and would read and re-read my favorite stories.
But when I started high school, I was forced to read the inch-thick, brick-heavy, ridiculously expensive textbooks with no time to read my own books. As time went on, it made me begin resent reading as a whole, and i read less and less, until I barely touched anything book-related when I didn't have to.
Even worse, my kindle broke down, and that was where I stored almost all of my favorite books, and it really put me off reading for quite a while. (I wasn't keen to get a new one because I didn't want to distract myself from my studies).
But today, I have just finished my IGCSEs and I hope to pick my old hobby back up, now that it no longer feels like a chore.
the phrase "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink" really applies here because a lot of schools don't seem to realize that if you keep pushing the horse's head in the water it'll just drown.
While that's true let's be honest if kids weren't forced to go to school a majority of them wouldn't go. Same thing goes for school work and stuff. I think as we age we just accept that it's something we have to do and eventually just go with the flow and it helps us learn alot of things we wouldn't have learned from just playing video games all day. For me, my apathy toward reading didn't hit me hard until High School. The reason why my apathy hit me there and not in Middle School like most people is because in Middle School they still had some book series that I enjoyed from Elementary School. Those books are Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Big Nate. During Middle School, I was introduced to comic strip compilations like Calvin and Hobbes and Mutts and I was also introduced to the Dog Man books by the creator of Captain Underpants, Dav Pilkey. So while I was raised to old-time books during my Middle School years and my time spent reading did take a bit of a backseat during that time, At least in Middle School the magic of reading still lived on for me, even if it did take a bit of a backseat. High School, on the other hand, was when the magic was just GONE for me. The books that I liked reading in Middle School were gone, the books recommended by the school librarian were just melodramas or plain dramas, books felt a bit too layered for my liking, and I was spending way too much time either watching UA-cam or doing something else. While I did read some good books during my High School years, most prominently the Bone books by Jeff Smith and "Me, Earl, and The Dying Girl" by Jesse Andrews, and "El Deafo" by Cece Bell, The Magic of reading for me died during my High School years.

A good, mid-skill book i'd recommend (for any of you) is Nimbus by Jane Eldridge. It's about a black cat who gains magic dream powers after battling a demon that keeps stealing her human's life force....and then his aunt THROWS HER IN THE DUMP WITHOUT TELLING HIM because she thought the cat stole his breath while he was sleeping (that's a stupid myth about cats), and her quest throughout the series is to get away from this old witch-lady who's waiting for her cat to come back from the dead and her group of unhinged replacements she's been keeping hostage and get back to her human to prevent the demon from killing him. It has 31 chapters and I read it within 6 hours.
Used to love reading. Then around 6th grade, i was forced to have a reading log that was worth quite a bit of my grade, and for the life of me, i could never remember to log my books. I nearly failed the class, and was told that i had "so much wasted potential." It really hurt my feelings for some reason. Suddenly, i felt like reading really bothered me. Nothing centered around reading was fun. To this day, reading seems more like a chore than anything.
“Reading is boring.”

I kind of like reading sometimes, but honestly I like it the most from games with lots of story and dialogue. I hate how schools always make us read things with super secret motives and deep symbolism of stuff I just don’t get or care about, instead of letting us read something fictional and fun and teaching us about what makes an actual good and enjoyable story
The only punishment that works on me is when my mom locks up my books
I love reading that much
Kid: I like reading
School: Now we're gonna force you to do it
Kid: *Well now I am not doing it*
Yessssss
True lol, I used to only read comic books-
Lol. I still love reading. I hate teachers who force me to listen to other people reading.
"Yes, children. Read this book you may not like, but you have to finish it. Also, you have to answer a stupid question about the author's purpose, even though their true reason for writing the book is to have fun and pay bills."
Same with me I hate force reading
Books are like frogs. They're cute. But as soon as your professor tells you that you will need to cut it open, dissect its internal organs so that you may further analyze the complexity of its intestinal lining, it ruins frogs for you. Now, whenever you see one, instead of imagining the cute little amphibians that they are, you instead think about the undigested sludge that fell out of that one frog's intestines that one time.
Dis gud
Dis real gud
It's true, especially when they force you to analyze it, it destroyed the charm of thinking about the subtext and other meanings or symbolisms and stuff like that. It took me years to reignite my love for reading, and it was when I wasn't expected to think about what the author's messgaes and I could just be happy with what I was reading.
Stop reminding me of 6th grade. ;-;
I see what you mean. I never really took the time to think about the books I've read. Because I had to worry about the word count, and making my analysis sound smart and technically correct.
I was not a big fan reading little kid when I was growing. I kind of go into reading about how I like to read. To start off, what is your favorite non-fiction and start there, u might find good book to read
I freaking love knowing the symbolism and meaning behind books. Everybody thinks I’m a freak because I actually enjoy English class.
Jaiden: “Why I don’t like reading”

It's gonna be back next two weeks for me
*It's not enough* ):
I have began to get back into reading. I rather had the experience of wanting to read harder books but my teachers at school wanted me to read at the level that the other kids were at, which then stumped my reading growth since I wanted to read harder things. I was actually asking questions when reading the harder books, getting curiosity in the world the characters were a part of or when the book was taking place, but with the books my school was teaching us, I was the one answering the questions fast. My love for reading began to dim, so I am currently trying to bring back my fire for reading since I want a career in writing books.
In short, if you have the smarts for the big books, go for em! But don't use them for school assignments because then the teacher will punish you for it.
One thing i remember in english was we had to read a book called the outsiders, and i faked reading it completely and got away with it. We had to discuss about it and i never raised my hand and my teacher never called on me- I think the only time he did was how it made us feel when we were left on a cliffhanger, and actually had an answer!
Jaiden: I’m gonna go read this book
Someone: Go read this book
Jaiden: Well now I’m not doing it
Lol
😂
That's actually me too tbh I don't like being "bossed" around

I did that recently before my grandma came over 2 our house
First of I don't believe we all need to read, I find reading relaxing and so amazing that it fills my life with so much joy,
Not everyone's joy and relaxation gotta be the same one that works for me,
And there are so many ways to learn, reading isn't the only one, going to ceminars, watching educational videos and etc!~
Honestly Jaiden I feel you. Reading was and is my hobby, but when I was in school I had to read so many books I hit burn out. One day I picked one up again because I was at B&N and remembered why I loved it. Though honestly if you were to read a book try going postal, It's hands down the most light hearted and funniest book I've ever read.
Everyone: “I hate reading books for school”
Coronavirus: “allow me to introduce my self”
LOL Ive seen this same exact comment 4 times now
Haha
we still got online school :/

@@catlover78 yep and it sucks in my opinion
being forced to read vs. wanting to read has the same energy of when you are cleaning and then your parents walk in and shout "yeah you'd better be cleaning"
or when you’re about to do chores and then your parents would go tell you to do it, really makes me not want to do anything anymore. i guess being told what to do just sucks
@@iregretmylifechoices5910 oh i second this so much. like, i'm about to do something out of my own volition and motivation and now you (parent) went and made it look like i'm just reluctantly following orders
Ikkrrr
yeah, when your feeling independent and then someone tells you to do something likes it's expected of you at all times makes you feel less independent like what you are doing is not a change in modivation. Like if you are cleaning you room for once to try and improve you mood and impress your parents, then they just tell you to do it like, "YEAH, I was GONNA, but THEN you made it like you had to TELL ME or else I "wouldn't do it" which makes me seem lazy and under your power. I WAS DOING IT ON MY OWN TERMS!!! Now it looks like I only did it because YOU ordered me to!!! Now I feel like I'm you slave, and don't want to clean my room anymore. THANKS ALOT for killing my mood. This is your fault, and now you can go tell everyone hoe lazy and unmotivated I am. "ugh"
also when they do that and you stop they assume you're doing it out of pure spite when in reality they have removed your desire and motivation
I like to listen to a audiobook while reading along with the book, I have a really great imagination and can visualize scenes and characters.
If there is already a movie or tv series about the book I’m reading/want to read I may either read the book first or watch the movie/show first. For those who may have trouble visualizing may want to try watching the movie first, get the idea about the characters and everything, and then try reading the book/ listening to the audiobook.
i’m definitely not watching this at 6am bc i woke up randomly
oh yeah also i’m trying not to wake up my brothers by laughing 😂

English teacher: As you can clearly see, the fact that the character rides on a horse means that he is going to McDonalds, but since this book is 3 years and 45 days after "To Kill a Mocking Bird" was released to Britain, This clearly means that it is meant to signify he is as peaceful as the dispute between the Coke-cola company and Disney for the right for the bunnies to be classified as fish which is clearly the basis for the declaration of independence!!!!!
Writer: uhh.... he rides on a horse to go fast...
Armand Bier “the curtains are blue to symbolize his melancholy sense of being forgotten and his inherently deep rooted depression that hasn’t been recognized as of yet, also it means communism.”
author: “blue is my favorite color and i wanted them curtains to be blue.
Shakespeare: “what, you egg”
Teachers: “he calls him egg to symbolize the endless circle of his meaningless life”
Shakespeare “egg is funny”
okay it seems like that, but there really is deeper themes in books and stuff. It's really interesting if you do it at higher levels.

you should read magnus chase. I know you said you wouldn't but the humor is constant and exactly your style. Its also a series so if you like then you can keep going
My issue with reading now is that the simple idea of reading invokes the fear of missing out on something important elsewhere. Somehow constantly watching UA-cam videos (mostly commentary) for stimulation is more important than reading a book.
When I think about it, I have the idea that I’d need music to satisfy me, but then I think it’d take me out of the story depending on the situation going on in the book and _again,_ there is totally something more important I could be listening to at this moment in time. Feels like I’d be wasting precious minutes and hours of my life that as of my current age, would be nothing compared to the several decades longer I have left 0-0
