    It's funny because it's true. We are moving from Dallas to the RDU and I cannot disagree with any of your comparisons. We are ready for trees, four seasons and summer outdoor activities, as well as lower property taxes and lower home and auto insurance rates.

      I was expecting the Texans to roast me but you’re all agreeing with me! 😂 to be honest, all the Texans we met when we were there also agreed but still wouldn’t trade Texas for anything with all its warts. The one positive was the super nice people.

    I moved to Raleigh 8 months ago after 9 years in Austin. It may be for lots of people but it definitely wasn’t for me. The heat was truly unbearable, the city expensive and hugely inconvenient to navigate. Other than the food scene there (which was amazing) I found it to be pretty overrated. So far the move to Raleigh has been an upgrade in every single way.

      @@pepsico815the weather is ABSOLUTELY an upgrade and continues to be one of my favorite things about living here. Summers do get hot (lots of days in the mid 90’s) and there is a decent amount of humidity but it’s not nearly as relentless as Austin. This is my 4th summer here and it’s consistently seemed like after a hot week or two we get a rainy week or a cold front and it knocks the temps down a bit. It also gets cool at night here even in the summer. I’m incredibly heat averse, and although there’s definitely still a decent Summer, it’s infinitely better than Austin. Also it starts in June instead of March and ends in September instead of end of October. 😂 Plus you benefit from 3 other actual seasons as well. I’d say Spring is the season that seems to last the longest here, and it’s also the most beautiful IMO.

    8.25% sale taxes does not apply on most of your daily food, whereas other states 6.25% sale taxes seems to be lower but in the end, the tax amount you have to pay at the grocery is much much higher compare with shopping at Texas grocery stores. The other big factor is NO income taxes in Texas!. It is true that property tax is high, but it is totally worth to live in much newer and modern house. Ellen this video is very well done. I'm a native of North TX, Fort Worth to be exact. Been here 42 yrs my whole life and ready to go! Why? Too darn crowded and too darn hot, plus I felt exactly what you was saying on feeling land locked or confined here. I feel trapped personally. Love TX, yet I got to get away. Too much traffic, the police/community relations are not good.
    I have done my research and Raleigh is where I want to be. Lord willing next yr or no later than 25' I'll be on my way. The population is just right to what I am looking for. Growing up here in Ft. Worth as a teen in the 90's and in the early 2000's there was a freedom on the rd mainly the freeway without traffic. The communities seemed more like a smaller town vibe. From what I hear Raleigh has that community feel plus the proximity to a real beach instead of man made beaches at our lakes. I could go on.... First, Texas varies dramatically depending on where exactly you live. It is bigger than any country in Europe and quite diverse. Central Texas is my favorite part of the world. The same can't be said for West or South Texas. Texas has no state income tax, so the revenue has to be made up in other ways, something to keep in mind when comparing cost of living. Please don't try to tell me that Asheville, NC has a lower cost of living! As much as I like living in Austin, the statement goes well beyond that. Anyone who has spent time on the east coast and the west will almost certainly have a definite preference. i am from the northeast originally and honestly have experienced the east coast for most of my life, and only experienced the west when I was well into my 40s. I was so sick of the east coast that I heeded the advice given to me, go west.
    It was there that I found paradise, not only in Texas, but I'm not looking to write a book here so I'll leave exploring the west to you individually. The best reason I can give you for living in the west is that I have family here, while my family in the east have either died off, or are totally estranged. Say what you want about ambiance, there is no comparison between the east vs. the west. I haven't found another supermarket chain that matches HEB, no comparison. The last (and only) pig roast I ever experienced was in Florida, not Texas. So spend time in both the east and west yourself, and then decide. That's all I can say without spending a lot more time and using a lot more words, so I'll end here.

    A nice video. I live in Baltimore, MD but am seriously thinking about moving further south to Raleigh, NC. I like Texas and have been all over TX but it’s just not for me, especially because of the awful humidity and heat. I’ve been to all 50 states, DC, the Caribbean and to all six livable continents. Anywhere I move to, I’d have an idea. I actually got to meet Matthew McConaughey up in NYC and I got to literally visit Andy Griffith’s house and museum in Mt. Airy, NC. I’m in my early forties, single with no kids, have an AA degree, a BS degree and an MS degree plus skills. I’m trying to get hired for a NC state government job before I move down there. I haven’t worked in over 4 months and just started getting unemployment. Where do you recommend I stay for housing if I make the move? It would be just me moving there starting all over embarking on this adventure. If it doesn’t work out, I figure I can always move back to MD. Are snakes, alligators and wild animals hard to run into in NC? What jobs down there are always hiring that pay decent to live? Does Raleigh hardly get any winter snow or is it pretty much convertible car weather all year in Raleigh? I’ve been all over the state but never lived there. Is NC considered in the Deep South or Sunbelt with palm trees throughout the state? Thank you. 😃

    • @EllenPitts
      @EllenPitts  2 дні тому

      Great to questions!!
      Regarding wildlife, snakes are pretty common . You’ll probably run into the occasional snake and possibly a coyote on a rare occasion. I’ve seen one coyote in my 24 years here. You’ll never see an alligator unless it’s in the zoo. And deer are all over the place. :)
      Snow is incredibly rare. Yes many of my videos I’m driving in the convertible in the winter. It’s very mild and almost never snows. I would say we’re probably more like a mid-Atlantic state than sunbelt or Deep South. We don’t have palm trees. Regarding jobs it really depends on your skill set. The job market is a bit slow right now everywhere I think.
      Regarding where to live, it really depends on your budget and lifestyle. Feel free to give me a call and I’ll talk through your situation with you and recommend some areas. And kudos on meeting Matthew Mcconahey! Here’s my contact information!

    Unfortunately you moved to Texas during a year of record breaking heat. 2011 was hotter than normal in Texas but yes, even a normal Texas summer is not for the faint of heart. But Houston being the armpit of Texas is not a fair comment at all… If anything, Dallas deserves that title. Houston is on the level of Austin with its diversity and nightlife. As for your take on HEB…. Honey😳😳 that’s pure sacrilege!! HEB is one of the trade offs for the heat 😅😅 and one of the things I would miss most about Texas if I left. As for the dreary overcast winter?? 🤔 you must have lived near the armpit of Texas because in Houston, winter is very pleasant with blue skies most days. No we don’t have season change here… trees go from green to dead overnight 😅 but rarely a snowflake or gray sky to be found. I do believe that the winter of 2011 was also an anomaly here in Houston. I do vaguely recall more gray skies that year but it’s not typical.
    At any rate, with all that said, I found your video because I’m thinking of moving to North Carolina… 26 years of this heat is enough for me and I would like some changes of seasons in my life. So if I can break myself away from my HEB then North Carolina sounds like a winner 😍 thanks for sharing.
    PS… I’ve never seen a wild boar or a rattlesnake in the 26 years I’ve been here and Texas tornadoes are baby tornadoes that don’t even register on a scale as the ones in Oklahoma do (my home state)

    I live in Texas and you make some good points but if you’re making them based on your experience in Houston then it might be skewed a bit. I lived there for 3 years and it wasn’t for me, especially the weather. I live in the DFW area now and I appreciate the safety of being land locked especially after going through hurricane Harvey, tax day flood, and Memorial Day floods. I’m super grateful to be far away from water like that. It was just too much. Also, the weather up here is far more comparable to 4 seasons. It gets cold up here and we see leave changes, etc. (I’m originally from the Rocky Mountain region so I call these baby winters but still a nice change of pace). I like the hilly terrain and lots of trees. Hands down, DFW economy can’t be beat though. I know NC is making progress in terms of becoming a tech hub which is cool, but it can’t compete with the opportunities out here. We have world class talent competing for some of the best jobs in the world plus all the diversity from people moving here makes for a good culture and food. I’ve been very impressed with the public school system in my area too. Texas has great schools, very competitive. One thing I do miss about Houston though is HEB! I plan on visiting NC soon, I heard it’s a great place! I’d like to see your mountains.

      @@TomTague-mv4xn that’s awesome. I’ve been to NC a few times and I like it a lot, especially Raleigh. A growing tech hub that has Austin or Denver vibes. Economically, NC can’t touch the powerhouse that is Texas but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have very lucrative opportunities. I’m sure it will be nice to get away from these crazy property taxes 😂.

    Lets talk about quality of in-state college options. Texas is a clear winner here. Speaking of Charlotte specifically (not Raleigh), for high schools, the best public school (Marvin Ridge) and best private school (Charlotte Latin) is still ranked 650-750 nationwide. Except BofA and Wells Fargo, can you think of any global fortune 100 company HQ'd in Charlotte? None. Charlotte is clearly hyped and I'm ready to get out of Charlotte now.

    Can you comment about ticks? North Carolina looks great but how bad are the ticks? Do ticks jump on you when you go hiking. Do they jump on you when you are in your yard? I had a friend with Lyme disease from another state and now I stress about tick populations. That is the only unknown factor keeping me from moving to North or South Carolina.

    • @EllenPitts
      @EllenPitts  2 роки тому +2

      Yes we do have ticks. Honestly they are pretty much everywhere on the east coast. I have only had trouble with them in areas with long grass. If you keep your yard maintained you won’t have problems. And when you go out hiking just do a tick check when you get home. They don’t bite right away….usually hours after they land so if you check you can catch them.
