I took my wheelchair bound brother to a book signing in Oxford where Ali was promoting his book, he was in a bad way at the time - they both were! My brother had no idea what he was there for. even though he was suffering, Ali stood up and shook my brother’s hand and gave him his book, such a beautiful memory of two beautiful people.

I was 26 years-old, and I'll never forget this fight, or any of Ali's fights. He loved talking trash because he knew it would draw crowds of people wanting to see him get beat. Ali was probably the best thing to ever happen to boxing, and he helped save it because it really was dying. Man, Ali and his mouth injected new life into the sport like you'd never know unless you were there. Ali was also the greatest showman boxing has ever had or will have. He was a gentleman out of the ring, and performed many good deeds he didn't want known. For example, he heard on the news that a nursing home had burned down and people had no place to go. He told his manager to send them a check to build a new home for them, but he didn't want the public to know about it.

I just can't imagine any other boxer going as many rounds as ali... he was a machine, and I can't avoid the comments he spoke of not following his own personal strength in his religion as a reason he didn't win on the times he wasn't victorious. Never heard excuses only I didn't do my part as a boxer and that's what makes him so great to me.

But I was always a Fan of his Boxing !
Even listening to one of his Fights broadcast on AM radio, back in the day !
Then listening to Muhammad Ali express his knowledge of Islam, I gained great respect for him, as it became clear, he was not hiding, but really embraced it, and was very knowledgeable !
And here was a Man, likely knowing full well the dangers of the Sport, still chose to continue, essentially sacrificing himself, not only for the money, but to entertain, wherever, or whatever he was doing !

Anybody alive at the time knows it. Clay became a Muslim in 1961 and changed his name in 1964. He wasn't drafted until 1966 and called up in 1967. That's when he was convicted. Ali claimed he qualified for conscientious-objector status because he opposed the war as a black Muslim. Ali said “my conscience won’t let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America,” he said. “And shoot them for what? They never called me [the N word], they never lynched me, they didn’t put no dogs on me, they didn’t rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father…. Shoot them for what? How can I shoot them poor people? Just take me to jail.” The Supreme Court reversed his conviction 1971 after reading Elijah Muhammad’s Message to the Blackman in America. Most of America hated our involvement in Vietnam and it became the first and only war the US ever lost, so far. Ali wasn't allowed a boxing license for 3 years of his fighting prime to a conviction that was eventually overturned.
