Nikki - PLEASE - Take this from a guy that was born in Lubbock Texas. In a tornado DON'T head for a room full of free weights and other equipment that could easily kill you if it all starts being thrown around ! ! !
I thought the exact same thing as a tornado survivor. Motels/hotels bathrooms are typically in the interior. Go there.
I think it's great she was in an interior room at all. So many people caught in night tornadoes are completely oblivious until their house is coming apart.
Plus if the room I'm in is coming apart, I'd be more worried about flying wood than the heavy equipment.

This hotel had a weird design it was between the bathroom on the top floor or the only room in the whole hotel without windows (where I was and was directed to go interestingly enough). Better than the top outer floor of you ask me but totally see what you’re saying. Better than the car that’s a sure sign!

Unless your hotel has an underground group shelter, your best option was: Grab a couple (or few) pillows and a blanket and go to the bathroom (they are built strong). Shut the door, throw pillows in the bathtub, crawl in, pull Camper in with you, cover up and wait it out.
Thanks for letting me know, the hotel suggested as I was on the top floor vs center room ground floor! Yikes!
Bathtub is the safest place...but you also want to be on the lowest floor possible in an interior room. I'd pick a first floor hallway over an upstairs bathroom. /Live in tornado alley
I didn't realize you were on the top floor. If the roof comes off it really doesn't matter which room you're in. So heading down was good. I would've still gone for a restroom of closet.
Nikki yes lower floor had a local a few years ago sucked ip through the rokf.and left out in nearby field. Yes he went through the roof had minor cuts and scratches and bruises a very lucky man. Neighbor across the road was killed trying to get in her car. If at rest stop or near road remember any bridge you can take shelter in your car and if you see tornado climb to narrow space near the top and hang on tight to Camper and the bridge. From a retired lineman that was out I worst weather

My dog would always be the first thing I grab. Tornadoes can be unnerving, but earthquakes freak me out. I've got caught a few times in severe thunderstorms that spawned tornadoes. Once I was taking my elderly parents to the doctor. The winds lifted back of my F350 off the road. Luckily it wasn't for long, and I regained control quickly. But lost my windshield to hail. Thank God you both are ok

I'm glad you and Camper are safe! I have 3 dogs that nobody wanted, I love all three, it gets challenging sometimes, but I wouldn't have it any other way. 1 blue healer, a pomeranian and a Pekingese.

That was amazing! My husband I enjoy Prius camping when we can, so I always watch you and learn your tips. I'm soooo glad the tree didn't hit your Prius! And then the dreaded check engine light turned out ok too. I didn't know the gas cap could go bad. Camper had me laughing too. So glad you are ok and on the road again.

I haven’t seen this video although you talked about it at the hocking hills tornado. This one came in close sparing the Prius by mere inches. However, the best part of the video was when he SANK on the seat as you took the cooler out. Camper, you provided the light moment when you just got through a disaster. Ms. Nikki is lucky to have you shining light and memorable moments to ease a terrible situation.

3:59 I drove from Southern California to Chicago via Oklahoma years ago (pre iPhone). Back then all that was said on the radio, for hours, was "please take tornado precautions". Being from California I had no idea what tornado precautions were. I was amazed that local radio producers didn't think that non-locals could be listening.
It was the only time in my life I was legit scared.

Glad you are safe. My dogs are trained to go to the basement when the tornado sirens go off. Thankfully it wasn't tough to teach them since the tornado sirens scare them. I'm glad that they know what to do if I'm not home.

Your dog is a gift from the universe for your contribution. And as a dog owner I know it doesn’t always feel like it… but you stopped in that hotel because you were taking care of Camper! That tree being one car away was a sign! You may have averted something far worse! It karma!

Insane that tree was so incredibly close to the Prius. Glad that you two are safe and sound. Living in the Midwest most of my life, I am comfortable with Tornados, but it can be intense at times.

Oh and Nikki, I bet you dollars to donuts that Camper has foxhound/beagle in him!!! His attentiveness and demeanor points to it PLUS he has a white tip on his tail and white paws!! Totally signs of these dogs. Im a beagle owner of over 24 years and those signs are unmistakable!! THEY ARE GREAT DOGS!!!!!!!

I feel myself gearing up mentally to live like this someday. Im just loving the freedom. I do not believe I can take care of a dog as successfully as you can so I won't choose that option. I just want to drive and look around, drive and look around, drive some more and look around some more and not wind up in the same spot until at least a year has passed.
