- PJ Harvey - Dress - HD Live (V Festival 2003 - August 17th, 2003 - Hylands Park, Chelmsford, Essex, U.K.). Polly Jean Harvey, Rob Ellis, Mick Harvey.
Lyrics / Paroles :
Put on that dress
I'm going out dancing
Starting off red
Clean and sparkling he'll see me
Music playing make it dreamy for dancing
Must be a way that i can dress to please him
It's hard to walk in the dress, it's not easy
I'm spilling over like a heavy loaded fruit tree
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
It's sad to see
Lonely all this lonely
Close up my eyes
Dreamy dreamy music make it be alright
Music play make it good for romacing
Must be a way I can dress to please him
Swing and sway everything'll alright
But it's feeling so damn tight tonight
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
"You purdy thang,"
My man says, "But I bought you beautiful dresses."
"You purdy thang,"
My man says, "But I bought you beautiful dresses."
Filthy tight, the dress is filthy
I'm falling flat and my arms are empty
Clear the way better get it out of this room
A falling woman in dancing costume
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
Im seeing her live in September this year. Finally. This woman is on her own world!
She’s amazing live! Wish I could go once more. Enjoy!
Yes. At History Toronto tonight. Seeing her first time 🔥
Perflectly put.
This is my favourite PJ era. She leaned into her bangers, of which there are many
To be fair, the whole not wearing pants thing was fun too.
Love Polly Jean. She looks gorgeous in this clip. I love all the different styles of music and hair she comes up with. Mega talent
Well, how much more iconic could it get? Peejay, dress, boots, Firebird, Orange amps, gorgeous rhythm lords - a really great performance this is. I especially like that smirk towards the compadres at the end. True artistry.
Vox and a beautiful Gibson.
You forgot the most important one - that smile! And the eyebrow up😊
Very good comment!
My god, what a drummer!! Polly is amazing as well.
PJ Harvey is an absolute beast and is so talented! Probably one of the most beautiful people on earth too!
One of the best alternative acts around Hard to believe this is nearly 20 years old. This woman rocks
she has incredible energy and talent!!! and yes she ROCKS
And she is sexy as hell!
I think this band kicks out the jams
Yeah. And the song was released in 1993.
I saw PJ Harvey play five times in '92 and '93. "Dress" was one of the highlights of the mid-afternoon set (on the NME stage?) at Glastonbury '92.
I think pj Harvey is my favourite female performer of all time
Same, but remove the word female
emyl and the sniffers not so bad too
What a bad joke!
This will always be in my top 10. This song is perfection. And incidentally....that dress really worked as well.
She is stunning strong and powerful...and yes the best legs ever too.,and hats off to her drummer...he carries her power perfectly
The best performance of Dress ive personally heard. This lady oozes charisma 💔
I adore this woman. The menacing bass & drum is a vibe in itself. Rock on people. 🤘🎸🥁🎤🎶💞
You do know she is a s**t guitar player? Seemingly not.
@@tonebonetones Technical ability isn’t everything, mate.
She sucks
I was there. She was mesmerising. The whole band were fantastic. PJ Harvey was and always has been an incredible artist. 🙂

There is just something so special about this song...this performance... That drum beat...damn.
Rob Ellis (drummer) is a beast.
@@mixedmeter Yes!!!
Omg the RAW POWER of this music. Putting on dresses!!! Wowzers! That solo…. She was all over the frets…. Sliding up that turkey neck. Wow she transcends generations!
Despite having been filmed 20yrs ago, this never gets old.
in fact it has to be recorded at least 20 years ago for you could say is never gets old.
Outstanding performance, love the way Rob Ellis drums and Polly's confidence and singing.
That drummer, superb work !
The drumming of Rob Ellis just lifts her music to another level. Such a good match.
She can kick Jack White's ass for copying her sound
It lifts her dress to a new level....
Many, many interesting drum parts.
the_katman Agree! Tremendous drumming.
So true
Holy Hell..this is already 20 years old now. "Time flies" as they say...unbelievable!
The song itself is even more than 30 years old now. Hard to comprehend.
It’s hard to take my eyes off of her but holy hell the drummer.... such a difficult flow AND he does backing vocals! Such an impressive live performance!
He's certainly working overtime.
Not to mention he's sitting right behind her. It's a miracle he manages to hit the drums at all.
@@xrinco7.65 Just a good 'work ethic' i guess.........................

Still loving PJ in 2020. Vixen beyond compare
Shut up.

Talent. Real talent. Real music. Adorable singer.
Polly has such a consistent glow to her. An amazing woman and amazing talent as well. Of course, her looks to boot. The band's music is cathartic.
@tecdessus Thanks for the response. I was careful in complementing her appearance because as an independent progressive, I am tired of the exploitative sexism that goes with the commercialism (To be fair though, that probably doesn't happen as much as it's believed to, but it's only invariably apt to happen with any patriarchal leanings that go with infrastructure as history can attest to it. I'm not trying to single anyone out, I'm just saying. I'm all for the facts anyway) of the industry and I didn't want any misapprehensions to arise or get lost in retranslations even. I meant everything sincerely. It seemed to me we as a species in the nineties hit the balance between making progress and without things becoming too "PC" to where something as simple as exchanging complements (I know there were many other things going on, but still) wasn't considered to be wrong. It's the other extreme. And those observes ironically become constraining to free speech of course and things like that. Then again, is any era really any different than its predecessors? Polly is extraordinary. Both her personality and good nature make her stand out. She's positively unlike so many other not just musicians, but people as well.
@@Chrisx005x Nice disclaimer, and I think it's acceptable to note her exceptional looks along with her solid talent. I like how you said her good looks to boot! Did you do that on purpose? You know, boots?
@@theobserver9131 No, it's just a figure of speech in the context of what grammar I decided to use in getting my thoughts across the comments section. I probably should've rendered it as well or included. No double entendres, puns or innuendos. I meant everything sincerely.
@@Chrisx005x she knows she is pretty and she knows how short her dress is
@@1Daveable Fair enough, but that doesn't mean that should be exploited as well unless it's in a sense agreed on in any form that may take and even then, I consider it uncalled for basically and so undermining to women's potential. It's frequently believed the idea is that women are innocuous, too emotional and such whereas men can handle anything and let's be real, if we men had to undergo a trillionth of the pain that women nobly endure, we'd fall by the wayside almost in every single instance. It's guaranteed. Has anyone ever had an epidural or given childbirth since most male species other than seahorses cannot by default to my knowledge with the mechanics of the biosphere other than the lone asexual variants or be treated as third class residents on a regular basis and not even complain about it as anyone ought to clamor for the outrages among so many other things? Men's perceived ironfisted toughness is effectively illusionary and there, I said it. I know men cannot stand to hear that 'cause they know it's true more or less. Honestly, I wish I had not said anything that led to any misinterpretations. Yes, Polly is genuinely a pretty woman, but I mean that in the best of ways as a proud fan and enthusiast. Her music, personality, contributions and what she actually stands for are wonderful to say the very least. While it's natural for women to be that way in many respects, the ways of going about it in many cases as I've stated are questionable at best and abysmal at worst especially when it falls into the wrong hands of patriarchal influences as history can often attest to it. And obviously I am a brazenly professed feminist, so I'll take any heat from detractors in stride implicitly. I've consistently got along much better with women in my time experientially speaking than men since I don't resonate with many conventionally based masculine interests and disinterests both other than an affinity for sports, but they're largely not the most stereotypically "manly" in the same token I guess one could say with the other premises. I've always been more compatible with girls. I never understood or concurred with the notions of why society expects to do in terms of both conforming and cohering to social conventions. I know this firsthand sadly originally hailing from the American South and have always been of a different caste apart from its cultural staples of being essentially an alpha breadwinner of which I've never seen the provisos of those prerogatives "having to be met."
This drumming... perfection
100%. Tight and punchy.
The drumming? Those LEGS !!!!"

Those first three albums aren't what they are without Rob Ellis.
Totally agree @@dahuka
Lot of comments, but if not mentioned that’s Mick Harvey playing bass guitar.
Longtime member and along with Nick Cave was responsible for the great music of The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
Was also in Crime and the City Solution, collaborations with Polly Jean and others. He’s a legend.
nice, didn't realise that, thank you!
This is 1st Video I have Seen of PJ Harvey - Great Looks, Band & Sound. Only heard of Her through Netflix "Peaky Blinders" Series and then Bought the 2 CD Soundtrack. Has some of Hers, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Radiohead. LookS like mostly UK groups to Me.
Really Enjoyed, What I've Heard !!
Quintessential excellent drumming, guitar and bass playing. All in one song.
Love me some PJ. She was epic around this time I remember seeing her at Hammersmith 04 and I think she did 5 or 6 encores. Smashed it.
PJ positively kicks ass. Saw her twice and both were incredible ❤
First time I have heard of her. UA-cam decided I needed to listen to her, and I am glad it did. Great performance and song! Her voice reminds me of Chrisse Hynde.
You are in for a treat, I envy you.
UA-cam has been very kind to you, my friend.
same for me, first song rid of me!
Welcome to the fold
Have you been living under a rock??
outstanding drummer knocks it out of the part, great guitar pj you look great, great singing combo ❤
This is so raw and straightforward with that satisfying rhythm section and the incomparable PJ Harvey on lead.
Oh my goodness, she is a good musician, but oh My, what LEGS! Beautiful!
love it! She's got Oomph!!! great stage presence, awesome vocals and fat powerchords! I am sold
Maybe not. These fat powerchords are actually Mick Harvey's bass.
Damn, how many times are we gonna watch this!
It's 2021 and PJ still fuggin' rocks for the ages, and that's truth!
Amazing ... beautiful and talented 😍
WOW, she's got it ROCKIN...they are tight. Whole lot of talent in that trio
Dang them legs run all the way to heaven. What a badass

You can say "she IS", because she's getting better and better.......His song "dollar dollar" monstruously good...2016, not so old song....
A grandiose explosive sound and a voice perfectly suited for the goddess of rock and rock today ! Yesterday we had Patti Smith today we have Paule Jean Harvey !
That’s a pretty grandiose statement! Comparing her to Patti! Although I must admit I can see the similarities.
Never heard of PJ Harvey. Saw them on the telly and was totally captivated. Couldn't switch it off. I'm in lurvv. What a very special woman and a very special musician.
Must take so much concentration to play the guitar AND deliver an awesome vocal!! Gorgeous and dignified woman showing so much talent and integrity. Such an inspiration ❤️
Also depends on the complexity of what you're playing while you're singing. Power chords are ok - complex rhythms or melodies are a whole different level. It's a matter of practice, too, of course. :)
The drums on this are next level 🙌🏼🥰
The drumming is okay...... I guess. But I don't listen to this type of music for technicalities only as pop music. I listen to other genres of music for technicalities and complexity

So much talent, so much charisma, and so beautiful ! And her legs !!!
The late JP always played PJ on his shows. He used to introduce her as Polly Harvey & it was always good to listen to her music.
The Damned's version of Fan Club on Peele's show is better than the studio version. Many bands sounded so great on his show.
Got to admit her lyrical prowess is impressive and love how she uses the vocal dynamics in her expressions to capture the listeners full attention!
that's the earmark of a professional writer/performer to understand her audience and make her edgy, somewhat uncomfortable lyrical content palatable and relatable!

Drumming on the off-beat and keeping this up takes some real skill and concentration. This is an epic performance from PJ's backing musicians. She's not bad either .....
This version rocks so much harder than the one on the album, excellent drumming. And of course, the legs are a nice bonus.
Yeah, it’s the combination of Polly’s Gibson + Mick Harvey’s heavier Jazz bass sound vs Polly’s Broadkaster and whoever played bass on the original recording. If it was Steve Vaughan, he often used a MusicMan, sometimes a fretless bass, and no pick. Plus the mix here is just really punchy.
