I used work security during the graveyard shift at a place that got a lot of different types of people (I'll let you read between the lines there). While I didn't carry a firearm (just a baton & pepper spray), I always wore a vest due to the risk at the site. It's definitely a peace of mind thing.

You get the helmet first. a. you will probably have you head exposed more in an encounter than your body. If there is a shot, you are not going to be standing up, out in the open. You will be behind concealment or cover and looking. You don't want just any old surplus helmet. You want one that is comfortable to wear . . . and that will cost $$$. 4. Tactical vests, etc. If you are never going to gain weight (ha ha), you may consider it. 5. Tactical vests, etc. If you do not wear it in practice at the range, you are a fool. a. you learn how it affects your performance in operating a weapon. It will. b. you learn that the extra weight and material will fatigue you out quite rapidly, even on a pleasant day.
I have started street skating at age sixty five. I push around a wheelchair wearing football pants elbow knee and wrist. The vest looks good for rib and shoulder protection.
I would if I could afford it. The last one that I own I gifted to a friend on SWAT squad here in Janesville because he couldn't afford one. That one was gifted to me.
If you look around online you can find used army flack vests for cheap. I picked one up for *$20.* They're perfectly adequate for home defense against handguns (and grenades). They're actually much quicker to put on & take off than a typical vest, too. Maybe not ideal for out & about, but underneath a hoodie in cold weather it's be fine. Especially if you chose to clip the straps to remove the shoulder guards. 🖖🏼
Also if you carry a weapon, there is a non-zero chance that someone may wrestle your weapon away from you and turn it on you. In that case, I'd rather have the ability to take one or two rounds to the center mass and still be able to fight.

I always use a broken Daisy B-B gun to dry fire in my house. It's about the same size as my carry weapon, but lighter. The point is to build muscle memory.
One purpose to dry firing is to learn the trigger. Triggers are pretty much different between most guns. Dry firing using a BB gun doesn't necessarily give you the same benefits of dry firing the actual gun using the actual trigger; which arguably will NOT feel the same as your EDC carry. It's not just about muscle memory. In fact you may being doing more harm than good developing "muscle memory" using something other than your actual EDC.
I’ve had LASD off duty trainers make fun of me for asking if I should bring body armor to the range. On the flip side, I’ve had retired Special Forces instructors require body armor on the range.
If you've seen some of the fools who turn up at ranges, including those who consider themselves highly proficient, you'd understand wanting to wear armor!
I don't usually frequent public ranges if I don't have to, but you can see some very unfortunate gun handling at such places. I started wearing a concealed vest to public ranges after a man standing to my right pointed a loaded pistol at me with his finger on the trigger. It was a Walther PK380 and he had forgotten to take the safety off. When he got a click and no bang, he turned the gun to the left to troubleshoot it, leaving his finger from on trigger. Thanks be to God it wasn't a hang fire! I should have confronted him about it, but instead I left the range. Since that occasion (but not because of it), I have gotten several instructor and RSO certifications and now teach concealed carry and safe gun handling to new shooters. If the same incident occurred today, I would be much more confident in speaking up to correct the behavior as politely but directly as possible.
The way things are these days with the rise in violent crime and the number of random shootings or drive by shootings and possible gang wars it seems to me a good idea to have that little bit of protection simply for the sake of personal safety

You wouldn't think it, working in academia on an open campus, in case of an active shooter. You have no viable weapon, help is 15+ minutes arriving on scene, and you are repeated told to Hid, Run, Fight. What if you don't get that chance?

Body armor is designed to lessen the chance of getting holes in the parts of the body that pump blood and take in oxygen. Sure, there's lots of spots that body armor doesn't cover that can certainly be life ending if you take shots to them, but center mass is the easiest part of the body to hit that actually has important stuff to hit...
using a back plate to dry fire is going too far... if you have the time and wherewithal to setup plate, or vest, you will have cleared your gun before dry firing... cmon man.
