This may not be my only comment-I just had to stop and exclaim over how much I love the color story in your video. Starting with your warm white shirt. Then, the background of the soft white walls, the almost frosted look of the mini trees, the white/gray/silver of the wreath over your calendar. So calming and soothing, as beautiful as a snowy field in moonlight. The little pops of color, from your advents, your calendar, your sock garlands, your yarns, all look extra cheerful and sparkling. I appreciate all your artistry and caring that went into creating the setting for the calm oasis you are offering. And as a total aside, that shirt and you….wow! If you need to dress up for a party this year, wear that. Total classic beauty. Heads will turn, in the best possible way! XO harpingJanet

Your video was a visual delight. The serenity of your surroundings and your beautiful white top really set the calming tone. I also really appreciated your comment about "selfish knitting". I feel like if a person sewed all of their own clothes, others would admire their resourcefulness so why should knitting for oneself be considered selfish. Love your perspective and thank you for bringing it to light so other knitters can show themselves love guilt-free.

Totally agree that self-care is so important. Didn't realize until this year how much "I" was lost in the day-to-day. Now I am lucky enough that I have time to make for me AND others. You are so genuine and honest, and I love that about your channel ❤

Thank you Dennis!!!! Love your way with words.
I was just typing the words self care to describe knitting for myself … and then you said it!! Yes yes yes!
I have served others my whole life.. I have sacrificed self for others. These last couple of years I have claimed my right to care for my own soul and wellbeing and that takes the form of knitting special treasures for me… 🧶💜
Enjoy your contributions so very much. Seasons Greetings!

People can say or think what they want, but those of us who understand the importance of self care know that doing ANYTHING that helps you get through the day, feel good and be a better person is smart. That absolutely includes knitting (creating items) for yourself. I've given things I've made for myself to people who have expressed true enthusiasm for the things. (I can always make the thing again 😊 if I really want it). Knitting for knit worthy people makes me happy, too.

Selfish knitting...pfft. who comes up with this stuff?
Thank you for sharing your Advents. This is my first year buying Advents, and I stumbled upon The Cozy Knitter by chance this summer and bought the Advent (hey cool, 24 stripes!), but didn't realize until late November that they corresponded to the 24 days before Christmas.
I loved all the socks you shared.. thank you! I've been knitting about 3 years and socks are my favorite too 😊.
    Have a wonderful week!

I agree with you that the term selfish knitting is not the most appropriate way of calling ourselves when we knit for us... It's more like guilt-knitting (though again, it's not a happy term). People always ask us for knit garments, and most of us need more time (and will )to knit for everyone else. I do occasionally, but it is a lot of work and time I don't have. I want to knit things that make me happy and enjoy (and have the freedom of not completing something if I don't want to, take as long as I can, etc.).
Having said that, what a fantastic thing to have something hand-made be given as a gift! Priceless

Hello Denise. I can’t wait to see all of your Vlogs for December. I am glad you are making the vlogs based on your own time frame. Thanks for sharing your life. I agree. It’s hard to make things for people who do not appreciate the time and love you put into a project. I have reverted to making only baby blankets. For those in the family Under 10 yrs old. They seem to appreciate them more.

Denise, thank you so much for a wonderful episode and all the goodies that you showed us. You are a phenomenal person.!
I have all the exact Advents you have minus the 24t skein one, might try that one next year . But I bought two of the Freckled Whimsey’s because I’m going to knit one starting with one end, color and the other with the other end so I have same color palette but in different order. Next year I’m gonna get two of each Advent so I can do the same thing. I only knit socks for myself and sometimes I give my daughter a pair because I know she appreciates the effort in time that goes into knitting a pair of socks.
I’m excited for your Volgmas videos and sharing! Excited to learn about those toes too:) Thank you for all you do for the knitting community. 😊

Happy Vlogmas! ❤ your advents. Always loved a good mystery, so I will wait to see how they work up.
Your wonderful voice kept me company as I knit up a pair of Christmas socks. I wasn't sure how the yarn was going to work up, so I'm putting in an afterthought heel. It's not as scary as it sounds since I watched your tutorial. I knit the umbrella heel and toe per Kay Jones.
The anatomical toe sounds comfortable. I'm all about a custom fit.
I crochet gifts regularly as it is much faster for me. I usually make blankets and they are well received and used. Knitting is meditative for me and also a brain cell challenge since I took it up 3 years ago. I try to learn something new with each project so I feel a deadline for completion would not motivate me +/or encourage me to make more mistakes.
    Thanks again!

Oh I like the unique anatomical toes! I thought that was going to be 5 toes per sock and shuddered! lol My son’s teacher said he had done an anatomically correct drawing in class a was concerned because it had male and female genitalia. (Probably shouldn’t say this! He did it to torture her! He could always find the person’s button to set them afire. He died in an accident the next year so all that angst was for no reason. I trying to teach myself to remember the best things he gave me in his short life. Changing the word anatomical to be a mind giggle was one.) Thank you for that precious memory laugh!!

You need a shirt that says "Life Happens." Not for you but as a PSA for people around you.😊😊 No fuss. You do you Boo. As always great video.

It's nice that you mentioned that, Denise ! I'm feeling so guilty that this year I didn't make any gifts and instead of that I started a few projects for myself. I've been crocheting for 3 years and just recently made the very first vest for myself. That makes me feeling so selfish, but there are so many cute things I would love to have! Isn't it wild that I'm wearing machineknited shawl, just because I can't put myself as a priority on my makings list?!

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  6 місяців тому

Oh Alek, we need to change that perspective. It is not written anywhere that once you've learned a skill you must share it with the world. Make for yourself!!! Life is way to precious and short for guilt. There are much bigger things to feel guilty about than crocheting for yourself.

Denise, if I nodded my head any harder throughout the episode I may give myself a crick in the neck! LOL I also dislike the phrase "selfish knitting" for all the reasons you stated. Self-care is NOT selfish. Using our skills and talents to explore and play for our own enjoyment is NOT selfish. And though I know the lighting was causing stress later in the video, the beginning was absolutely ethereal in setting - the décor, the creamy winter white ambiance, etc. I don't think some people realize that (most) people on UA-cam aren't recording in a studio with controlled settings. We don't control the lighting on partly cloudy/sunny days (and even if we use artificial lighting, it doesn't mean it'll cooperate or resolve all the issues). We don't control the life noises going on around us (monthly tornado test sirens, animals, washing machines, dishwashers, children, etc.). AND IT IS OKAY. In fact, it is more than okay. It's a reminder that there are REAL humans behind these screens and we live REAL lives. Anyway, all this is to say, long story long (lol), I GET YOU 100%. Sending a big warm hug to you Denise! So much love to you and your family this holiday season. Your makes are absolutely beautiful with all the heart, time, and energy you put into them. Take care and talk soon my friend!~Stephanie

I am a beginner knitter. I would love if you could list places you can get advents for next Christmas or how I could find places. I only know of one or two right now. Thank you. Love your videos. Just found it. Taking your sock classes. Thanks so much.

Thanks for watching Barbara!! I did list the dyers of the advents in the shownotes. There are more out there than I could possibly mention. Instagram is the best place to find yarn dyers and when they start selling advents. Exploring is part of the fun!!

No, I haven’t tried her pattern although I am aware of it. A rounded toe is my usual go to for my socks. Though I am knitting cuff down.

Yay! That makes me so happy to hear and please tell your husband I said you’re welcome. I have tried the Finchley graft and it’s absolutely wonderful. Truth be told I don’t always remember to do it. I am just so used to the Kitchener stitch. It becomes automatic.

Such a lovely Vlog, Denise. Thank you. Would you mind sharing the pattern for the tiny Christmas socks? Also, I have a question about winding. My fingering yarn slips through the little slots so I have to double it, and sometimes even that doesn't work. And I can never find that end again once I've wound my cake so I am forced to use the other end. If you have an answer for this, I would be ever grateful. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

I am late to this and that’s okay…I’m not here for the free stuff. I have been on a bunch of channels looking for the one I would actually watch and use. I landed here and so happy I did. Just started knitting and am trying to knit a shorty sock. I have started over so many times, I will eventually complete it-maybe even two😂👍

I’m doing the woolens and Nosh advent too. Did you have to purchase the second mini? I hope I have enough. I see only one mini. This is my first advent. I’m also knitting Arne and Carlos advent stocking which is fun.

I did not purchase a second mini. It comes with two. You might want to reach out to Woolens & Nosh. Or check inside the bag. May sound dumb, but I’ve made that mistake.

Let’s not call it Selfish Knitting, but Self-Care Knitting! Last year I drove myself crazy with knits for each child and their spouses (3+2), grandchild and their significant others (8+2), great-grandhild and my own spouse. This year, it’s going to have to be cash. I’m too old for the stress.
