  • Uncertainty is hard to live with. And the stress and fear that often accompany it can be demanding . . .
. . . especially when it comes to the nervous system.
That’s why we reached out to Deb Dana, LCSW to get her perspective on how clients can calm the nervous system when they’re feeling stressed, anxious, or alone.
She shares a strategy that can help clients reconnect to their more curious, compassionate self even when they’re feeling anything but.
In the video, Deb mentions “ventral regulation.” According to Deb there are three states of the nervous system, and in ventral people are feeling safe and connected.

It's a great video. The connection planning is so straightforward and helpful. It might be good to find some synonyms for ventral vagal, like maybe "safely connected," for those less familiar with Polyvagal Theory.

Hi Rachel, I did not know what ventral vagal means, so your explanation is very helpful. Thank you very much! Kind regards from Amsterdam :)

Deb-what a gift you’ve provided here. I am very grateful. you’ve helped me see that asking my neurodiverse clients to be curious and experiment with what works best for them vs what they think they “should” do ..is an almost impossibly heavy lift to ask -especially without understanding how the dorsal-ventral loop makes this impossible. You make the most pragmatic case beautifully for WHY it’s essential to consciously nurture presence and curiosity WHEN they are here! 🙏🙏

It is strange how the things you need suddenly show up when you need them. I was in this weird sympathetic head-loop of feeling the need for a _"total somatic rebuild"_ (whatever that might be) and suddenly I realised from this talk that all that was needed is to _re-engage_ the ventral vagal. The thing is that we need to hang on to the piece of string that leads us back into it, so when we are not there we know that our life is full of meaning, chock-a-block, even when we cannot feel it instinctively. I don't know where such knowledge sits, the kind of knowledge that when recalled spreads a wave of warmth throughout the body. My intuition is that such knowledge is *spiritual* in the deepest sense of the term.

This is amazing! And intuitively what I’ve been thinking is happening in my nervous system right now. But I feel the opposite!! It’s like a spark was ignited on Monday during bodywork that hasn’t ever happened and now I can’t escape Ventral. What do I do with that?! Haha I know it’s GOOD!! So much complex trauma my entire life BUT I’m SO aware of my body and pain and getting weird twitches and nightmares and I’ve got to work and function during the day ya know? Any advise would be so welcomed!!!

This polyvagal theory makes great sense for use in this Covid-19 pandemic and for use with mental health disorders, and marriage and family therapy

Sorry but we need human connection-- not substituting a screen for human contact. I have found that the people who stayed physically connected to friends and family throughout this Covid craziness are fairing much better in everyway today.

No need to be sorry that we need human connection - that is a scientific fact. I'm confused as to the purpose of your comment - is it a criticism or just a general complaint? She clearly states what is good for some is not necessarily good for others. The state of COVID protocols isn't what this video is regulating, I don't think anyone is asking you to substitute a screen in this video at all.
