13:46 Instead of eyeballing the scale, just calculate the ratio of the image dimensions: For a 640x8000 image, type *640/8000* into the Y scale of the Mapping node, and leave the X scale at *1.0* to correct the aspect ratio. Then, if you want to change the overall scale, just add another mapping node, or use Object coordinates of an Empty and scale/move that instead of fiddling with sliders on nodes. ;) (You can look up the image dimensions in Blender's Image or UV Editor: Press _N_ to open the sidebar and go to the _Image_ tab.) Anyway, cool idea, and great result. Thanks!
I've been using Photopea for about 5 years now, and JUST now watching this video did I find out about beveling an existing shape using the properties panel. Thanks for that.
I would have just recorded a screen record i my phone and used the video as a texture, probably simpler, altho the extra control you get after is definitely useful. great video as always 👍
One thing I noticed-not to take away from the value of this tutorial-was that when you zoomed in on the map in the animation, the scaling was from the centre of the entire map image, rather than from a point on the screen. It's a little detail, but just something to be aware of. The easiest way to compensate for that would be animating the location simultaneously with the zoom to bring the desired point to the centre of the phone's screen. I'm sure more math-minded people could come up with a node setup that would work that out based on the deviation of the X and Y location and would adjust the location automatically, but that seems needlessly complicated.
remember to set the color space on the grunge texture at 10:05 from sRGB to Non-color, that way you get more accurate roughness values :D edit: really good tutorial btw!
Very nice now that I’ve watched a more grass roots phone tut this will be a lot easier I probably should have started with something simpler haha but I’m learning very fast now lol
Dammit. I read it too fast and came out with “Blender working IN A SMART PHONE!” and mother of pearl i almost spit my coffee out I was so excited for a moment
just take a screen recording turn it into an image sequence if it's necessary and connect a mapping node to correct the size. no image editing needed except the mask or inset the screen face and make it the screen material.
Right, but the point is to be able to put whatever you want on screen. I used screencaps, but you can make your own screens in Photoshop or whatever. If you're showing a close-up of a phone screen in an animation, you're probably trying to show specific information. Eg a fake news broadcasts.
How are you getting the rounded screen like that? It doesn't do that when I bevel. My phone is horizontal as if laid on a table, I don't know if that affects anything. I just get lines allover my screen/face

12:04 you have a very bright and contrasting texture here. whatever settings I make, it seems to be the same as yours - the screen is faded .. I have to use the screen texture in the davinchi resolve. How you did it?..)
Do you find that the color of the mobile phone screen is very dim at 19:09? As long as the texture is mostly white, the image will become very dull and the color will not match the original image. I'm now rendering a screen with the same problem.

Yeah, some basic math should be included with such video tutorial, especially if working with nodes. I don’t like “let’s eyeball everything” altitude

who would think that such a simple thing as adding a video to a smartphone can be THAT complex. wow

it doesn't really make a difference in this case because it wasn't encoded in a linear colour space.

You could probably boost the colors just by running the image through a hue/saturation node and playing with the values.

Mind Blown. 🔥
why not just do a screen recording from your phone?
You can't sync that to an animated character.

Couldn’t you just use a recording of a phone screen instead of doing everything manually?
in a practical situation, you're going to want to make a custom images to display certain information.
why not just screen record your screen and you that as the screen video
