Do you transcribe before or after your solos?

Depends, in this case it was more like an etude so I was playing around on the tune but eventually came up with and composed melodic sections. Played it enough to memorize it and have it feel good, then wrote it out on the computer. The Autumn Leaves Etude from the previous week is the same case. Exercise that helps me realize ideas that are maybe just out of grasp aurally or technically in real time. After a while those phrases start to come out in real time though. The Lullaby of the Leaves I posted a few weeks earlier that's the opposite-I just hit record and played, nothing predetermined. Hopefully after a while the line is blurred between the two approaches. Maybe it was Mingus I forget who said "the best improvisations sound like compositions, and the best compositions sound like improvisations." Riding that line where things have a logical structure but breathe and are alive sounding, that's a great place to be.

@@JeffDinglerBass Totally agree practicing the ideas and eventually when soloing live it all comes out. Jaco composed his solo on 'Used To Be a Cha Cha' and sight read it on the album.

@@craigs19721972 Yes exactly! I actually heard that too from a teacher years ago, that some of those Jaco classic solos we all love were worked out (perhaps partially sometimes) ahead of time. Doesn't take anything away from them, they are incredible, and have that alive feeling, and the thing is he could basically improvise just like that too, so what's the difference?

@@JeffDinglerBass No difference in any situation. As long you can improvise on the spot is the key😊
