Jay & Amber, you'll love his "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free", "Fortress Around Your Heart", "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and "We'll Be Together"!!! edit- Fragile- This was inspired by an American Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua, named Ben Linder, who was murdered by Contras.
"The Shape Of My Heart" is a beautiful song by him, definitely one to check out! And you guys need to watch out for when he's next touring anywhere vaguely near you, go see him live!
I cried the first time I heard this song. I've cried many times since. When 9/11 happened, Sting was in Italy, where he has a home. And he was going to give a small concert for the villagers. And it was to be videotaped. There was a discussion about whether or not to perform that day. He, the band, and many involved with the concert decided it was best not to let the enemy defeat us and steal our joy. They performed this song that evening. Check out the video.
A couple more solo Sting to look for. "When we dance", beautiful love song. His cover of Jimi Hendrix "little wing". And one, I'm not sure how to find the particular version, but he did a song for a movie soundtrack. I can't even think of the name of the movie, but the song is "I burn for you". There's a live version that ends with a massive drum solo. Edit: sorry, I meant to write this as a regular reply, not a reply to a reply.
Yes, that performance of Fragile, I recall was edited and on Vh-1, at least by Sept’13 ‘01. I taped coverage off TV around then. I am in agreement this was an appropriate choice for Sting band his band to play that night. I have the CD of that modest concert in Tuscany. I did see Sting on the “Nothing but the Sun” tour in 1988. They played at my college in Ohio, Miami University, Oxford Ohio (est.1809 - after the native tribe, and the river) It was a great concert.
Sting was scheduled to perform a live stream concert in Tuscany on the night after the morning of 9/11, they performed one song, Fragile. It’s on you tube. This song makes me feel better whenever there is a humanitarian crisis. Simply beautiful
Sting is one of the best lyricists. Proof of this is in his songs, 'Fortress Around Your Heart' and 'All This Time.' His first solo hit was 'If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free, ' another great song I think you'll enjoy.
This song and They Dance Alone were addressing specific issues of that time. Sting knows how to craft a protest song that gently winds itself around the issue and unnoticeably squeezes ever ounce of power out if it.
"They Dance Alone" has a similar deep theme and feel to it - "Shape of my Heart" has one of the most sampled acoustic guitar "riffs" that started life as a practice exercise for his guitarist collaborator Dominic Miller.
By far my favorite song from Sting. You need to watch his concert from Tuscany that occurred in September 11, 2002 at his villa in Tuscany. He opened the show with a message condemning the attacks and the dedicated this song to the victims... He is such a an amazing artist!
Me too. I absolutely ❤ this song. I love "Russians" as well - so applicable given the ongoing war. Ordinary people are not to blame. I know it's another artist but I love Marillion's "Beautiful" so much (ua-cam.com/video/gYplFCf-Gt0/v-deo.html ) - obviously songs mean different things to different people but I took it to mean how disabled (especially mentally disabled) people are treated by society. Makes me cry every time. Their song "Season's End" as well (I won't post another link or my comment will be blocked but search for it) which is about global warming and its affects on everybody especially children. I like music that makes you think. "Fragile" by Sting is one of those.
You're on that Sting train. He is so talented; I have seen him in concert 12 times. Last time in Las Vegas earlier this year. I don't think he has a bad song.
I'm so glad you're doing this. I was one of many who asked for it.❤ it's dedicated to Ben Linden, an American civil engineer who was assassinated by the contras in 1987 in Nicaragua. He's since also sang it many times for other historical events. "they dance alone" is another political song that is magical.
I love that song so much! My band used to cover it, and all the guys knew the Jimmy version, so that's how they played it, but I sang it like the Sting version! 😂
@maryvallas772 that means you're a real one to know the Sting version 👏 love that you were in a band that knows it's artists. I bet you sang it great! Beautiful song!
His musicianship is ethereal. His lyrics are poetic. His soulful passion is because he loves his wife, he loves mother earth (save the rainforests), and he loves cultures and his own human connection to the world is heard in his passionate vehicle to convey these messages to his fellow human family. He is in my portfolio of life. When I hear him I am transported to times in my life when I was an activist and moving through my artistic forms. He brought so much out in me like so many poets I have experienced. Amber you love poetry. This artist is a true poet. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
This entire album (Nothing like the Sun) is so great. Sting loves to work with musicians from around the world and absorb their style and influence. He is a true musician.
Sting was my “go to” artist in college. This was from his second solo album. I bought the CD when it came out, read the liner notes (remember those?) and played the heck out of it. This song still touches and amazes me. The words and message of this song still hold true 40+ years later. Love and peace to you both.
Lyrics: [Verse] If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one Drying in the color of the evening sun Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away But something in our minds will always stay Perhaps this final act was meant To clinch a lifetime's argument That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could For all those born beneath an angry star Lest we forget how fragile we are [Chorus] On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are how fragile we are [Guitar Solo] [Chorus] On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are how fragile we are How fragile we are how fragile we are
The very beginning of this song.......the instrumentation before he begins to sing.....always makes me tear up. I know what is to come when he begins to sing about how fragile we are. And then the closing synth with the soft guitar....really tells the story of how fragile we are. It's a very haunting song. Very ethereal.
Really, such a beautiful song too many people love; but I shall say, as a brazilian guy, that what too many people don't know is that, by the time Sting composed this song, he also wrote its version in Portuguese - "Frágil" - inspired by "bossa nova" from Brasil, a country (my country!) he has visited many times.
More Sting: "Russians", "If I Ever Lose My Faith", "We'll Be Together" and more. Sting wrote this in 1987 during a tropical storm in the Caribbean. He realized just how fragile life was and how easily it could be taken from us. But the song took on meaning for many causes throughout the years, including after 9/11. It is a song that anyone with a heart should reflect on, that anyone with empathy towards human kind should be able to relate to. It is a beautifully written song but the instrumentals behind it really grip you and emote feelings that make this so special.
Actually, this entire album, Nothing Like The Sun, is full of excellent songs. Excellent writing, excellent musicianship, excellent production, absolutely a 5 Star album. ☆☆☆☆☆
SUCH a multi-faceted human!! His MIND blows MY MIND!!! So many different topics his music covers and so many moods... A very deep person that doesn't seem to have a problem having FUN, EITHER!!! 😍 He's one person, it seems to me, would be SO AWESOME to KNOW! Such a huge and varied catalog he has to explore!! LOVED YOUR REACTION - as I usually DO! HUGS!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Sting "FORTRESS AROUND YOUR HEART" ("option two" has the best video-quality for this song). It's my favorite of ALL his songs. Sting said it's his favorite song he's ever made. 🙌
One of Sting’s most stunning songs from his amazing ‘Nothing l in me the sun’ album. ‘A thousand years’ is a beautiful love song and was the follow up to Desert Rose. Well worth reacting to.
Robbie Robertson passed away today from cancer. Robbie was a founding member of The Band but also fantastic solo career. Rob Squad has reacted to the Band before please do again.
YAY! this is the best Sting song in my opinion. Sting is one of my favorite artists. His unique voice and music can take you to different places and create different atmospheres. Fragile is my favorite Sting song br far. It is a raw and powerful song. He makes the guitar cry and the lyrics are all about how vulnerable we as humans are. It was written after he visited Latin America and learned about some human rights issues that went on at the time. Powerful and poignant song even though it is simplistic but it doesn't need much to reach your core. Thank you both for this wonderful reaction ❤
You guys really need to check out this song featuring Stevie Wonder and Sting it is amazing!! It will literally give you chills and when Stevie start playing the harmonica it's a wrap. The look of Wonder LOL (pun) intended and admiration on Sting's face❤
Every little thing Sting does is Magic . ( Pun intended ) . Fragile is a true masterpiece , that is still valid today . The song has been covered by 40 artists. Brian McKnight, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick to name a few
Def Leppard is in Tulsa on August 16. Saw them last night in Columbus Ohio. Awesome! I know how much you love them. Tickets were not too expensive, Invest on seeing them live!!!! Take care!
This genre was known as “World Music”. Taking multiple musical genres from different parts of the planet and blending them into an hypnotic vibe that’s hard to tie down. ✌️
These days, activists deride it as "cultural appropriation." Even back in the day, Sting was accused of "exploiting" (somehow) the black jazz artists he worked with on his first two solo albums. SMH.
Jay and Amber - in terms of world music - please, please review "Johnny Clegg and Jaluka" - "Scatterlings of Africa" (ua-cam.com/video/2X-o7Kfqbuw/v-deo.html ). Johnny was an amazing person, anthropologist and anti-apartheid campaigner. He was also a close personal friend of Nelson Mandela - sadly died a few years ago from pancreatic cancer. His music is fantastic, a fusion of traditional South African and western pop/rock and pretty much unique.
Sting produced and sang in a rock-opera called "When The Last Ship Sailed". It's an autobiography of his growing up by a shipyard where his father worked. It's evocative.
I saw the musical here in Los Angeles with Sting in the cast. It's called "The Last Ship". I found it disappointing, and sadly I found the songs kind of disappointing as well. i wanted to love it, but it just wasn't that good. It closed early on Broadway, but one reviewer said that the topic of the story was not relatable to American audiences, as UK audiences responded to it better and were more familiar with the cultural references and the dialect that was spoken.
I'm from the UK, my father grew up not far from where Sting grew up. I saw the show in York and was absolutely drawn in from the get go to the very last note. I agree it was very much about the local history and probably not easily relatable for a wider audience 😊
Finally!!!❤ this song is absolutely beautiful I'm so glad that you listened. Sting is quite the philanthropist and he really has such great stories to tell if you follow him on any social media❤
Sting is one of those rare performers who has genuinely gotten better over time. I love all the songs from my childhood that he put out, but each decade that passes, I'm so impressed by his latest recordings and how much his work has improved. He is a true craftsman. :)
My very favorite Sting song! I have performed this live and people just adore it. ❤. Every time I hear it I go into a trance like state that is so serene.
Check out "Rise & Fall" by Craig David & Sting. Sting released an entire collabo album with dancehall singer Shaggy around 2 or 3 years ago. Sting also produced another album by Shaggy singing Frank Sinatra songs. Andy Summers from The Police was a member of the 1960s band The Animals for a short time.
I like many of Sting's solo hits and those with the Police, and you have already heard the beautiful "Fields of Gold", but "Brand New Day" is a personal favorite and it features Stevie Wonder on the harmonica.
Haven't heard anything yet from my favorite Sting album... The Soul Cages The Soul Cages is a concept album focused on the death of Sting's father. The title track won the first Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 1992. My favorite cut is "The Wild Wild Sea".
Years ago, there was series on CMT (country music television) called Crossroads which paired country artists with musicians from other types of music. They paired Sting with Vince Gill. They sang each others songs together. Every breath you take, whenever you come around, etc. Bob Seager and Jason Aldeen , John Meyer with Brad Paisley, Keith Urban with John Fogarty, Taylor Swift with Def Leppard and more. Videos are on UA-cam.
I cannot begin to tell you how many times I've listened to this song, but it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. It's sooo beautiful and the lyrics are so moving...yeah.
Sting is like the Beatles in that his music is always evolving, and his songs are able to evoke so many different reactions and emotions. All of his albums are unique, and I consider him a true treasure for his awareness, and social commentary through his songs. I have been a fan since the Police, but ,ore so when he went solo. His live performances were extraordinary.
I remember when this song was released. Sting used to come to Brazil a lot, but he liked to go to the Amazon and be with the Indians. he said that the word "fragilidade", which means fragility, had a very pleasant sound.
There is a side album with only a few songs on it called "Nada Como El Sol" (Nothing Like the Sun) where he sings this in Spanish and again in Portuguese. "Englishman in New York" is s great song. I don't know that I've ever heard a bad song by him on any of his albums. Even his darker album after his father died "The Soul Cages" is absolute brilliant in it clearly is an album written in mourning. He is one of the greatest writer composers.
Sting is one incredibly deep human being. Just a stream of consciousness thing from me here, but with the current popularity of the movie "Oppenheimer" you might take a look at his song "Russians". It is about the threat of nuclear holocaust that hangs over the world and contains a line "How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy." Just a thought. As always keep up the great reactions. Peace out.
"Fragile" (1987) did not chart as a single (in the U.S. anyway). Joel Whitburn's Billboard chart book lists it in the "Classic Non-Hot 100 Songs" category. But checking Discogs, I see a U.S. single on "Fragile," (not just a promo), so I don't know why it wouldn't have charted because this was a record I heard a lot. An LP cut that received lots of radio play on Adult Contemporary & Quiet Storm radio formats.
The combination of classic instruments and warm synths produced the typical 80s sound. The massive talent of artists like Sting made this decade so special.
Just when you think he can't get any better or amazing, he does something completely different. 35 years ago he released an album of some of his songs that he sung in Spanish and Portuguese. I feel his heart wrenching stuff like "They Dance Alone" or "Russians" is sometimes balanced with some of his borderline humorous stuff like "Love is Stronger than Justice" or "Seven Days". I haven't heard a song or full album of his that I don't like. Jay is right, he sets a mood. Great artist and great reaction!
You guys put out the video for this wonderful song on my birthday! 🎉 Thanks so much haha. Seriously though Sting is such an underrated musician and singer. How amazing is this??
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written and composed…
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free", "Fortress Around Your Heart", "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and "We'll Be Together"!!!
edit- Fragile- This was inspired by an American Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua, named Ben Linder, who was murdered by Contras.
#cheers !
I’d add “Sister Moon” off the same album.🤙
Also, Brand New Day, All This Time, This Cowboy Song.
@@caseymoe816 🤘
and we should NEVER forget, the Republicans funded the Contras, even after congress voted to NOT fund this group. Thanks Reagan.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
"The Shape Of My Heart" is a beautiful song by him, definitely one to check out! And you guys need to watch out for when he's next touring anywhere vaguely near you, go see him live!
YES!
Hands down my favorite song... probably my funeral tune honestly...
I've seen him live he's great on his 60th birthday we sang it to him.
@@waynedome148 Have seen him live twice, once for his Symphonicities album with an orchestra and again earlier this year, both times were great!
Shape of My Heart - this is a 'must listen' !!
They Dance Alone, Shape of My Heart, Little Wing, and Why Should I Cry are all beautiful ballads by Sting.
Don't forget "Come Down In Time."
My God the best songs
'They Dance Alone' is so incredibly moving, especially when you know the details of what he saw in S. America and why Sting wrote the song.
They dance alone is a killer track
Hendrix wrote Little Wing
I cried the first time I heard this song. I've cried many times since.

Enchanting, soulful Sting.. respect
Sting was scheduled to perform a live stream concert in Tuscany on the night after the morning of 9/11, they performed one song, Fragile. It’s on you tube. This song makes me feel better whenever there is a humanitarian crisis. Simply beautiful
Written for John Lennon's murder
Sting is one of the best lyricists. Proof of this is in his songs, 'Fortress Around Your Heart' and 'All This Time.'
His first solo hit was 'If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free, ' another great song I think you'll enjoy.
"For all those born beneath an angry star. Lest we forget how Fragile we are."
Sting is an absolute genius!
So befitting of a former English teacher!
One of my favorite lyrics!
And "Nothing ever comes from violence and nothing ever could."
Have you ever heard him sing it in Portuguese.
The entire "Nothing Like The Sun" album is incredible!
I bought a MINT copy of this album at a used record fair for 2 dollars, it is perfect and i bet it was never played.
You said it!
FYI Robbie Robertson from The Band just died at 80. RIP
Another absolute giant gone, RIP Robbie. ✌️
Absolutely! Rest in peace Mr. Robertson. The Band was truly awesome.
His solo work is amazing
May he RIP
Nooooo 😪 I love him!
Sting is a person of the world. So many music genres and styles of music. He is a great musician and singer. I love the variety he presents.
'Fragile' and 'Shape of My Heart' are my two of my faves by this man.
The man is a musical genius. This is probably my most favorite song of his but I love everything he's done.
This song and They Dance Alone were addressing specific issues of that time. Sting knows how to craft a protest song that gently winds itself around the issue and unnoticeably squeezes ever ounce of power out if it.

That DVD is so beautiful to watch. I love seeing all the background work and Sting's property. So glad they followed through on playing.
One of my favourite Dvd's to watch in front of an open fire in winter. Amazing❤

They Dance Alone is such a sad statement of war and what humans do in these heartless times. Its worthy of a reaction for sure.
"Little Wing" - Stings cover of Jimi Hendrix's iconic song is mesmerizing & breathtaking

My all time favorite Sting song 💓💓💓 Just stunningly beautiful
I so agree ... we're all human with the same problems, we're not responsible for our "leaders'. x
My fav Sting song... so good!!
This entire album (Nothing like the Sun) is so great. Sting loves to work with musicians from around the world and absorb their style and influence. He is a true musician.
Sting is my favorite artist! Been a fan since the 80's.
In this song, I'd describe is voice as "Haunting".
This is one of Sting’s most beautiful songs.
I got to see him do that song live…he was unbelievable! It was just magical to hear him play the guitar like that.
Sting was my “go to” artist in college. This was from his second solo album. I bought the CD when it came out, read the liner notes (remember those?) and played the heck out of it. This song still touches and amazes me. The words and message of this song still hold true 40+ years later. Love and peace to you both.

Lyrics:
[Verse]
If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the color of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are
[Chorus]
On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
[Guitar Solo]
[Chorus]
On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
How fragile we are how fragile we are
The very beginning of this song.......the instrumentation before he begins to sing.....always makes me tear up. I know what is to come when he begins to sing about how fragile we are. And then the closing synth with the soft guitar....really tells the story of how fragile we are. It's a very haunting song. Very ethereal.
Sting is a true poet in his lyrics😎😎❤❤
Really, such a beautiful song too many people love; but I shall say, as a brazilian guy, that what too many people don't know is that, by the time Sting composed this song, he also wrote its version in Portuguese - "Frágil" - inspired by "bossa nova" from Brasil, a country (my country!) he has visited many times.
Another one I would recommend is "Shape of My Heart". His expert guitar work is on display again in that song.
In an interview from Elton John talking about Sting’s talent he talked about how good this song is.
Love Sting. My era...please Level 42 Something about you is fire 🔥
I forgot, another great Sting song is 'Brand New Day' with great harmonica from Stevie Wonder-Colin Ward
He is magnificent lyrics, and incredible as musicians, he is one of the greatest...

Sting was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame about 10yrs ago. Well deserved.
Esperanza Spaulding did an amazing tribute of this song.
I'll have to check that out.
He does have upbeat songs if you want them! “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” “We’ll Be Together” and “Heavy Cloud, No Rain” for starters. ❤

Short and sweet
Absolutely one of Stings best. I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it, sitting in my first loves bedroom listening to music.

Based off his excellent Soul Cages album.
Peter Gabriel is another who fits that bill.
One of the most magical song ever written
My very favorite Sting song! I have performed this live and people just adore it. ❤. Every time I hear it I go into a trance like state that is so serene.
When we dance is an incredible Sting ballad
The Soul Cages
The Soul Cages is a concept album focused on the death of Sting's father.
The title track won the first Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 1992.
My favorite cut is "The Wild Wild Sea".
Sting did this same music in Portuguese (Brazilian Portuguese), it's called "Fragil".
Im surprised this song isn't as as highly appreciated as some of his other stuff. Such a genius. "Shape of my heart" is my favorite.
Told you!!! So glad you finally reacted to this song. Such a lovely tune. Sting is so versatile. Thank you again.
Omg, when it comes to Sting, I have ONE suggestion, if you haven't gotten it yet. "Russians". Very powerful song!
And so up to date. ✌️
Very relevant today. A must listen.
and more relevant than ever ... unfortunately.
A masterpiece 👌One of my all time favorites ❤️
Sting and Paul Simon are the two I could just always listen to. Their writing and feel for music is next level.
Anything Sting. Headphones, hammock, and whiskey, my friends.
Like your listening "mode" 👍
There is a side album with only a few songs on it called "Nada Como El Sol" (Nothing Like the Sun) where he sings this in Spanish and again in Portuguese.
"Englishman in New York" is s great song. I don't know that I've ever heard a bad song by him on any of his albums. Even his darker album after his father died "The Soul Cages" is absolute brilliant in it clearly is an album written in mourning. He is one of the greatest writer composers.
Gorgeous melody, poignant lyrics...I always have Sting on my playlist.
Such a soothing voice ❤❤❤
Sting is one incredibly deep human being. Just a stream of consciousness thing from me here, but with the current popularity of the movie "Oppenheimer" you might take a look at his song "Russians". It is about the threat of nuclear holocaust that hangs over the world and contains a line "How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy." Just a thought. As always keep up the great reactions. Peace out.
I REALLY like hearing Stevie Wonder sing this with Sting 💗💞💗
"Fragile" (1987) did not chart as a single (in the U.S. anyway). Joel Whitburn's Billboard chart book lists it in the "Classic Non-Hot 100 Songs" category. But checking Discogs, I see a U.S. single on "Fragile," (not just a promo), so I don't know why it wouldn't have charted because this was a record I heard a lot. An LP cut that received lots of radio play on Adult Contemporary & Quiet Storm radio formats.
The British must be good Patreon payers because this channel leans heavy on songs that topped the charts in the UK.
Fields of Gold is another of his beautiful songs you'd enjoy since you love this sound of his.
They already reacted to it.
The day of 9/11/2001 sting was giving a concert in London and he opened the show with “fragile”.
Such a cool song. Sting is so great at creating such gentle, soft songs with incredibly powerful messages. Brilliant!.
Awesome pick y'all, this is one of my favorite songs of all time.
You guys put out the video for this wonderful song on my birthday! 🎉
Thanks so much haha.
Seriously though Sting is such an underrated musician and singer. How amazing is this??
