Meg doesn’t look like she’s struggling at all, she played exactly what that song called for and exactly what he wanted her to play. That’s why it sounded so primal and bad ass and she deserves some damn respect.
tim johnson Especially that one. I actually helped write that song with the White Stripes several years ago. It was a great experience for me as a song writer to sit down with them and just talk about music and youtube comments. I really learned a lot from Jack and I feel privileged to call him my friend after working several long hours into the night coming up with that hit single. I can barely walk down the street nowadays without someone saying "Oh look, that's that annoying guy from that song!" It's extremely flattering and every morning I wake up and happily remember that great experience. I'm surprised that you mentioned that song though since it was released on my solo album "Jacob Whinfield is Awesome." It's great to hear though that people are really delving into my work as an artist and learning even about the co-writers of my songs. So anyway, thank you for showing your support. If you are interested in tour dates, we will come to your home town tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow. Thanks to the comment giving support for the song, we will find out where you live and come play there tomorrow. We will use that song to close. It's going to be a great time, I'll see you soon!
Jack said in an interview that he decided he wanted Meg as his drummer, when she started to play along to him playing the guitar and he loved the raw nature she had when she played. He said he could never play so purely and as childlike as Meg so they started to jam.
Meg makes this whole thing,. In 40 years your going to have people studying her playing and saying how fucking on the ball she was..i really wish she felt ok about coming back out into the public eye and doing her thing,.to me she is perfectly beautiful and strong with it..wherever she is I hope she is happy and knows there are people who still have love for her and the cool music she made with jack!
White Striped Awww, a crying fanboy or girl. Can't even fathom a difference of opinion like any other whiny fansboys/girls. It's part of growing up. Learn how to not get offended over something so trivial. Saying, "that's what they're aiming for" doesn't excuse the fact that she's a terrible drummer.
It makes me laugh how people try to say white stripes would have been better with Jack as a guitarist and some other drummer. White Stripes are who they are because of Meg and Jack. If it happened any other way we would have never had the White Stripes. Plan and simple.
Could you honestly believe that The White Stripes would have sounded better if Meg was trying to be Neil Peart or something? They'd be nowhere near as good without Meg. She never needed to be flash, she kept time and hit hard, and she never compromised. No ego, no bullshit, and to me that's way more rock 'n' roll than some jack off playing unnecessary crap when it's never needed.
Well i'm amazed people! The fact that a band consisting of just two people can just utterly ROCK to that level is awesome. And Jack can play the shit out of that guitar! I'm in awe.
People can saw what they want about Meg, but in many performances Jack starts to improvise and she plays along with that improv really well. Not ever drummer would play along with that as well as she does. Not all drummers would want to even put up with it.
Royal Blood, Death from Above, The Black Keys and many other two-piece bands owe it all to Meg and Jack. They will always be the best originators of the style.
I love every thing Jack White does, but The White Stripes is my favorite of all his stuff, and that can only be because of Meg and the incredible report between them. She is Rock n' Roll!!!
Jack never seizes to amaze me. How the fuck does he do this? And Meg is great too, she's perfect for what the band represented. She just bangs away effortlessly. Without her, there wouldn't be a band so you should be grateful to her.
The White Stripes are one of my 3 or 4 all time favorite bands. Jack is an absolute musical genius, then with the enigmatic Meg on drums, it made for a very potent combination. Even with just the two of them they were still very entertaining live. I was very, very fortunate to see them play live in Milwaukee a couple of years before they broke up. I am very thankful for that believe me.
You won't believe how many times I've tried to play this song. This is one of my favorite white stripes songs and I haven't got it yet, but when I do, I will die and go to heaven cuz it will be so amazing!
Haha I just went to a raconteurs concert 2 days ago and Jack white still does that with the guitar when he leaves the stage. Leans it against the amp for the feedback and walks away, awesome!
Leila: all other comments are just noise. "His guitar is out of tune", 'She's a horrible drummer', 'He messed that part up" Noise. I'm of the opinion everything they did was as it was intended to be. They didn't use set lists, she had to keep up with him, they preferred old equipment, what people see as a mistake they see as a one of a kind event making it rare and valuable - she was an introvert playing in front of 100,000 festival goers live and ALL that sound came out of two people. They were an incredible team - and if people don't get them that's their loss. Jack added the band, the bass player, and 'professional drummers' - but nothing compares to the stripes.
You realize that is literally 100% of the point behind her drumming. The appearance of a brother and sister creating music themselves with instruments they found themselves.
Cheap and Easy lmao why are you all over the comment section trashing meg white? the stripes are supposed to sound this way, don't like it, don't listen.
I’m probably one of the minority who thinks Meg White made The White Stripes go! Yes, Jack is a talented guitarist, and was the heart of the band. However, Meg was definitely the soul of the band.
She is the definition of less is more...what she did was completely open White up and allow himself to be turned loose...her drumming is simplistic and naively pure...she doesn't know any better so it's impossible for her to mess up and not elevate Jack....this of course is pure genius by Jack White bc he knew all of this before anyone else did back around 1996
I don't know if this has already been said but this song could very easily be played with 2 guitars (mainly the beginning) but the fact that it's not makes it that much better and makes Jack even more of a legend.
Everyone is like "I love the drums" when they hear this one... like it's a surprise she's an amazing musician.. The simple riffs and beats was purpouseful. I must admit the first time I heard this one I was blown away... but I had a cream soda fetish at the time...
As a guitar player very new to guitar and even newer to learning songs by ear, I'm glad to see Jack using a whammy pedal for the higher notes in this song. It's really hard trying to play stuff on the 20th fret and whatnot.
The White Stripes are no doubt the greatest band of at least the last 25 years. They are the Led Zeppelin for this generation. Jack White is awesome and we can't discredit Meg White who is fantastc..In short, let me just say that they are untouchable.
I love how it was suddenly remembered after I think his nephew brought up the song when Jack and Meg performed at the Chicago Ballroom I belive around 2003 and i guess ended up making this little master piece.
There is no point discussing Meg, as there is no technically gifted drummer who can compliment jack's riff's...not to undermine many of the greatest drummers, Meg is a far cry from being talked about in the same league as many other drumming legends, but just imagine them legends strutting their stuff with jack on guitar. Imagine Buddy Rich at the kit with Jack. Buddy Rich is my idol, but I would never be able to swallow that pill......!!!!! It would sound perfect, and that would be the exact opposite of what Jack wants out of his music. The stripes together are not perfect and that is the one thing that's most appealing about them. Not one artist has his music "Not Processed" nowadays, and The Stripes are defying that notion. And Meg's drumming is the ultimate compliment to Jack's rough guitar licks. Jack leads Meg in the most imperfect way, and its PERFECT. Meg is one of the best - out of time drummers in the world.....!!!!! Nuff Said.....!!!!!
True. Her being not the most technical drummer in the world doesn't matter. It's not the music olympics, it's art. They are complementary and they sound fuckin' good, that's it.
Meg is as much a drummer as Denny Wilson is. She really is not a drummer in the sense that she is a good musician. She serves a purpose and that is to bang on the drums and try to keep time. If you ask her to play a 5 stroke roll or para diddle diddle she probably couldn't do it. But, she can keep good enough time (kinda) and add an important element to the song. That is extremely vital and should not be discounted. Could other drummer do it better? Probably, but it doesnt matter. She did it and did it well. That is all that matters
he came in the band because jack just like exactly this sort of style. he sat her on a drum one day and was blown away by the primal, unconventional style of playing, he build the entire band around that. i mean it should be obvious by just looking at the band and listening to them
This is amazing, for anyone to diss this wether that be for technical difficulty or quality of music, they must have the sound of an have scrolled down to the comments before actually watching it.
Meg's rythym is like the drummer of the system of a down, but hits way harder IMHO. I've been on a spree on White Stripes music lately now that I haven't been on other white white stripes haha, but this song is super unique + had to share my rage for Meg and Jack's skill to add to my thoughts
From 2:10 on it's obvious why Meg had to be the drummer. Note that this is not rehearsed. They are both feedling off of each other. The tempo goes down, then goes up, and they are making music together. Meg is very loose in this performance, grooving to the music and feeling the same energy as Jack. Textbooks don't apply when the music is played with this kind of feel.
People need to shut up about Meg. She isn't the most technical drummer yes, but for fans of garage rock music - being a great drummer isn't about technicality at all. She's minimalist and it is what defines the music as bluesy and raw. That's the whole point of the band. She's a perfect drummer in her element so stuff that in your pipe and smoke it!
I just bought a bass drum with the button pic on... I almost died when I saw it :D I was sooooo happy I was like yay I can be like Meg!!! hehehe I think the place I got it from was selling their own copy :) Anyway, great performance of this song. I agree, one of Meg's best performances. Jack is always awesome, obviously :D

Well then, I'm glad you've made that decision for us. I happen to like the Beatles and White Stripes, and think both of them have contributed vastly to the progression of modern music. Anyone who dismisses a band with 4 words knows nothing about music, really
some of the songs I play i use a smiler picking style to jack white and I often end up with bleeding fingers and blood splattered on my pickups but it sounds awesome so it's worth it
I meant INCREDIBLE DRUMMER! She brings me joy and positively elevates my mood. 2 of the most important attributes of art and musical communication. Mission accomplished.Walter White
@mrbanker80 nope, jsut stopped being a band. They only said they wouldn't record or peform anymore. Jack is still playing with the Raconteurs i guess. megg is (as far as i know) not playing anymore.. :'(
@aurlis2012 I agree, she does what she does very well and doesn't seem to feel the need to add flash with a huge kit that she barely touches like most rock drummers. Not to mention the timing connection between Meg and Jack is awesome, even when Jack gets all crazy and chaotic she keeps the whole thing on beat.
I honestly cannot think of anyone else playing the drums on this band, she just fits, that's it
Booommmmm. well stated
Meg greatest drummer of all time ⏲️
Who gives a fuc what anyone thinks. Jack likes her.
The most underrated song in the White Stripes catalogue- Mags drumming is also underrated especially in this song….
I love this song!
Agreed. He got so many sounds out of that old plastic Airline Guitar
Not many 2 piece bands can get a bass and rhythm sound. Jack White did it with an inexperienced drummer that struggled to keep up
Meg doesn’t look like she’s struggling at all, she played exactly what that song called for and exactly what he wanted her to play. That’s why it sounded so primal and bad ass and she deserves some damn respect.
@@jeffb8562she's not struggling at all shed been playing years by the time this video was recorded.
I honestly like every single one of the white stripes' songs

This comment just made my entire life.
I really like the song " Smooth Triston isn't actually smooth, just a big cuck " I know that was on a later album, but bravo

man, I don't care if it's sloppy, I don't care if it's muted. It's the fucking White Stripes.

It makes me laugh how people try to say white stripes would have been better with Jack as a guitarist and some other drummer. White Stripes are who they are because of Meg and Jack. If it happened any other way we would have never had the White Stripes. Plan and simple.

whatever makes u laugh .
Ahimen to that
If Jack White had four arms, he would've formed the Stripes himself
the fact that they never come on stage with a setlist amazes me.
She wasn't a drummer before The White Stripes. Jack didn't want her to learn to play like other drummers. This is how he wanted Meg to play.
THAT'S RIGHT AND LEFT.
Slippin' Jimmy he wanted her to play like trash
Interesting
@@danieldaniel4371 Yep, and she made millions while you're sitting here bitching about how bad she is.

You can definitely play simplistic drums for this music, but she seems to fail to grasp this song, or the transitions very well tbh
Jack knew. He knew better than anyone else.
One time I got baked. Then listened to this song for the first time. Life was never the same.
That riff drives me fuckin' bananas.
I totally agree it's SO RAW.

Sounds like it should be in a James Bond theme but it would be the most badass Bond theme ever.

the end of something special. thank you Jack and Meg for all the memories. I'm so thankful I had the chance to see them three times.

some of the songs I play i use a smiler picking style to jack white and I often end up with bleeding fingers and blood splattered on my pickups but it sounds awesome so it's worth it
Kick ass drummer!
whuuut
Michael Rivers ummmm, no
I meant INCREDIBLE DRUMMER! She brings me joy and positively elevates my mood. 2 of the most important attributes of art and musical communication. Mission accomplished.Walter White
Michael Rivers That's good that she makes you happy, but her skill as a drummer is not "incredible". Sorry, but it's true.
Let's call a spade a spade - she is crap on drums, period.
@mrbanker80
nope, jsut stopped being a band.
They only said they wouldn't record or peform anymore.
Jack is still playing with the Raconteurs i guess. megg is (as far as i know) not playing anymore.. :'(
Oh,my ears are very happy
@aurlis2012 I agree, she does what she does very well and doesn't seem to feel the need to add flash with a huge kit that she barely touches like most rock drummers.
Not to mention the timing connection between Meg and Jack is awesome, even when Jack gets all crazy and chaotic she keeps the whole thing on beat.
