For many years I have been building timber frames and restoring antique homes from as early as the late 1600s. I haven’t worked on any all stone homes, but have worked with some amazing stone masons. My call is the wood is not charred, but simply weathered. It looks a lot like red cedar would weather. Where the rains and moisture touch it, it will become quite black, but weather more gray where only the sun hits it, like under the eaves. I have always loved how both red and white cedar, and even pine weather to a beautiful gray, and with red cedar especially, to black. Don’t know if there’s a type of red cedar there but that’s what it looks like to me. Thanks for the great vids, I watch them all! Peace

I had a scientist explain to me that the greying of the timber was caused by a mould. I had always thought that it was just the sun bleaching the timber. It's a very slow process but I love the rusticated look of aged timber.
I too look forward each week to your latest video, thanks Martijn. We're in New Zealand and my wife's relations are in the Netherlands so we visit Europe every few years to catch up with them and travel around as much as we can. While we have been to Italy, it is long overdue that we go there again, so in the next couple of years we look forward to going to the region. It has so much appeal! Mind you, we too have such breathtaking areas in our mountains but instead of wolves we have Kea, which are a native parrot, very intelligent and mischievous, and they literally eat the rubber off your windscreens, chew off mirrors from your car, etc if you park for too long to admire the scenery.

To protect the roof temporarily, you can use a tarpaulin from a truck or army .
Many houses have them on for many years.
A roof made of chestnut wood is mostly far over 100 years old at the time it looks like yours...they take their time to crumble down 😂
If you want to learn the skill of rebuilding a rustic roof, just watch the old roof and rebuild it the same way.
I had the space underneath the roof,to build a second ,additional roof truss right underneath the original one.
A roof like this is the hardest work of all,but I wanted the lumber of the new Tross to be visible, plus gaining space for the insulation.
The roof was the only part of the house I insulated.
BTW, The skill of roofmaking, including putting up the stones again, can be learned from companies in the valleys .
The best artisans in our area are all from Valle vigezzo ,Piemonte.
Take a week to go watch them.you see everything you need to know from a-z.
I took down all the stones, washed them, formatted some of them new with a diamond saw,and drilled one or two holes in each,to tie them to the new framework with wire or screws/nails.
Your stones would be perfect to put back up,due to their size.
You’d finish a bit faster than me 😂
Good luck and enjoy your project

    • @rudolfboukal1538
      @rudolfboukal1538 2 роки тому

@@SisterShirley Hello. I have some extra time today, so I'll make this a little lengthy. tAfter my children finished college, they happily moved on and out. I decided to take a long-needed break. Originally I was going to go to areas in Canada, but at the last minute I decided to just go "west." I had never been to this part of the country, and began to explore it (we always crossed the border above Minnesota to enter Canada). I informed clients that I would be gone about two months - it ended up being 4-1/2. (but all my commitments were complete - no one was waiting on me to return by a certain promised date). After leaving the Black Hills in SD, I spoke with a girl at the Sheridan Information Center to inquire "which way next." She said go to NW Montana, and stay off the highway - I did so. Within a week of being there (specifically Flathead Lake) - I just knew I needed to move. I spent the rest of that time investigating many towns and found the beautiful place in which I now live. I had already retired to half-time hours when I was still in Minnesota - and thought to continue that trend since was filling the rest of that time performing and composing music. For as long as anybody had known me, I did not enjoy living in a city, nor in the metropolitan area of MN. I grew up in the mountains in northern Germany (which is much like it is here) - and have always missed that environment in which to live .... and thrive. I have been here now a little over ten years (with regular trips to visit family). I am doing what I had hoped: living quietly in the beauty that surrounds me, creating and performing music, and spending significant time volunteering in the local arts programs, such as traveling to schools and teaching art to children. I live at the edge of a small town - which was my limit as i did not want to live off grid. I also did not want a house that needed work since I wanted to devote as much time as possible to creating music and writing. My journey is a little different that Martijn's, but the purpose is, I think, quite the same - to live quietly, purposefully, and absorb the abundance of goodness and beauty in life - where the distractions of "busyness" are removed. A little long, but I hope that answers what you were looking for. Of course, feel free to inquire more. Be well - Rudi

@@rudolfboukal1538 Rudi, I am happy you had extra time today to go into some detail on how you came to live in Montana, so thank you so much for that. One quick question and then I need to get back outdoors and tend to the vegetable garden. When you left Germany, did you move to Minnesota first, then onto Montana? OK, my break time is over.

@@SisterShirley When we first came to the US, we lived out side of Chicago. Until I was 18, we migrated back and forth between there and Germany (most summers, although not all - from about May to Oct were spent in Germany - we had a second house there and another in France). My parents ended up moving back permanently to Germany when I was 22. From age 14-18 I entered the seminary (catholic - private school) by my parents wishes, in southern Illinois. I stayed in seminary until I was about 25 - the time there healed much, I studied profusely, and set the pace of life that I pursued later on. I relocated to Minnesota when I entered college and then stayed for grad school - still in the seminary, I finally decided to leave - it was to be that "road not taken." It was a difficult transition. I had never known any other life apart from cloister and study - fairly naive socially. Having left, the big world around me was confusing and unknown. Since I knew nothing about the "outer" life, I decided to stay and live there where I was - I had no inclination to go elsewhere. Got married, divorced, raised three children on my own, ran a business, did my art - but was always waiting, searching ... unsettled .... Coming here ended that quest. I finally feel at home - it is the valley that I lost long ago. Just to clarify, I am close to my kids - and they are happy for me - I go there, they come here. It is a good life that has been long in coming.

The little luxuries we take for granted like how to to have frozen water pipes!. The neighbours dog was a good clue as he was foraging for scraps so likely this is attracting the wolf! It was good to see the rain test on the cabins and still I think how many years have these little cabins resisted being overtaken by nature. Lovely wee road trip at the end, a big difference in the houses and landscape in Switzerland!

I almost got shocked to observe and Romano's dog borne such a close resemblance to a real wolf! Just beautiful scenery. The Alps seem to be a wonderful place with such steep inclines. I live in the state of Colorado in the US and I am thinking the Rocky mountains are a much older mountain chain since they appear much more rounded. On your trip to Switzerland you talked about the mountain pass not being open yet, and I was reminded of Trailridge pass that doesn't open up until late spring. It crosses the continental divide from Estes Park to Granby, and is the highest elevation road in the continental US. Camping trips on the 4th of July were so much fun with snowball fights at the scenic overlooks at the top. There would always be snow remaining and it never failed as we kids would be running around in shorts and T shirts and pelting each other with snowballs. I love the high country in spring time.

William , loved that drive near Estes Park! In 1976 our family had a Reunion. We stayed at the Stanley Hotel - what a beautiful place. And the evening of July 31 it started raining actually pouring and family split up to have dinner at different places. The most elderly of the group decided to go down mountain to a restaurant- even pouring rain-none of us knew what was to come! The Big Thompson Flood! On their return the road had been closed so they had to take a longer route-they didn’t return til almost midnight and we were so happy that they were okay! Not knowing til morning of the horror of 144 people dying. The hotel became a staging area for helicopters and all sort of rescue people. Really changed the tone of our reunion. Thank you for triggering that memory- hadn’t thought of it in years. Wish I were 50 years younger! Would love to see the area where Martijn has his “project”!

@@suzannemoore4519 Our family all went fishing at Green Mountain reservoir that same weekend, and since we were up visiting for the weekend, we left Denver Sunday afternoon. It started to rain as we headed out of town on I76. That is wild how you remember exactly where you were, and what you were doing. I was so glad were not camping in the Big Thompson canyon that week. We turned on the news and saw all the damage and destruction it had caused, and all the people it had killed. We felt very fortunate to have escaped that flood. I was 13 years old that summer.

And I am impressed with your ability to meet these challenges with acceptance and patience for the way things happen to be (waiting for building permits, supplies, good weather, etc.) And on top off all that you create such beautiful videos to view and listen to.
