Keith Richards - Cocaine Blues

- This is Keith's cover of the classic blues-song originally written and recorded by Luke Jordan back in 1927.
It's not the best version of the song I have heard, but it's a moving version. Enjoy.
Keith Richards: guitar and vocals (1994).
The lyrics:
well, yonder comes my baby all dressed in white
see baby gonna stay all night
cocaine all around my brain
yonder comes my baby all dressed in blue
see baby what you gonna do
cocain all around my brain
hey baby come here quick
this old cocaine is making me sick
cocain all around my brain
cocaine's for horses, its not for men
they say it'll kill you but they don't say when
cocain all around my brain
ohh baby would'nt you get here quick
this old cocaine is making me sick
cocain all around my brain
it's all around my brain
I'm 62. Been playing the guitar since elementary school... because of this guy. Someone asked me 'do you remember when you first became aware of who Keith Richards was?' I said 'I don't remember not knowing who he was'.
I can't thank him enough.
Keith should do more stuff like this. He's an excellent acoustic player and was a choral singer as a kid. He knows what he's doing.
A genuine rock star. He doesn't have to try, he just is. That's a rare thing
Agreed. And his blues feel is fucking pure and awesome.
Exactly !!!
He is motherfucking badass
He said he knows he's not the greatest guitarist in the business, but he knows how to be a Rolling Stone. :-D
Primarily, he's a great musician.
Its only when you start to learn the guitar that you can really appreciate Keith's guitar playing.
IrishBard unreal timing and taste. It’s the same sensibility that Miles has.
Amen to that.
Dude you are so right. You like took the words out of my mouth I'm going to restart the song really quick
Technically not the best by far but he compensates that with his rhytm
Sir Tristan Lol
Keith is a legend. this song reminds me of my Dad's battle substance abuse after he came back from Vietnam in 71
Keith, for Gods sake make an acoustic blues album....this is where your at right about now brother!!
When Keith Richards Does Heroin....Heroin Get's High.
"I've never had a problem with drugs. I've had problems with the police"
"Some doctor told me I had six months to live and I went to his funeral"
"I never thought I was wasted. But I probably was"
"It's a addiction.. And addiction is something I should know about"
"I only get ill when I give up drugs"
When the world Apocolaypse occurs, the only survivor will be Keith Richards.
Ozzy will be there right next to him.
You forgot one. It’s on YT somewhere. They interviewed him and his wife (still a beauty)going into a party.
He said “She keeps me on the straight and narrow”. “ Weed and whiskey only”. And he walked off with a wry smile on his face.
😎
Some of the best quotes known to mankind, other than those of Hunter Stockton Thompson, that is.
"It's great to be here. It's great to be anywhere."
Keith is one of the best acoustic players I have ever heard. His open tuned electric chords established a new genre of music he also wrote hundreds of songs
Keith is a fantasticaly talented musician
This song is all for all times
Beautiful guitar work and tone, Keith’s voice goes perfect on this song
We won't cry when he passes on, we'll just raise a beer and know he defied logic
C Synch He is immortal
You made me tear up . That was touching
I’ll cry
Let’s not talk about death in correlation to this master of life
If I outlive him I will cry a river when he goes
Beautiful fingerpicking by Keith such a unique voice it’s going to be a sad day when we loose Keith but he’ll probably outlive everyone
It's always been really refreshing for me to listen to Keith's voice, it's so pure and natural in comparison to most of todays singers with their "perfect" voices, who don't really mean anything when they sing. In the end it's really up to personal preference whether you like his voice or not, but Keith sings with meaning, and when you sing with meaning, you've got the goods.
Exactly
I remember a quote from the 80s, I don't remember who said it...Keith Richards is the best off-key singer in the world. Or words to that effect.
He has a soft sexy voice. I could listen to him sing all day...
His voice is so real!
Such a cool soft vibe
Kieth is the best musician ever!!
absolutely brilliant-- between the nuanced finger picking and the heart-felt singing. Whoa! No one better.
Great version of the song, never knew Keith had a good voice. Perfect for old blues songs.
A pure blue's man.
Fantastic
this song is not to be sniffed at
Robert Creighton oops
Robert Creighton , ha ha! Or smoked upon.
But sniffed along with
Everyone nose that
Glad he didn't blow it.
He can sing, and I loved his guitar tone here.
He can play it as good as the masters (he's one of them now) and his voice is perfect for singing these raw acoustic blues.
M
Hey man, watch my cover of this song!) You will not regret.
Fabulous , very much in the style of the Rev. Gary David, whose version I really love . Keith, you too are a class act, sounds like you come from the Deep South, your voice belongs to the blues.
This cat's sposed to be a big bad boy, but he seems such a straight up good soul. Like Bob said, "To live outside the law, you must be honest."
what do you mean with it
And as Lemmy said, "to live outside the law, you have to give a damn"
this cold ones for Lemmy, next ones for you ImI
Kastelruther spatzen
Dreamwell Keith has been clean for decades. Now he is just alcoholic. Not illegal.
Keith Richards is the perfect example for Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll
Stefan Raeuber he's the perfect example of how to survive it
he is the rock and roll in person....THE FUCKING LEGEND AND THE GOAT
Realisticly all rock stars do lol
You’re wrong, it’s not Keith Richard but me (Keith is too old for that)
@@MrSleazymoney wrong channel, it's rock n roll, not golf, butt munch
Keith is a underestimated artist with a guitar in his heart and blues in his delighted soul
Underestimated? Nah....He IS Keith Richards....
the guitarist of the band who rivaled the beatles is underestimated? every one praises how dirty and soulful he is lol.
By Whom??
i was never that big of a stones fan. but keith has always impressed me and that admiration only grows as i get older.
Guys..this is 100% Keith, anyone who's heard him sing anything else or speak even will know, this is him...
no one is better than keith. period.
"cocaine's for horses, its not for men ,
they say it'll kill you but they don't say when "
Great lyric *.*
I'm reading his book for the second time. It's truly inspiring to see how good a man can be while acting on every dubious notion that comes into his head. I have thrown out the window all of my good resolutions in favor of acting once again, at age 66, on every dangerous lunatic habit and stunt that I've ever done in the past. I seek the good life of inspiration, art and criminality, and the universe can kiss my ass.
THANK YOU
KEITH
GOD BLESS YOU
(from italy)
Keith , love of my life left me Yesterday , listening to this gave me some hope , even if i don't know why , and i' never tried cocaine , it's just your music .thank you
Espetáculo. keith é um gênio.
ANYBODY ELSE CAN`T SING THIS SONG SO FINE! LISTEN LISTENREALLY HARD!
This man takes the coolest pictures... Would love to have his wardrobe through the years.
He says his daughter nicks stuff from his closet.
No doubt! Could you imagine Keith being your old man???
He also used to steal clothes from Anita!
so much for the "hes just a junky" haters.....the guy knows his blues.
huskvarsm I'm more into American folk, stones is a bit too up tempo for me. I had no idea the guy was so heavily influenced, love it.
I think they were among the first, if not the first, of the British Invasion to find and play with all the living blues legends they could back in the '60s. Before that, they were heavily influenced from across the pond.
That's the trouble with the Stones, taking the wrong kind of dope, that provides no deep insight in the beauty of creation.
Brits can't
@@thememo9941 can't what?
Keef, such a quintessential badass. His book "Life" was amazing.
rocksunjaxindie I just bought it yesterday.
amazing? you wait until brian jones writes an autobiography. that would amaze.
Freewheeling Frere too bad he’s dead
Great read
I took me years to decide to go ahead and read that book, but yeah, it is amazing. You can listen to it as an audiobook, too.
Keith, you are a true miracle of making it thru the storm🎉🎉
they say it'll kill you but they don't say when ;)
hahahaha- nope....they don't.
looool :P
+rollit06 Keith wink to me at a concert one time he should be primminister
It's reaaly beautiful when we see a song getting dressed as a perfect clothe for someone...I just think it fits Keith personality as glove fits a hand... beautiful voice, great playing....sincere and heartfelt!
Marcelo Cortez
I also cry to this.Peter Green's jumping at shadows, especially the live version from 1970 Boston Tea Party has the same effect on my soul.
they said it kill you but they don't tell you when, we'll see Keith your immortal
"At least I never turned blue in anyone's bathroom. I mean, I consider that the height of bad manners."
Keith I remember you won best R & B guitarist of the year back in what, 1974 or something like that. But I wondered why you never played lead. Whoa, man, you are one bad, bad bad man! You can play anything, and I know you won over Eric, but your playing on Prodigal Son, or factory girl, or this one or any one is just a great testament to your outstanding genius, and the words you relay from the man who told you to just keep moving is the best thing I could hear you say. thanks Keef, thanks.
Grande Keith Richards!! um dos melhores do Rock and roll.. na minha opinião.
He may not be the best singer in the world, but the feeling he puts in is overwhelming... and he´s the best guitar in the world
I love this, no hyperbole just plain-stating facts
Mallika Chauhan amore
i think this is a truely beautiful version.simple, from the heart and an expert on the subject matter!!u have to have done it to sing about it i rekon...
Wonderfull.I've listened to versions of this by various old and young blues singers including a great version by Stefan Grossman and this stands up with the best.
Even he is old man today, but always feel when I see him and mike that they more younger then I’m .i wish him longevity and strong health.
wow, he really takes blues to places they've never been before. Amazing. (cough exhaling bong smoke).
We all know that feeling
Never realized how good his playing is till I found this video. Fantastic timing, switchs between soloing and fingerpicking effortleslly.
simple and effective...champ of riffs
Man, Keith's voice just got better in age
sniffing it now and playing my stratocaster, without my amp hooked up. just a little treat on a lonely summer night in south east usa, listening to the bugs chirping... beautiful... i can play this too... maybe i ought to get my acoustic out the truck...
sounds like you had a nice night 6 months ago.
I haven't heard something that beautiful for a long long time.
there is something really soulful about Keith Richards singing. I'd love to see him do an acoustic record of rolling stones tracks
Wish I could like this a million times. Go on Keith! Love you dude.
A killer performance. And it's awesome the way that the photo montage contours to the music.A work of art,
Forget what I said.Keith is a great person beyond words to express.Between Keith & Van Ronk, I would rather see Keith Richards again.
I cry like a child when I hear this
His guitar , the pure art he has played all these years, hits licks like no other period!
Keith" I never go sick doing drugs.I only got sick when I wasn't doing em!!!
God bless keith,he brings alot to us forever
Simply wonderful... Never heard it before & greatly appreciate the download!
What a joy to hear this famous song just stripped down to Keith and his guitar.
Keith, God of rock.
This is the Rev Gary Davis song. Lyrics ever changing through time. happy bday Keith
love it Keith CAN sing the blues
"My candle burns at both ends and it will not last the night but oh, my foes and ah, my friends it gives such wondrous light". Emily wrote that and Keefer lived it. And his candle still burns.
sounds awesome keith!!!
Lots of white bluesmen are disrespected because they did not truly value the black blues tradition. It seems Keith Richard's commitment to the music has transcended any criticism & he seems to have remained humble himself...that attitude pretty much appreciated across all cultures.
Rolling Stoned :-)
Rolling stoned ✌
Always
Great version , love the groove and the tempo, guitar has just enough twang and the accent and feel hits the mark. Sounds like he's enjoying himself. Cheers fae Bonnie Scotland
Amen to that. Fae bonnie Scotland aswell
I found it on a bootleg series from 2003 wich is called "Keith Richards - Sure the one you need vol.1-3"
What a hero for all the youth of today, he should be ashamed of Himself.
fuck off donald
beautiful keith really beautiful.
Absolutely speechless.
Actually I think its a great version. Thanks for sharing. Just shows KR is a bril guitarist
This is Keith at his best. Just relaxed and picking away. Good song

Keith's really a great bluesman when he's just pickin out stuff on his guitar and singing. Doesn't matter much what shape his voice is in that day (he smokes and he smokes....) he always does it comfortably for himself, totally natural.....A Nat'l Bluesman.......yeah yo' rite..
I’ve loved this song my whole life! I recently did a cover of this on my channel but nobody compares to Keith ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Long life to Keith Richards
I'm sure that Keith must've learned this from Dave Van Ronk's version. Dave probably learned it from Rev Davis, but Rev Davis doesn't add the bridge and he talks the words rather than singing them. Even though he says the words, "Baby, come here quick...", he plays the same chords as the verse. Dave added the bridge.
Luke Jordan's is a different song with the same title. David Bromberg does a cover of Luke's song.
yeah, Keith is channeling DVR. Makes me want to go out and see the new Coen Brothers movie.
the rolling stones formed over their love for the blues and successfully reintergrated the blurs back into mainstream music
@MokaiMusic This was actually recorded in the early 90s. I think its safe to say he was on drugs. Coke, weed, downers, probably not smack but who really knows.
Best song on UA-cam.
This is not a version of Luke Jordan 's Cocaine Blues but of a different song with the same name, this is Keith's version of Rev. Gary Davis' Cocaine Blues. Keith plays it identical, same key, same picking. Davis said that he learned the song in 1905 from a traveling carnival musician.
Familiar with Dave Van Ronk's recording, which is the same arrangement. If it's Davis' I'm sure he was given credit.

This is one of Rev. Gary B. Davis' original recorded versions. He actually often played with lyrics whenever he performed the song. He added the opening verses Jackson Browne used while playing it in Houston. "Head up Scott, Left on Main. Lookin for that girl who sells cocaine." This is an intersection on the backside of Downtown Houston at Scott and Main. The very first verse was added then also, "Every time me and my old lady step uptown, Tryin to track some of that cocaine down." I met him during this time and heard him do it. Don't know how Jackson Browne new about those verses. The Rev. never recorded that version that I know of.
Just like the song of jackson browne,,
Just browsing through videos on youtube..and i just love discovering new tunes i never heard like this one..makes you feel good to know its true music never dies
This would have been an excellent song to have released on Cross-eyed Heart.
Keith is one of the best guitarists in the world .
if you really think this is MJH then you need to listen to his version again...its KR
If this isn't MJH, then it's DAMN close.
I'm suprised how good this is.
just when i thought I'd heard everything from Keef i stumble upon this little treasure. fantastic little piece of blues playing from the master. What year was it recorded?
Nothing but the finest from all time kick arse guitar players in History.
That is Keith 100% Keith I Know his voice and since I sing and play I have a very good ear for voices too
Plus it's his style of playing
Malies Mertsch Geer : dork
my favorite song to play on the acoustic, simple and beautiful.

Great song, great performance and great accompanying photos! Thanks for this.
