I’m 71 but my Highschool in Fayetteville NC cared for me as if I had no parents. They were just not capable parents. The school drove me to colleges, applied for loans and academic scholarships. I eventually married my late husband who graduated from Princeton and Michigan and sold jets!

This has nothing to do with real estate but I think it’s fascinating to hear your story. I think the public schools back in the 60s and 70s made themselves out to be able to do the parenting as well as the academics but it just isn’t sustainable on a large scale. It makes so much of what we hear these days make more sense.

If you move to NC from CA the folks who prepare your food, give you massages, clear your dishes and create “your experience” are forced to live on the outer end of town in trailers. I don’t plan to move to Asheville because of the above but man’s inhumanity to man is really best exemplified by west coast people moving to cheaper east coast areas. The schools were good. Now the taxes are thru the roof and school quality has declined because teachers are not paid well and either leave or live in the trailers with the guy who washes your dishes or repairs your rear end collision.

Thank you for the review. It's extremely helpful. I have been trying to move to NC for 25 years; but, something always got in the way. The closer I near retirement age, the more I think about finally making it there. As a former New Yorker who traveled way too south to Florida, I've heard about the half-backs (those New Yorkers who realized the error of their ways and made it only half way back to NY) and how they've settled in Cary, NC and surrounding areas. That just might be for me. On your so well reviewed points: Traffic - nothing for a former New Yorker. I went from NYC to upstate NY and ice is the most dangerous thing to navigate. Even in my 30s/40s, I'd opt to stay at home on the forecasted icy days. Schools - thankfully, that time has past for me. Politics, yup I am moderate so that works. Racism. This has been a real issue for me and the children that I expect may follow. We are mixed with 3 different nationalities yet look like two others. Diversity is so important and I am grateful to hear that it's no worse than here in Florida. Religion. A catholic who isn't a fan but I like your perspective on it. I would never turn away a blessing or positive conveyance from any religion. Once I start looking, I will give you a call. :)

City and state planners should watch as NC, Austin, TX etc... where they incentivize companies to locate in the state without having the infrastructure in place.

    • @EllenPitts
      @EllenPitts  2 роки тому +2

I’ve talked about this in a couple videos. It’s just not possible to build all the infrastructure before you have the tax base. Cities will always be in a state of growth. That’s just the nature of cities.
I do think that the way companies are moving to areas that are not concentrated in one location will help some. Research Triangle Park still has the majority of our tech and pharma companies but that is changing as biotech moves into holly springs and Sanford and other tech companies move into outlying areas.

Another concern is usually the lack of strict zoning laws. With the amount of influx from all over the pressure upon land is tremendous. This isn't just a NC concern but includes other southern states. Years ago, when land was cheap and fewer people came here to live, there wasn't really a need for it. Zoning just isn't part of the mindset among people of the south and its slow process at best despite the obvious need.

Regarding politics and political balance... See articles on the recent NC Supreme Court ruling on gerrymandering (political redistricting).
I have no doubt that the more metropolitan areas of NC are more progressive (most metro areas are, even in the South), but if the state legislature can redraw the voting districts to counter this, it ensures that the state will be predominantly run by conservatives for the foreseeable future, regardless of how progressive the metro areas become.
Heat, humidity, bugs and critters were a significant reason why my wife and I gave up on retiring to NC (Raleigh-Durham, Chapel Hill area), but this new redistricting nonsense was the final nail in the coffin.
I don't mind living somewhere where my preferred politicians are fairly (even regularly) beaten. But we don't want to live where they lose because the opposing party has gamed the rules (a form of vote suppression) in order to do so (like Texas and FL have).
Aside from that... Some good info in your video.

I don’t think any of the mentioned here would bother me. Living in FL we have a mix of pretty much everything in all of these areas. Traffic, where I live isn’t bad, it is where I used to live south of me now, but nothing you can’t handle. I’m not a religious person, but I respect those that are. I have no issue living in a diverse community or state. If you respect me I will respect you. It’s a simple concept. Now, if your disrespectful, I will not match that energy, I will just simply leave the situation or conversation respectfully and let you do your thing. We’re looking to move to Western NC (the location, not the city) from where we are now, I don’t see any of these things being an issue for my family. :)

NC is a red state. It always has been. Moving to a blue enclave doesn't change that fact. Moving to a red enclave in California doesn't change the fact that it is a blue state.
The fact of the matter is that the state is only desirable BECAUSE it is a red state, has red state laws, red state opportunities, and red state culture. In the few blue enclaves people have moved to and brought their politics with them, crime and taxes have soared.

North Carolina DOES get snow - occasionally. There seems to be a weather line that follows I-85. NORTH of I-85 there will be snow, south of I-85 there will be sleet, freezing rain or just plain rain. When there IS snow south of I-85 - usually only 1-3 inches here in the Triangle area - there will be more snow accumulation north of I-85.
    But sometimes ...
I once worked for a large computer company that has an extensive operation out at RTP. Management all came from upstate New York, and they NEVER closed for a piddlin' 1-3 inches of snow. But they did have an inclement weather plan. You were supposed to tune into a certain radio station who carried the company's PAID announcement.
In 2000 there was a storm that was predicted to bring 3 inches to the Triangle Area. Instead it dumped 20+ inches overnight. I looked out my front door that morning and said, "They ARE going to be closed today". Went back in and tuned the radio and sure enough the announcement came through "... closed today, all shifts". Then the announcer went on to say "... and the Governor has called out the National Guard".
I swear, no sooner were those words out of the announcer's mouth than my phone rang; my 1SG calling to tell me to come on in. 😏

They are quick to share their discontent about southern culture or lack of infrastructure built prior to their mass migration. I love NC and the capital city but have definitely noticed political influence in the public schools in recent years. I feel like every other day my kids have to read about how great Obama was but never any mention of non Dem presidents after 1970. Every month is a celebration for some other culture or sub culture but any talk of religion or patriotism and some lib mom with that cringe "coexist" bumper sticker has to complain. And it gets real annoying always hearing about how it's not like this in NY. Most locals don't say anything bc they are too polite.

That NC weather is nothing like Texas. Texas offers scorching hot summers and ugly winters. Constant droughts from June to September. Summer highs of 115 degrees F and winter lows of -10 F…that is a 125 degree variance. In the fall, the leaf changes are minimal and boring. In the winter, grass is brown and trees are bare versus Carolina’s pines but ice storms bring constant power disruptions. Tornados and hail are major threats from February to July.
Texas weather is the worst anywhere.

I happened to watch Nurse Liz’s video last week and frankly, I didn’t put much stock in it at all because it’s entirely anecdotal to her situation and who she is. While obviously she has every right to feel the way she feels, I could tell after watching her video that I probably don’t share many similarities to her and so the things she wasn’t crazy about would probably not be issues for me or my family. I really liked how you referred to her video and also debunked some of the statements she made, and frankly you gave a much less biased view. Moved from the Boston area to the Charlotte area 5 years ago.
    My list:
LIKES: the people. We are all different. I love people just chat. I'm not religious but it's interesting to listen to others views and beliefs, even concerning politics. I tend to be conservative.
The weather. I don't drive in the snow here because other people can't drive to begin with, never mind in adverse conditions! 😁
The cost of living. Double edged sword because lower incomes is a dislike.
The critters. Interesting beasts but spiders...big nope.
Lack of traffic. It can be bad when I venture into Charlotte but where I am...no complaints.
    DISLIKES:
Summer- 90 degrees and humid, no ocean nearby. There's "beaches" but their muddy ponds with big snakes. Stagnant air. Thank God for a/c!
Shopping (local) kind of sucks. Maybe it's just me but shopping in general, don't have the variety. Then again I live in a small city and don't venture to Charlotte often.
Restaurants: just not good, fast food or otherwise. See above statement.
Economy, cost of living is lower but it seems the wages are much to low. Goods cost the same here or anywhere else in the country.
I don't have kids in school so no comment. Will I leave...nope. Just been considering moving closer to the coast.
One last point. It seems people here have known each other for generations. Everyone went to school together, go to church together etc. You are new. I will never fit in like a local, because I am not. I'm Ok with that, nor surprised by that.

Traffics: Everyone has to deal with traffic. I don’t care where you live. It just depends on what lifestyle you have chosen to have.
Example: we live without commuting distances to Spartanburg SC. My husband drove it for 39 years. Because so many people were leaving Spartanburg at the same time, there was heavy traffic for a while.
When he retired, he he got a part time job working around the county There were days he complained about the traffic. Days he walked a cross the street.
Buses: I drove a bus for 14 years. The only time my kids were ever on a bus more than 60 minutes, was when the snow day wasn’t announced before I left. I arrived at school, I turned around and took them home. The teachers call and let the parents know they were coming home.
    Politics; RESEARCH BEFORE YOU MOVE!’
Religion: People have a right to live what they believe. That is s basic right.
It looks to me like you didn’t research the area you were moving into before you moved. That, or you we’re determined before hand that it wasn’t going to work.
Even in Rutherford County, I as I drive to my moms house 11
miles to my moms house, I pass or come within a mile and a half is 15 church’s. Although that’s just in one area and there are many more in the entire county, I know people everywhere you would have been comfortable in the company of.
If anything is going to make a big move to another state, they should do their own research based on their own biases.
I don’t like people making these UA-cam videos without facts to back it up
The guy who said NC DRIVERS Couldn’t drive. Where did he get his facts? Oh, or was that just an opinion. You see I don’t know this new Tar Heel. I know not from whence he came.

If you are a teacher, go to Seattle WA where they pay for your CEU credits. I am making a measly 52,000 a year AFTER I worked for TWENTY YEARS in NC. Seattle pays $79,000 for the my CEU credits for those many years. NC took away Masters pay, EOG pay, Longevity pay, step pay. You do not get that 2 1/2% pay raise every year NC used to give. Starting in 2014, they stopped that. Every FIVE years you work, then you get that two and a half percent pay raise. And there is no teacher union like in PA. Get out NOW. @reilea9977 Рік тому

@@peggysouther4484 You need to pay attention when people talk. What part of NC did I say isn't great?! The poor pay. Your question was "Have you moved since you dislike NC so much?" NC as well as ANY state is either liked or disliked on so MANY DIFFERENT aspects. The poor pay NC gives teachers against other states does not determine that the state is disliked. ONE, does not determine if the ENTIRE state is awful. That's like complaining about Walmarts clothes and saying "since you don't like the clothes they sell at Walmart, have you thought about never coming back and just shop at Harris Teeter?" when it's the clothes that aren't all that great, but you can buy food. The problem is PAY. Pay attention to the fact that teachers (10,000 of them wearing red t-shirts saying "Red for Ed" and ALL schools in NC were closed because of the march) went to march at Raleigh for better pay. Teachers do not get paid enough compared to other states. NC NEEDS a union just like other states to get better pay. Are you going to get in the face of those 10,000 teachers and ask them the same question?...."since you dislike NC so much." When I said Run from NC, it was because of the pay. I am warning other teachers that if they want better pay, they need to leave to get that to a state that pays better. And when a person warns, it's because they have been there long enough to know that NC is not the place to be for a descent pay but they themselves can't leave because unfortunately the teachers have invested too much time (years) so if they leave, all those years will be taken away for retirement credit for retirement pay, and if they leave with maybe only 5 more years to go to retire but move at that point for better pay, they will have to start at ground zero with better pay but NO retirement pension until they put in at least ANOTHER 20 years. You can't take your years working in one state with you and combine it with the amount of time you put in, in the new state you are in. When a teacher moves, they've lost ALL time towards retirement pension. I am warning newbies to get out now and go to a state that has a Union, better pay, better health benefits, (PA), step pay, CEU credit pay (other states). Who the freak would NOT want that? They took away masters pay, yep, NC did that and took longevity pay away, and the EOG pay. As far as the kids being dumb. Well guessss what? NC is now hiring those that did not finish college, are NOT certified, and THEY are now in the classroom with no experience because teachers are leaving in droves. Yep, NC teachers (younger ones) got wise and DID LEAVE NC, they can, theyre younger. They lost 3-5 years before they woke up and realized pay DOES NOT GO UP every year like it does in other states, it only goes up every FIVE years. NC is now several thousand teachers short and it's going to get worse. You see, people ARE leaving like YOU suggested and that's why when you look it up on internet, you WILL see teachers got wise. Meh, they only lost a few years so it isn't going to hurt them too much to start all over again working on that 20-30 year time for full retirement. It's the ones that have ALREADY put in MANY years and only have a few years left so now they are forced to stay. Don't assume that a person can leave right off the bat when the state pays terrible. It depends on how much was already invested, and, what's wrong with warning those that haven't lost too much time to leave now while the leaving is good?! NOTHING. So, you can take your smart-----answer about "then leave" because you know nothing about the education system because either You Are Not In It, or......you ARE a teacher and the horrid pay is ok with you because you are married so it doesn't matter. Remember, 10,0000 marched one year, we marched again the next year, then the pandemic hit. NC is at the point that that they will let anyone teach now. How's THAT grab you? We are also having to have Resource teachers and teacher assistants to cover classes because schools can't even get a sub a lot of times. PA pays resource teachers, the counselor, the Social Worker, the TA's extra pay when being used as a sub. NOT NC. And here you are acting all high and mighty like you know what you are talking about. You sound like a bully and low cognitive.

Moving out of NE, to NC learning the roads is tricky and the schools from what I heard least one had some crazy stuff going on in nc schools, and christian churches are strong here and in Nebraska too. I've grown to learn about NC alot. And I can tell you what you can learn in Nebraska if you move there.
First off, roads through the whole state are flat and boring so be prepared to get your electronic devices out, fishing in public places are great but be careful not all ponds and creeks and lakes are public, the roads in towns are sometimes curvy, hilly, woods like, and country roads gravel, highways and construction is a hazard so be on the lookout and follow signs, and watch out for cars who pull out fast. Attraction in omaha nebraska there is alot an old market is a must see, plus the zoo is biggest in usa,. Foods are good but not as good as NC foods. the politics I keep to myself, and race I would say it's everywhere but make friends in ne, and not enemies, be cautious of the drivers as they like to take over the roads there. helping tip is if you go to gravel roads make sure to find rocks and flowers and take a shovel with you but be safe, make sure it's not in a person's property. And that's it. Helpful video and great comments I've read on others about NC. Take care.

When you ask individuals to give specific examples of what they claim as racist, they either can give no actual examples or when they do, it has nothing to do with race at all. It has nearly everything to do with personal choices, each of us being born with different abilities and talents, and just having a different view than someone else.
Too, to claim that racism only exists only within one race is actually racist in and of itself. Anyone of any race can be racist. My middle son had tremendous racism committed against him in a YMCA basketball league when he was in high school, with all of then racial epithets to go along with it. He actually had to quit when it started becoming physical, and the Director of the facility would do nothing about it because he was afraid of the backlash that they would get from the families of the kids who were bowling our son. We were able to get our money back. Two years ago, unprovoked, I was simply open carrying my pistol in the parking lot of Walmart as I was walking in, and I heard someone in the distance, yelling and screaming about me being a white supremacist. I turned around, and it was a black lady called me that for simply for open carrying my pistol. I just chuckled, and went inside. Our daughter-in-law is black, and she has been called an Uncle Tom, about two or three of her black friends for being a black conservative and for dating/marrying our son. They’ve never had any issues with any white people.
“Racism” exists nearly exclusively in the media, entertainment, activists, and politicians. They can’t control people if they keep them, angry, fearful, and dependent. If you look in your every life, and are honest with yourself, you will see that people of different races get along very well. But if you’re in the mindset of chasing phantom s around every corner, you’re going to constantly see it where it doesn’t exist. This is what is absolutely destroying our nation. So this video actually disappoints me because I know in NC race is not an issue. The majority of us see each other as individuals and not what identity group we belong to. So if someone who is wanting to move, here is obsessed with the race, I honestly wish they would not move here and just go somewhere were race is a constant issue like California, New York, and Oregon.

Sounds like a lot of Christian cringe.

It was ommited the fact that North Carolina is only liberal where the more educated people are, for example, in the Research Triangle. In general, the more educated, the more liberal the person tends to be (of course there are exceptions, but that is what they are: exceptions). The same happens with religion, especially christianity, which goes hand in hand with being more aware of the scheme played by conservatives: shielding their wrongdoings and bigotry under "religious" basis.

But areas to avoid are listed on the internet. THE WORST PLACE TO MOVE IN NC IS ASHEVILLE. I SOLD MY HOUSE AND HAVE DECIDED ID RATHER BE HOUSELESS THAN CONTINUE TO LOOK THERE OR LIVE FHERE. Sorry for the caps. If you like traffic jams, rear end collisions you did not cause, rude sellers, FILTLTHY HOUSES WITH BAD ODOR OVER $800,000 go to Asheville. It’s a nightmare. People from NY and California have overbid each other so that all houses ask $509 a square foot. Most homes are flips or built by builders without scruples who will abandon your build. A couple in the just too cool West Asheville rewrote the HOA’s in a neighborhood where lawns were not allowed, no pesticides were allowed paying for info good stuff like that guess how much? One million in a $700,000 neighborhood. They bid $300,000 over asking. Well their home has mold and most of the home is in dumpsters on their “front lawn.” OTHERS have no lawn and grow food organically and due to the lawns your organic food and kids have to be very near TruGreen ChemLawn spraying infamous toxic chemicals such as Roundup. Yes, avoid this entire ride, what you see is not what you get town.
