  • Why does everyone hate Pam Beesly? Why do people think she's the worst character of The Office? I have a love-hate relationship with Pam. So to find out how Pam became so unlikable I watched The Office and analyzed her character from season 1 to season 9.

    LIFE UPDATE
For anyone who has supported my channel over the last few years, thank you. You have helped me finally make my dream of having a youtube channel come true. I'm sorry that I have not been posting frequently. I will try my best to keep posting commentary videos. It was hard for me to find something I could stick to but I think I can stick to this. Thank you for your patience.
My personal life has been crazy. As you know the pandemic has affected Canada in a way I never imagined it would. I've been going from job to job and my life has become very unstable. Hopefully, things get better in Canada soon. I'm thinking of making an update video but I don't even know where to begin. 😅

In this video, I did a character analysis of Pam Beesly, played by Jenna Fisher, from The Office. I watched season 1 to season 5 and analyzed the positives and negatives of this character. Of course, who doesn't like Pam from the first seasons. She is kind, funny, and sweet. We see her go through a tough situation when she kisses Jim Halpert and the love triangle becomes more obvious to us and Pam. As the seasons go by Pam's character is maturing and learning. Once out of the love triangle she starts to become stronger now that she is with Jim. But by season 5 something is not right. Something has changed. She has become annoying. Why did the writers do this? We will never know. But that is how Pam became so unlikable.

I think the writers did her dirty. She started out as a witty, quiet observer. It's what made her interesting and mysterious. Almost like a stand in for the audience amidst the chaos of the other characters. But as the Pam/Jim drama continued, they made her more into a "girlfriend" stereotype - anxious, insecure, etc. I wish they'd let her stay laid back and cool as a wife and mom. But of course they didn't. Jim got to be cool, as a dad. But they really robbed Pam. It sucked as a woman to watch.

Jim and Pam both sucked towards the end. And honestly, on rewatch, you kind of see that Jim (while portrayed as the fun, "cool" one) was a bully and a jerk. Pam was quietly strong and gracious. I agree she became more of a stereotype later on, and an awkward annoying one at that.

I propose that her switch to the "dark side" happened after art her art show. Nobody from the office came to support her and she realized that her co-workers didn't care about her, so she stopped caring for them. That's when she started treating them with distain. But she did go a little too far with it and became too self involved.

Lucky we are that she didn't follow a political career. But Toby wanted to go. And Oscar went with his bf and said some mean but true things. Oscar said she couldn't be honest, wich made her be more honest, I think it was the next episode she made this decision. Also Michael ofc.

    • @KatieBeanz4eva
      @KatieBeanz4eva 8 місяців тому +5

It's not true that no one came. Michael and Oscar came. And she saw them. Oscar was in the moment with Gil and probably didn't see her/couldn't find her - but she could have approached her. Yes Gil was chatting shit but she could have stopped him in his tracks.
Also and I feel like this is super important. Pam doesn't like her co-workers. Like, even a little bit. Why would she expect them to come other than her entitlement.
Michael is maybe to stupid to see Pam doesn't like him and supports him and Oscar and Gil are probably there for the "Art". How Pam got into an art show with those pics I'll never understand.
Pam's sense of entitlement about her art makes me heave a little bit. Her treatment of her co-workers actually makes me sick.

I liked Pam in the first 3 seasons, but then she completely changed when she finally got with Jim. She started out as this friendly quiet girl, then after she got with Jim she turned into an outspoken loudmouth know-it-all. The more I watch the series the more I dislike Pam. She relentlessly flirts with Jim whilst she is engaged, then she feigns shock when Jim reveals he has feelings for her. She actively tries to derail Jim's relationship with Karen. She goes with Michael, immediately regrets it, tries to poach clients from DM, then wants her old job back and doesn't mind displacing the employees that stayed. Then, ugggh.....the chair episode...she behaves like a spoiled brat. Here's my theory on Pam: she stays at DM because she loves the camera crews following her around because she's really a narcissist.
Just my humble opinion and it's just a TV show so it really doesn't matter anyway!

I liked Pam a lot in the beginning, because her situations were were relatable, you could see yourself in her and you genuinely wanted the best for her (and Jim). I personally still liked Jim when he was with Karen and I wouldn't have minded if they didn't end up together. Regardless, I was still very happy when we got to see their first dating period, engagement and so on. they just kept proving that they were that great couple while she still wanted to grow as a person. I think her character had a downfall when Jim and Pam decided to have Cece and their downsides became plain rude and annoying with them "using" Cece or assuming everyone loved her as they did (even faking it when Pam pretended she drew pictures for the others. it would have been bad if those were drawn by Cece already because it's pretty prideful to assume that a coworker would like a poorly child-drawn picture as an apology but they managed to make it even worse). Also her pregnancies, especially the second one, were ... I mean, yes, realistic but, in a way, "too much" and one dimensional. The only thing she could focus on were how they made her less lovable, when Jim had already proven countless times that he truly loves her. apart from that, Pam started to become rude and annoying while not growing. We know that she did not have good sales but how that thing got resolved? they never told us and that issue was never addressed. they took away all the good things in Pam that made her human and just left her downsides which rendered her a very unlikable character.

I don’t necessarily hate Pam, but reading all of these comments made me think that, as much of a jerk that Roy was, he probably could’ve stayed for both Pam’s development and his own.
One idea I had in mind was to have Pam still be the quiet, gentle-minded receptionist who is caring and loyal to her coworkers, but also somewhat arrogant and selfish when she feels threatened. That kind of behavior could have been caused by her being the underdog nobody amongst the higher-ranked, more outspoken members of the branch (especially Michael, who could keep his entire arc but still be a bit of an unintentional bully to everyone). She primarily dates Roy out of self-hatred and thinking that she has nobody else, but secretly has feelings for Jim-the only person who treated her as an equal and who loves her back.
Roy could keep his jerk personality and constantly belittle others out of his own arrogance, yet he is also heavily influenced by Michael’s behavior as well. With his relationship to Pam, he only saw her for being pretty and vulnerable and since she gave into him so willingly, he thinks that he doesn’t have to put any effort into the relationship.
We can keep the whole Jim-Pam “will they won’t they” thing up to the point when Jim confesses his love to Pam while she is engaged to Roy. Out of her own insecurity, she rejects him before he gets transferred to the upper branch where he meets Karen and begins a relationship with her fuelled by his heartbreak. When he returns to his previous branch with Karen (and Andy), Pam would become desperate to break them up due to her still having feelings for Jim, but around the season where the real counterparts would’ve been dating, Jim would still be with Karen and Pam would finally get the poignant message that Jim, while still best friends with her, had moved on.
Around this time, the entire drama of Michael and Jan’s failed relationship, as well as Ryan’s scandal and downfall would come into play. With all of this in mind, Roy would come to the realization of how easily his cushy position and his relationship with Pam could fumble if he is not devoted and careful. With Pam now heartbroken, Roy’s hidden softer side would come out and he would become more involved with helping Pam move on from Jim (and even hold off the marriage until they were ready). Acknowledging the mistakes he had made in the past, he would also start investigating his own talents he never knew he had (like singing and playing the piano), while Pam would start opening up to her hidden talent with art (maybe even as a way to fully express herself) and a fully-changed Pam and Roy would get married and have kids by the end of the series.
With this storyline, Pam and Jim could still keep their friendship (maybe have a new friendship develop between her and Karen) and the rest of the arcs could still be played out. The series could still keep it’s format of having deeply flawed characters without changing their personalities for the worst and also give the message of how negative people are able to change for the better if they give themselves the chance.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk 😉

I don’t hate Pam but I don’t exactly like her either. The worst she did was kiss Jim while still engaged to Roy. The whole thing about not supporting Jim is false, in my opinion. She was legitimately concerned that she was holding him back from pursuing his passions, which just so happened to clash with her own wants (happens a lot in relationships). When she told Jim she was afraid she wasn’t enough for him, he said she was and she and the family came before everything. She went by his word but when she noticed he actually wasn’t happy, she did something about it and they ended up moving anyway.

THANK YOU. I agree with your assessment thus far. I adored Pam in the earlier seasons (1, 2, and 3 to some extent). I was all about P&J, will-they-won't-they drama. Pam became unbearable once she and Jim got together! And even before, although it didn't bother me initially, on re-watches I began to find her more and more unlikable. And it's definitely not because she gained "confidence" (I don't think she did- I think she became arrogant if anything). Karen is actually one of my favorites, and she's far from a shrinking violet. I appreciated how Pam was an excellent representation of a more reserved, thoughtful, non-controversial but not bland personality - those exist in the real world, but not so much on TV. She's attractive without being a bombshell. She's kind and most of all, gracious. You can completely understand Jim's fascination with and admiration for her.
By season 4, she took a sharp turn into...something else. Less patient, less thoughtful. I still liked her and the P&J love story on first watch, but on rewatch it's not very interesting. Pam and Jim's arrogance and condescension towards others in the office became very apparent too. Also- I'm with you so much on missing out on their first date, and the early stages of their actual relationship! As a hard core fan, I was so disappointed this was glossed over. I also have strong feelings about how the relationship reveal (to the audience), with the little "they're not, but they totally are" game annoying and unsophisticated. It was the first real misstep in their story (imo). I too found the PDA to be cheesy and somehow unconvincing, it just felt super forced. Maybe the writers were doing 'fan service' to make up for all the prior seasons' dramatics, but it really didn't work for me.
On to the next video...I appreciate all the work you put into making these! Cheers!

Why do you think so many domestic violence victims remain with their abusive partners for years, sometimes even leaving them and then going back multiple times? @@PearlsandRoses No, its not a fact at all.
It is definitely a fact Stanley cheated. He admitted to 3 affairs while he was married.
Most people would agree Angela cheated. She had sex with Dwight many times while engaged to Andy.
It is much more of a grey area whether or not Pam cheated though. Jim kissed her in the moment and she kissed him back while she was engaged to Roy. She never slept with Jim nor took it any further. Shortly after the kiss, she ended her relationship with Roy.
The dictionary used to define adultery as one person in a marriage having sexual intercourse with someone other than the person they were married to.
Now cheating in a relationship is defined much more broadly (particularly with rise of social media) without being limited to specific acts (sexual intercourse) and different sources consider what counts as cheating (infidelity) or not in a relationship differently.
What Pam did is in the grey area, unlike with Stanley or Angela.

    • @PearlsandRoses
      @PearlsandRoses 6 місяців тому +1

@@garym6338 Yes, it absolutely is a fact that she cheated. What she did falls into the "spectrum" of cheating on someone she promised romantic fidelity to. And simply because you believe something falls within a gray area does not mean the person accused is free and clear of any wrongdoing. There was nothing positive about her engaging in a kiss with Jim while in a relationship with Roy; she cheated, like Stanley, Dwight and Angela. Only differences was that it was one time, and did not require her taking her clothes off. But just like them, it did require intimate physical contact with someone who isn't your romantic partner, romantic feelings for someone who isn't your romantic partner, secrecy and lying.

Case 1: She got a tiny bluetooth for her and jim when she went to art school, showing her tech-savviness, and suddenly she can't record videos on touch screens? That's the opening for a can of worms of inconsistent writing. She was a totally different person that didnt make sense, right?
She didnt become strong, confident and independent. She became arrogant, Mary Sue, Hollywood strong woman. She was already confident in a good way but still not brave enough. I think they just ditched it. Also, people say she's a cheater? please, what about oscar, angela and dwight? It's a little bit like people hate her because they hate someone else in real life and take it out on Pam.
If the writers wrote her better, she could've gotten better character development like other people... I really hated the sudden awkwardness between jim and pam in season 4 to 7 and season 9. DIdnt make sense to me. There are just so many inconsistencies in writing Pam and Jim.

The fact that anyone would hate Pam is so consistent with the polarized world we live in and the hateful nature of the internet. I mean a character may annoy you but hate is pretty strong . Not to get political but even Obama is adored by many Americans while hated by many as well. And he is a pretty likeable man. I love Pam and the role she had in the show. I love Jenna Fischer and how she created Pam. She went from a quiet mousy type to speaking her mind. She was Jim's Michael's and Dwight's best friend. How can you be that to all three main characters?? Her exchanges with Ryan are sooooo great and underrated. I love the writers knew the importance of her character in the series and gave her arguably the most relatable and human role. I didnt say the best role as that was Michael but the most important. Three times in this series Pam changed the tone and direction of where it was going . Her Dundie support of Michael changed the whole dynamic of the series and made the show less cringeworthy. Her beach speech was brave and she, like Jim earlier, decided to go for it and let the cards fall where they may. I admire that as she knew it might go nowhere and she was mocked for it. Of course Jim is celebrated for not taking NO for an answer and kissing Pam after the fact and knowing she was engaged albeit to a guy who didnt value. Pam's speech gave her and Jim their life together and I admire her new found guts. Finally she was the only one to declare her support for Michael when he left to create his own company. That took balls and a belief in his ability to succeed. I seriously would not have watched this show for nine seasons without Pam and Jim storyline. The comedy parts are great but people like Andy are hard to watch. People tend to hate Pam because she is genuine and reacts the way real people do. They are often jealous, they are hurt easily they often settle on a life less than they want. The most touching moments in the show are 80% Pam Beesley. I think she is the heart of the show.. The other characters are forgiven as they are one dimensional so there faults are found to be funny. Thats all they are in the show for. I think Jenna has to do the heavy lifting as she is the only normal one that has an all round character and life. So she gets criticized because she has to react to all the stuff going on in her life. Cmon people wake the $%^%$ up. She lies alot??? Thats your best shot. She speaks her mind -really thats a terrible thing. Pam is not perfect but the jealously and hate people have for her is mind numbing but is so consistent with the polarizing world we love in as when the show was having its run on TV it was a different world for sure. Jenna Fisher's eyes alone played a bigger role in the success of the show than half the cast. So suck it haters and leave your moralistic and impossible standards for the fantasy genres of movies and TV that seem to rule the entertainment business today!
