Oh man I recently heard this song again and it just blew me away... transported me to a simpler time when I was a kid growing up with two parents who loved The Police and Sting. It's a beautiful song. Really conjures nostalgia. Thanks for reacting to it!
This song is in the end credits of the Luc Besson film masterpiece Leon (The Professional) and there’s a great guitar bit at the end that is only on the end credits version. Such a beautiful song and an amazing film if you haven’t seen yet.
Vinnie Colaiuta on drums... the legend. Sting has worked with many great drummers. Stewart Copeland of course with The Police. Manu Katche on his first and possibly second solo album. All amazing.

This song is on the soundtrack of one of my favorite movies, "The Professional" (1994) starring a very young Natalie Portman! It's a great film! 💜💜
The drummer is *Vinnie Colaiuta,* an extraordinary session player. At the end, I believe what you thought was a violin was a harmonica, played by *Larry Adler.*
The song 'Shape Of My Heart', by renowned artist Sting, is a composition that delves into the depths of the human soul, using the metaphor of a card game to explore more complex themes such as the search for meaning and the true nature of being. The lyrics of the song suggest a reflection on the intentions and values that drive people's actions, going beyond appearances and material gains. At the beginning of the song, the narrator describes a player who is not interested in the money or the respect he could gain from the game, but rather seeks answers and understanding through the cards, which represent elements of life and destiny. The 'sacred geometry of chance' and the 'hidden law of a probable outcome' are expressions that evoke the idea that there are deeper patterns and meanings to be discovered in everyday experiences. The repetition of the lines 'I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier, I know that the clubs are weapons of war, I know that diamonds mean money for this art' reveals the narrator's knowledge of the traditional symbols associated with the cards, but he insists that 'that's not the shape of my heart', indicating that his essence and values do not align with these superficial representations. The song therefore invites the listener to look beyond what is tangible and consider what truly shapes a person's character and identity, suggesting that love and authenticity are the true guides to understanding the 'shape of someone's heart'.
Sting is a musical genius. One of the greatest lyricists & musicians of our times. The metaphors & the way he phrases things is incredible. Then of course theres his voice which is just heavenly. This tune was famously sampled by Juice WRLD for lucid dreams. Sting owns 85% of that smash hits royalties.
What?! I'm so jealous. I was about 10 feet away from him when he was in NY for the week (doing concerts and performing on Saturday Night Live in 1999) and rehearsing but I froze and couldn't say anything to him. Worst moment of my life.
Dominic Miller is the guitarist. In an interview of him and Sting, he said he was playing the guitar piece as a warm up, Sting heard it, then went away for awhile, came back with the song to go with it. It is very high on my list of favourites Sting songs. As I've done before on Sting videos, I'll recommend the song "Ghost Story". I also found today that James Blunt has a recent song for you to react to, "The girl that never was".
Excellent song! Out of all of Sting's masterpiece songs...this song is No.1 on my list from him. It makes me emotional every time I hear it. It is very very deep about our relationship in this life and Love. I played over a dozen times a year. Sting is definitely one of my all-time artist. I just love everything has does. Fantastic emotional reaction!!! The musicians who played on Sting's song "Shape of My Heart" include: Sting: The song's composer, lyricist, and producer, who also sang vocals Dominic Miller: The song's co-writer and guitarist Larry Adler: Played harmonica on the song........"Shape of My Heart" was released in 1993 as the fifth single from Sting's fourth solo album, Ten Summoner's Tales. The song has been sampled by many artists, including Sugababes, Craig David, Nas, and Monica.
This entire album was just a masterpiece. I love going back to it every once in a while and listening to the whole thing. I also really loved JuiceWRLD use of this song.
I think you’ll love the introspection of the song “Dead Man’s Boots” loosely based off his grossing up in a shipbuilding town shad his dad encouraging him to go into the business, which Sting didn’t want to do in favor of music.
That instrument was a harmonica, not a violin. A wonderfully wistful tune. Two terrific upbeat (funky!) numbers from this same album ("Ten Summoner's Tales") to check out sometime are "Heavy Cloud, No Rain" and "Epilogue (Nothin' 'Bout Me)."
Oh my God. I see myself in my car in the early 90s, aimless, lost in thoughts, heartbroken, with this song on repeat. For me, it symbolizes the melancholy and beauty of life at the same time. It feels like sadness and hope. And then Dominic Miller's guitar... it's not just the melody, the sequence of notes in the right time, it's the warmth of the sound that envelops you like a warm blanket in front of a fireplace.
First time I actually heard this song was when it plays out at the very end of the film Leon (incredible film btw) into the closing credits - was such a great fit for how the film finishes and even more haunting than when you listen to it as a stand alone. Its from his album Ten Summoner's Tales, which also features If I Ever Lose My Faith In You and Seven Days (with its rather amusing lyrics).
Is this the first time you've gone through nearly the entire song unable to pause and interrupt it? A great tribute to the hypnotic beauty of this song.
Feel pretty confident in saying the middle eight/instrumental bit main instrument were Uilleann Pipes, (like a more mournful version of bagpipes), which were cross faded in the editing when the song was mixed, into a harmonica part-so it would sound like one instrument when the song was played back. The main part throughout the song would likely have been a classical/nylon stringed guitar. And the bit at the end Amber asked about was again a harmonica.
Beautiful tune. It worked so well in during the credits of the movie The Professional. Be Still My Beating Heart is another of his great vibes like this.
I just got back from the Sting and Billy Joel concert in st. louis. They were both incredible. He did this song well, but i was really impressed by desert rose. somehow they managed to play that with just the bass, guitar and drums and still get all the little sounds and feel.
I loved Sting when he was with the Police and also saw him live when he went solo. He is incredible. He can sing complex melodies while playing superb bass grooves. Not easy.
My favourite Sting song! So glad you guys finally reacted to this! And Domonic Miller on the guitar is a legend. He had worked with Sting for decades now and is an important part of the music they've made. The Ten Summoner's Tales album is one of the best. But one day you guys will react to some of the songs from his Symphonicities album and you'll be blown away again by songs you've heard but that he rearranged with an orchestra - it's beautiful! Don't dismiss those versions just because you recognise the song titles - they bring a totally new experience to the songs.

As I have said before, there are artists that come along in a lifetime and touch you in a profound way. Sting is one of these many artists for me. His music, activism and even feminism have touched me in a way that is poetic. This song was during a very unique and passionate time in my life history. His music touches you in your soul. Amber, the instrument you thought was a violin is actually a harmonica and is played by the late great Larry Adler and boy did he make that thing sing, heartbreakingly beautiful and lifts an already brilliant song to another level
If you want to hear intimate Sting, then "Sister moon" by Sting is the song for you guys to check out. The last two Sting's songs that you reacted to are all on the same CD:" Ten Summoner's Tales" and I think that he used the same drummer on all the tracks. If I was stranded on a desert island for life, I would want two CDs with me: Marvin Gaye's "Let's get in on and Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales".
This song reminds me of Canada. I was driving in the Maritime Provinces in 1993, when this album came out. I had it on cassette. Listening in Nova Soscotia or NBW, or New'land -this song brings back memories. I saw Sting "live' in 1988, at my college in 1988, with his Jazz/Rock band -have been a fan of The Police for years. I am 55 years now. Even my Dad was a fan of Sting, as his name was also Gordon, I got my Dad into his music!
You always make fair reactions and I like that. And it is so clear in this reaction that he only focuses on the music and the instruments and does not capture the drama in the text at all. Whereas she captures the music, the text and the drama in the text, such as when Sting sings that the mask he wears now is only one of his masks, we clearly see in her that she is deep inside the text. That is the quality Sting has. He tells a story in his own way and he captures people's attention. Or almost everyone's attention 😉😉
This is my favourite song by any artist, and that's saying something, as there are so many songs by other artists I adore. It's hauntingly beautiful. As Amber says, it's also intimate. Maybe that's because Sting's voice is inherently sensual. The instrumentation is equally sensual and the lyrics are poetic. For me, a masterpiece ❤.
Dominic Miller, Sting's guitar player, has been in Sting's bands since The Soul Cages albums. While the rest of the band has turned over, Dominic is still up there: we saw a Sting show in 2022 with them. The other players in the core band were Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and David Sancious on keyboards. That Ten Summoner's Tales album also featured chromatic harmonica solos. Besides this cut, check out "Something The Boy Said."
This song is about tarot cards, readings, and how he’s not interested in material objects or war (that’s not the shape of my heart)… beautiful song, Sting is just magnificent.
As others have mentioned, there’s so much more to explore with Sting’s solo work. You have a goldmine waiting ahead. And to make things better, he surrounded himself with great musicians. The Police were great, but his solo career is something else altogether.
Indeed, I’ve suggested a number of times, this version especially-Sting, Eric Clapton, David Sanborn and a lighter. ua-cam.com/video/SUYI7kIR0S4/v-deo.htmlsi=F9H_jJWnESEZlFPB
Which version are you referring to? There’s a studio, Bluesy version and there’s the album version, the one used in the video at the castle. Both were produced by Eric Clapton.
TEN SUMMONER'S TALES is a masterpiece album. Essential listening, in my opinion.

I first heard this song during the closing credits of the movie, "Leon: The Professional" back in the 90s and I've loved it ever since.
Sting is Top Notch in every way.......one of my all time favorites......thanks guys
One of my fav Sting songs! I have it on my nighttime playlist. :)
Beautiful song - with the haunting harmonica played by the legendary (and unmistakeable) Larry Adler.
One of the best songs and performances I’ve ever heard. I sing this and last request the occasional time on karaoke 🎤 😂
It’s a great song with the added bonus of the late great Larry Adler on harmonica ❤
Love Sting!
Thanks again for the offering!
Saw him at the World Arena in Colorado Springs from the 5th row! Heaven.
As others have mentioned, there’s so much more to explore with Sting’s solo work. You have a goldmine waiting ahead. And to make things better, he surrounded himself with great musicians. The Police were great, but his solo career is something else altogether.
One of his most underrated songs is "Mad About You."
Beautiful on every level. This... is Music to my ears. Thank you.
Love you guys letting each other express yourselves. That’s why your the most. ❤
One of the most exquisitely beautiful Songs
You guys need to check out Sting's ( It's Probably Me ) from the Lethal Weapon 3 soundtrack
Another great choice for Movies too. ❤
Indeed, I’ve suggested a number of times, this version especially-Sting, Eric Clapton, David Sanborn and a lighter.

That song is fire
Which version are you referring to? There’s a studio, Bluesy version and there’s the album version, the one used in the video at the castle. Both were produced by Eric Clapton.
This song is also on “Ten Summoners Tales”. 👍🏼❤️🎶
My favorite by Sting.
This album was recorded in a castle. The acoustics in that room made the already amazing playing magical.
