Wish me luck everyone! I've been working my ass off these last 5 months to save up 6000 to put down on a 2020 Yamaha Vmax. Submitting the application this week!
@@danCK1990 You know how you dream about something so much then you tell yourself it cant possibly be that good so you dont get your hopes up. Well this isnt that lol. She exceeded my expectations
Yup, that was pretty much the case for my friend. When I went to look at an FZ750 after he had gotten his Vmax, they didn't take me seriously, so I drove to another dealership from there, and bought one.
100% no true in anyway. Every major insurance company would insure the bike and every major bank would finance it also. That was a stupid urban legend at the time. The EXACT same thing has been said of many different cars and bikes.
The number one safety rule on the first Vmax delivered to our store was to tell the customers to move out before overtaking anything or else you would end up in the back of what was in front of you due to the acceleration being being so instant with the change of one to two carbs feeding each cylinder when you hit that throttle. We had a few that came back within a week of selling with the front end of the bike bent back to the radiator because they did not listen. I remember one guy bought brand new Kawasaki LTD 440 twin who rocked it off of the main stand running and planted the bike into the front wall of the bike shop and totaled it. No matter how we tried to help new or experienced riders the know It all’s always gave us reason to keep trying to educate them on the new bikes. The Vmax is my number one bike to ride on the road.
Buddy of mine had a 454 LTD and I'll be damned that little bike didn't play! Not super fast but it's surprisingly fast little bike! I got it up to 110 when he let me take it for a ride it probably would have beat an EVO from the same year.
@Airgun Bubba I just bought a 2020 and its insanity on two wheels! Everyone gets a kick out of the fact that my bike's engine is bigger than my GMC Terrain's
I own 4 Vmax years vary. I once raced professionally and keep them all in a custom area inside my home so the memories will never leave me. Good times on the best motorcycle Yamaha ever created.
I got it!!! And it’s the Vance and Hines cs1 exhaust bike, whine the new vmax came out Vance and Hines bought one and used it to make the cs-1 exhaust system while also doing a bunch of upgrades including a transformer series pain job by Chris woods. It’s so awesome. If you go to Vance and Hines cs1 exhaust for the new vmax you see my bike eith the exhaust on it.
in 1985 my good friend bought a new V-Max as soon as it came out in Canada . it was the most amazing bike and huge horsepower at the time almost scary . I drove it many times with respect
I own a 91 v max. Canadian import. 145 bhp. If you put wings on her she would take off!! So comfy as well. Yamaha certainly got it rite with this model.
The guys giving it a thumbs down are obviously those who've lost to it. As a 2nd gen Vmax owner I can tell this thing is never ending fun. Except when having to stop to fuel up every time. It's a beast especially after putting race exhaust and tuned ecu.
The frequent gas stops are just something that you learn to live with. Here is a joke. Why is a VMAX like an electric car? The rider and driver both experience range anxiety. LOL
The V boost found on the first Gen VMAX was actually a butterfly system fitted between the carburetors. When a specific rpm was reached an actuator would open the butterfly valves between the carburetors allowing a single cylinder to draw from 2 carburetors. It allowed the VMAX to have good riding characteristics throughout the entire rpm range, reasonable economy and have that high power output.
We had an 87 Yamaha Venture with the V-Max engine minus the V-boost. It would just leave all other cruisers and bikes in its class. Massive crazy horsepower on a full bagger full cruiser. Loved it.
I reconnected with a friend I hadn't seen in a while. He told me he had a bike. I said what model. He said V-Max. I said that makes sense. That's what I love about Yamaha and how they designed the V-Max. They know what it is for and how it will be used. With that in mind it's a perfect reflection of what it should be and how to design to meet those goals; a perfect boulevard blaster.
@@Nobamaable multiple sources claimed different hp, 145 was the top, iv read 138 in other places. Ehh who really cares wen reality is 110-115 hp stock to the wheel
The last couple weeks I've found myself binging over all your videos. a car ran a stop sign and I t-boned it going 40mph. My 82 gs750 isnt doing too well, Blessed to be alive Dang I want to get back to riding, though.
I fell for the shear look of this bike when they first came out & it was as fast as it looked. I still want one . Im 69 yrs old & i would love a quick bike . Its cool too.
I had a Yamaha Fazer 700 which was the baby brother to this (even had little fake V-Max scoops) in the same colors, rode that for a while and loved it. Then I stepped up to the first gen V-Max and never wanted for more. I kept up with all my buddies on sport bikes, was more comfortable and did almost zero maintenance. Was the most fun I ever had on a bike. Literally could not smile when you twisted the throttle, even just going for a casual ride.
@@alanadrian8111 Exactly, the humility this guy shows is inspiring. It would have been funny as could be, but at the expense of an image pleasing to God, which I think our boy here is succeeding at.
My 09 Vmax finally needed its valves done at 77k. Also when you spend some time on it, youll be freaked just how quick it really is. 0-60 2.3...when you let it breathe it will scream. Chances are if you know the bike, you won't lose a race. My 85 Vmax was at 150 hrs and it wasn't sold or tested to anyone under 21 years old. Not to mention it couldn't be licenced in 14 states. They are the most iconic bike ever produced as well as maintenance free short of tires, gas and oil.
Yes the V Max was iconic I sold mine last year and I also own a Honda X4 it's their version of the original V Max muscle bike it's a bit more civilised as the Max only 100 bhp but tuned for more torque . both of those bikes are very special machines
The key for vmax has two options. One is the gear grip top like you have and or the normal key. My bike came with both. The gear top was for the guy that just left it in all the time, just twist and go! Looks cool when it’s in too. The normal key is just a key, simple. Love the video! Sad to see vmax discontinued after 2020.
Oh man, they discontinued? This and BMW K1200R K1300R really scratch that itch. Last time I checked, these were still expensive used and will probably remain so.
Bought one of these new in 1992 when I was in the army in Germany. Scary fast. I got it up to 135 mph on the autobahn (legally) before I chickened out. The bike still had more engine left…
I remember when the VMax first came out in '85, I used to go to the Yamaha dealer in San Diego about twice a week, sometimes more, for over a year and spend hours standing across the street staring and gawking at the VMax parked in the showroom, dreaming of the day I would own one. Fate had it that I'd never get the chance to own one. It's 2020 and I'm 54 years of age now and still dreamin' that fate will smile at me one day, though I'm exclusively into ADV bikes nowadays. A shout out to the 2020 Ténéré 700 also brilliantly conceived by Yamaha!
Today they would call that stalking. You're not getting any younger. Pull the trigger, or in your case, twist the throttle. Your only regret will be not following your dreams. LIVE A LITTLE!
I love my Harley and have had the pleasure of owning a few bikes with the V Max being one of them. It was by far one of the scariest bikes I've ever ridden. It was an absolute beast.
I remember when this bike came out. Cycle World or Motorcyclist magazine did a story and said it was the only bike that ever came in for testing with a extra back tire. There was a guy who rode with us back in 86 and he had the K & N filtercharger kit that was supposed to make the bike even faster. That bike was brutal fast. The midrange was intoxicating. I had another buddy with a GPZ750 Turbo…that bike was stupid fast too. The 80’s had some fun bikes.
I bought one of these next Gen VMax first year it was offered back in 2009. I rode it for 10 years and sold it back in 2019. I loved this bike, I only sold it to pay off the remainder of my student loans. If I had a complaint, and to me this isn't really a big deal but the gas mileage was bad but it was to be expected. I got about 25mpg to 28mpg. The gas tank was about 4 gallons and I drove this to work a lot, and my trip was about 60mile round trip which meant I visited a gas station everyday, but I loved every minute of it. Yamaha sells a 240 tire kit for this from the factory, one of my first modes plus I shaved the beaver tail to show of the fat tire. It does nothing for the performance but it sure did look great. I have been itching to get back on a bike and my search has lead me to 3 possible bike, another one of these, a Diavel, or a ZH2. I am leaning toward the Diavel simply for something different.
I rode one when they first came out back in 85. Never bought one but am thinking about it now, now that I'm an old fart. Been riding for over 40 years and I'm still alive.
Thank you my friend. That and trying to eat right (good luck with that) and a little exercise plus my 60 Pontiac Bonnville Safari project keep my feet planted on this wonderful world.
WRONG on the butterfly valves giving a ram air effect!! The "V Boost" was actually aa complex arrangement of butterfly valves that opened at above a certain number of revs so a cylinder on its induction cycle could use the carb of the neighbouring cylinder whilst that cylinder was on the exhaust cycle. In essence the bike goes from having 4 carbs to having 8 carbs attached to 4 cylinders above a certain RPM level. This meant that when the V Boost kicked in each cylinder suddenly had the equivalent of two carbs available during the induction cycle. This allowed the V Max to break the old Kawasaki KH750 H2's fastest accelerating production vehicle record with a sub 3 second (2.4 seconds) 0 to 60 MPH world record. The V Max's record was eventually taken by the Feuling W3C in the mid 1990's. Later V Max bikes were detuned with the V Boost disabled or nerfed to cater for riders of a more wimpier disposition who liked the looks and sound of a V Max but didn't want the underwear damage that riding a full power V Max can bring. When I used to drag race bikes, back in the late 1980's, I was at Santa Pod Raceway (in the UK) and a bored out 1300cc Cosworth tuned V Max with Nitros recorded a 169 MPH terminal over a standing quarter mile (440 Yards) with a time in the 8's. It was announced that it was the fastest quarter for the day and the highest terminal speed also for the day. This is why the original full power 1985 V Max is legendary.
I had an '86 and loved it. The engine took on a new note at 5400 RPM. There were kits you could purchase to override the servo to keep the butterfly valve open. Never sounded like a good idea to me.
@@MOTOMOTO-kp6hj ...That's not true at all. I read it and cared and it would seem there was quite a few others too. If you don't care then don't read it. Your post was pointless and childish. Text book troll.
I worked for a Yamaha desalted in 1985 when this bike came out. At the time, we didn’t stock ANY tires that large, so we definitely got a pallet of tires with it. We were located next to an Army base and the VMax was a huge hit. I was just 19 and it was too scary for me though. I wasn’t even allowed to sit on it!
They launched the V-Max in 1985, due to the 1984 the Honda Sabre/V65, being listed in the Guinness Book Of Records as being the most powerful production motorcycle ever. The Yamaha gas tank location was weird, and it went well and just like the Honda, shredded 2nd gear in the cogbox. Upgrades rapidly became available, thankfully. A slick design, purchased mainly by a certain kind of individual, but admired by many.
I have a numbered 2009 model. It came with plaque with the individual number on it, a massive 4’X 9’ poster of it from the factory, a Yamaha custom car cover and all sorts of other goodies. Mine only has a different exhaust and power commander for ‘modifications’ and it’s absolutely a beast. Oh yeah, mine also has never spent a night outside and I now have 2,487 miles on it. Love it!
@Cobb Knobbler the my back when sitting is about 11 feet away from the screen. I have tactile transducers in the couch and a 7.1 setup with a onkyo receiver.. it can be immersive.. But I cut the cord in 2017... so I only watch JRE, SRK, Illestrator,Cyclecruza, brando bicasso UA-cam channels on it. Throw in some columbo episodes and 70s mona fong movies....lol. I have yet to watch 4k bluray on it yet, so I'm kinda fishing in a speedboat. 75 is big at first, esp when mounting by urself... then it becomes normal. My phone is where I watch most things, but I wanted to hear the vmax on the sound system and feel like I'm riding my vmaxene. BTW, I'm not a TV snob, I just want to fill the wall space... for 900bux why not. 6 years ago I paid 1000 for a 50 :) so prices are falling. Get u one if possible... and get the aural tactile transducers for the count... feels like universal studios show.
@Cobb Knobbler i personally enjoy the gun fight in Open Range. used to have a big speaker setup and could feel the shots ripping through me. i miss those speakers.
The butterflies did NOT create a ram air affect. What the Vboost did was opened around 6000 RPM and the front to rear carbs were linked. So each cylinder when the butterflies were opened were using 2 carburators for one cylinder. Euro Vmax bikes due to regulations didnt have the Vboost. HP was 90. American Vmax bikes had the Vboost HP was 145. In reality, the HP at the rear wheel was around 110 due to the rear diff.
It also had aluminium scoops and had the tank dash. European bikes caught up later and also had the full 145 bhp with vboost, apart from the namby pamby french with their 100bhp limit. I have a USA import from '88 here in the UK, full stainless race exhaust, stage 1 dynojet kit with K&N filter, 17 inch rear wheel, barnet clutch and plates, vboost overide switch so you can leave it stock, turn it off or have it on from tickover, which is fun but uses up a lot of petrol. I do like the new 1700 one but it's way overpriced, $17,000 in the states but £18,000 in the UK at launch which is 25% more, bit of a rip off methinks.
I went to a Yamaha demo event at Malcolm Smith’s in 2014 because I was pondering buying the fresh new FZ-09. While waiting for a slot to open up on the FZ, for sh**s and giggles I took a spin on Mad Max, having never had the opportunity to sling a leg over the OG Max. It was the most frightening thing I have ever ridden! Zero reason for an almost 700lb bike with 200hp, (which is really all the reason you need) Surprised you didn’t mention the shaft drive effect, where under hard acceleration, instead of the front end wanting to come up, the back end raises up and it feels like the bike is going to take off like an airplane. My other observation was that first gear was useless unless you need to pull a horse trailer. I quickly figured out that 2nd was as far as any 180lb solo rider needed to downshift, and that made it much easier to make a right turn from a stop. I rode the FZ next and despite the well documented crap suspension and jerky throttle, found it was much less of a handful and much more fun, and ended up buying one, which I still have, though with lots of suspension and mapping fixes deployed. To me, it’s the little Max, and all the fun I need. Long live Max, hail the king!
My mt09 is just getting done with m4 exhaust power commander 5. I'm debating to adjust the front shock, and soften it up a bit. The rear shock is a bit saggy under aggressive leaning. I'm thinking ohlines inserts for the front and ohlines for the rear. What are you pondering?
The shaft drive is what we used to call "stand and salute",because that rear end would just lift up,and you were OFF and rolling! Mine was an 89. Loved that scooter!!! I'm on a built 114 stroked Harley now,and it's not as fast as my old Vmax, but she'll run pretty close to it..
I had a 1981 Yamaha GSX 1100 Midnight Special only cuz I couldn't afford the V-MAX...still a Legend in my mind...You Rock Mister ! God Bless y'all ! Ride Hard, ride Safe ! I'm up here in Toronto Canada
Cop didn't like it when I told him I didn't know my speed ,he asked me again with apparent shock in his voice, needless to say I still got a ticket, most cops in LA suck
@Hugh Jaanus hope my correction makes you feel better about yourself. I'm actually a good speller, but my phone isn't that good or too sensitive, plus I don't always check my work.
That v4 motor is the musclebound grandchild of the 1200cc from the 1980s Venture touring bike. I had a Venture and it was a MASSIVE torque monster. Im a big guy at 6'4" and 275# and my Venture had no issues running 2-up with me and my wife, pulling a trailer, in the rocky mountains on several vacations. Only reason I got rid of that bike was the body was falling off of it. Damn awesome powerplant. And my '86 V-MAX WAS EVEN MORE AWESOME!! I havent ridden one of the 2nd Gens YET!
I had an 86 VMax for a couple of years. The guy I bought it from told me "It makes long straightaways short." I don't think I ever went faster than 90 on it but it was sure fun from stoplights. Handling and braking? Not so great. But, I wish I'd kept it.
I was never in bikes until I saw Vmax first time back in my home town Tangier Morocco somewhere in 90s and I was wowed that is a cool bike and when ever the owner pass by or I pass by a coffee shop where he used to hung up and I stay looking at the bike for a long time and I never forget those. Moment. Now I am here in US and I have Vstar 650 and I can’t wait to have a Vamx. I think the bike is monster. I am 5’11” any advice regarding size and ridding experience to have this beautiful piece of art.
@@adelky52 good story, I saw one a month ago. It surprised me because it came out of nowhere. I only had a few seconds to enjoy it's view but they were awesome and cemented my resolve to own one someday. DAMN, if I was in the US I'd happily take that VStar off of your hands so we could both upgrade.
Appreciate seeing you on local roads! Also the fact you love the Lord.........way cool! Stay safe in these challenging times. I miss riding my 2007 RWB VFR :(. Years ago I was working for the Farfield Company at a Dupont project in Delaware, an ex-fighter pilot I met there talked that his V-max was the only thing that gave him the thrill of being a fighter pilot, oh my!
I remember as a kid in the late 80's being on the back of my dads Sabre running 110 mph and his buddy had a Vmax. He pulled up beside us looked over smiled and rolled the throttle and was gone. Awesome bike
I own a CBR1000RR with some mods and I raced my buddy with a 2017 V-Max and he kept up with me all the way to 90 mph until i started to pull away, that is a very impressive muscle bike.
I loved my V-Max. Still one of the meanest looking bikes out there. I hated the small gas tank under the seat-it emptied way too fast! Had to throw a Corbin seat on for more comfort, but what a bike! The same motor, but defined a bit, was also on the Yamaha Venture back then.
The Venture was first. It came out after Honda introduced the V65 Magna and Sabre. Cycle Magazine tested the Venture and took a photo of it minus the bodywork. Everyone thought that this would make a heckuva power cruiser. So did Yamaha, because the next year the V-Max was born, Kawasaki borrowed the 900 Ninja engine for the Eliminator, and Suzuki introduced a new 1200 V4 engine for the Madura and Cavalcade. The mid-80s were a liquid-cooled paradise.
Had a 1st gen new as my FIRST motorcycle in the '90 the first week I lifted the front launching at a red light, scary stuff but I calmed down and enjoyed every KM I was on it especially in tunnels. Joined a club, touring with 300 other Maxes was the best, some people really went crazy with the mods. The original did have meters at the top of the fake tank, also the scoops were completely fake on the gen 1 but the looks make it really bad-ass. True muscle bike, often called the Terminator of bikes. Also every time at the gas station was pure fun opening that tank everyone came to have a look at it.
Like when he was doing over 90! LOL I wonder about those trucks he was along side... they were doing in the 80's in a construction zone?? Where's da law at!?
I bought an 88 new right before Christmas 88. The dealer let me winter store the bike in their showroom, they had a section roped off for all of the winter bought bikes. The bike was awesome and very comfortable to ride. I used to ride back and forth between Connecticut and Maryland down 95. I took the bike to California in 91 when I moved there, and kept it for a few more years. I wish I still had it today. And you're right, very low maintenance.
I had a 89 Vmax.. It needed a little work, but when I got it all back together, this thing WAS a monster!! Kinda short in the leg,but when you get on it this thing screamed!! And,you didn't even get into the V boost,buddy.. The front end gets really light around 140,and if you don't get ONTO what is supposed to be the fuel tank, you WILL be flying! Lol.. Have fun with it!! I sure did.. Keep those 2 wheels down,my friend.. Peace and may God be with you.
Just wanted to thank you for you're amazing content, you have taught me so much about motorcycles and the industry. Even more so you have taught me alot about life and how to maintain a positive attitude. I honestly can't thank you enough. Keep up the awesome work
Hey man. Love the videos and welcome to the club. I found a 15 for 9k last season after building then selling a gen 1. When you get the chance, take a look at the ECU just under the faux tank for a red sticker saying "gurued gear". If it's not there, it's well worth the cash to have em flash it. Tames first gear from a stop, makes the power band smoother, removes that annoying ignition cut in fourth and unlocks the ecu. Pretty much makes the bike ride the way it should have from the factory. Glad you like it. Cheers
When you're on the wrong side of a broken double yellow line and the knucklehead in the cage decides he wants to race, it's nice knowing that 6000 rpm brings the transwarp drive into the game.
The screen is definitely a throw back, more than a throw back it is like a retro futuristic kind of thing like people in the 80s thinking how a motorcycle from 2017 would look like I love it
I bought a 2005 a few weeks ago. I never thought I wanted a Vmax. Now I can’t stand the thought of not having one! So much fun to ride! The only thing I would trade it for is a gen-2 Vmax!
Well, my brother had couple 1st gens over the past 20 years. I always dreamed of owning one. Now, I own a 2015 2nd gen and I always said I would give a testicle to own a 1st gen..... well, I gave both testicles (after the wife took them)and now I can die happy that I own one!!!! Trust me my brother, you will LOVE the 2nd gen!!!
I bought an 86 VMAX in 2002. I started racing 1/4 mile n had custom rims/slick on back, 4/1 VH exhaust n the intake n carbs redone. It was always on Vboost. Had a shift light etc. It was an animal to ride! If you build a VMAX make sure you also build clutch n trans, mine blew apart n didn’t know till I got to pit n oil was bronze from all the metal.🤷🏻♂️😉
I have a 2005 anniversary special I bought new. I remember when they first rolled out the first year vmax I went to the dealer to look at it and at that time they wouldn’t even sell it to you unless you’re an experienced rider. I knew then and there someday I would get one! The vboost at that time when it hit about 6000 RPM it would literally throw you back. I still love it! You can never go wrong with any Vmax.
I love the channel ... but when I seen the V Max (as a V Max owner) I knew you were in for a snack down on V Max facts. It has a cult following like no other.
There's a big part of me that wishes they would put that engine in the 109r. Styling queues are worlds apart but that performance is something definitely to be desired on any cruiser.
I had a 85' V-max 1200 that I bought brand new! When it hits 6k rpms the V-boost kicks in, and opens all four carbs, and really pulls hard!! Too bad my house burned. down, and took the bike with it. I would travel everywhere with it, and would run sustained highway speeds easily! (You had to stop and fuel up every 100 miles, when reserve lights would turn on) Miss that bike! Now I ride a 08' Harley Davidson Nightster for around town. Love it too!!
Had the 85 it was the wildest bike on the road. My room mate took out a 30k life insurance policy on me because he rode it once for a very short (1mile) run and was sure I would die on that beast. Its raw power actually saved me more than once
I test rode a Vmax in 85 when they hit the show room but bought the Fazer instead. Since then I 've had a few Harleys and dirt bikes but now since 2020 was the last year of production for the Max, I'm buying one and keeping it.
The gen 1 vboost acutually had nothing to do with air intake. It was essentially an intake plenum splitter. Closed, each cylinder can draw from 2 carbs, but when the splitter opened, each cylinder drew from all four carbs. Yes that means more air but the gen 1 intake scoops were more less fake for appearance.
I have the most powerful cruiser .. 2012 ZX14R 1441 cc 207hp on the Dyno.. I never did like the Vee-Max for riding comfort... Terrible handling too. I had one for 2 years and I got rid of that....& bought this Ninja and I absolutely LOVE IT!
sdq sdq your not wrong . The v-max became a bit legendary and even way back I remember bike shops near me saying most 2nd hand ones only come back to the shop once they had been wrapped round a tree
To be honest the new Vmax is probably easier to ride than either of those bikes if you stay out of the throttle. It should feel a lot like riding a dyna except for all the burnouts and wheelies at full throttle. From a older guy who had owned, rode, and raced many fast bikes you would go from intimidated to in love in the first 500 miles, and wonder how you ever lived without such a bike in your life.
I worked as a mechanic in a Yamaha shop when these came out, and I can tell you with zero hesitation that the vmax was the scariest damn motorcycle I've ever ridden, without exception, and I rode pretty much everything available then. You couple the arms pull out of the socket power with the insane torque from the shaft drive, and you were sure death was another 20' down the road. That is not hyperbole. I'll never get on one again.
I have a 2005 anniversary edition VMax that I got brand new, and will have until the day I die. Grew up riding mini bikes and dirt bikes back when anybody riding a motorcycle was considered a thug or worse. How things have changed! Getting old sucks but as long as I can get on my Vmax, life is good!
Absolutely amazing machine. I got mine last summer for my birthday. Love riding something that feels like it wants to kill you😄.. Keep up the good work and cheers from us fellow bikers here in the great white north . Canada loves your channel.
an amazingly powerful bike.i was 15 years old when the first model came out.i remember seeing advertisements that the v-max would break the speed limit in 1st gear.the speed limit in new york was 55mph at that time.one of my friends uncle had the 1985 model.he took off,and was in warp speed.we were so impressed with the power it had.if you look up jay gleason,he was a pro rider who had a lot to do with, testing the bike and showing its insane power.great videos.
I had a 85 Vmax. The side scoops were aluminum, non-functional. If I remember correctly. The left side covered a good portion of the wiring harness and the right side covered the rad fill neck and fuze box. The V boat connected two carbs. At 52 or 5500 RPM the butterfly would open and the for and aft cylinders could feed off both carbs. I think it was kinda gimmicky. I removed mine and machined a straight tube to permanently connect the two carbs. I got bored with the bike and built a turbo set up. It was a primitive set up. The remains of an old Rayjay kit. Used a Weber downdraft that stuck up through the air box cover (fake fuel tank). It was an animal. Drag bars, struts with wheely bar attachments. It eventually blow up. Over boosted at the track and broke all the time lands. Started building a new chassis using a 13" wide MT drag radial on a custom made 15" rim. This was all back in the day before readily available EFI and turbo kits. Not a fan of the second Gen. Just a little too anime for me.

When these came out, you had to pay cash (in San Diego anyway) you couldn't get a loan because they said you'd be dead before the year was out.
Yup, that was pretty much the case for my friend.

@@johnsheetz6639 Hmmm...it might have taken an hour to reach that speed but theyre a good little bike.
You know it's a sick bike when the guy twists the throttle, slows back down, and says a prayer.

Still one of the all-time coolest looking bikes. Those are intakes are just iconic.
They are hideous and they are fake. Dont do anything. Many Vmax owners take them off because all they do is create drag
in 1985 my good friend bought a new V-Max as soon as it came out in Canada . it was the most amazing bike and huge horsepower at the time almost scary . I drove it many times with respect
I own a 91 v max. Canadian import. 145 bhp. If you put wings on her she would take off!! So comfy as well. Yamaha certainly got it rite with this model.
Almost scary??!!! My "85" scared the dog snot out of me. It didn't like to corner well. That thing was a hoot though, wish I still had it.
The guys giving it a thumbs down are obviously those who've lost to it.
As a 2nd gen Vmax owner I can tell this thing is never ending fun. Except when having to stop to fuel up every time. It's a beast especially after putting race exhaust and tuned ecu.
The 2nd gen VMAX is a great bike. Needs a supercharger to become perfect though.
The frequent gas stops are just something that you learn to live with. Here is a joke. Why is a VMAX like an electric car? The rider and driver both experience range anxiety. LOL
When you took off without your Words of Wisdom, I thought "If ever there was a time for an appeal to God, it's before you ride a VMAX."
Or a CR500
ok, not religious at all, but you beat me to it.
V Boost!
As a Vmax owner I can tell you NO GOD can save you now!
Ha ha:D
The V boost found on the first Gen VMAX was actually a butterfly system fitted between the carburetors.
When a specific rpm was reached an actuator would open the butterfly valves between the carburetors allowing a single cylinder to draw from 2 carburetors.
It allowed the VMAX to have good riding characteristics throughout the entire rpm range, reasonable economy and have that high power output.
It is a servo that opens up at 6,000 rpm. My understanding was that each cylinder could draw from all four carbs. It felt almost like a turbo.
@tinnman3505 yes you could get at tboost controller to adjust when the vboost starts. I have one that isn’t currently installed for my max

The key for vmax has two options. One is the gear grip top like you have and or the normal key. My bike came with both.

I remember it being first intruduced. Many insurance companies would not touch it.

This is why the original full power 1985 V Max is legendary.
thanks for the explanation!!
I had an '86 and loved it. The engine took on a new note at 5400 RPM. There were kits you could purchase to override the servo to keep the butterfly valve open. Never sounded like a good idea to me.
Only the non USA bikes were not full power. All U. S. Maxes had Vboost.

I remember the same . Dealer in our area had one 86 model with second tore out with kerker headers and a jet kit . Meanest sounding bike ever.
I have a numbered 2009 model. It came with plaque with the individual number on it, a massive 4’X 9’ poster of it from the factory, a Yamaha custom car cover and all sorts of other goodies.
Thanks for sharing what really comes across as solid facts about this bike. I've been fascinated with both generations since their inceptions. 👍🏻
All facts, except the part where the Vmax has a rear differential.

I bought an 88 new right before Christmas 88. The dealer let me winter store the bike in their showroom, they had a section roped off for all of the winter bought bikes.
Cheers
Third gear burnouts.... Never gets old.
Blame emissions, not the factory.
Shaft driven smooth, far ahead of its time. A favorite fun touring bike with the power to get the heck out of harm's way.
When you're on the wrong side of a broken double yellow line and the knucklehead in the cage decides he wants to race, it's nice knowing that 6000 rpm brings the transwarp drive into the game.

The screen is definitely a throw back, more than a throw back it is like a retro futuristic kind of thing like people in the 80s thinking how a motorcycle from 2017 would look like I love it
The V-Max is the ultimate power trip in my book, but the 1st generation was the one I'd like to own because it looks so good.
I'm so happy this motorcycle was used in the film 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' They called it the 'HellMax'.
Cool bike for a shitty movie
Sean butler stfu
@@mar2smooth54 but the movie was shite.🤷🏽🤦🏽
2:45, thought he was going to say," The monster's between your legs." Lol
missed oppurtunity
I feel the kick of horsepower thrust form here. Amazing bike.
(You had to stop and fuel up every 100 miles, when reserve lights would turn on)
Miss that bike!
Zues: Release the Kraken!!! 🐙
Yamaha: Release the V-Max!!! 🏍
Zeus.
"Zeus sees the V-Max and puts the Kraken away, for he knew he'd been beat."
Vtec kicked in yo
thats how yamaha thinkin
thats it
4:23 "because you can't put this in your pocket"
*PUTS IT IN ANYWAY*
Bah. They come with two flat keys too. Maybe his got lost
"Here's second gear..."

I absolutely love the fact that you use scripture! Keep up the great work brother! Loved the ride!
I test rode a Vmax in 85 when they hit the show room but bought the Fazer instead. Since then I 've had a few Harleys and dirt bikes but now since 2020 was the last year of production for the Max, I'm buying one and keeping it.
Had 2 x 1200 Vmax's - Moved to a Gen 2 Vmax and said I'd never sell it! Then the Triumph Rocket 2.5 L came along. The Vmax was brilliant though!
Can u compare and Contrast gen2 vmax and rocket3? Like what do u do with all that extra torque?
I would love to test ride a newer Speed 3 I need to head to the local dealer sometime soon.
I’ll keep my vmax
Can you install bags and windshield how hard
Ron Gates yes you can. Not hard! But, the vmax isn’t a good touring bike due to you may only get a 100 miles to a tank on gas
The way you say yamaha is badass. "Yaamahaaw" love it.
So kinda like secondaries on a 4barrel carb. Pretty awesome!
Thank you. So much misinformation on here. Lol
I used to have a '95 VMAX, such an awesome bike. It had a unique feel, especially when you bumped the throttle... so much torque. I miss my Max.
I’m now in love with this bike
This is one of my dream bikes! I would do anything to own or even get to ride one!
I have one! Stupid quick!
Life expectancy after leaving dealership is
Best bike I've ever owned..... By far.
I loved the VMax even in 1990 when it came out. Took me 25 years to actaully drive a bike myself in the end!
Thankyou for doing these .
Love the bikes, the way you review and even the bible verses man
Thankyou.
The only bike I ever had real dreams about riding back in the day . Still never had the chance.....One day🤞🤞
this bike cost as much as a used car here , crazy
sdq sdq your not wrong . The v-max became a bit legendary and even way back I remember bike shops near me saying most 2nd hand ones only come back to the shop once they had been wrapped round a tree
Hope you get one. I waited 36 years and finally could afford a 2nd Gen. I am without words, it was well worth the wait!!!
@@kactuszakk4203 so glad that dream came true my friend 👍
I see you are supporting a nice knee brace. I just got that accessory too.
Nice young man's bike. Give me a Ultra Classic or a Goldwing
I have a 2019 Goldwing and highly recommend it. Fast , comfortable great handling and so much more.
@@tonytesoriero1242 just to heavy and sucks in the turns.
"You CANT put this key in your pocket"...
-Puts ket in pocket.
U only have part of the keyfob. There is a key holder that protects the key when not in use.
Absolutely amazing machine. I got mine last summer for my birthday. Love riding something that feels like it wants to kill you😄.. Keep up the good work and cheers from us fellow bikers here in the great white north . Canada loves your channel.
Sounds like my wife, but yeah I enjoy riding her as well.
Henry Wes your wife or the bike ?😂
Greatest thing about this channel is the words of wisdom bible verses every time. I love it man, never stop God bless and ride on!
an amazingly powerful bike.i was 15 years old when the first model came out.i remember seeing advertisements that the v-max would break the speed limit in 1st gear.the speed limit in new york was 55mph at that time.one of my friends uncle had the 1985 model.he took off,and was in warp speed.we were so impressed with the power it had.if you look up jay gleason,he was a pro rider who had a lot to do with, testing the bike and showing its insane power.great videos.
Pee Wee Gleason did the Honda V65 Magna commercial back in the day.......then this thing came out !!
Hangs you out like a dish rag in a hurricane !
