He didn't even win a world title
@@phylicia595 He might have not won a title, but that doesn't take away the fact that he clashed with a lot of future champion fighters who were still beasts at the time and was able to give them a run for their money. He wasn't afraid to take the hard fights and was fine fighting guys way bigger than himself.

I worked security at a bar with a Samoan guy named Xavier. I will never forget the night he called out over the radio to help remove a group of 6 drunken GI’s grabbing and harrassing some girls. By the time the rest of us showed up, the 6 dudes were facedown in the parking lot, bleeding into a puddle. And Xav was just standing there with his hands up and said “I tried to be diplomatic, but my shift is almost over” 😂

If you have to watch only one fight of Tua's career, it's gotta be the Ibeabuchi one. It shattered the record for a reason: insane work rate from two highly skilled heavyweights with no quit in them. The skill shown by those two guys that night eclipses the skill in most of today's crop of HWs...
SOOOO very true!!!!
That’s the closest thing to two silverbacks fighting. Imagine if a ref had to step in between the two😂😂

Cheeehooo 🇦🇸🇼🇸 appreciate the love for one of Samoa’s best sons!! If we weren’t so dominant at football I think more of us would be in the Heavyweight division. Courage and physicality is what we do!
I used to work with a guy that was immense and strong as all get out that wanted to spar with me, because he did kickboxing on the side. I'm almost a full foot shorter than him and about 150 lbs lighter, too. I am not afraid to admit I ducked that guy, the things I've heard about Samoan gyms and the way they spar was enough for me to say no. Don't get me wrong at all, I liked the guy, he was a great workplace friend that unfortunately I fell out of contact with, but I don't think he realized he was a giant asking me (I'm 5'10") to step into a ring with him.
Lol no
Samoans would make terrible heavyweights because they lack speed.
Football has no weight class. You're a fat guy knocking down a small running back
@@iibrushstroke samoans are terrible boxers. I've seen the amateur divisions in their lands. They're only strong against smaller running backs in football. Not when the sizes are equal
@@phylicia595 lol you’re full of shit. There are hardly any resources to support a quality gym in either Samoa so idk what amateur division you were watching “in their lands”. Tua v Tyson in 2000 is the fight I wished would have happened
Never seen anyone hurt Tua. He took a Lennox uppercut and wasn’t phased at all.
I would’ve picked Tua over Tyson.
@@jakemorrison548 In 2000 maybe. In Tyson's prime he was every bit as strong and hard-hitting as Tua but with double the speed. Tyson at 19-20 would have crushed Tua
@@echolalia682 I'm going to get this out of the way up front, Mike Tyson hit hard. That being said, it wasn't really his power that was amazing, there have been tons of guys that hit harder than him (including Tua), it was his speed and accuracy that made him scary. As is often said, it is the punches you don't see that do the most damage and Tyson was as good as it gets at making sure the other guy didn't see it coming.
@@iibrushstroke Holyfield said Tua and Foreman hit harder than Tyson. Holyfield brought Tua into his camp to help him prepare for I believe Tyson, Tua knocked Holyfield down. That’s when Holyfield said that he’ll never fight Tua.
@@jakemorrison548 Oh, I am aware and Holyfield is a friend of Tyson's. Meaning he wasn't saying it out of spite. I would like to reiterate here (because I know Tyson fans can get pretty heated about this topic) Tyson absolutely hit hard, much harder than a guy his size should have been able to punch. That said, does anyone realistically think that somebody like Earnie Shavers didn't hit harder than Tyson? Tyson deserves heaps of praise and recognition for how incredible he was in the ring, but some people need to understand that just because he was amazing doesn't mean he has to be the best in every category.
Quite amazing how resilient Ruiz became after getting KTFO like that.
I really appreciate those first 2 minutes or so
I used to train with David Izonritei's brother, Roger Izonritei who was also a great boxer and one thing that made them such good fighters were the hardships they went through. They came from the streets of Nigeria and had to fight to live. The reason why he was so clear headed fighting Tua was because he had zero fear of pain and or the loss. When I trained with Roger, he was so focused on my inner thoughts and the way I even looked at life. He was like a life coach who so happened to train me in boxing. All I can say is Roger was like a lion, felt crazy to train with the way he roars at you with such a powerful voice. So hope that give a little insight to why David did quite well to Tua. Tua is an absolute legend.

David Tua and his career is a giant enigma in boxing history!
David Tua knocked-out John Ruiz, Oleg Maskaev and defeated Hasim Rahman (both ended controversial)....and yet all three men became later on in respective career
recognized world heavyweight champions, with both Ruiz & Rahman twice - with-out Tua never managed to win a world heavyweight title.
Tua was a world-wide fan-favourite heavyweight boxer In his entire career, yet David Tua only ONCE fought for the world heavyweight title = Lost a wide UD to Lennox Lewis.
From 2001-2003 Tua could EASILY have gotten another shot or even two based on his popularity alone. But Tua was a major decliner of fights.
And between March 29 2003 to March 2005 = 2 YEARS of abcense, Tua returns to the ring but struggle to be the man he was just 2 years shy back.
Meenwhile in the same time span, Jameel McCline fights 4 times for a world heavyweight title, Fres Oquendo and Kirk Johnson 2 times each - and all three was push-overs compared to the calibre of what Tua offered. Tua declined a rematch with John Ruiz when he was the WBA world champion between 2001-2003 and also declined a 3rd match with Hasim Rahman. Tua also declined fighting both the Klitschko brothers.
Tua's career lands in the file of "what could have been" or "what if ?"
He will always be in our hearts
