There's something about your films. The sweeping vistas, the single long wide shot. Letting the story breathe. The quietness and the simplicity. The framing of your shots is superb. All the best in your efforts.

I come from Connecticut, USA, and am absolutely in love with these mountains! The history, a totally different way of life almost forgotten; I was amazed at the way people used to live up there, and how many abandoned villages and homes! And the way they built them...! I think it's awesome that so many are coming back to renovate and bring them back to life. I also think it's pretty significant that so many are looking for peace and solitude today, and this is the perfect place to find it!

The beauty is breathtaking. I too live quite isolated in the country in New Zealand. Nearly 40 years now. It’s a lovely old wooden church which added to very carefully. Views to the mountains and used to be down to the sea but hedges have grown so no sea views now. We came from a busy city with traffic day and night. My husband commuted for years. I was a travel writer and walked for an hour every morning just breathing the fresh air and thinking. Walking up a beautiful mountain and reaching a little lake. Life goes so fast. I am 80 now and can’t walk and my husband recently died. Most people can’t understand why I stay but I get necessary help. Would rather die than go into a retirement home. I love my life and the wonderful past.

Very intelligent approach to a seemingly overwhelming project. Having a comfortable refuge (temporary cabin within a cabin) is absolutely essential for keeping morale and attitude positive when problems occur. Your preparation will make things much more manageable and keep you in focus for the tasks ahead. I know, this sounds like a very long fortune cookie. Very inspirational narratives as well. I obviously enjoy all aspects of this epic undertaking.

But I do fear for your hands - if you put a simple stop on top of your work table, you could avoid aiming tools like chisels and circular saws at/near your hands. I saw you pushing the chisel towards your hand and remembered doing that same thing once, and slipping. The tool jammed into my hand and blood was gushing everywhere while I took a trip to get medical attention. You always think it won't happen to you, until it does. It's always the last time you do it - take it from me. How far down the mountain is your closest medical attention? At the very least, do you have a first aid kit, so Johannes could stitch you up? We who mention safety care that you stay healthy, so you can continue your mountain adventure! Best wishes to you.

Hello Martijn!.... Going back to some of your earlier videos, I had it wrong when the Italian Environmental and historic sites people got involved. I assumed it was totally about preservation and Aesthetics; which is admirable. There's always some ding-a-ling who might tear down part of the building and use it for a rock garden.
You have shown us that special permits and inspections also have a great deal to do with safety, which is even more admirable. That was when the videos pointed out that this is a region prone to strong earthquakes. So, if people start adding doors and windows in the wrong places, like too close to the corners, the building might collapse when the earth trembles.
I was reminded of this in this video, when the morning sun was on one of the outside walls where you set up your little outdoor kitchen. It could clearly be seen that the stones have been stacked in the strongest possible way. Your walls still stand strong and straight while others in the region have come tumbling down, as you showed on one of the tours.
While building for strength, the craftsmen who put these walls together also created a work of art. Their skills were drawing upon the experience of about 7000 years of trial and error. Since the discovery of the Ice Man, and the dating of his remains, we now know that is at least how long people have been living in that region. ( the autopsy also revealed that it was to seek copper ore that brought people up into these mountainsides,)
Let us hope this type of stone work never becomes a lost art. It looks as though the right person came along to help preserve it

This is amazing, found it three days ago and am addicted: incredibly exciting to watch, as I have just bought 10 acres in the hills of Mangamahu, between Whanganui and Ruapehu in NZ Aotearoa: it's a total adventure and so much work to do: there is a very well built garage / home there which still requires interior lining to be installed (all there on site when I purchased) and no power or water. but a tank and spouting there to be installed: no one I know is doing anything like this: and then I find your incredible channel Martijn and your love of nature and the changing seasons and moments in the day: thank you: I am an architect and love watching you build and the steps you take to make decisions and do it. Love the internal cabin in the cottage! look forward to my addiction continuing

A cool fact about these houses such as the one you live In is the reason the stable is typically found beneath the house is due to the need for warmth during winter, the manure from the animals warmed the house up. This something which my Nonni did when they built their house years ago.

This was quite common for small homesteaders in my country too. My great grandparents lived like that to begin with. My grandmother and the whole family spent the summers cutting hay by hand, loading it up on a horse-drawn carriage and bringing it to the barn. The sheep lived in the basement of the house. The horse and the cow lived in the barn.

@@paulm.6437 yes - my ancestors immigrated from this region where Martijn's property is. Some Waldensians stayed but as the years progressed it became more & more difficult financially for any to stay. The reason i'm subscribed to Martijn's channel is for this exact purpose: to see the homeland they loved. No other videgrapher has done such a fantastic job of filming the area for me to visit it virtually. i'm indebted to Martijn for sharing his current life with us.

@@Survivin2Thrivin I read The History of the Waldenses, who were forced out or killed in the Crusades sent by the Church of Rome. There was a massacre in that town in the valley below where he lives, that I read about the Waldenses, online, by Wylie.. so, I too, feel a sense of closure, being able to imagine living on those eastern slopes of the Italian Alps. Someday, I hope to travel through Switzerland, and into Italy, as I was shown in a dream.

Your comment about the sound really chimed with me - even now when I drive back to deep West Wales and step out of the car at my father's house, the silence is almost overwhelming. Then as you were saying, you start to pick out the sounds - wildlife, livestock in the fields and the river at the bottom of the valley.
