  • You can use the metronome on a slow setting, to give you just enough information to keep you in check, but not so much that you aren't keeping time on your own. Playing melodies or soloing is a great way to test this skill because of all the rhythms and space you have available. A slow metronome click can be thought of as a downbeat or downbeat to a group of measures. Notice that in my solo, I'm not necessarily playing the downbeat always. A phrase can easily start on beat 2 or the "and" of one in this drill. The importance is that you are hearing the downbeat and playing accordingly.
