      I 3rd the notion.
      Pretty good without a helmet. We splunked in a wet cave outside Bloomington IN. It was brutal. The water was perfect for hypothermia. We did take all the necessary precautions notifying the authorities and what not. You needed a key to unlock the entrance to the drop.

    I seriously admire your sense of adventure. You're living and seeing. I was on a trip to the Black Hills about 5 years ago and took off exploring some of the back roads around Spearfish. Came across a cave you could barely see until right upon it. On a whim I decided to go in a ways with my guitar and strum some tunes. The accoustics were amazing. After about two hours I saw someone with a flashlight coming toward me. Turned out I was on private property and the owner had spotted my trailblazer and had come to chase off trespassers. He said that he had come prepared to be a hardass property owner but could hear the guitar. He sat at the entrance listening for awhile. He told me that there was a cool reverb effect where he was at. He asked me to play more and we hung out in there for a couple of more hours chatting. It was a cool experience and I made a new friend.

    When ever stuck, remember to use momentum to your advantage, as you can use it to get unstuck. Back us a couple inches if possible and hit the brake. Then use use the two inches in front of you to expand your window. Back and forth numerous times will set you free. And remember that if you spin your wheels, you are only digging yourself deeper. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors. T. Johnson

      I owned this generation of Prius and it is astonishingly bad in snow. The ABS and traction control are so aggressively tuned that the vehicle is basically useless on slippery surfaces. If you try to stop, ABS takes over and keeps the wheels rolling. If you try to start and spin, traction control takes over and tries to advance at walking speed. It is frustrating. There is a way to turn off traction control in this generation but I could never remember the input sequence when I needed it.
      All that said, thank you for writing down the tips. They can really help when you are in an unexpected bad spot.

      The Prius is bad ass, and it cuts down on carbon foot prints. Problem is we have to invade countries like Afghanistan and then bring in mining companies from China to mine the lithium to make the batteries that run the Prius. You know, all those illegal wars in the middle east with criminal under the table deals with CHINA against the American people and all.
      When you buy a Prius, you're supporting middle east wars, and the selling out of the USA to CHINA, as our spirit guides are telling us to do.
      You know, that whole religious based, ascended master worship, mother goddess worship treason thing that's so common in our country now.

    For future reference, when on an incline in a prius where it is slipping on snow you can back up that hill in reverse no sweat. I did that on an extremely steep incline. Worked like a champ.

    • @scottkolby9123
      @scottkolby9123 2 роки тому +8

      That's what we do in rural northern Minnesota with 2WD cars. Go backwards on inclines so that you are using the weight of the engine over the front axle to move you uphill. Or, drive forwards in a VW where the engine sits over the rear axle; they do very well in the snow for this reason.

Always go with a group three or more and some protection, sidearm bear spray and let someone know where you are exactly that day. Also get an x-ray and CT on your knee to check for any serious damage, you may need surgery to avoid long term chronic issues. Alternative won't be sufficient

    Nikki, heavy tire chains (the ones with real chain links, not those cable ones) will get you out of just about anything, but they are a pain to put on. Here's a little tip. Take some 2x6 and make yourself a wheel platform, a short length of plank about 24 inches long, then attach some 1-inch planking sections onto the top, spaced so that the chain cross-link sections can lie between the top sections. Screw the top sections down with the heads of the screws below the surface, so that you don't beat the tires. Saw the front end of the plank at an incline, so your car can ride up onto the plank assembly. Now, lay the chain down over the plank with the cross-sections lying in the slots. Leave the open end of the chain stretched out where the car does not drive over it. Drive up onto the plank, and your chain is free to be pulled over the wheel and adjusted for tension, as the tire is sitting on the top plank sections, not on the chain. Works like a charm!
    You can slap your chains on in three minutes flat using this technique. The nice thing about having the plank is that if you have a flat and cannot get the jack under the frame rail, just drive the flat up onto the plank and you get instant clearance. Always nice!

    This is the first video of your's that I've watched, but based on your refusal to stop until your car couldn't go any further I have a recommendation. If you might encounter snow again, especially on a back road, consider getting tire chains that are actual chains instead of the cable chains. Real chains will give you more grip, but more importantly they are more durable. If you are on a road where your car is struggling and spinning the wheels a bit, cable chains can be destroyed very quickly. Real chains, even the light weight variety, can take a little more abuse. Also, actual chains often come with a couple of repair links, or they can be repaired with bailing wire in a pinch. Cable chains are difficult or impossible to repair.
    Old fashion ladder chains are usually the toughest, but also usually require the most clearance and are the roughest to drive on. And, I don't know if your car has the clearance for these. The newer diamond pattern chains might be a good compromise, but I'd stay away from any with a delicate looking self tensioning system.

    I was pleased to see you get the stretchers for your snow chains. They make a huge difference in getting the chains tight enough for a light car like yours to work well. Also, your caving was neat. As a geologist they looked like lava tubes and were probably pretty solid. I used to leave a note in my car (upside down so you could not read it from the outside) with detailed plans and contact numbers. I was more worried about my car being vandalized then having the cave fall in on me.
