In August I decided to give up everything I owned and walked to Scotland all the way down from the south coast of England 3 months walking. I made it as far as Whitby in North Yorkshire, after visiting Wale's, London, Lincoln and Bath plus many more towns, it was an empowering moment in my life. And I'll make it to Scotland when I resume in March 2023
That sounds amazing! Would you mind delving a little bit deeper into your journey? You said you walked from the south coast to Whitby. Ofcourse I do not know your starting point. But if I look up the distance between Lands End (Wales) to Whitby it says roughly 440miles (708km). So 3 months walking would mean you walked 4.8miles (7.7km) a day. Withouth sounding disrespectful or snobbish...that sounds a bit low? Now I understand you didn't just walk in a straight line. You've mentioned visiting London, Lincoln and Bath. So I assume you walked along the south and then went up? When I plot that into Google Maps it comes out to roughly 527miles (848km). Which would mean 5.85miles (9.4km) a day. Now again, without sounding arrogant, disrespectful or snobbish...a healthy person can walk 10km in less then 2 hours. Furthermore Google Maps says that it would take 7 days to walk. Ofcourse that doesn't include sleeping, occasional stops/sightseeing and general resting. But still 7 days --> 3months is a huge difference. Again I'm asking because this is something I would LOVE to do! I'm just (annoyingly) curious about your method/choises!
I'm watching with my two kids aged 9 and 6, just amazing. We just sat in silence watching, totally enthralled, their minds opened to your amazing journey. Thanks so much.

Working since 17 and providing for my family for the last 30 years. I am tired, mentally! Thank you for sharing this, it has inspired me to get back on my bike.

No idea how I only discovered your biking videos now, after watching your stone cabins videos in the Alps for 3-6 months but what a life you have lived and created for yourself! Amazing, I am so inspired.
It is incredibly inspiring. When I was 24, I did set out on what was supposed to be a tour from my home town in the Netherlands all the way to Kyrgyzstan. I did not make it there - after reaching Helsinki I had enough, and simply took a ferry to St. Petersburg, then flew home. But I learned so much about myself. In my case, I learned that I actually really like the certainties of having a job and a fixed home. But that was really a discovery! Because for a long time I had been pondering on what it would be like to truly be off the grid for a long time. I'm 33 now and am fully settled with a family. But I know for sure that if I had not made that journey that I would always have been wondering the "what if". And now I know that, at least for me, ordinary family life with an ordinary job actually is the way. I still really like watching videos like this though. There is so much beautiful stuff out there on the road and it is great to be out there for a while.
This is, by far, the best bikepacking movie I'ever seen. Beautiful photography, storytelling, astonishing landscapes and so inspiring...Congratulations!

By far the best bikepacking production I've found up until now. Wonderful storytelling and stunning photography / cinematography. I just recently came back from a 6 week Bikepacking trip across Europe but this is on another level. Thank you for inspiring so many of us!
Always the bicyclists. Insanely powerful video on the bike. Your life is incredibly inspiring. The videos dig deep and share another way to experience our world. I rarely leave comments here on UA-cam, because usually everything is already said. This time is different because this video is a masterpiece. I didn’t want this video to end. You’re so good at storytelling, filming, editing and just keeping the viewer glued to the screen. Thank you for your inspiring stories and videos!
You cannot beat Martijn Doolaard for a beautiful, admirable, story. Both cycling chronicles are superior films, The books are keepsakes. Now I am readying for the next installment of how this amazing man develops an off-grid compound of stone cottages in the Italian Alps. Breathtaking scenery, exceptional workmanship.
ALOT of us cyclists who have been on a bike adventure like this, we all know the feeling. every single human should experience it. i love watching this because it reminds me of similar experiences, however I am shit at taking photos and video. You capture everything very beautifully with your camera work!! Fully loaded tours can a lot of work just in itself imo, but to do that PLUS take stunning footage, and your computer and stuff. man.. props to you. as we say in Japan. お疲れ様です!cheers mate
I love everything about your journey Martijn. Thank you for sharing this with the world. It made me think, there are many individuals like you who go through so much yet I'd never know about them because they were never filmed. You have the power of the camera and you've given us an experience to ponder about.
I am speechless with a tear. I'm so happy somebody got the guts to live one of my dreams and shared it with the world. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart!!!!!! ❤️
A quick recommendation: Get the book. A piece of art. Quality paper. Quality print. Quality story. You can tell there's been put a lot of work into it. First book I've read since... I actually never read the books in school.

The way you articulate the lack of control and overwhelming times riding through the desert is so spot on. Yet It revealed to you who you are in times of adversity. Cycling is beautiful that way.

OMG! Can hardly wait for week 2. You are living the life. Takes a lot of guts and hard work. Kudos to you. On top of all that to have the presence of mind to film and narrate. A sound mind in a sound body…way to go! Thanks for sharing.
The last windy night in the tent was like riding a luge! Your trek has made this native Californian remembering and better appreciating, and revisiting with you all the wonders I have seen over the years!
The only form of description I can think of for this video is: OMG!!! Man, starting with the way you tell your experience, the filming, music, the map details, everything! I am so jealous of your courage to get of the "cycle" of normal living. When you were describing your old city life routine... it mataches with everything I am living now and it is so frustrating that we spend 99% of our life not responding to our prime instincts: getting outside, working with our bare hands, with our body, connecting with nature. Please let me honor your thrive to do that, to do what the most of us don't find the courage for, and for sharing this amazing story and experience with all of us! Also, I am loving your videos on your new journey building your own off-grid house ;)
Absolutely awestruck ! May you spend those busy, hardworking, toiling yet peaceful and dreamy days and nights at your alpine home once it’s ready to live in too !! My hi to the priest - your neighbour … just fabulous Martijn 🙂

Just stopped the video at 1:30 seconds and ordered the signed copy. Like so many, I love your journey and look forward to more adventures. Thank you and be well.
That's a very simplistic take on a very complex theme. You need some kind of financial back up or a nest egg or something to fall back on when the journey is over. A lot of people struggle to make ends meet and can't take a year off to go travelling or cycling around the world regardless of how inspiring his life is, which it obvioulsy is.
@@redwhite_040 Easier said than done. Martijn is from the Netherlands, Dutch people have very high living standards compared to most other countries in the world. I'm not trying to be contrarian, but it's a fact that people from richer countries find it a lot easier to undertake these kinds of endeavours.
Can't wait for your journey docs. When you said "people are afraid to quit their comfy life" I gathered you are on your bike exploring somewhere in the world, right!👉🚲😅

Maybe not on this scale, for I don’t think I have your endurance, but something similar. I used to have plans of traveling through Europe on motorcycle, but that all fell flat for various reasons. I might do it, eventually. Thanks for being an inspiration!

23 here and been on a couple weeks-long trips, and many more weekend ventures. It's good to start small. We have plenty of time. Pick a destination close to where you live that makes you dream, so you have a clear goal. You don't need expensive gear, but you need to be well prepared, so make a lot of research. Grab a friend if you can. I set off for the first time at 20 and never regretted it.

This blew my mind. Quitting is just not in the person's psyche. A calm but beast of a man, truly amazing. The filming is fantastic too. 👏👏 Inspiringly jaw dropping beauty.
When I was in my 40's (many years ago) I was driving alone from the mountains in Colorado back east, pulling a small trailer full of heavy stuff. On the plains, on one of those roads that goes straight from horizon to horizon, totally flat everywhere you looked, I saw in my rear view mirror a huge thunderstorm coming towards me, going in the same direction as me. I was going 70 miles an hour and the storm overtook me in just two hours. It dumped apple sized hail on me for so long I couldn't see the front of my car. I pulled over and it shook my car violently for a long time. I thought my car and the equipment in the trailer were going to be really banged up, but once the storm was past me, I got out to look and everything was OK - no damage at all! I'm still convinced that if I hadn't been pulling such heavy stuff, I'd have been blown miles off the road end over end. Nature's a powerful thing, but if it's not your time, it's not your time... so I really relate to your experience in the desert.

I didn’t want this video to end. You’re so good at storytelling, filming, editing and just keeping the viewer glued to the screen. Thank you for your inspiring stories and videos!
I just finished reading the beautiful book, now I binged on this 4 episode bonus videos series... thanks Martijn :-)
My gf just gave me your book "one year on a bike" as a present. I cannot be happier!
The moment in the desert, after the S.Francisco stop, ohh maaaan...beautiful. What else can i say. Thank you for sharing
You have a gift for storytelling. Thank you for sharing the experience.
What a lovely setting - the wall, the table and particularly the door ... so so beautiful ... look forward to watching the video
I wonder it it is filmed in Amsterdam, cause those sure looked like Andreas crosses on the door.
It takes one strong willed person to get up and passionately follow their heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful rich life to all of us. Every video on your channel captures how life is supposed to be lived, fearless and free. You are an inspiration. ❤
Wow, just wow. Incredible experiences, what memories you must have. I’m loving watching and listening, thank you making the videos 🙏
The way you share your journey is amazing.Your calm and positive delivery is so soothing and I love that you don’t dwell on about how hard it is to cycle such long distances.
Fantastic narration, editing and photography. Great stuff! I've just retired at 60, ordered my dream bike and can't wait to hit the road.
I went travelling to Greece when I was younger in my early 20s
Im now 40 and married with 3 beautiful children but my little adventure from the UK 🇬🇧 to France 🇫🇷, Monaco 🇲🇨, Italy 🇮🇹 to Venice then 24 hours a long the Adriatic Sea past all of the old Yugoslavia to Greece 🇬🇷 and lived on my uncles catamaran for 2 weeks and worked on the boat and was one of the best times of my life and now I’m married to my beautiful wife and have the children one day I will do the trip again with my family and show them how good it was!
Respect to you Martijn for your adventures which led up to your cabin in the Italian alps
Peace ✌️
I had no clue you had taken on this kind of adventure. This sounds amazing. For sure want to see your premiere!!!
Thank you for taking the time to share this truly epic adventure with us. You did such a great job with everything. Can’t remember the last time I said “wow!” so many time while watching a documentary. You can see how doing something new everyday slows down time and allows you to be more present to the beauty that’s right in front of you. I can see why you said these were some of the happiest days of your life. Such an inspiration! I will remember this as I embark on my John Muir Trail adventure in about a month!
I am watching Martijn, you building ur off-grid house. And, absolutely loving that series.
I was thinking to myself what’s his bicycle trip all about. And, decided to take a look. Well my friend, I take my hat off to you.
This video is simply sensational. You are a superb story teller and a filmmaker.
Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! I just saw part one. What an incredible journey. Looking forward to watching the rest of the videos.
Thank you so much for sharing your life with us all!
I have no idea why these videos don’t have 10+million views. Beautiful product! Thanks for sharing your experience and helping push others to get out there and create an adventure.
Incredible Martijn, thank you for sharing with us.
As a photographer, cyclist, mountain lover, train runner etc this video ticked all my boxes! Love diy and building too which is how i found you first. keep up the great content!
I am so glad you have made such an adventure. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Finland
The way you articulate the lack of control and overwhelming times riding through the desert is so spot on. Yet
It revealed to you who you are in times of adversity. Cycling is beautiful that way.
Amazing 😀 Loving your latest project…. Looking forward to #8 😀
One of, if not THE best & certainly most inspiring road trip films i've seen. You clearly put a ridiculous amount of effort into so many facets of this journey - & that period of your life! You deserve many things, well done Martijn, truly awesome!
This is amazing. I've lived in the western United States all my life and I enjoyed seeing it through your eyes. All familiar places. Looking forward to the next installment. Thank you
Wow. What a adventure. The scenery is beautiful. Then the wild winds. Unreal. Very brave to go and do what you did. Brilliant 👏👏👏
By far the best bikepacking documentary I ever seen. Great focus!!!! So inspiring.
OMG! Can hardly wait for week 2. You are living the life. Takes a lot of guts and hard work. Kudos to you. On top of all that to have the presence of mind to film and narrate. A sound mind in a sound body…way to go! Thanks for sharing.
Super entertaining Martijin, you are a modern day explorer/adventurer who is willing to put it all out there. You have me utmost admiration.
So well said. What an amazing life you are living! Breaking the “cycle” to cycle, just inspiring!
Absolutely awestruck ! May you spend those busy, hardworking, toiling yet peaceful and dreamy days and nights at your alpine home once it’s ready to live in too !! My hi to the priest - your neighbour … just fabulous Martijn 🙂
I'm missing the road and the city and the routine makes me sad. I need a new adventure. I also spent 7 years traveling, 2 years on the bike. Thank you for your words, I can relate to them too. I am from Brazil. and I've been to 17 countries
Mesmerizing... to say the least! What a great story teller you are. Thank you!
Awesome! Memories of my three favorite bike trips; 1) across France while in college, 2) across Alaska, and 3) biking across Canada. Met so many amazing people and many unforgettable experiences. Cheers-
Really easy to listen to. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences.
Just stopped the video at 1:30 seconds and ordered the signed copy. Like so many, I love your journey and look forward to more adventures.
Thank you and be well.
You live the life most people only dream about because they are afraid to quit their comfy life. Really inspiring !
@@duhusker4383 Thats why you should do it before you rent or buy a house and have a family.
@@redwhite_040 Easier said than done. Martijn is from the Netherlands, Dutch people have very high living standards compared to most other countries in the world. I'm not trying to be contrarian, but it's a fact that people from richer countries find it a lot easier to undertake these kinds of endeavours.
@@duhusker4383 Yup, such a pissant insult 'afraid'. Scrape the surface of these 'adventurers' even a little and their 'risk' is actually negligible.
Can't wait for your journey docs. When you said "people are afraid to quit their comfy life" I gathered you are on your bike exploring somewhere in the world, right!👉🚲😅
I appreciate having the opportunity to view your story and for bringing such an interesting scope on your life’s journey
Omg this is so underrated, from the sound design to storyline. I can only hope to lead one third of your amazing life journey. It has always been my dream to do one of these but it looks so scary. More please ❤️ From Malaysia 🇲🇾
I was expecting some house renovation and then this amazing content happens :)
I agree.. but being born as a woman makes me get so much trouble traveling alone. Not safe even in my own neighbourhood
beautiful book. nice to see video and more pics this way..
@@marialim2273 just do it anyway. Never let fears interfere with your dreams. I travelled alone so often in my life and am still bushcrafting alone. Don't worry too much, live :-)
I've been wanting to do this as well. I am going to do this once I have no more fam left my mom she passed Dec 5 of 2021. I love you n currently taking care of my grandpa who is 89 cycling to work doing what I can to make sure he's happy.n taking care of. But this is something I always wanted to do and will be doing. Going to start n Georgia anyones welcome if ya wanna join or just chat about this type of journey. Anyways peace b safe.
Thank you for sharing your amazing journeys. Many people like me would surely do what you’re doing only if we are really “free”. You are very fortunate to be able to do what you love to do.
MD-This is very nice. Calm, comfortable beautiful and your photos are stunning. Peace, SO
I just love those four videos. Best of their kind I have seen, watching them again now. Hope to see more of your work in the future.
There’s a reason why the Church Fathers went to the desert….
What an amazing adventure, and what a beautiful couple of books you produce. These are state of the art documents; I will be looking for them. Congratulations, man. I don’t remember how I found your channel (Probably came on my feed), but I love your content and the things you do. Looking at this video makes me want to do something like this. Maybe not on this scale, for I don’t think I have your endurance, but something similar. I used to have plans of traveling through Europe on motorcycle, but that all fell flat for various reasons. I might do it, eventually.
Thanks for being an inspiration!
Just as I thought you absolutely rock for the little mountain house vids now I find you also rock on a bike wild camping - what a legend, Loving your whole vibe - Great work Thankyou!
This is so insane. The quality of the pictures and storytelling and everything. I am only 19 but i am sure that i want to start such a tour too later in my life. Thank you
I’m 19 to bro, I want to do this edventually
23 here and been on a couple weeks-long trips, and many more weekend ventures. It's good to start small. We have plenty of time. Pick a destination close to where you live that makes you dream, so you have a clear goal. You don't need expensive gear, but you need to be well prepared, so make a lot of research. Grab a friend if you can. I set off for the first time at 20 and never regretted it.
A Masterpiece of story-telling! Thanks for taking me with you on such an unforgettable journey!
Impressive journey plus beautifully produced video, looking fwd to the further parts! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Just wow! What a place to stop the episode. There goes the rest if my evening 😊
Love your adventure so far. Night in the desert 🏜 totally scary 😧. Can’t wait for more to come. You are a brave soul to attempt all these things alone. Be safe always. 🙋🏼♀️🇺🇸👍🏻
I bought this book for my son-in-law…he is a bicyclist….your 4 part videos of your 2 years were amazing…you are an extraordinary person❤
You and Ghost town living are my favorite channels on UA-cam. Can’t wait for more 💕
Thank you Martijn i am watching this in the Mountains of Catalunya Spain a lovely way to spend a saturday evening ...again many thanks..
Martijn, this is amazing! This video is a piece of art.
I’ve been following your mountain adventure and am not into biking at all but I watched this and was totally enthralled. I’ve been to most of the places you visited and your videography is fantastic. You always tell a good story.
Hey man, I discovered your channel over Christmas and watched all the videos. You really put a lot of effort in what you’re doing! I’m originally from Europe, living in US. Ordered your book after hearing how to do it.:) Hope it contributes a little so you can continue your Italy adventure! Good luck!
One of the better videos I’ve watched in these ten years. You are a madman for sure, fragile build but unbreakable spirit.....second and third videos are nice but this one is amazing.
Great video. Very inspiring. Makes me feel VERY guilty for not doing something similar. Muchly looking forward to part 2.
Wauw!!! 🙏 Keep up the beautiful, inpriring life journey your on! Much love ✌
Wow! Bravo!! 👏👏👏👏👏
You are an amazing storyteller with a beautiful story to tell.♥️💥☀️🚴🏻♀️
Im so inspired by your attitude, and so impressed by the creative vision you’ve pulled off here. The way you’ve told this story through word, film and sound, is so good! Good for you, brother. And good for everyone who gets to see this
Just Brilliant.
What an amazing journey! That storm was frightening 😳for me and I’m just watching . Glad you made it out alive to finish journey .
Martijn, this is the best video I have ever watched on UA-cam. Congrats, Pepe.
This is such a raw, gritty film. Loved the journey and it felt as if we (the audience) were right there as the camera!
Beautiful, man! You are such a good narrator! Both visualy and story-telling vise. Looking forward for more. Poetry!
This is one of the most inspiring videos we've ever seen. Filmmaking, storytelling, and an incredible personal and spiritual journey told beautifully. We're both humbled and inspired to improve ourselves and seek out adventures that can be as impactful to us personally as this.
Found you through the stone cabin videos... Honestly you're one of the greatest YT has to offer.
This is the best bike adventure series ever made. Actually, the best outdoor adventure series ever made. Amazing scenery and cinematography and a Herculean mental and physical feat. Oh yeah and it’s so fun to watch. Kudos
This is literally what i wanna do one day in the future just leaving everything behind and explore the world with the most basics of living
Looks VERY scary in that storm. Your commentary and the dramatic
Videos are amazing. Hopefully I will see the rest of the adventure!
