The Take normal? Pam wasn’t normal 😂 there are stages to being an office fan. Beginners love Jim and Pam but it takes a seasoned veteran to realize mike and holly are the special couple with Dwight and angela being a distant second but mid level people tend to like Dwight and Angela most. The longer you watch the more you realize pam is the worst character who holds Jim back with no awareness
Random Dude I suggest you watch the video and appreciate a normalized character on television with actual realistic flaws that is greatly underused in the media.
when pam said "I don't think anything's going to change in are lives now with work and two kids nothing interesting is going to happen to us for a long long time" I just thought y-o-u bitch. the look on Jim's face just says {so your not happy I'm happy I love our life I love our kids I love you how could I not be happy? am I nothing to you? and the kids did you really just say our lives are uninteresting are we not good enough for you?) she might as well spit in his face. and when he's being a good husband and trying to be a better provider to honor his wife and children she terns her nose up at him again might as well spit in his face. when your a parent life's not about you its about the kids *ANYTHING* AND *EVERYTHING* IS FOR *THEM* .
Such a hard life when everyone compliments you all the time SUCH A HARD LIFE YOUR LADIES HAVE trust me you don’t want the flip side of the coin the guys life no one ever complimenting you or worse calling you gross
That episode immediately followed Phyllis's wedding, where Pam had reunited with Roy. In turn, that led Jim to be more committed to his relationship with Karen. The two of them spent the episode working to convince Dwight that Jim had been turned into a vampire. Oscar and Gil turned up, but Gil insulted Pam's artwork. This is Gil's final appearance in the series, and Oscar decides to break up with him 6 episodes later.
I think Karen was being really controlling over Jim at that point, when she learnt he used to have a crush on her. I think Jim probably wanted to go to the art show but didn't want to annoy Karen
Yes but then during the beach episode Pam got selective amnesia...she didn't acknowledge that Michael went to her art show much less bought one of her paintings. After she walked on the hot rocks she tells the office "none of you went to my art show" i dont know how she could have forgotten about Michael. She felt shitty that night and he made her feel better by showing up as a friend would do. So what the hell Beesly?! Michael went to your art show because he's the world's best boss! 😉
Same we should form a group except we don't meet in person because you might murder me also not over the phone because you might track it down or give my number to telemarketers also not over any social media site because i dont have any because I'm worried the wrong people will find my profile and figure out things about me actually never contact me again you psycho
@vis mylife I don't think she wanted Michael with her mother because Michael was not a good partner at the time and was extremely sexist to her most of her time working there.
Briana Oliver well that’s sort of biased, it is known through Pam that Michael makes her mother extremely happy, even though he did act like a jerk when he broke up
I get high on the scenes of Pam's bursts of bold assertiveness. The show is set to a dull monotonous workplace backdrop and every time Pam speaks up positive change happens and it's so heartening to see.
The dull monotony works perfectly for setting the pace for moments like those. That scene in Beach Games where she stands up and confronts everyone is so wonderful, not to mention her sticking by what she says in the next episode, even when everyone makes jokes about it in front of her. Her apologising to Karen but not taking back what she said is another brilliant development in her character. 👏🏻
@@razkable she didn’t tho. In her conversation on the beach with everyone, she wanted to show how upset with everyone that she said that no one came to her art show, even though Michael, Oscar, and Gil went to it. She was so upset she wanted to block them out from her memory all together.
Often people hate on Pam for her borderline flirtatious friendship with Jim, while being engaged to Roy, but then they totally forgive Angela for sleeping with Dwight while being engaged to Andy, I don't understand this
Abdullah Ansari It’s like when the sweet, cute , semi popular girl is caught flirting with someone while in a relationship. Everyone is shocked, surprised and upset Yet when the bitchy stuck up girl gets caught cheating, no one cares because well- she’s a bitch, people don’t perceive her as a good person.
one of the Pam scenes that touches me the most is when she's still engaged to Roy. earlier in the episode, she talked about how she wanted a house with a terrace when she grew up. during the episode she decides to pursue an artistic opportunity, and we see her arguing about it with Roy. and then she gives an interview portion where she's talking about how its unrealistic to want a house with a terrace, how they don't even have that kind of house in Pennsylvania, and she starts crying. even though shes talking about how she wont live in a house like that, its clear that she's thinking about how she wont become an artist, its unrealistic for her to pursue her dreams, because this is what Roy has made her believe. idk man but that scene always makes me tear up. shes so good and sweet and it sucks that she didn't have a boyfriend who supported her aspirations. go live in that house with a terrace, pam!
Yes!! i was so heartbroken and shocked for her... like they might not have those in pennsylvania but other states might or you can built one ??? its like... she couldnt fathom having what she wanted even in her imagination.
That scene and her art exhibit scene chokes me up every time. It's one of the reason why I dislike Oscar as a character. He thinks he's better than everyone but ends up being just as bad and horrible as most of the characters, idk I just hated what they said about her art. I don't see Oscar and Gil having the courage to do what she did.
@@Lipstick.and.Dynamite Oscar was right though. Pam lacked courage and she knew it herself. Why would he sugarcoat it when he didn't even know she was listening. It doesn't take to have courage for a person to speak about other's lack of one. And sometimes to start trying harder, you have to face harsh reality rather than stay in a bubble thinking it's alright.
V HS I feel like Jim tried to support her artistic career but in the end he kinda jumped the gun by going ahead with his own career pursuits. Like when they had kids it was just assumed Pam would be the one to stay at home with the kids. Obviously Jim had a better chance of making a living from his passion for sports promotion because he already had a lot of experience in sales but I still don't remember any kind of conversation about trading the role of of housewife for a career in art.
A lot of fans began to hate Pam when she became more assertive. It spoke volumes of how people (not just men) see women. I’m so happy they grew her character that way.
It's a nasty two-headed axe. Both people who see assertive women as "bitches" and those who are apathetic and want a character who seems to suggest it's okay.
One of the best Office examinations I've ever seen. I would say Pam slowly stole the show from Jim as the years went on. They really dug into her character, while I feel Jim's internal journey was largely invisible to us. I'd love to see one about Micheal and Jan's horrifying relationship, or Dwight and Angela's unusual path to love. Bravo, guys.
@@daver1161 I could see that. I don't think most men can relate to the internal problems of an insecure woman anyway. I think all psychological struggles are relevant. And, according to the likes my post has, it seems like most people agree that Pam's story was good. Unfortunately, you're in the minority, my friend.
@@flowstategmng Did you really just say because of your likes that you're right? I could go to any Pam-critical video right now and pull up a comment that disparages her heartlessly that has 3.5k likes. You must be new to the internet so I'll forgive you. Also, we're not friends. I don't even know you.
@@daver1161 You really think I'm new to the internet? You're just being a smart-ass. I should have worded that more carefully. You're in the minority HERE. Of course you'll find different numbers on a Pam-critical video, duh. Why even come here and voice your opinion? Seems like you should have known you would be the minority opinion here. And, saying 'my friend' is just trying to be cordial. I take it back now, I didn't realize you would be such a dick about it.
As much as I love women doing amazing things like becoming ceos and starting revolutions and what not. I beileve more women like pam needs to be shown more. Pam teaches women that it Ok to not have big aspirations but also to not let yourself settle for a life you won't be happy in.
Yes, I hated that Pam was so underappreciated at the beginning of the show, but as it progressed, she fell in love with Jim, and grew a whole lot more confident and assertive in herself. 😊
lmao that shit takes work. I try to practice my typing regularly to keep up at my job but it has taken me years to get to 90 and thats without punctuation and grammar lol
Most receptionists can type that fast. My mother used to type around 120 wpm and that was back in the day on an actual typewriter where if you screwed up, you had to start over or use massive amounts of whiteout.
She is so relatable. I also love how motherhood was a real game changer for her, a stress, and always present. The kids were not just a ploy like they were so classically in shows like Friends.
the kids were definitely a plot device as much as in Friends, which is fine, there are already many characters and kids actors are expensive and there are a lot of restrictions
MyssBlewm You mean the office needed to put up with her crap. She gave then lice, and her co-workers are supposed to be okay with that? What’s wring with you?
Bell Matthew Yeah but the point is that they made an already bad situation worse instead of trying to make it better. People love to complain but never ever try to solve the issue they’re complaining about
@@Bell_Matt Well, I mean, she had to deal with the fact that her daughter caught lice and brought it home so Pam had been up all night trying to take care of her kids and clean up the house. She then went into work and once everyone blamed Meredith for lice Pam thought maybe she could stay quiet and people will forget. Instead Meredith shaved all her hair off, Pam volunteered to buy all the mayo, did Creed's hair only to have him not do her hair, and then she accidentally outs herself as the true lice carrier. The point of the whole episode is that despite Pam's best efforts to keep her home separate from her work sometimes she'll accidentally get her home life problems leak into her work life and make a mess of things. On the upside, Meredith and Pam bond over the mess and Pam gives Meredith kudos for raising her kids by herself.
The thing I really liked about Pam was that even though she was a normie, she didn't freak out around the office weirdos, or be overly judgmental about anyone's choices or behavior unless they directly affected someone else. She even appreciated Michael's good heart and uniqueness, which not many of his employees did. She was sort of the neutral moral compass. And I think that makes her stand out :-)
@@daver1161 ahhh really? You can expect female employee to act super chill when she learns her boss is messing with her mother? You’re delusional or you just want to make up ridiculous excuses to criticize her no matter what.
@@daver1161 Micheal has continuously harassed and made sexual comments towards Pam and other sexist remarks towards that women. You would want Micheal to DATE YOUR MOTHER? And then DUMP HER ON HER BIRTHDAY BECAUSE SHE IS OLDER THAN HIM?
I think this is why I identify with Pam so much because I’m exceptionally ordinary. I’m not stunningly pretty but I’m not ugly, I’m bookish but I’m not especially smart, I’m occasionally funny but not gut-bustingly hilarious, I’m just always average at everything I try to do. I’m never good but I’m never bad. But I have a few really amazing friends that make me feel like, even as ordinary as I am, I’m indispensable. And as someone as forgettable as me, in the right environment, you are the most special human being and you are going to make a difference in so many lives. And that feels good. Because when I reconnect with old faces, they seem to remember the footprint I left in their world. Even though I am exceptionally ordinary.
@Buttrape Bill most people have something significant about them, like being a great guitarist, or an artist, or being the really smart, really funny, really quiet or really annoying one but some people just don't have that distinguishable quality and that's what makes them so 'ordinary'. so no, 90% of people aren't ordinary, even if they're not a movie star.
i love how when pam starts crying the boom mic guy came to talk to her but when people are floating down rivers or casually talks about crimes they’ve been in they just sit there 😂😂
I think that's because he had feelings for her. As you might remember, that mic guy was going through a divorce at the same time Pam and Jim were having marital struggles and I think the two of them bonded out of loneliness.
Maybe they'd interacted other times but it didn't make the doc. Only this time they actually used the part where boom op steps in, because the doc is winding down. Also possible that crew would've been less likely to interact earlier on. Boom Op isn't SUPPOSED to step in like that of course, but since they're in the home stretch he figures, "Screw it." I also don't remember if it's stated how long that Boom Op has been employed. It's normal for crew to shift around, especially since they were shooting for nine freaking years. (Also, obviously, he had a crush on her, so there's that.)
Anyone saying that Pam became too “bitchy” or “selfish” in the later seasons is extremely hypocritical. Michael and Dwight treated their coworkers badly and put them in danger multiple times yet are regarded as the best and funniest characters on the show. Jim was also selfish at various points and didn’t consult Pam on important decisions, expecting her to just be ok with them. Pam was the rock of the show and it wouldn’t have survived with or past Michael without her. She brought the heart and human element that was needed to put the office above other comedies
Dwight and michael do shitty things, but theyre seen as bad people on the show for the most part Also Pam did big decisions before asking Jim too so thats completely irrelevant
Ryan Comeau Pam is one of my favorite characters:) She really is a good person inside, you could just tell within the first episode. I’m glad she got out of her shell, she so deserves it:)
It makes me sad when I hear that because I really think it's indicative of our culture's issues with women asserting themselves. You can be a bitch trope or a girl-next-door one, but there is nothing for you in between. There are times when Pam is wrong or flawed, but I never saw her be a bitch. Get real people.
I didn't even know Pam got hate honestly. She's just such a sweet character I don't get it. Like sure she's normal but she isn't even boring, she's an artist. She's passionate about stuff. She's very funny and has a lot of banter. I've always liked her a lot. I can understand that she wouldn't be everyone's favorite character (even tho she actually probably is mine from the show) but I don't see how people can hate her. She's genuinely a nice person. People use tv shows as an escapism too much...like they can say all they want they love Kelly and Angela and they hate Pam but we all know IRL nobody would want to hang out with Kelly when they would really appreciate having a Pam in their life cuz she's just that great. She's nice, sweet and funny. What would they want more from her ?
Pam is a sweet and nice character overall, but people often hate on her for complacency and weakness. I personally consider the latter two criticisms of Pam to have some grains of truth in them, but to also be quite harsh and hurtful when expressed to that extent of frankness and contempt. However, when surveying different opinions of Pam and explanations for those opinions, those traits come up repeatedly among the most common criticisms of Pam's character. As far as I can tell, you will find that, since strength and various character virtues related to strength such as determination, doggedness, assertiveness, perseverance, resilience, etc. are highly valued, a character who does not possess such traits, at least not to the extent that would satisfy those who expect to see them to a certain extent in someone, that character will be held in contemptuous and highly critical views for the lack of such desired traits and receive a great deal of criticism accordingly. People complain that Pam is too complacent and tolerant of mediocrity, lacking more ambition like Jim or Karen. They may complain that Pam is too unassertive and how her being a doormat makes her "pathetic." They may complain that Pam is undetermined and lacks perseverance for failing to continue pursuing her art dreams, or work with gaining skills in graphic design, etc. However, I would argue that people are too harsh in these criticisms of Pam. Pam had an unsupportive fiance who squashed her dreams and held her back, some setbacks in life that got in the way of her goals, and various ties to her surrounding circumstances in their present state (such as her relationship with Jim, familial-like bonds with a number of coworkers that she grew close to over the years, and a comfortable life in Scranton) that made a pursuit of normalcy and an embrace of the mundane to be understandable. While it is true that Pam could work more on those strength-related qualities people criticized her for lacking, at least many of those same people fail to take into account how Pam was gaining those traits, but that it takes time for people to change qualities about themselves in the quest of self-improvement and the lifelong journey of perpetual growth and development toward better and better states of being. Pam did become bolder and more outspoken as the series progressed. She did become more assertive of her own needs and interests, both in the face of others who would have walked all over her before, and in the face of circumstances that she would have previously retreated from in defeat. She gave up on a career in art, but did not give up her pursuit of artistic endeavor completely, while managing to incorporate artistic touches in her work at DM such as the chore wheel and the warehouse mural. She stood up to Angela at times when Angela was harsh with her, and did not suffer in silence when Michael or Ryan said something inappropriate. Those people also often fail to take into account some of the difficulties previously mentioned that threaten to slow down such progress (an unsuitable relationship with Roy, setbacks from challenges of pursuing a career in art, and not wanting to lose the positive things she had gained through her connection to Dunder Mifflin and Scranton and her life in those spheres). While challenges and setbacks such as these do not necessarily render self-improvement impossible, they do increase the difficulty of its actualization, and make a slower progress toward its progressive actualizations more understandable. So, in consideration of how Pam progressed to have greater strength-related virtue over time, and how such traits supplemented already-existing kindness-related virtues of her friendliness, nurturing care, compassion and empathy, as well as some traces of uniqueness-related qualities such as a quirky charm and wit, I would still consider Pam to be a wonderful character overall. She is undeserving of the harshest criticisms against her, and, in my opinion, is rightly cherished by the fans who appreciate her very real and demonstrative qualities.
@@johnwalker1058 "At least many of those same people fail to take into account how Pam was gaining those traits, but that it takes time for people to change qualities about themselves in the quest of self-improvement and the lifelong journey of perpetual growth and development toward better and better states of being." >>> I couldn't have said it better myself. This is exactly it. I could understand disliking her in the first seasons (even if I still feel like hate is such a strong word especially for fictional characters) but she had a great growth and completely better herself to actually go for things she wants in life, and be strong and open with issues. I know there's some controversy about the trope of Jim's job and how it affected negatively his marriage with Pam. A lot of people thought that was unnecessary but it's in those moments in the show that we saw Pam had grown. Instead of not asking or demanding anything she used to suffer through with Roy, but she didn't let that happen with Jim especially since she had children this time.
@Raquel That genuinely might be it. Pam is a pretty relatable woman. Women can see themselves in her and men can see a lot of women they know in her. It wouldn't surprise me she could create very strong feeling of hate and distaste in people who are misogynistic (regardless if it's internalized or not). You can dislike her that's fair, but hating her seems really irrational from how she behaves frankly.
@Raquel Honestly, I don't see how people blame Pam in season 9. She was working a full time job while taking care of a baby and a toddler. Jim didn't tell her about his plans to uproot their entire family and move them to a place completely different from the one she was used to. Jim also wasn't under nearly as much stress. Yes, he had to do his job (like every other person) but as we see, he's having the time of his life. He didn't even care that Pam getting a job in Philly could have ruined the work she put in to get where she was. Jim also said to Toby, "If I didn't do things without telling her, she would still be with Roy" which was honestly a shitty thing to say. He basically said that Pam wasn't capable of making decisions for herself. I like Jim but he isn't perfect and acting like he's so much better than Pam is just plain ignorant
@Raquel Rubbish. Pam was a deeply flawed, weak woman and people disliked her for numerous reasons, almost none of which were because of her being female. She shamelessly toyed with Jim for nearly 3 seasons, friendzoning and manipulating someone she could see was clearly in love with her, so she could get the respect and emotional connection she wasn't getting from Roy with another man, with no regard for how this affected him. She destroyed Jim, forcing him to move away so she couldn't wreck him any further. She was well aware of his feelings, as you can see in the "Jinx" episode, where she's telling the silent Jim that he can tell her anything. She sees the raw pain on his eyes and you can see her face drop once she realizes she's taken the joke too far and sh1t just got real. I am glad they eventually came together, the Jim & Pam relationship was one of the things most compelling about the show, but don't try and dismiss the Pam dislike as "MUH SEXISM!!!" as that's just a whitewash. Ultimately, she was a coward that didn't deserve Jim and Jim deserved better than sloppy seconds to a degenerate sexist pig like Roy.
I adore Pam, but when I first saw The Office years ago I liked her but I thought she was boring and didn't understand why she didn't improved her life (or dump Roy), but now that I'm older I understand. Not all people is aware of themselves or what is holding them back and certainly most of people get stuck in life. Pam was scared of change and she was very insecure yet she was special and quirky in her own way. She was "normal" yet she had a great imagination,, she was playful and sensitive. Her art may seemed simple and cute, but it was very personal , it reflected her personality at the time, I wonder what else she would create now that she take a big step. Other thing I like about Pam and other characters in the Office is that they show that there is no age limit to pursuit your dreams, find love and live the life you want.
That part of Pam (being stuck early in the show) is so typical in the world though. Countless people will not risk the (sometimes known) mediocre or worse position they are in because of a fear that they cannot handle what comes after it or that it will be worse. It is a very real version of many people in Pam's position,
When people around you treat you like shit you begin to feel like you deserve it... Like you are worthless. No one appreciates Pam except Jim but when they get married he just takes her for granted...
yeah i agree with your point about her art -- pam is ordinary, and though doesn't mean she lacks depth as a person, her art reflects her life and her surroundings (the office). that's why when oscar and gil scrutinised her art and called it "motel art", it hurt her so much, because her art is a reflection of herself. if the art that reflects her is considered "motel art", then where does that leave her as a person? that's also why i love the scene where michael tells her he's proud of her and makes her feel better about herself.
@@AnthonyBurback thank you, but dont love me. love the poor. make sure they have some place to sleep, clothes on their back, food to eat, and the medical care they need.
Even her hair is normal she didn't have that trendy expensive sitcom hair like the actors from friends or How i met your mother. She was just a normal pretty girl that was completely relatable.
I was kind of sad to see the characters getting more glammed up as the show progressed, including Pam with her sleek, bouncy curls. They also started casting more Hollywood-looking actors in the later seasons. It took away from the refreshing realism of the show.
@@hollywoodshopaholic I defend the hairstyle change on Jim.. in the last seasons you can clearly see how he looks older and more mature than in the first seasons, so having the same hairstyle would have made him look dumb, like the guy who wants to keep looking young forever. So I approve how he changed his hair (and the way he dresses) from the "I don't care about my looks or my life" young adult to "I do care about dressing properly and my life" mature adult.
@@mandovid it was about realism. Her hairstyle in later seasons is more difficult to maintain, so most women wouldnt curl their hair every day and style them, so it is less realistic and more show like
I think it is a bit sad that whenever a character appears quiet and reserved and subsequently suffers from bullying, he or she is asked to change and become more aggressive or arrogant. Why can't other characters change and become more considerate ?
Agreed. I've always been that way and in school teachers would tell me to change and toughen up etc. and that the other students would accept me then. Society doesn't accept quiet and reserved that's the truth, you have to be aggressive and a good talker.
I agree, but she didn't completely become this aggressive character, she is still shy and reserved, she was just around people she was close to and knew when she had to speak up. She didn't do it all the time only when it was needed, like when she told Jim that she didn't like that he makes decisions without her.
@@krazyk931 I don't like pam, she had shown time and time again that she never earned anything she got. She tries to become an artist but fails. Goes to college and again, fails out. Then she has the audacity to lie her way into the office manager position. A job that she was neither qualified for or deserved. She also gets to draw the mural without any real art experience. Why does she deserve any of that?
Pam gave up her dream to pursue graphic design for Jim. Being with him was "enough" for her. Jim on the other hand makes a lot of big decisions without consulting her first and expects her to just go along happily. That's why she was upset. She felt like she didn't matter to him as much as his own personal goals. She was also comfortable with the life she was living and personal connections she had made. She needed to see that Jim also valued her above his own interests and proving it to her gave her the courage to start a new chapter with him.
No. She left Jim for months to pursue her dream. Jim never complained. She FAILED and came back to Jim to boost back her ego. Jim went after his dream. Pam CONSTANTLY complained and made him feel guilty for his success. He had to let his dream go until she gave her PERMISSION again. Pam was my favourite until the last few seasons. She became selfish. That's not being "assertive" or self-confident. They ruined her character.
catdog Pam’s dream was short term and wouldn’t effect Jim’s day to day life aside from her absence. She was too distracted by wanting to be back in scranton with Jim to do her best. She had a second chance to pass but she realized that it would put a deeper strain on her relationship with Jim. Her short term dream was becoming more long term and so she sacrificed it for the sake of her relationship with Jim. It wasn’t to boost her ego. If she wanted to boost her ego she would have stayed and tried again. She got Jim’s permission before she even went to New York to pursue graphic design. Jim on the other hand jumped right into his new career and wanted Pam to move without really considering her feelings about it.
Best thing about Pam and also Jim is that they had such a beautiful love story but they had so much else going on individually. They had real characters
Who hates Pam? Who? I can't find a single comment of anyone who hates Pam specifically and I've never heard of anyone who does in fucking real life either. Why you gotta make shit up?
@@xg3990 Wasn't aware there were people dumb enough to need me to write "In my opinion" in front of my obviously subjective statement, but I'll be more accommodating in the future.
One of my friends argue that Pam is actually the main character of the show. A lot of people think it’s Jim or Michael, but she gets the last word in the show and the show looks at her personally more than any other characters.
It's because Brian the boom guy had a very thinly veiled thing for Pam. That's why. It isn't some glaring omission or aspect of the show that got overlooked. It started the (thankfully) brief and meaningless side arc with brian the boom guy. Why has this now become a meme 6 years after the show ended?
I feel like our society has so much to embraced being unique and “not normal” that being unique IS the new normal. But it’s okay to say, “ I am who I am. I AM normal. I AM like other girls. I’m still unique in my own way, but I’m also like other people- and I love that.”
you missed out the part where she starts feeling that her normalcy and her demand for a normal life is holding Jim back....that's why I feel that Jim kind of completes her...with his ambition and her contentment they kind of attempt at balancing each other's extremes.
I wouldn't say that Jim is ambitious. He never aimed to be the general manager like Dwight did and in the end he walked away from Athlead. The reason that Jim and Pam's relationship works is that they're both equally mediocre (not that there's anything wrong with being mediocre). If Jim really was ambitious, he should have stayed with Karen.
@@jeffzhou1475 I think Jim was passionate but didn't have the right place to invest it and turn it into ambition...and with Athlead he finds that place and you can see how his life becomes tenuous with Pam as he becomes ambitious...so if not ambition there is obviously the attitude that he didn't want to stay where he was...you see this in both Jim's and Pam's attitudes...Pam is reluctant to explore new avenues while Jim is constantly saying he wouldn't want to be doing what he is...
@@rohanabraham4903 If that's the case then Jim should have stayed with Karen, who is way more ambitious than Pam. Jim had many chances throughout the series to be more ambitious, but he never took the opportunity, even when Pam wasn't yet in the picture.
@@jeffzhou1475 there are times he exercises his ambition in the paper company - being promoted to co-manager, applying for the job at corporate, but he wasn't passionate about paper...it wasn't the right place...and he loved Pam, I always viewed Karen as a rebound. Especially after her confession at the beach Jim had shown signs of reconsideration...Jim isn't complacent and he repeatedly accepts that while Pam is, due to which she's repeatedly reluctant towards or dismissive of opportunities...
@@rohanabraham4903 What you're saying does't necessarily refute my point though. Sure, Jim may have been more ambitious than Pam, but that's not saying much considering that Pam is the most passive person in the whole show by a country mile. Compared to most of the other main characters(Dwight, Michael) Jim is pretty complacent. I mean even Darryl left Dunder Mifflin to pursue his dreams, breaking up with his girlfriend in the process.
I recently (like approximately 3 months ago) finished The Office (U.S.) for the first time. At first I didn't like nor did I dislike Pam Beesley. She was just there to me. As the series progressed, I honestly started to see more of myself in Pam, despite the fact that our sexes are completely different. I noticed that she was shy, timid, none confrontational and for the most part let a majority of the characters walk all over her. However, as the show went on. She became more outspoken, confrontational and strong. The major turning point for me. Not for Pam as a character but where I was 100% team Beesley. Was the episode where they all have those games at the beach and she straight-up asks all of them why they didn't go to her art show. I felt that. That brought me to tears. Also it helps that in the MBTI Pam is definitely a INFP. Which is what I am.
Jim and Pam are one of the only characters in television that arent constantly breaking up, bickering and also, they dont lose their personalities once they start dating or get married.
Jake and Amy from Brooklyn 99 are also a wonderful example. Plus their whole "will they won't they" never affected their previous relationships (they actually did try in their other relationships and didn't do what Jim did to any girl before Pam)
Another thing that’s cool to see in this show is how Pam starts off wearing no makeup, dull skin, sunken eyes, low confidence, ect. Once she ditches Roy and starts following her dreams, she’s glowing
Actually the whole point of the video is against that, isn't it? It's showing how she's an average person who is, perhaps wonderful for those of us who got to know her throughout the series and for the people close to her, but for others and not iconic by any means. But there's an honesty about her averageness, and she also found herself and became more assertive so.
That does kinda go against the whole idea of this video though. The whole idea is that we should be praising her and her character for her relatable normalcy, rather than raising her like so many others to impossible standards we could never hope of reaching.
I really like the episode where Michael goes to her art show to see her art and pictures and how the only other person to show up and see them are Oscar and his partner and oscar’s partner talks crap about her art and oscar tries to be more sympathetic to Pam and less harsh but just to be nice and then surprisingly Michael loves her art! Truly loves it and it shows since Michael is a terrible liar and pretty transparent and HE makes her day just with his compliments and enthusiasm. He believes in her and she is very much grateful for that and how HE sees that Pam really appreciates Dunder Mifflin at the end of the day unlike most in the office who would quickly take an offer somewhere else. Pam sticks to it even through all their shenanigans and again it shows when she quits to follow Michael to his new company.
Honestly, an essay on Micheal and Pam's friendship would be perfect. I cried when she showed up at the airport the day Micheal left. So touching how such a love can grow from a non-romantic relationship. Amazing.
i love michael and pam's relationship so much. i find it so interesting how there are so many different kinds of relationships woven in their bond. as the audience, you can't really tell if they have an older brother-younger sister relationship, father-daugther relationship, or even sometimes a slightly romantic relationship. as his receptionist, pam has a unique bond with michael in the sense that she knows who calls him, and who he talks to, and through that she understands him better as a person, leading to her being more sympathetic towards him.
I love Pam. I think 3 of her relationships are the best ones of the show: with Michael, with Dwight and with Jim. For me, she made those 3 characters more human and loveable. And I understand Brian... Maybe I fell a little bit in love with her too. Great video!
I liked Pam in the early seasons. I LOVED her in her coal walk moment and the seasons that followed. Her growth was so well written. smacking Michael was a long time coming.
Pam always symbolized to me the importance of being boring normal. All my life I was scared that I wouldn't be interesting enough for people to like me and I really struggled with trying to understand that people could like just normal boring people. But watching the office and seeing how Jim could love a normal person sooo much taught me that I don't have to lie to get people to like me and that one day a Jim could come into my life and love my boring self and just that.
Sawri M you never noticed it? It’s all I can focus on when watching The Office. I’ve never understood how Michael Scott is such a beloved character; there is barely an episode where he doesn’t harass someone
So.. when you say 'no one noticed' you're just saying "I never noticed". Essentially everyone noticed, because that's what the show was partially about was uncomfortable situations. We all were watching harassment in the form of an awkward drama. That was a major identity of The Office.
That's so annoying the show is supposed to be uncomfortable that's where the majority of the humor lies. It wasn't meant to be lots of damaging sexual harassment more like awkward and difficult situations.
God, after watching this it makes me realize how incredibly well written Pam is and how amazing her actress is to portray it all! I just LOVE the office so much, man! 😋🤣😊💜
That’s why Pam is my favorite character, because she’s incredibly sweet but also incredibly REAL. Her speech in the finale about hoping she can make a difference in some other woman’s life makes me misty.
I originally watched this show at like 20 single.. . Rewatching now at 31 married with kids.. . I love Pam more than ever. I relate to her so much it's crazy. ❤I love you beesley
Yeah, if anything, it was the shock of losing Pam that made Roy realize he needed to change and improve his ways instead of depending on her to take care of him.
I have Multiple Sclerosis and I got it at 17. I’m not average. I’m rare and weird. I am always trying to seem average. Being unique is actually really difficult. Love this video. Pam is what I want. If you’re average, don’t take it for granted.
Beca A. M. Marques absolutely!! Sooo much depth and character development, and really important themes and commentary! Hands down my favorite show. It feels like even the smallest details were done on purpose and for an important reason. I’ve seen each season multiple times and every time I watch it I notice something new or analyze something in a different way!
I think it's really telling how well-written and likable Pam is that I thought the last-minute marital problems were horribly rushed and over the top and *still* cried and hovered over my laptop like a housewife with a favorite tv drama when Jim made her cry over Cece's recital. Seeing her so sad was actually distressing to me.
Something I really like about Pam is that she's essentially the anti-manic pixie dream girl. She's not a writer's fantasy who waltzes into your life to make you feel more "alive" or to "complete" you. She's someone you'd actually know and befriend. Her "normalcy" is exactly what makes people like her because we all know a Pam Beesly in real life. She's the girl who sat next to you in class in high school, laughing along with you about the absurd things your teacher and classmates would do. The co-worker you commiserate with when your boss and co-workers get on your nerves. Her familiarity and commonality is what draws you in. Then you get to know her complexities and realize that everyone is more than meets the eye.
I love how Pam changes when she becomes a mother. She becomes much bolder and stops tolerating bullshit which I think is a wonderful motherhood character development!
Love Pam! That moment, the smile when Jim first asks her out on a date. If that doesn't light up your world just a little bit, something is wrong with you.
This was an amazing post and explained perfectly the arc of Pam B.H. who I think stands alone in the depiction of females on TV. It also explains why the haters are so critical of her because she doesnt act the way they feel she should and should always bend for others. I think most people struggle with self worth and confidence and Im so glad Pam stayed a real flawed character. I think Jenna F did such a great job in this role and made Pam such a relatable and vulnerable soul. All the trolls and haters cant change how important she was to the Office on so many levels. The writers did though and for that I am thankful!
Jim and Pam’s relationship reminded me so much of my own parents it was crazy! Especially in the later seasons with their marital problems. It helped me really understand how love and marriage worked and how stressful it was for my mother when my dad was making decisions for everyone and never consulting her. They have a much better and healthier relationship now thankfully, but it took both of them coming to terms with everything.
Looking at the art show scene with Oscar through this lens, i actually think he was being supportive in his own way. I mean, maybe he didn't greet Pam or.kick it with her, but he showed up and gave his honest opinion without being condescending. All he said was that those weren't Pam's strong points. With someone like Oscar, he's just pointing out what he sees as fact without bias.
Her normality~ her strength, her downfall, & her burden It would just make my ❤️ soar if someone out there saw this and she said to herself: Be strong, Trust yourself, Love yourself, Conquer your fears‼️
Like Ann Perkins, Liz Lemon and Monica Geller before her, Pam proves that every zany group of friends needs at least one sane person who balances out their quirks, and brings them back down to earth for the most part. Pam Beesley was, is and will always be an iconic queen! 👑💙
Pam's glow up was unreal as the show went on and I absolutely loved it. Pam actually embodies your "girl next door", that you would encounter in real life.
Pam’s character development is probably my favorite. The two best turning points for her character are the art show when Oscar said honesty and courage aren’t her strong suits, and then when Pam in the next episode (i think) tells the bartender that one of the beers was supposed to be a light beer. After that she only got more courageous a little bit at a time
Thank you for making this video. I've been told that my personality is like Pam but I've really understood why until I saw this video. I realized that we're alike in a lot of aspects. We're both soft spoken, caring, and we allow others to take advantage of that or not appreciate our efforts. Like Pam, I'm slowly learning to assert my needs and recognize my self worth.
This was one of the best videos I've watched regarding The Office and Pam's character. I really liked this analysis. Pam is such a great character -- I aspire to be like her (such as changing and being more assertive and confident), even if she is considered to be "too normal" compared to other television characters.
"Without caving to the temptation that almost all onscreen stories do to make life more exciting"- Can't help but think of the MURDER plot in Friday Night Lights Season 2
I only started watching the office two weeks ago and I cannot express how much I relate to Pam. I just left a relationship last year that was so similar to Pam’s relationship with Roy, and I’m learning to assert myself better slowly over time. I’ve had a boss so unbelievably like Micheal in which he spoke over me constantly and sexualised me and I’m also constantly drawing so I really see myself in her. She’s so human and well fleshed out and she gives me a lot of hope for finding my Jim and learning how to stand up for myself ❤️
The part where Pam says she’s afraid she is not enough for Jim hits me really hard every time. It’s my biggest insecurity in every relationship I’ve been in.
I love this exploration of Pam's personality and role in the office dynamic. The show does such a great job of developing her character; she arguably grows the most out of any character in the show. Her costumes throughout the show show her attempts to fight the inertia and normalcy mentioned in the video. At the beginning of the show, her typical daily outfit is her trademark cardigan paired with a simple button-down and pencil skirt. She doesn't deviate too much from this look throughout the show, but subtle changes show how she tries to experience more that life and the office have to offer. Her muted colors change to brighter and truer ones; her drab and pale earth-toned cardigans change to more vibrant colors of pinks, purples, and blues. In the finale, she still has her cardigan, showing that she has not fundamentally changed who she is, but her sequined choice shows that she is willing to take the risks that she wouldn't have in Season 1. Her curly hair, which is pulled partway back in her trademark barrette from Seasons 1-3 gradually makes way to more styled waves which she wears down more frequently for the remainder of the series. She wears a power blazer at significant points in the show when she is more assertive (her interview with Bob Odenkirk's real estate manager, her big sales pitch with Jim to nightclub owner Donna, her creation of her office administrator job, her confrontation when she learns Michael has been dating her mother). It's one of the simple ways that the show's creators subtly show her development and growth.
I related to Pam immensely. Her story arc in Seasons 2-3 was 1/3 of the things that pushed me to get out of a negative relationship. I’m much happier and outspoken now, I don’t know where I’d be if I hadn’t gotten out.
You should definitely watch it then. The first season can be a little hard to get through (even though there are only 6 episodes) but after that the show really picks up.
As a Pam, I loved this video. Watching her blossom and become confident and stand up for herself is by far the best part of the Office. I love Pam, I can relate to her on so many levels.

There were times when Jim took Pam and their children for granted.
Such a hard life when everyone compliments you all the time SUCH A HARD LIFE YOUR LADIES HAVE trust me you don’t want the flip side of the coin the guys life no one ever complimenting you or worse calling you gross
I'm still mad how almost no one went to her art show especially Jim! Only michael supported her and even bought one of her paintings
Honestly when micheal called it great and bought it I cried to fucking hard
I think Karen was being really controlling over Jim at that point, when she learnt he used to have a crush on her. I think Jim probably wanted to go to the art show but didn't want to annoy Karen
[some funny and unique name] I thought I was the only one 😭
Yes but then during the beach episode Pam got selective amnesia...she didn't acknowledge that Michael went to her art show much less bought one of her paintings. After she walked on the hot rocks she tells the office "none of you went to my art show" i dont know how she could have forgotten about Michael. She felt shitty that night and he made her feel better by showing up as a friend would do. So what the hell Beesly?! Michael went to your art show because he's the world's best boss! 😉

My absolute favourite Pam line of all time, so iconic!😍
Trina Q MMMMMILF!
@vis mylife I don't think she wanted Michael with her mother because Michael was not a good partner at the time and was extremely sexist to her most of her time working there.
@@kenzeeharmon4162 Which ended up being the truth. Michael became an absolute jerk and dumped Pam's mom on her birthday because she was old🤦🏾♀️
Briana Oliver well that’s sort of biased, it is known through Pam that Michael makes her mother extremely happy, even though he did act like a jerk when he broke up
I get high on the scenes of Pam's bursts of bold assertiveness. The show is set to a dull monotonous workplace backdrop and every time Pam speaks up positive change happens and it's so heartening to see.
same -- i love all those moments of self confidence, where she truly believes in herself and her own abilities.
i do hate how she forgot mike and oscar went to her art show
The dull monotony works perfectly for setting the pace for moments like those.
To be honest, Pam's new confidence and assertiveness she gained later in the series awoke something in me.
Often people hate on Pam for her borderline flirtatious friendship with Jim, while being engaged to Roy, but then they totally forgive Angela for sleeping with Dwight while being engaged to Andy, I don't understand this
Because the audience holds Pam to a higher standard. Although Angela acts the puritan, clearly Pam is the morally superior person.
@@jackpendleton1628 oh I never thought it that way. That's actually a very good point
Angela is perceived as kind of an asshole already
Because Pam feels like a real person, so people hold her up as such. But Angela feels more like a character, it’s way easier to forgive her.
Abdullah Ansari It’s like when the sweet, cute , semi popular girl is caught flirting with someone while in a relationship. Everyone is shocked, surprised and upset
Yet when the bitchy stuck up girl gets caught cheating, no one cares because well- she’s a bitch, people don’t perceive her as a good person.
When Jim and Pam had marital problems it actually hurt. What great actors that they would have me concerned for them as a family.
Im so glad someone agreed with me I still cant watch those episodes
i low key cried when they argued in the phone
I felt like pam was being a bit on the selfish side..and was too afraid to move past dundermifflin
It was relatable. I cried
@@jb6574 I think it's more fear than selfishness. It's understandable to fear security as a mother (a working one, at that)
one of the Pam scenes that touches me the most is when she's still engaged to Roy. earlier in the episode, she talked about how she wanted a house with a terrace when she grew up. during the episode she decides to pursue an artistic opportunity, and we see her arguing about it with Roy. and then she gives an interview portion where she's talking about how its unrealistic to want a house with a terrace, how they don't even have that kind of house in Pennsylvania, and she starts crying. even though shes talking about how she wont live in a house like that, its clear that she's thinking about how she wont become an artist, its unrealistic for her to pursue her dreams, because this is what Roy has made her believe. idk man but that scene always makes me tear up. shes so good and sweet and it sucks that she didn't have a boyfriend who supported her aspirations. go live in that house with a terrace, pam!
Yes!! i was so heartbroken and shocked for her... like they might not have those in pennsylvania but other states might or you can built one ??? its like... she couldnt fathom having what she wanted even in her imagination.
@@Theresalwaysmoneyin and don't forget that she failed she art class and then gave up because of him.
A lot of fans began to hate Pam when she became more assertive. It spoke volumes of how people (not just men) see women. I’m so happy they grew her character that way.
Very true.. I am happy there are writers who can see in frame
I hated her until she became assertive :P
TheSuperNats yeah it’s always a red flag to me when people dislike her later character
It's a nasty two-headed axe. Both people who see assertive women as "bitches" and those who are apathetic and want a character who seems to suggest it's okay.
Why would people hate "Assertive Pam"?
One of the best Office examinations I've ever seen. I would say Pam slowly stole the show from Jim as the years went on. They really dug into her character, while I feel Jim's internal journey was largely invisible to us. I'd love to see one about Micheal and Jan's horrifying relationship, or Dwight and Angela's unusual path to love. Bravo, guys.
dwight was always to me the main character then michael...i could care less about pam or jim
Pam was, and still is today, an after thought for me. I never think about her 2 minutes after finishing an episode.
@@daver1161 I could see that. I don't think most men can relate to the internal problems of an insecure woman anyway. I think all psychological struggles are relevant. And, according to the likes my post has, it seems like most people agree that Pam's story was good.

damn that part about how the office treated Pam was kinda depressing
I likes it
Yes, I hated that Pam was so underappreciated at the beginning of the show, but as it progressed, she fell in love with Jim, and grew a whole lot more confident and assertive in herself. 😊
That is how women are treated in many workplaces. It’s uncomfortable to watch because it’s honest
@@ginao6810 i agree
Trina Q yeah, and she became confident enough to lie about a position. Great morals!
Pam is definitely not normal, she can type 90 wpm! That’s insane!
lmao that shit takes work. I try to practice my typing regularly to keep up at my job but it has taken me years to get to 90 and thats without punctuation and grammar lol
lmao what i can type 105 wpm!
she's kind of a legend
Buttrape Bill
Some typing tests are based on simple words or phrases rather than sentences or paragraphs.
One of my favorite episodes was the one where Pam brought lice into the office. Pam had to put up with everyone's crap.
the kids were definitely a plot device as much as in Friends, which is fine, there are already many characters and kids actors are expensive and there are a lot of restrictions
MyssBlewm
You mean the office needed to put up with her crap.
And I think that makes her stand out :-)
she was nicer then jim

@@aerialrose What's wrong with being ordinary?
beautifully summed up. Thank you
@Buttrape Bill most people have something significant about them, like being a great guitarist, or an artist, or being the really smart, really funny, really quiet or really annoying one but some people just don't have that distinguishable quality and that's what makes them so 'ordinary'. so no, 90% of people aren't ordinary, even if they're not a movie star.
@Dino Nuggets LOL
Sophia Brown i loved this wow
i love how when pam starts crying the boom mic guy came to talk to her but when people are floating down rivers or casually talks about crimes they’ve been in they just sit there 😂😂
camera crew when creed talks about the crimes he committed: yall hear sumthin
Or when an old Alzheimer man is lost, and wondering around.
Boom Op isn't SUPPOSED to step in like that of course, but since they're in the home stretch he figures, "Screw it."
I also don't remember if it's stated how long that Boom Op has been employed. It's normal for crew to shift around, especially since they were shooting for nine freaking years.
(Also, obviously, he had a crush on her, so there's that.)
Lol when Michael and Dwight drove into the- I can't even type it🤣😂🤭🤤😁
Anyone saying that Pam became too “bitchy” or “selfish” in the later seasons is extremely hypocritical.
Dwight and michael do shitty things, but theyre seen as bad people on the show for the most part
Also Pam did big decisions before asking Jim too so thats completely irrelevant
Ryan Comeau
Pam is one of my favorite characters:)
She really is a good person inside, you could just tell within the first episode. I’m glad she got out of her shell, she so deserves it:)
Ryan Comeau i agree. i never disliked pam
It makes me sad when I hear that because I really think it's indicative of our culture's issues with women asserting themselves. You can be a bitch trope or a girl-next-door one, but there is nothing for you in between. There are times when Pam is wrong or flawed, but I never saw her be a bitch. Get real people.
I just found her annoying in later seasons. Lol
@@johnwalker1058 "At least many of those same people fail to take into account how Pam was gaining those traits, but that it takes time for people to change qualities about themselves in the quest of self-improvement and the lifelong journey of perpetual growth and development toward better and better states of being."
>>> I couldn't have said it better myself.
@Raquel
Honestly, I don't see how people blame Pam in season 9.

*IT'S ART!*
It is a very real version of many people in Pam's position,
So true!!! I think this is part of what makes people love the office and what will cause it to remain relevant for decades to come!
I would say the mural was a big undertaking and showing that period of her change and accepting the new, unknown future.

I agree. There needs to be more humility. Passive doesn't have to be a bad thing. But those Western values keep popping up cause screw empathy.
I think the other characters also became more considerate, but this was about Pam's internal arc
Because we can’t control others but we can control ourselves.

She needed to see that Jim also valued her above his own interests and proving it to her gave her the courage to start a new chapter with him.
how'd she give up on her graphic design dream. she left Jim for like 3 months realized she wasn't good at it in the end
Pam failed an art school. Boom! Roasted

😂 literally never thought of that before
Probably because of her likability
It's because Brian the boom guy had a very thinly veiled thing for Pam. That's why.
It isn't some glaring omission or aspect of the show that got overlooked. It started the (thankfully) brief and meaningless side arc with brian the boom guy.
Why has this now become a meme 6 years after the show ended?
MetalSandman999 yes I am aware.

This not only gave me a new appreciation for Pam, it made me realize some things about my own life. Fantastic video, thank you so much.

Jim and Pam are one of the only characters in television that arent constantly breaking up, bickering and also, they dont lose their personalities once they start dating or get married.

pam is the heart and soul of the office, she keeps the show grounded. and i love her for that.
Pam is the most empathetic character in the office. She's so incredibly kind, and reaches out to everyone to help them.
Another thing that’s cool to see in this show is how Pam starts off wearing no makeup, dull skin, sunken eyes, low confidence, ect. Once she ditches Roy and starts following her dreams, she’s glowing
You should rename this video with this title. "WHY PAM BEESLY IS A WONDERFUL AND ICONIC QUEEN."
*PAMELA BEESLY HALPERT*
Nah. This title... suits her.
I totaly agree!!!!!!!!! she is my favorite charachter!!!
"Pam is not cool"

I loved Michael in that moment. I loved Michael in a lot of moments, but that scene especially 😌

That's so true about women carrying a lot of emotional burdens, often unseen.

Like Ann Perkins, Liz Lemon and Monica Geller before her, Pam proves that every zany group of friends needs at least one sane person who balances out their quirks, and brings them back down to earth for the most part. Pam Beesley was, is and will always be an iconic queen! 👑💙
Wow Monica Geller ?! Sane ?!
ann is so underrated! i love the normal character in any show; it makes them feel like a stand-in for us in the audience :)
Louis-Stéphane LOBE LOBAS we dont talk about later seasons Monica, the writers really did her dirty
you´re actually the first person i've seen correctly explain why pam gets so much hat. thank u for this video
Pam is 100% a Hufflepuff no doubt in my mind
I love taking a break from the office and coming back in a couple years and falling in love with Pam all over again:)
So beautifully done! Great job. Pam is indeed the best represented character of a normal woman with ups and downs. Who needs time to grow and learn.
I love Pam so much :{ her character development has actually helped me grow myself
This was one of the best videos I've watched regarding The Office and Pam's character. I really liked this analysis. Pam is such a great character -- I aspire to be like her (such as changing and being more assertive and confident), even if she is considered to be "too normal" compared to other television characters.
"Without caving to the temptation that almost all onscreen stories do to make life more exciting"-
Can't help but think of the MURDER plot in Friday Night Lights Season 2
i saw friday night lights and dont even remeber it
I only started watching the office two weeks ago and I cannot express how much I relate to Pam.
Yet she destroyed Jim's dream in the final season.
I dont even watch The Office but this video is amazing and super relatable🙌🏾
Well do watch it. It was somehow a life changing experience for a lot of people I know.
You should definitely watch it then. The first season can be a little hard to get through (even though there are only 6 episodes) but after that the show really picks up.
.
One of my favourite Pam moment is when she mimics Will Ferrel's juggling in the break room.
Pam has a voice that makes me feel like I'm in a meadow filled with roses and sunshine
As a Pam, I loved this video. Watching her blossom and become confident and stand up for herself is by far the best part of the Office. I love Pam, I can relate to her on so many levels.
