Man.. Sandoval really knows how to pick his players. Jesus Christ! Each and every single one of them are extremely talented, regardless of how little/big fame they have!
Yo Saxologic!!
Mabye he will pick you one day ;)
Play the Mario kart lik now
They are incredible!
@@romanmohylevyts Yes I vote for Saxologic to play with Arturo.
The pianist has a stunning Jazz swing feel.
I fully agree.
+Björn Westerstrand Me too.
Me 3/4.
Dihelson Mendonca kind of reminds me a bit of Harry Connick Jr.
@@bjornwesterstrand909 me too also
the pianists response to the lick at 3:59 is the best part of the whole song
I have a theory, after listening to Zane non-stop that's a phrase he uses a lot. He plays a whole lot with Mahesh, I can see Mahesh knowing exactly when Zane is gonna use it.
Mario Minaya I have been thinking of how he do it during 2 years!! And you just solve it! I does really make sense!! Hahaha thanks!
Yep, so quick and hip.

@@dissonant__ I just wanted to post the same! I like his piano comping in the trumpet solo. always finding the right spot to comp!
4:32 Arturo's face says it all. RIP Zane Musa! There truly will never be another you.
I was just about to comment about his face xD

There will never be another Zane Musa
Zane Musa snapped me out of my usual bebop and swing sound I dig. Dig, old fashioned hip, Zane's totally original style; style that's original just like the Hines, Waller, Tatum, Monk, Hancock, Brubeck, Corea, and very few others on the keys are originals. Zane, you're a true artist. Jazz: that's my breakfast, lunch, supper, and in between.
I neglected to mention my all time favorite pianist, Erroll Garner. High five and total respect. RIP Mr. Garner.
That's really sad. I read your comment and expected some million year old guy.
I'll be a million probably before you, 15 y/o in 1973; my currently displayed pic. Still, what's your beef about guys with serious talent and a multitude of years of practice that know how to really play their instruments.
jeff Craven he isn't talking to you. He didn't know who Zane musa was and thought that he was some irrelevant old guy until he google searched who he was, and realized it was the young saxophonist
I never wanted that piano solo to end...
Digby Lovatt thats my uncle
+Stop and look around Son Thats actually my dog

+sadisuto I'm serious though he actually is my uncle.
@@stopandlookaroundson1809 low key can you hook me up wiht him for lessons
So sad to hear that Sax player Zane Musa passed away. He was truly talented.
Bill Griggs So it wouldn't be sad if he wasn't talented?
+filipinOH! LOL
Wouldn't you like me like to draw Zane out of his grave and say, "Play it again Sam". RIP Zane, still I have faith in young musicians of today who will LOVE this music.
filipinOH! No it wouldn't. I'd be pretty glad.
It was sad because he had so much more left to contribute. But his career sadly ended early, before he was able to become another musical icon of Jazz.
Arturo could not play like this years back. This is why I respect him so much, he is never afraid to keep improving in other areas. His sound and linear concept here are streets ahead of what they used to be. I think many a seasoned jazz musician would fail a blindfold test on his playing here. Just beautiful.
Agreed. Good point.
Very accurate…I was fooled…I’d have guessed K Durham in first couple of Chr s except recording quality reflects 21 st cent
Although I'd agree that his tone and approach here is different than on most of his recordings, he has definitely been capable of playing like this since before he came to the mainland. He is a master of countless trumpet styles; his 2004 "Trumpet Evolution" release demonstrated that. He, like most of the masters, plays however he chooses to play. I've attended many of his live concerts during the last 3 decades, and his versatility and virtuosity are even more on display on those occasions than when you hear him on records.
In short, this recording would certainly fool many as to who is playing horn, but he could definitely play like this "years back."
@@MaelstromD3 That's fair. Perhaps saying "he would have been less likely to play like this years back" would have been a better choice of words.
@@ouruhuru agreed. I think when he 1st arrived here in the states, he was determined to "outplay" all other musicians, especially other trumpeters. In my opinion, this is why he often got into these high-note battles with other horn players; because very few could compete with him in that range. It was like he was competing with them more than having a pure focus on the art of playing great music. In contrast, this clip shows him truly playing the music with the most artful and utmost integrity. It is also a delight to see him enjoying the other solos so much.
I love arturo's licks. Especially the one at 4:31
Bro that's a good joke😂
O h M y G o d lol
lmao
But.... that’s not.......
Wait how did this get so many likes.
talk about paying attention -- check Mahesh's answer to Zane at 4:00 -- he's a unique player - a little bit of Evans, Brubeck and his own sound. He has a great future.
Would have never noticed that without your comment. Thanks.
2;04 answer also sounds great.
Thanks for that comment i didnt notice that as well.
Mahesh's Brubeck blew me away ...wasn't ready for that.
Doug Skinner ..Yes, he's been listening to Brubeck and he does have a great future (I hope) -- I thought Zane also had a fantastic future -- that was a real tragedy -- that fatal accident he had in Florida. That still bothers me I didn't even know the guy -- to lose a great talent like that is downright depressing. He was an "LA" boy and I'm partial to that crowd since I'm from there myself. If there's a Heaven (and I think there is) he's entertaining lots of people right now.
I come back to this video whenever I need to smile.
Thanks for watching!
Most definitely!
A consummate joy!
me too.
Amazing sax solo, but also did you hear the pianist's incredible instant imitation of the last few notes at 4:00? That's what I call jazz: musicians so in tune with each other creating fantastic music
Dude yes, omg. I just realized about that in my like 300 listened and i got really amazed
Rory Doug
2:00 - 2:06 ;)
Hmmm not quite as good as the one I first mentioned, but good that you heard it, I didn't hear that one first cos it wasn't as clear haha
Caught that one too. Fantastic group -- all great musicians, all in sync with each other, and apparently having a really good time. Jazz at its best.
R.I.P Zane Musa...this is devastating news...THe musical world just lost one of the best and brightest sax players. You will be missed!
This video is really touching after the news of the accident. It's too bad.
i have never even heard of him until this recording its so unfortunate we lost this amazing player
Brady Helms Is he atheist or something?. Popular guys allways die when thei talk in public about their misbeliefs.
His name suggests that he was a muslim ( or had muslim parents). People from that faith often believe in God but arent devout. My opinion is that he was suffering in silence. I pray that he finds the peace he was craving. RIP Zane
I don't like his personal behaiviour. I strongly disliked when he played with gilespie, better than the quite old man gilespie, making he feel bad in public. Anyway, he is quite "imposible" trumpet player. A monster. Don't pray, budy. There ain't no god whatsoever.
That piano lick in response of the trumpet at 4:00 OMG
***** LOL, wtf was i thinking
Lol I noticed that too
Viva Nihon! Sax*
The piano player is absolutely unbelievable!
Zane Musa's solo is simultaneously the cleanest and dirtiest solo I've ever heard and I'm absolutely here for it
I always come back to this video just to hear Zane's beautiful solo. RIP
The rhythm section lining up with zane at 4:14 is the best part of this session it brings happiness to my heart
Most don’t ever hear that!
@@jont7756 4:42 is almost more subtle
“We-start-playing-okay! 1...2.1.2.3.4”
Dear lord you’d better be ready.
Arturo is great, but Zane... wow
Players like arturo and Maynard where so well known for screaming and their tone, but that transfers to almost nothing else. I feel bad for the wonderful sax players, no matter how well they play I feel like the trumpet audience will be bigger. Oh well i guess.
Hank Saspitatar RIP all the trombonists in the corner
I know this comment is super old and you dont take requests but man i would love it if you did a cover of a song that has this feel. I dont care what game its from but I need to hear you play a soft laid back swing
rip zane musa
brubeck played piano my man you're looking for paul desmond
Arturo has already worked with Michael Brecker (in his prime times) several times, so he has a great eye for choosing a Sax player. Zane Musa... A very sad person. He never won a monk competition, and he wasn't a famous player in New York, home of jazz, but he could be the best. He did a really great performance. In terms of jazz linguistics, he was a completed musician, so there was nothing more to learn, and in terms of energy, he worked with Arturo, who was the most energetic jazz musician, so the only thing left to do was to succeed.. R.I.P
5:36 almost played "the lick" and tried to get out of it without getting noticed
Haha
I definitely lold at that
He’s quoting the one note samba
*before the recording* "Hey arturo, you want a flugelhorn?" "Nah ill just use my magic trumpet powers and sound almost mellower than a fluge"
Danny Qwefer
Fucking true af
Was listening to this in the background while working, genuinely thought he was playing a flugelhorn. Arturo is unreal!
It's the mustache ;)

Thought about Sandoval as of being too technically-biased with lack of purely musical approach. But here he is doing one of best melodic solo I ever heard. And others members of the band are so creative.
Can`t stop hearing this.
If somebody played with Dizzy a lot, you don't think about them like that my friend.
the way i think of music is that music is all about telling a story. if you have the best story in your heart but not the ability to communicate it properly, then how would one know that your story is worth listening to. that's why technical work-outs are so important. I work on my technicality so i don't let it hinder my Musicality. like learning a language. learning the alphabet and "the dog is happy" or "there goes spot" leads to being able to tell a story
Yoshinori76 people express them selves through music to
joesell leta right. the story that I want to tell is my expression.
If you think he is too "technically-biased", check out this video, where he is playing "Smoke gets in your eyes" - on the piano! I have never heard a more touching version of this tune. ua-cam.com/video/HuUKmf3SBKw/v-deo.html
Anyone came in 2020 just to hear how beautiful that horn sounds?

Mahesh on the keys.... AMAZING ideas he has.. so lush! his touch is so delicate!!!
That one moment at 4:31, when Arturo is like "dayum son!" 😂😂😂👍 That guy earned the respect of a master that day.
Zane’s line at 3:07 is so wonderful and I’m gonna start using it
Dude, I got goosebumps, when I heard it! Playing around with the melody like that always results in a nice lick. Definitely going in my repertoire too.
This is one of those "first two seconds like" videos
By God... The tenor sax player's skill is sublime! Who is this god amongst the men? ??
His name is Zane Musa. If you're ever in LA you should definitely look him up. He brings down the house
one step ahead of that...i've befriended him on FB. This guy is seriously underrated. His technique is flawless and don't get me started on his tone...
RIP :(
really bro ? he's sad
@@donavanaustin7613 lol okay
i love how the piano player just has iReal Pro open on his phone

Every time I hear this song, I feel like I owe it to Zane Musa to play it for him. I didn't even know the guy and I tear up when I hear this recording...he was something special and I wish I could've had the opportunity to meet such a fantastic musician with such a bright future ahead of him. RIP my friend.
The pianist is amazing at playing complementary riffs and rhythms to both Zane and Arturo. It's quite impressive...
This tone is absolutely stunning as a trumpet player I couldn’t even believe how he could play so nice and velvety this is the only time i’ve ever heard a trumpet sound like this
He’s one of the very few trumpet players that can actually change his sound conception on the same trumpet and mouthpiece… there is a video somewhere on here where he plays 4 or 5 different styles and sounds one after the other.
This must be one of the best versions of "There will never be another you" all time. Amazing in all aspects. All the musicians are fare out!
They should have given the bass player a solo, too!! Man, if the guy was as talented and knowledgeable as the other soloists, he could have played a great solo. Some of the early jazz bass solos are so clever and tasteful and I can really jam out with those.
4:33 I love that expression. He’s total focused on what he’s hearing
That is one of my favorite Sax solos ever.
As a Cuban guitarist l have always been familiar with Arturo's work, top of the game on trumpet, piano and one of the best music sight readers ever. This ensemble is out of this world. Hats off maestros!! Greetings from Havana.
Did anybody else hear the piano soloist play birks works by dizzy Gillespie at 6:25?
+Hugo Carreon yeah he also slipped some half nelson by miles in around that area too
+Hugo Carreon And he also refers to "One note samba" at 5:37...
Plenty of "One note samba" quotes in other solos too, hehe. Just kidding. Nice catch. ;)
Best part of the performance
I’ve played this video like 38 times now and I still don’t get tired of it.
Sandoval is one of the greatest Trumpeters ever lived.
When he missed that A above the staff right at 2:20, I was reminded that he is still a human being.
RIP Zane. You gave me one of the most enjoyable solos I've heard.
No screaming high notes from the trumpet. No farting low notes from the tenor sax. Just all in balance, sensational musicality, great swing ... I am astonished and privileged to hear this.
Man, that sax blew me away. There's so much joy in his sound, and he's got swing!
my god this is swing is supposed to be. Arturo you are one of the best of all time. I wish I could play like you one of the kings. straight down from king oliver!!
To Alex Villa. He didn't "mess up" at 7:30, he was dropping a slow valve in a faster time signature: it's hard to catch it: but, listen again. a cool trick that "sachmo" (Louis Armstrong) came up with.
Lovely tone and improvisation. This gentleman has got my vote.
There will never be another Zane Musa ;(
Listened to this songs just about everyday for about 7 years ... bravo still
As a student of Jazz, it blows my mind how you can do those double time 16th note runs like that
Memorize small 4-8 note patterns in a few keys and connect them
Now that's my type of tenor sax tone!
Beautiful. Thank you for posting.
Literally applauded, alone in my room, when the video finished. Beautiful.
3:20 the greatest jazz lick ive ever heard.
haha, just came over this recording and probably listened to it 20 times now and it just keeps getting better and more interesting the more i listen to it :D amazing musicianship, phrasing and lines...and Zane...mindblowing!
Totally amazing players! Thanks for sharing.
Great solos by all, especially Sandoval. Very Chet Baker-esque. love the cigar logo sticker on his trumpet!
Marvelous! Nice to see Arturo take it down a notch...
Insane piano solo!
Amazing playing. Can't get enough of this. :)

Nice set work ..Love this song...
I think this is one of the best and melodic solos i’ve heard from Sandoval.
Great tune... and great playing! This made me learn the tune. I keep hearing more and more cool stuff in this. Thank you!
This is, up to this date, one of my favorite things to listen and watch, ever.
7:30 That "wrong" note Arturo plays feels so right!
Awesome to see great music like this getting out there on UA-cam!
This made me smile wide !!! 4 geniuses of the human kind !!

Extremely disappointed to lose Zane -- what a great talent he was (and an LA boy, at that). Also -- very impressed with Mahesh... that guy's goin' places...
Oh good lord, just beautiful stuff.
Crazily incredible. Virtuoso them all
