Funny because Rocco was scared shitless when Liston’s name came up. Marciano could not have lasted in the ring with the prime Middleweight Champ of the era Sugar Ray Robinson. Rocco was a fatty who had to be monitored to keep his pasta busting gut in condition. Rocco was slower than a turtle 🐢, poor dumb Rocco was slow of hands and feet.. Why else was all his opponents small fat, old, or so inexperienced they were given fights with the Turtleman. Marciano even fought one of his Championship fights with a Boxer who had just loss a fight, why wasn’t Randy Turpin choose instead ? Old Joe Lewis fought almost 4 times as many fighters as a Champ as the supposedly undefeated Rocco. Lewis also has more knockouts than Rocco. Lastly Lewis. has the record of being the Champ the longest with the most opponents.

Yeah a cartoon Joe Palooka that’s the real Rocco Francis Marchegiano aka Rocky Marciano. A fake if there ever was one. Rocco never in his whole career fought one decent fighter, they were either to old, sic, or weren’t qualified for a fight with a fighter above the lower class of heavyweights.
Rocky is such a strange case. I guess the one word I would use to describe his is “grit”. He started so late and finished with no losses. It’s unbelievable what he was able to achieve.

@@danoliver3470 going undefeated as a Heavyweight is almost impossible because how hard they hit, as a welterweight still very impressive to be undefeated but not as much as a Heavyweight. Chavez senior went 88 fights before he lost.
It's this same incredible heart combined with an incredible boxing talent that makes Smokin Joe my favourite. I still think he would have prevailed in Ali vs Frazier 3 had he been allowed to answer the bell for the 15th.
The ability to go the distance throwing 100 bombs a round made Rocky special. I am an amateur boxer and I'm okay but I'm not a HW and I could not go even 8 rounds throwing bombs like that without being completely gassed.

A lot of ppl bring up Rockys competition saying it was easier in his day, but this is mistaken. Rocky fought some real quality. La Starza was 53-3 when they fought! Don Cockell was 66-11, and British Champ. Archie Moore was in his prime having just won the Lightheavyweight title and holding it for 10 years, having cleared out the Heavyweight division to fight Rocky. A terrific Heavyweight record. One of the best boxers ever. Went on a major winning streak after getting pounded within an inch of his life by Marciano. Archie even gets another Heavyweight title shot when Marciano retires. Moore fought nearly 200 fights in his career and lost only 23 of them. 143 knockouts. Jersey Joe Walcott was in the prime of his life, ranked 16th best Heavyweight ever by International Boxing Research Organization. Ranked No. 10 by Boxrec. A guy who had cleared out the entire Heavyweight division to win the Championship. A real legend of the ring. A man who probably should have beaten Joe Louis when Louis was still Champ, but was robbed by a poor judging decision when most (including Louis) thought Walcott had won. And then Ezzard Charles, a little past his prime perhaps when he fought Rocky but both men were similar age and Charles is excellent in their first fight. Charles is ranked 17th ever by International Boxing Research Organization. He is still winning and beating quality fighters to earn another title opportunity. Far from washed up. This isn't poor or mediocre competition. It's solid competition and Rocky could have lost any of these fights against these quality athletes. He beat them all. He beat them up badly, most of them never recovered and their careers went into meltdown after fighting him. 49-0, with 43 knockouts against this kind of opposition is absolutely incredible and will never ever be repeated. That Rocky stood out head and shoulders above everyone else in this era, including these excellent boxers, should demonstrate just how special he was.

As my parents told me the story they of Greek decent and my dad was watching Marciano v Moore and when the fight caught my Mom's eye she watched for awhile and said that's not fair to be fighting an old man. Ok?
Starza fought four more times after fighting Rocky. So he was most definitely not in his prime. Rocky also beat an old Joe Louis as well. No doubt Rocky was an amazing fighter, but I disagree with some of the points made in your statement.
The fight between him and the legendary Joe was sad because Rocky looked up to him as a hero and felt hurt doing what he had to do. At Rocky's funeral, Joe was there crying on his casket
My true hero of the ring, l boxed a bit and kick boxed a bit , won two state titles and my biggest award was from my trainer saying l remind him of Rocky, wow, what a thing to say, l was only 5 ft 7.5 ins but was very angry and determined . Im 65 now but lm always proud of what he said. Rocky R.I.P

That's a good age. Ali basically had to do the same thing since he was locked away in prison. Had he did it earlier I think he wouldn't be as tough as he was then. 25 is like the body prime of males. 25-30 physically.
Rocky ran at least 5 miles a day, 365, with several pounds of sand built into each leather combat boot designed by a local shoe mogul. When a fight was signed he'd run 8 to 10 miles, and usually the last week up it to 12 miles. He said, "if you train like i do, your legs will carry you 40 rounds." Rocky would also include running uphill forward, downhill backwards, repeat. I remember reading that quote several decades ago. Then out of nowhere i recently stumbled across an isolated vid and Rocky said, "this is where the road work pays off. If your up at the bust of dawn everyday while your training, running up and down hill, your legs will carry you 40 rounds." On top of that Rocky liked to walk another 5 to 10 miles in the late afternoon or evening. And he did all this in the hilly country around Grossinger's, where he trained. It was Rocky's obsession with conditioning that kept him training 365 days a year and this dedication gave him stamina never seen before in a fighter. Didn't know Rocky trained like that but it makes sense. Conditioning and discipline are essential. I wonder what happened to Ricky's special shoes with the sand in them? Thats another great idea. We don't hear enough about Rocky.

Ive been watching boxing my whole life and it amazes me how this guy never ever doubted himself..his willpower was unreal..I really believe he actually thought he could not be beaten. One thing is for certain, he was one of if not the best conditioned heavyweight boxers I have ever seen. In the second Charles fight he threw over 100 punches in the last round and that was the days of 15 round fights..imagine that..in the 15th round, not only throwing 100 punches but most if not all of them with as much power as he could muster.Marciano had the worst accuracy of any heavyweight, and in my opinion I believe that is why he didnt ko guys earlier than he did, but when he did connect to the jaw, they went.

Man, the end of this made me emotional. Of course I know of Rocky Marciano and all his great fights, but to see all this footage is something else. The man was an absolute force of nature. Not the most skilled or the most finessed, but I definitely believe he was the most determined and dangerous heavyweight of all time. When Muhammad Ali himself mentions being sure that Marciano would have given him issues, that's a testament to what a danger he was to anyone who stepped in the ring with him.
Rocky Marciano was one of the best humans to walk the face. Truly a good guy in a savage game, he took the role model position seriously and worthy of looking up to.

it was his stamina that was unmatched . he had a baseball bat for arms and a heart that would not quit. only turned pro at 25 for smucks sake. he done something right in the boxing realms .
He never ran out of stamina and that's another thing that made him terrifying. Someone summed it up perfectly with "Imagine this guy just won't stop coming for you. His punches feel like a sledgehammer and he never tires and so you don't don't have the hope that he will tire eventually. Even if you keep knocking him around, he refuses to throw the fight under any circumstance, even if his nose is almost knocked off. Even if you knock him down here and there, it isn't a guaranteed victory cause he knocked out Charles at Round 13 when he was down on the score cards. This guy was the definition of "Just throw the damn towel and live to fight another day". That's what made him so fascinating
The most conditioned fighter of all time (Mayweather Jr in terms of conditioning is close, very close) and the hardest man to ever set foot in the ring.
The man just got the world's best record of any Heavyweight. The 4th best KO per fight ratio. He knocked down every opponent, even the 6 that didn't went out by KO. He's considered top5 cardio and conditioning boxer of all time. And was elected by the best boxers and coaches the 14th best puncher in a 100 top punchers list of all time. And people have the nerve to say he was average. Yup. That's why he would be a legend for the ages and in 150 years no one will remember your useless butts.

Another testament to his greatness is the fact that his opponents were never the same after fighting him. The continuous onslaught that they endured from Mariano’s fists seems to batter their spirits as well as their bodies

Love watching videos on Rocky Marciano. Often you'll here people say that he never fought anyone in their prime. Well I would just like to say that Rocky was 25 when he got into boxing and was 29yrs old when he fought Jersey Joe Wolcott for the heavyweight title. So he wasn't exactly in his prime either. I would also like to point out that his 49-0 record with 43kos was done in a 7yr period. Do the math and that's 7 fights per year. THAT'S INSANE!!! And would just like to add that I think the unfortunate thing for Marciano is that he was born either 10yrs to early or 10yrs to late. I mean if he was born 10yrs earlier and fought a prime Joe Louis and won what could you say. Where as born 10yrs later and fought a prime Muhammad Ali again what could you say. I'm not saying that he would have won, but im not saying he wouldn't have.I don't care what anyone says, Marciano had qualities that just can't be taught .
If Ali had faced Rocky in a 15 round fight I think he would have out pointed him. If it had been an open ended fight like in the real olden days where the fight didn't stop until one fighter drops or quits, then Rocky would have ground him into dust. Same with Frazier imo. In each of the 3 fights vs Ali, both fighters were destroyed but it was Joe that clearly had the will to go another 15 rounds if the need arose.

I don't think Ali could have knocked him out but I think Ali could have remained safe from Rock for longer than he could Joe. I think Rock would have required upto 20 to wear All down and knock him out.
@@billhoare7404 Agreed, which is why I think he could have lasted the 20 rounds that it would have taken him to knock Ali out. In both cases, Ali would have succumbed if the bout was allowed to continue indefinitely. However, Joe would have reached that point sooner because he was naturally a better boxer. I think a more interesting bout would have been Rocky vs Joe and honestly I think that one is harder to pick. Either way, Joe is probably my favorite all time boxer although both Patterson and Foreman hold a special place in my heart. Patterson for his gutsy he is and Foreman because he really did achieve a level of humility that we can all learn from.
Fought the best and defeated the best, he didnt have nothing but boxers on his record no youtubers no mma fighters, just brilliant boxing, i wish i lived in these times this is a whole other level, and the beauty of these recordings is that you can always watch on repeat and never need to PPV, its a real boxing match for free !
Burt Randolph sugar had him at number four on his list of all time heavyweights. The list went in order from Joe Louis at number one, Muhammad Ali at number 2 down to Larry Holmes number 10 on his top 10 list. Bert sugar was the editor of the Ring magazine. I think he knew a little bit about boxing...,. And because he knew a bit about boxing, he agrees with you about Rocky being in the top five. Muhammad Ali was another top 5 tough guy. Ain't nobody taking the kind of punishment he took in his later years. Another top five tough guy I would put up there for taking hits was George Foreman. People underestimate his chin. He was only knocked out one time, and that was because he was exhausted and spent all his punches and energy against Muhammad Ali. Ali did knock him out on power, just wore him out cuz he was being stupid. Take a look at the Foreman versus holyfield fight. I don't know how Foreman took all that. And Ron Lyle against George Foreman. That was like watching two lumberjacks axe each other down! That was a man's fight!
Rocky retired when I was a boy. He was adored by my dad & 2 oldest brothers. I love watching his films & learning about him. He was not a technically superior boxer. We respected the fact that he worked harder than all of his opponents, was highly courageous & determined to win, took a hell of a punch, was quite small 4 a heavyweight & a nice man. .. After I saw the film of him beating Joe Louis, realized how very old Mr. Louis was, that Rocky had to fight him to get a title shot, how Mr. Louis' manager took advantage of him, our government pressured him for taxes his manager should have ensured he paid from Joe's earnings & knowing that Mr. Louis was a national hero who served our country & gave US hope when he defeated Schmelling, I decided I would never again watch Rocky beating Louis. It is a bit sickening for me to see. If both were in their prime & if Mr. Louis' trainers would have properly trained him to fight Rocky, either 1 could have won.

I think you did a great job on this video. I've always respected Marciano's power. Plus, the only thing I've ever seen in most videos of him against Walcott was the tremendous KO. Never seen anyone so KOd as Walcott. I thought he'd killed him. But this video taught me a lot about Rocky. My goodness, he was a Tasmanian Devil in the ring. Just endless punching. His stamina reminds me of Roberto Duran at his peak. His swarming, bobbing, and weaving, remind me of a combination of Joe Frazier, and Mike Tyson. No wonder he never lost......
Any other fans ever wonder if the legendary old fighters (Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, etc etc) were "built different" mentally and physically due to the times they lived in? Most boxers today seem like athletes to me. These old era fighters seem to be tough as nails and so used to being uncomfortable and just wanting to "go to war". I understand that the boxers of today are 2x the size of these old fighters, but boxing in the great depression era?! (I understand Louis v. Marciano was in '51) Just living day to day back then was absolute HELL. Especially for fighters growing up in the neighborhoods and conditions they did.. Tough times = tough people....apparently. Thankful we as fans have these fights recorded
Try putting a Tyson Fury onto the 50s or a Rocky into the 21st c. Not pretty for modern fighters I don't think, I reckon Rocky would destroy them with all today's advantages
I have been waiting for a Rhythm theatrical take on the man that is my Dad's namesake and the man that has served as my lifetime in ring guardian angel, the Brockton Blockbuster himself. Never been nor ever will be a heavyweight with that combo of unending stamina, rock (pun intended) chin, and devestating power. As clumsy as he could be in terms of movement, he would have been an unbeatable figure in the modern light heavy/cruiserweight division

The closest thing Rocky Marciano ever came to defeat was against Joe Walcott. Rocky said that he thought Walcott was the greatest he'd ever seen when he fought him that night. Walcott was so smart and so skilled in their fight. He knocked Marciano down for the first time in this career, but when Rocky got up Walcott was smart enough and experienced enough to know that he had to settle in for the Long haul. And he did. He had Rocky wobbling on his feet in the 12th. The fight with Walcott, who moved pretty well, but was 40 years old, is why people say that Rocky wouldn't have had a single chance against Ali. If a 40 year old guy with a decent chin can give you that kind of beating, what would the prime Muhammad Ali do? Ali himself didn't know though, he said he would have had to run like hell and out point Rocky from distance. He recalls doing a computer fight with Rocky just playing around and getting bruises all over his arms.

Rocky was a legend, its a shame that none of the legendary fighters he fought were in their prime. Seeing him in the 60’s against the Sonny Liston’s, Joe Frazier’s and Muhammad Ali’s of the boxing game would be a real treat.

Sonny was no mean boxer and like all imaginary fights no-one knows how a fight with Marciano would have ended, no-one even knows how it would have went, all is speculation. Would Rocky have stopped Liston...or vice versa? Would Liston have quit as he did against Ali? Would Rocky have been stopped on cuts as he so nearly was against Charles? Nobody knows...can ever know...because they never fought and cannot now. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but opinions are not facts. Just like it's not Rocky's fault that he fought and beat older boxers who were past their primes and the fact that his Boxing Manager ducked the #1 ranked heavyweight contender in 1953 & 1954, Nino Valdes, who was a real heavyweight boxer who was 6'3" tall at 212lb, Bob Baker who was ranked #2 in 1954 and he was 6'2" at 205lb and Tommy Jackson who was ranked 3rd in 1954 and #1 in 1955 at 6'1" at 205lb. The only real heavyweight boxer that was ranked in the top 10 by ring magazine that Marciano beat was a washed up Joe Louis in 1951. Cus D'Amato, Patterson's manager ducked Liston for 4 years, from 1958-1962, and it wasn't until later in 1962 that Patterson dropped Cus as his manager that he agreed to fight Liston for the Title. So, in actuality Rocky retired in 1956 and Liston was a ranked fighter in 1958, so Rocky could've easily come out of retirement to fight Liston, in 1958, (2 years after retirement). Marciano had the smallest hands & shortest reach of any heavyweight champion, while Liston had the biggest hands at 15.5" and one of the longest reaches at 84", while Rocky's hands were 11.75" and his reach was 67". I'll leave it to John McGlothlin, a Boxing Fan from Quora to describe what would happen if a prime & healthy Liston fought a prime & healthy Marciano.

No. As the great coach Jimmy Johnson said, "People have this image in their heads that football, boxing etc is for tough guys. Bullshit. I rewards people who are in excellent physical condition. Cause late in the game, in the 4th quarter, when everyone is sucking wind, they look over at you and your healthy as a horse, they get intimidated. They don't want to go full steam that next play. Floyd Mayweather could run 10 miles everyday and not even feel winded. Manny Paquiauo was known to spend 6-8 hours a day in the gym training continuously. Conditioning folks. It's what makes great men into gods. Rocky was a beast because his nervous system was a well oiled machine because of conditioning.

A lot of ppl bring up Rockys competition saying it was easier in his day, but this is mistaken. Rocky fought some real quality. La Starza was 53-3 when they fought! Don Cockell was 66-11, and British Champ. Archie Moore was in his prime having just won the Lightheavyweight title and holding it for 10 years, having cleared out the Heavyweight division to fight Rocky. A terrific Heavyweight record. One of the best boxers ever. Went on a major winning streak after getting pounded within an inch of his life by Marciano. Archie even gets another Heavyweight title shot when Marciano retires. Moore fought nearly 200 fights in his career and lost only 23 of them. 143 knockouts. Jersey Joe Walcott was in the prime of his life, ranked 16th best Heavyweight ever by International Boxing Research Organization. Ranked No. 10 by Boxrec. A guy who had cleared out the entire Heavyweight division to win the Championship. A real legend of the ring. A man who probably should have beaten Joe Louis when Louis was still Champ, but was robbed by a poor judging decision when most (including Louis) thought Walcott had won. And then Ezzard Charles, a little past his prime perhaps when he fought Rocky but both men were similar age and Charles is excellent in their first fight. Charles is ranked 17th ever by International Boxing Research Organization. He is still winning and beating quality fighters to earn another title opportunity. Far from washed up.
This isn't poor or mediocre competition. It's solid competition and Rocky could have lost any of these fights against these quality athletes. He beat them all. He beat them up badly, most of them never recovered and their careers went into meltdown after fighting him.
49-0, with 43 knockouts against this kind of opposition is absolutely incredible and will never ever be repeated. That Rocky stood out head and shoulders above everyone else in this era, including these excellent boxers, should demonstrate just how special he was.

Rocky ran at least 5 miles a day, 365, with several pounds of sand built into each leather combat boot designed by a local shoe mogul. When a fight was signed he'd run 8 to 10 miles, and usually the last week up it to 12 miles. He said, "if you train like i do, your legs will carry you 40 rounds." Rocky would also include running uphill forward, downhill backwards, repeat. I remember reading that quote several decades ago. Then out of nowhere i recently stumbled across an isolated vid and Rocky said, "this is where the road work pays off. If your up at the bust of dawn everyday while your training, running up and down hill, your legs will carry you 40 rounds." On top of that Rocky liked to walk another 5 to 10 miles in the late afternoon or evening. And he did all this in the hilly country around Grossinger's, where he trained. It was Rocky's obsession with conditioning that kept him training 365 days a year and this dedication gave him stamina never seen before in a fighter. It allowed him to set a blistering pace that no opponent could match.

Ive been watching boxing my whole life and it amazes me how this guy never ever doubted himself..his willpower was unreal..I really believe he actually thought he could not be beaten. One thing is for certain, he was one of if not the best conditioned heavyweight boxers I have ever seen. In the second Charles fight he threw over 100 punches in the last round and that was the days of 15 round fights..imagine that..in the 15th round, not only throwing 100 punches but most if not all of them with as much power as he could muster.Marciano had the worst accuracy of any heavyweight, and in my opinion I believe that is why he didnt ko guys earlier than he did, but when he did connect to the jaw, they went.

Man, the end of this made me emotional. Of course I know of Rocky Marciano and all his great fights, but to see all this footage is something else. The man was an absolute force of nature. Not the most skilled or the most finessed, but I definitely believe he was the most determined and dangerous heavyweight of all time. When Muhammad Ali himself mentions being sure that Marciano would have given him issues, that's a testament to what a danger he was to anyone who stepped in the ring with him.

it was his stamina that was unmatched . he had a baseball bat for arms and a heart that would not quit. only turned pro at 25 for smucks sake. he done something right in the boxing realms .
He never ran out of stamina and that's another thing that made him terrifying. Someone summed it up perfectly with "Imagine this guy just won't stop coming for you. His punches feel like a sledgehammer and he never tires and so you don't don't have the hope that he will tire eventually. Even if you keep knocking him around, he refuses to throw the fight under any circumstance, even if his nose is almost knocked off. Even if you knock him down here and there, it isn't a guaranteed victory cause he knocked out Charles at Round 13 when he was down on the score cards. This guy was the definition of "Just throw the damn towel and live to fight another day". That's what made him so fascinating

The man just got the world's best record of any Heavyweight. The 4th best KO per fight ratio. He knocked down every opponent, even the 6 that didn't went out by KO. He's considered top5 cardio and conditioning boxer of all time. And was elected by the best boxers and coaches the 14th best puncher in a 100 top punchers list of all time. Often you'll here people say that he never fought anyone in their prime. Well I would just like to say that Rocky was 25 when he got into boxing and was 29yrs old when he fought Jersey Joe Wolcott for the heavyweight title. So he wasn't exactly in his prime either. I would also like to point out that his 49-0 record with 43kos was done in a 7yr period. Do the math and that's 7 fights per year. THAT'S INSANE!!! And would just like to add that I think the unfortunate thing for Marciano is that he was born either 10yrs to early or 10yrs to late. I mean if he was born 10yrs earlier and fought a prime Joe Louis and won what could you say. Where as born 10yrs later and fought a prime Muhammad Ali again what could you say. I'm not saying that he would have won, but im not saying he wouldn't have.I don't care what anyone says, Marciano had qualities that just can't be taught

If Ali had faced Rocky in a 15 round fight I think he would have out pointed him. If it had been an open ended fight like in the real olden days where the fight didn't stop until one fighter drops or quits, then Rocky would have ground him into dust. Same with Frazier imo. In each of the 3 fights vs Ali, both fighters were destroyed but it was Joe that clearly had the will to go another 15 rounds if the need arose.

In both cases, Ali would have succumbed if the bout was allowed to continue indefinitely. However, Joe would have reached that point sooner because he was naturally a better boxer. I think a more interesting bout would have been Rocky vs Joe and honestly I think that one is harder to pick. Either way, Joe is probably my favorite all time boxer although both Patterson and Foreman hold a special place in my heart. Patterson for his gutsy he is and Foreman because he really did achieve a level of humility that we can all learn from.

And because he knew a bit about boxing, he agrees with you about Rocky being in the top five.
Muhammad Ali was another top 5 tough guy. Ain't nobody taking the kind of punishment he took in his later years.
Another top five tough guy I would put up there for taking hits was George Foreman. People underestimate his chin. He was only knocked out one time, and that was because he was exhausted and spent all his punches and energy against Muhammad Ali. Ali did knock him out on power, just wore him out cuz he was being stupid.
Take a look at the Foreman versus holyfield fight. I don't know how Foreman took all that. And Ron Lyle against George Foreman. That was like watching two lumberjacks axe each other down! That was a man's fight!

Rocky retired when I was a boy. He was adored by my dad & 2 oldest brothers. I love watching his films & learning about him. He was not a technically superior boxer. We respected the fact that he worked harder than all of his opponents, was highly courageous & determined to win, took a hell of a punch, was quite small 4 a heavyweight & a nice man. .. After I saw the film of him beating Joe Louis, realized how very old Mr. Louis was, that Rocky had to fight him to get a title shot, how Mr. Louis' manager took advantage of him, our government pressured him for taxes his manager should have ensured he paid from Joe's earnings & knowing that Mr. Louis was a national hero who served our country & gave US hope when he defeated Schmelling, I decided I would never again watch Rocky beating Louis. It is a bit sickening for me to see. If both were in their prime & if Mr. Louis' trainers would have properly trained him to fight Rocky, either 1 could have won.
A real legend in the making with how he built himself. It really shows that his determination and commitment to what he sought after in himself is what helped him excel to his utter greatness. Rocky Marciano, a true boxing legend

I think you did a great job on this video. I've always respected Marciano's power. Plus, the only thing I've ever seen in most videos of him against Walcott was the tremendous KO. Never seen anyone so KOd as Walcott. I thought he'd killed him. But this video taught me a lot about Rocky. My goodness, he was a Tasmanian Devil in the ring. Just endless punching. His stamina reminds me of Roberto Duran at his peak. His swarming, bobbing, and weaving, remind me of a combination of Joe Frazier, and Mike Tyson. No wonder he never lost......
Any other fans ever wonder if the legendary old fighters (Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, etc etc) were "built different" mentally and physically due to the times they lived in? Most boxers today seem like athletes to me. These old era fighters seem to be tough as nails and so used to being uncomfortable and just wanting to "go to war". I understand that the boxers of today are 2x the size of these old fighters, but boxing in the great depression era?! (I understand Louis v. Marciano was in '51) Just living day to day back then was absolute HELL. Especially for fighters growing up in the neighborhoods and conditions they did.. Tough times = tough people....apparently. Thankful we as fans have these fights recorded

Never been nor ever will be a heavyweight with that combo of unending stamina, rock (pun intended) chin, and devestating power. As clumsy as he could be in terms of movement, he would have been an unbeatable figure in the modern light heavy/cruiserweight division

The closest thing Rocky Marciano ever came to defeat was against Joe Walcott. Rocky said that he thought Walcott was the greatest he'd ever seen when he fought him that night.
Walcott was so smart and so skilled in their fight. He knocked Marciano down for the first time in this career, but when Rocky got up Walcott was smart enough and experienced enough to know that he had to settle in for the Long haul. And he did. He had Rocky wobbling on his feet in the 12th. The fight with Walcott, who moved pretty well, but was 40 years old, is why people say that Rocky wouldn't have had a single chance against Ali. If a 40 year old guy with a decent chin can give you that kind of beating, what would the prime Muhammad Ali do?
Ali himself didn't know though, he said he would have had to run like hell and out point Rocky from distance. He recalls doing a computer fight with Rocky just playing around and getting bruises all over his arms.

I’m still asking why Rocky Marciano the Ledgend didn’t fight Randy Turpin who had just beat Don Cockell. Don Cockell was slow and out of shape and a ten to one underdog who lasted nine rounds giving Marciano all he could handle until Cockell ran out of gas. It would have been a contest if Cockell wasn’t already on his way out of the fight game and only had a few fights left in him with mediocre lower level opponents.

Rocky was a legend, its a shame that none of the legendary fighters he fought were in their prime. Seeing him in the 60’s against the Sonny Liston’s, Joe Frazier’s and Muhammad Ali’s of the boxing game would be a real treat.

no-brainer that Sonny was not only much bigger than Rocky, but he was much stronger than Marciano as well. Just like it's not Rocky's fault that he fought and beat older boxers who were past their primes and the fact that his Boxing Manager ducked the #1 ranked heavyweight contender in 1953 & 1954, Nino Valdes, who was a real heavyweight boxer who was 6'3" tall at 212lb, Bob Baker who was ranked #2 in 1954 and he was 6'2" at 205lb and Tommy Jackson who was ranked 3rd in 1954 and #1 in 1955 at 6'1" at 205lb. The only real heavyweight boxer that was ranked in the top 10 by ring magazine that Marciano beat was a washed up Joe Louis in 1951.
Cus D'Amato, Patterson's manager ducked Liston for 4 years, from 1958-1962, and it wasn't until later in 1962 that Patterson dropped Cus as his manager that he agreed to fight Liston for the Title. So, in actuality Rocky retired in 1956 and Liston was a ranked fighter in 1958, so Rocky could've easily come out of retirement to fight Liston, in 1958, (2 years after retirement). Marciano had the smallest hands & shortest reach of any heavyweight champion, while Liston had the biggest hands at 15.5" and one of the longest reaches at 84", while Rocky's hands were 11.75" and his reach was 67". I'll leave it to John McGlothlin, a Boxing Fan from Quora to describe what would happen if a prime & healthy Liston fought a prime & healthy Marciano.

I have to laugh to myself when I hear people commenting on how tough Rocky was. No. As the great coach Jimmy Johnson said, "People have this image in their heads that football, boxing etc is for tough guys. Bullshit. I rewards people who are in excellent physical condition. Cause late in the game, in the 4th quarter, when everyone is sucking wind, they look over at you and your healthy as a horse, they get intimidated. They don't want to go full steam that next play. Why? Because fatigue makes a coward out of you. You can't deal with the strain on your body. Your nervous system. You tap out. Your will to win won't be as strong. But when you're conditioned, you're ready and willing to go any lengths to win. Fatigue will make a coward out of you."
Rocky Marciano wasn't physically gifted. No reach. Limited footwork. But his secret weapon was to be well conditioned. Him, along with Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, early Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis were all perhaps the most well conditioned heavyweight champions of all time. Muhammad Ali never counted reps until they started hurting. Mike Tyson would wake up at 3 am and run 5 miles every morning, regardless if he was in training camp or not. Floyd Mayweather could run 10 miles everyday and not even feel winded. Manny Paquiauo was known to spend 6-8 hours a day in the gym training continuously. Conditioning folks. It's what makes great men into gods. Rocky was a beast because his nervous system was a well oiled machine because of conditioning.
