The R3 was very good but just felt over the top and the Devil was a mixed bag. I just didn’t think that the engine suited the bike. The Ducati dealer pushed me to try it out as I also had a 1098R. I spent a few hours with it but it was not for me. The V-M was brilliant for everyday pottering about and that engine was so flexible. But that new R3 just looks the mutt’s nut’s. I need to try one.

Lot of positive comments about the vmax are clearly coming from people who have not owned one. Well as previous owner I can tell you there are 2 things that made me sell it. Small gas tank and awful gearing. It's too heavy to be a true quarter mile bike, and at 75 miles an hour down the RPM are so high that any twitch of the throttle and the bike is jerky not to mention it literally brings the gas mileage so low it's difficult to make it anywhere out of town. Bike is a 100% boulevard cruiser, and don't ask it to do anything else or you will be sadly disappointed. It really bummed me out having to get rid of it but I need/like something more versatile.
Need to ride them, I know the diavel is a sportier ride against the rocket but obviously not on grunt or luxury feel, but then u have the GT which is different again, that is more comfortable for distance. As of April 2020

xDiavel S - completely different bike from the Diavel only sharing the front brake calipers even though similar name - would be a more interesting comparo for this video. Its also more powerful and quicker than the Diavel.
Long time ago, I had a V-Max 1200 for some years and the only happiness I got from it was when I opened full throttle at green lights and its V-boost acceleration on straight roads. It was just awful at curves at more than 100 km/h and it was a heavy gas drinker.
CORRECTION: I made an error in the video, the rear wheel size of the Triumph Rocket III [TFC] is 16" not 17". Official tyre sizes are, Front 150/80 R17 V - Rear 240/50 R16 V
Nice video, but in the end nothing beats riding the bikes to determine which is best for you. I also think a fair compare will be when the standard production rocket is out, not the TFC.
Given that the Vmax has been unchanged since 2009 and has no electronic modes for riding, it is still very competitive. I'd like to see the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. I'm sure the Rocket will trounce the Vmax on 0-6 but I'm not so sure on the 1/4 mile. If Yamaha would just update the electronics and drop a few pounds. These could be done with minimal cost since they already have the E stuff and shaving some weight with lighter wheels, shaft cover, exhaust shouldn't be cost prohibitive. Launching the Vmax is my biggest challenge as it either wants to spin the tire or the clutch has to be modulated and does bark back when you do. Come on Yamaha, you MADE the muscle cruiser, now MAKE it again! Love the bike all the same and wouldn't give it up...unless they did the above.
Easy win for the "200hp Vmax" Never rode the Diavel (very cool looking bike tho), the rocket 3 is just not very impressive when u hit the throttle it doesnt tickle the wanna go fast itch, but the Vmax will make you change religion when you open that throttle I think anyone who has rode a Vmax will agree its a real eye opening rush. When it comes to adrenaline acceleration and power the Vmax is just in a separate league easy.
T B I own a Diavel and it’s truly something else to ride. The fastest recorded stock Diavel did the quarter in 9.89 seconds, and the fastest stock Vmax did it in 10.11 seconds. These aren’t official results though, just a magazine test. They both sit on 2.5 second 0-60 officially. The Vmax is an amazing bike, but the Duke just looks so damn erotic to me. Personal opinions though.
T B - indeed thé Vmax is impressive, but the if the New Rocket is anything like the original R3, unlimited and with secondary throttles removed .... It will be awesome 😎
when bike hunting in 2019 , I tried the Vmax because it put up a good race against my then 06 gxsr1000 , but those air rams were so uncomfortable riding right on my inner knees that I passed on it.. then I checked out the xdiavel, never test drove it but did sit on it and was just too small for me, I'm 6ft and 220. so after more looking I ran into the Rocket 3 2020 at the time. I absolutely fell in love. test drove it for a couple of miles during the pandemic at OC motorcycle and less then a year later bought mines just over a year ago and love it. it's sick sick sick! @@tribsa7503 thank you. Yes I use to sell power sports in San Diego and that's when I rode one. But again that was a long time ago and I learned on a 2001 r1. Issue is this is 10 hours away and I can sit on it before. Thanks again
have owned two vmaxs (now own a 2005 ). I think all these bikes are great. I can tell you switching back and forth from sport to Vmaxs - very happy to land on another vmax - reliable, torque ready always... I will never sell this one, its a keeper, only mod is a Corbin seat (works well). I always get a little respect from a sport bike rider at a red light, even a modern sport bike..as they should...lol. The only downside, I seem to replace the rear tire often enough.. 🙂No bad comments for the three. They all look fantastic.
The Rocket is what I'm dreaming of
VMAX still tops, get one while you can. All super machines!!
In EU you can't get it..
Right. I got the very last one in Europe. Bought it in December 2016 but could not get it from dealer because of working abroad till summer 2019.
VMax is not sold in Europe for emission regulations since Jan 2017.
I own both now . The 1200 and the 1700.
When I switched back from the 1700 to the 1200 the first time my first thought about the 1200 VMax was "wow. Fragile".
I love both. Own in total 18 bikes, the Maxes are the crown. The continuation of the legendary Münch Mammut.
Just a bike. But powerful. Very.
The V-MAX has always been my favorite! I've been on the 1200 but never the 1700. Still something to wish for....
Wonderful details and graphics rarely see in most reviews. I have an '05 Rocket. This class is extremely fast, fun and smooth. Hope many get to ride one of these! Thanks for sharing.
VMAX beats any machine, real muscle bike not joke , just power
THE MOST PRACTICAL, USEFULL AND INFORMATIVE comparison of motorcycles EVER POSTED imho !!!!!!!!!!!
Riding the Rocket 3 is like making love to a beautiful woman.. Because they are two things that I'll never get to do.
At least you wont lose your money.. :)
I do both....it's a reality!!!! (No, I don't share!!!)
Why not? Ill try one next summer.
Speak for thyself
I understand not everyone gets to ride the Rocket, but making love to a woman...come on man
Time to get another rocket, miss my old 08, what a friggin torque monster they are, gets many smiles/miles
Actually Triumph updated the official numbers for the new Rocket III 2 days ago (18 Jun 2019) and it's now:
HP = 180 @ 7000rpm
Torque = 166 lb/ft (225Nm)@ 4000rpm
Dry Weight = 290kg (639lbs)
Also the high price of the Rocket III compare to the other is because they are making only a limited special production of 750 on the first year and they will be making a more mainstream version (and more affordable) the year after.
Thanks for the update!
I heard back in February that it was around 180 + HP but was ask not to spread the word.
I love my 06 Rocket and see know reason to up grade.
The vmax was launched at 21k and only dropped to 16k because it wasn’t selling.. Try only 5k sold in nearly 7 years, now that is exclusive!
I’m definitely a VMAX fan and the only thing missing in this presentation is an actual quarter mile drag race.
vmax 10,0/215 km/h diavel 10,1/210 km/h rocket 11,0 /200 km/h = vmax is just lsightly faster than diavvel both more than slightly faster than rocket :x .me cb 13,2 /157 km/h :x .
You don't buy these bikes for sheer speed alone....get a crotch rocket if that's what you want. I'd buy the one of these 3 that gives me the best long trip comfort. They're all plenty fast.
It's happened and it's the Vmax 10.5, 3 1l.9, D 10.9!
VMAX still king
This comment does matter anymore can't buy Vmax discontinued plus I like the rocket looks-wise way better
Bro u made exactly the comparison video I was looking for since triumph announced rocket 3. Everyone else was only comparing Ducati and triumph but one one else was including the mighty VMAX.......Thankx for the video🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Traded in my 2010 Vrod Muscle in for a 2017 Diavel after looking at all 3 of these bikes and there are zero regrets, simply fantastic bike.
I will take the Rocket, for sheer street presence......
Trust me it is not a good bike for tight turns as the ducati or vmax but is superior to me for HW riding that the diavel n vmax cant match with torque!
@@carminearcieri348 the torque on the vmax is more than enough for highway driving if it's just highway driving. but i just like the looks of the Triumph more.
if i was gonna buy one, i'd go for the VMAX. i'd use the money that i saved vs. the Triumph for cosmetic and performance mods to personalize the bike to my tastes.
@@sepg5084 ya my triumph rocket 3 is really bad with tight corners to tell you the truth i wish i bought the honda valkyrie instead i do luv the vmax just not the style of the back end it looks a bit sloppy but is def a faster bike
Yamaha for me. I suspect the other two will have reliability issues
Triumph with reliability issues? If it's anything like the old rocket, you don't have anything to worry about, both over engineered and extremely reliable, I have the old vmax engine also, no problems with that either, I love them both,
@@jaymorris3468
Complete bullshit, truimph are as much reliable as ducati. Yamaha outperforms truimph in realiabilty.
You truimph fanboys are delusion check realiabilty stata and come here.
@@ajinkyathorat7502 I have owned 2 triumphs, currently on a 2010 thunderbird I’ve owned since new, had one road breakdown in that time, electrical. Otherwise in 11 years all good, previous bike an america, had no issues in the 5 years I owned it,
Yamaha for reliability, price, performance, and resale value
I go for looks, I love the vmax. Ever since I seen it in ghost rider spirit of vengeance, I told myself I want that bike
That bike is the perfect thing for a ride for ghost rider
Rocket... that torque!
But I’ll go with the V max.
If money wasn't an issue, I'd go for the Diavel as I prefer low weight to high power. I'd install some forward controls on it and presto.
I've owned my 09Vmax. It makes me happy to not care about any other bikes. 0-60 2.3sec. 200 hp. 95,578 miles. It is worth the money.
When I wanted a new bike, I went to look at a Rocket 3, sat on it and knew straight away it wasn’t for me, this thing is like a barge, went to look at a V-Max, here in the U.K. they were £21k then Yamaha dropped them to £15k as hardly anyone bought one, fugly as hell, not for me, went to look at a Diavel, test rode one, bought it, best of the bunch as far as I’m concerned, did take a night rod out for a test ride too, was bloody awful
ggallinmoko123 did you had a testride on the rocket 3 as well or just sit on one? It is bulky indeed, but by watching a lot of reviews it seems it feels more agile then it looks
I'm sorry for you.
The Diavel just looks sooo good though…… it’s like telling us all these wonderful characteristics about three girls and the Ducati is just so beautiful you weren’t paying any attention to any of the other stuff. 😍
I used to own the old Rocket - I now have the Vmax Gen 2..... the only upgrade for me is the Rocket R 3......love my Max ....... sacrificed for the new Rocket.... ordered!
Vmax1700 is the one !! I ride every day , and I will buy again if come with a new model or not
YAMAHA is the best
You made a very interesting case for the Max tbf
Love the rocket, love the VMax (had one). But 4 years ago I bought a Ducati Diavel Cromo. It's a beast. There's nothing like it......
Vmax all the way! It's the fastest, smoothes ride, best handling, most reliable, cheapest to maintain, best buy in every category.

On looks, I'd have the Rocket 3. I guess on reliability I'd have the VMax. On wanting to push the thing around with manual handling I'd have the Diavel !
I had a V-M a few years back and absolutely loved it. Deff one bike I would buy again. At the time I also had trial runs on the R3 and the Devil.
You surely wont be disappointed. Most fun I have with my clothes on is on the Rocket 3. Such a fun bike!
Yamaha VMax doesn’t have 175 bhp, try 197 or 200 bhp lol 😂
0-60 in 2.5 seconds...
Hell yeah! Love the torque curve on this baby too.
Diavel is the same spec, 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. Max does not have launch mode like the Ducati.
@@jons7436 it didn’t need to, it’s a sub 10 sec 1/4 mile.. The Ducati isn’t, look it just isn’t… There’re enough videos out there, in a straight line the Ducati isn’t in the same league, but when it comes to corners the Ducati is superior.. It also 2.6 not 2.5, that and out the crate the Yamaha was officially clocked at 2.1 0-60… That’s bone stock, you cannot argue with torque, bhp and the fact the Vmax is long and less likely to lift up…
@@alexandersimpson3638 the Ducati has wheelie control. Tech wins with me. The vmax is cool, I had one. I upped my game with the Ducati.
@@jons7436 what, you had a gen 2 with 200 bhp and opted for a sub 170bhp bike… Don’t you miss 50-70mph in 1.09 seconds.. Or owning a bike capable of low 9s 1/4 miles.. I get the handling bit, but the Vmax is built for straight line.. You’re only dude I’ve come across that has crossed to the Ducati after owning a Gen 2 Vmax…
All this love for the V-max!! I've owned 2. An '85 and '05. Its a land rocket!!! Crack the throttle and hold on for dear life!!
Vmax all day
Interesting comparison and good information, thanks. I think if I hold out a little while they'll make a Rocket 3 with a more neutral to sporty riding position.
Both the Rocket and Vmax are bikes which I intend to own one day.
Better start saving your pennies!!
For me it’s
1st performance
2nd looks
3rd price
I’d choose the Ducati cause it’s the only 1 of the three I’ve ridden so far & I really liked it. If I ever get to ride the other two my opinion might change. You don’t know a bike until you actually ride it.
naaah i know just from tech spec data what it be while riding on it i test this couple times and never was susprise something they all was egzacly like i though :x
Diavel S. Has the best lean angle. The higher HP in the others doesn't matter. In a turn it puts the power to the ground.
Vmax ! Yamaha has a great track record and should out perform the Rocket 3 in the quarter but should be close! Congratulations to Triumph for building an awesome bike but if i was in the market it i would stay with the vmax!
Should be close, it know where near close, diavel comes close.
vmax 100-200 5,5 sec rocket 7sec diavel 6 sec ... stock rocket auarter mille in 10,75 sec at 202 km/h stock vmax 9,9 sec at 220 km/h stock diavel 1260 10,2 sec at 215 km/h gap in metress beewten vmax and diavel at finish line is around 20 metres so when vmax cross finish line diavel have 20 metres to end and rocket around 50 metres to finish line so aroudn 30 metres behind diavel :x
All of the above but the Rocket is my new dream bike. Thanks for the “American” weights and measures
V MAX is the best has been since the first one was made. Most bang and low low maintenance cost.
Nothing like the R3. The other 2 also impressive machines but seriously nobody turns their head to say check out that Yamaha...
That's what you think. It's a rad bike. It's a hot rod .
guins99 Lol ask a Vmax owner if that's true.
No one checks truimph anyway, if you are riding ducati you would attract more people than any truimph you will ever own.
Diavel: styled with too much plastic.
Vmax: best engine, ugly.
Rocket: looks comfy and bad ass at the same time. Engine doesn't suck.
@@vulcanman64 lol...can't argue with that retort. I may be a lesbian trapped in a mans body?
Need to ride them, I know the diavel is a sportier ride against the rocket but obviously not on grunt or luxury feel, but then u have the GT which is different again, that is more comfortable for distance. As of April 2020
vmax is 200hp. Not 175.
Yes I've since been informed, thanks Abe. Can you direct me to that official information, I'm having trouble confirming those figures.
@@BikesILike 175 hp to the wheel
@ Ahh I see, thank you!
Bottom line? If a fat enough guy sits on a Vmax and starts driving East at full throttle, it'll temporarily slow the Earth's rotation a little.
@@random_eskimo_in_the_rockies genius, pure genius!!! I dont personally care for the way a gen 2 max feels versus my gen 1, but my god, its amazing to ride!
xDiavel S - completely different bike from the Diavel only sharing the front brake calipers even though similar name - would be a more interesting comparo for this video. Its also more powerful and quicker than the Diavel.
I agree but its also more money.
Triumph rocket 3, it' s my choice.
what drive's my purchase... comfort, weight, reliability
Long time ago, I had a V-Max 1200 for some years and the only happiness I got from it was when I opened full throttle at green lights and its V-boost acceleration on straight roads.
It was just awful at curves at more than 100 km/h and it was a heavy gas drinker.
vmax is the best!!
Yes but Rocket 3 look awesome
Would prefer Rocket
CORRECTION: I made an error in the video, the rear wheel size of the Triumph Rocket III [TFC] is 16" not 17". Official tyre sizes are, Front 150/80 R17 V - Rear 240/50 R16 V
The vmax1700 is actually 203 bhp.
Do you know the LOA of Rocket III TFC?
@@themalaailaanaa1347 Not at the wheel and I believe it is 197-200 but either way the comparison I believe is at the wheel.
@@dumuntai nope this dude give numbers for crank for diavvel and rocket and at the rear wheel for vmax :x
Nice video, but in the end nothing beats riding the bikes to determine which is best for you. I also think a fair compare will be when the standard production rocket is out, not the TFC.
Thanks Alistair, totally agree, will do a video on the 2020 Rocket when more info becomes available.
I owned the first year rocket and the new styling is much sexier. I would still buy the Vmax because of cost.
I love my vmax and magna❤️
Vmax will destroy both on 0-60 and 1/4 mile easily
Easy win for the "200hp Vmax"
Never rode the Diavel (very cool looking bike tho), the rocket 3 is just not very impressive when u hit the throttle it doesnt tickle the wanna go fast itch, but the Vmax will make you change religion when you open that throttle I think anyone who has rode a Vmax will agree its a real eye opening rush.
A melhor análise comparativa de motos que já vi no youtube! Gostei!

when bike hunting in 2019 , I tried the Vmax because it put up a good race against my then 06 gxsr1000 , but those air rams were so uncomfortable riding right on my inner knees that I passed on it.. then I checked out the xdiavel, never test drove it but did sit on it and was just too small for me, I'm 6ft and 220. so after more looking I ran into the Rocket 3 2020 at the time. I absolutely fell in love. test drove it for a couple of miles during the pandemic at OC motorcycle and less then a year later bought mines just over a year ago and love it. it's sick sick sick! I really wanted the TFC edish but that extra 10k was not in my budge. speaking of witch ,this Video gives TFC pricing and not regular pricing. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I want the Triumph most of all but for the price I would have to go for the Ducati. Then again operating costs and real world riding is another factor.
Durability and reliability is what I look for. Any cruiser recommendations?
V-max is a perfect mid range and best value for the money.
I had the 1st & 2nd gen vmax they where beasts. I'd love to try the R3 and DD.
2020 TFC Rocket 3, she's a Beast and a very smooth comfortable ride.. 🤟
Never said any thing about their performance jeeze
I always go for all of the above things when buying a motorcycle..
Well done buddy with the video..
Thank you!
Triumphs are cool but not enough dealers for me. Almost bought one chose a HD road king m8, 6 speed and cruise control, a phenomenal machine. It's my 1st hd now I get it! So many wasted years.
This, it’s tough to buy a bike without dealers to service it.
It's always BEEN V Max always
Ducati numbers are optimistic.
Rocket III is the winner hands down!
Vmax all the way. For the price and reliability alone, but wish there was another gallon of gasoline capacity in the tank! C'mon Yamaha!
What do you mean by reality, Yamaha outperforms them all when it comes to reliability. Small gas tank is they only problem.
The Vmax1700 tyre pressure is 42 front and 42 back.
Perfect for handling and high speed.
The Diavel is lovely...
I have an'05 Rocket that's been breathed on, run Diavels and Vmaxes..ridded them, Rocket has my heart.
If I want to get REALLY stupid, my '83 Suzuki GS1100 ESD drag bike. Rocket will go 225 miles comfortably per tank and looks good doing it.
Triumph all day long. Lot of money but lot of bike.
Diavel. On every level looks from looks to performance to bone shaking sound with full akro exhaust. Best of all, it handles so well.
