    As I mentioned this video was a budget build as part of the project with the Hardtail Party UA-cam Channel. I was able to build this bike complete for under $300 US. The Scott itself I picked up for an incredible $10 and then the Specialized StumpJumper donor bike, with the hole in it, for $75. The rest of the parts, new and used, were all purchased to keep the build under my budget of $300, I did have to search for a lot of great deals though to make it work.

    I knew I was inviting the jedi of bike restorations when I reached out to you. I'm so glad you joined this project. We had an absolute blast and it wouldn't have been the same without you. Thanks for the kind words, for sharing your knowledge and expertise, and being a rad human. I can't wait for the next one. I'm amazed at your knowledge and skill repurposing a bike so well for so little money.
    For those wondering what the challenge was... We each had a budget of $300 to build, restored and maintain a bike to take on gooseberry mesa to answer the question: can you have fun on a $300 bike? Old shovel knocked it out of the park on his build. More footage coming soon...

      This only shows, you don’t always need a new bike to enjoy biking. Most of the time “old is still gold”... i hope you could have more cool projects to come... btw, I’m both subscriber of yours, Hardtail Party and OldShovel. Thanks alot for bringing us good content thru your channels... 👊😜👍

    Hey man, about 6 months ago I started working in a bikeshop after losing my job as a bartender due to the pandemic going on atm.. I didn´t know anything about bikes at that point but I got on well with the owner of the place so I kinda got into it pretty quickly.
    I started looking up interesting and/or informative content online to get to know the whole topic more and collect knowledge for the job. In that process I´ve also seen your channel a few times.
    After binge watching so many of your videos now I gotta say you are one of, if not the most amazing and humble person I have seen on this platform ever! The content you make is so honest and pure in it´s own way and even tho you are always a part of your videos, you´re never the focus. You always give these bikes the spotlight and show how much potential there is in something that others wouldn´t even look at. I love the message, positivity and kindness you communicate through this.
    The Santa Cruz christmas special, the restoration of the Gary Fisher with your son and the 98 voodoo are by far my favorite videos of yours! What you have built here on YT is the perfect example of what all this social media is for, spreading a message that is worth to be heard, educating and entertaining people in the best way possible.
    Basically I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the hours of education, wholesomeness and the message you send me aswell as thousand if not millions of other people to be kind and give old things new life!
    Greetings and best wishes during a difficult time for all of us from Hamburg, Germany!
    Martin

    Dude it's a simple fact that an old LX don't work properly because of the upper pulley , change that to a 9speed pulley from a newer derailleur and it will work properly (but you will need some small washers !) ! Have fun ! Awesome build btw you realy need a propper paint booth !!!!

  • @ethanjack4298
    @ethanjack4298 3 роки тому +4

    Love it.
    A note on the shifters and derailleur compatibility, since I've also had to deal with this on my projects. For rear derailleurs Shimano road 10 speed and under (excluding the current tiagra and many of the dura aces, not sure about ultegras) has a 1:1.67 pull ratio (what shimano calls 1:2 actuation). Shimano mountain 9 speed or under (non dyna sys) has the same 1:1.67 ratio. This means they are all intercompatible and I have used 7 speed road sti shifters on a mountain derailleur.
    Road front derailleurs have always used a different pull to mountain ones, but I got mine to work with a road shifter by routing the cable differently.

    • @kirkhobson4417
      @kirkhobson4417 3 роки тому

      I don’t believe that the sram gx derailleur and Shimano Slx 10 speed should work together. Chain and cassette are generally fine to mix but shifter and derailleur should have the same pull ratio and ideally brand because Shimano pulls different then sram.

    I've been riding this bike for 7 years now! ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L It was a great bike the day I got it, put it together, and went on my first ride; more importantly it's an even better bike today. I've ridden trails, street, and skatepark all on this bike. I have replaced almost every part on the bike. Some stuff has broken: derailleurs, wheels, shifter. Everything else were upgrades. The only ramaing original parts are the frame, bottom bracket, and crank set. BB and cranks will be upgraded soon. The geometry isn't great but that is really the only draw back to how good a value this bike is. Even after all the money I've spent upgrading it's still a more affordable bike than I'd have bought from a proper bike shop, especially with full suspension. I've also learned a lot about bikes working on it over the years. It really is one of the best perchases I've ever made and hopefully it'll still be around for another 7 years.

    Thoroughly enjoying the retro rebuilds to the point where I've sourced my own project! I'm hitting a hurdle with replacing the rockshox judy T2 (straight steerer) forks with rockshox recon silver rl (tapered steerer). Do you know what bottom cup I would need?? The LBS isn't aware of any such products.

    Hi..great video..thanks. I have a couple of questions if I may? I have the exact same bike and have had it from new! Love it and cant part with it. Looking to turn into a 1x set up. Questions are: 1) did you change the BB for the conversion? 2) what do I need to look out for in terms of chain ring and chain line for the 1x? 3) What mech did you end up with for the cassette? Thanks

  • @buua4297
    @buua4297 3 роки тому

    Why tf are you greasing seat tube? Your post will slide down, you're gonna tighten it more and something will finally break. You should put carbon paste there. It won't seize + you won't have to tighten it this much.
    You also should put some grease on driver body so it won't seize up. Except these things it looks really good and I like it

    I’ll give you a tip or two though you need more- you don’t ever spray above or below a certain temperature you most definitely never spray above a certain humidity level Eg 40% Oh and you are meant to do 3 coats not a wishy washy spray pattern that you constantly do in all your videos but don’t worry most amateurs do the exact same mistakes oh and when you do graphics then a clear finish coat either gloss satin or matte you sand you first coat down to smooth all the previous layers decals graphics down then final thick coat 👌🏻 I say this to you because I like your colour and graphics choices etc just let down by your hmm technique or lack there of.
    You’re “bummed” by the primer! It’s because it was meant to go onto a bare metal not a painted surface that’s simply been sanded/ keyed. Your disappointment in your paint work might (when I say might I mean it is) to do with all of the above mentioned.
    Oh and yes your chain is clearly way too short that’s an easy fix. Which bring me to a question why is it most of not all your bicycle rebuilds involve removal of the dual or triple chainring with front shifter set ups to replaced by the single chain ring with a massive rear cassette. Is it no one knows how to select gears correctly it seems that way. The weight is minor, looks tidy but I just don’t get it.

      It was beyond my skill to revive for now. That big hole in the side scares me. It’s just one hard landing away from folding in half. Awesome bike though. Perhaps with a big AL patch welded on it could be saved.

    All I ride are vintage steel hardtails especially from the 90s. I have a a 97 Rocky Mountain Blizzard, 96 Diamondback Axis TR, 97 Rocky Mountain Altitude T.O., 99 Voodoo Bizango, 99 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo and a Dirt Research Kenai. All have that magic carpet ride feel of steel that I love. I also have a Schwinn Homegrown yeti designed bike that although made of aluminum rides like steel with the epicenter wishbone seatstays and 26.8 seatpost helps

      The local KSL classifieds is a great way to find good bikes for reasonable prices. The thrift stores, lake Deseret Industries, is a great place for project bikes like this one and the donor bike I used for a lot of the parts but expect to do work on what you find.

    I could watch your videos allday they inspire me. I've been watching your videos for a month. I have already collected 15 old steel bikes from the nineties . My wife is a little confused why I keep bringing them home. Picked up a Gary Fisher marlin today off of market place for $80 looks new. SCORE

    1 advice, I don't know if you do this but I'm gonna say it anyway maybe it helps, when you put primer on put 2-3 layers and wet sand it with 800 grit sand paper in between every layer including the last one ! The paint is going to stick to it much better AND when you put that many stickers and layers of paint, put on thick clear coat over it (or go with 2 layers of clear coat) and then wet sand the clear coat with 800 grit, that's going to remove the uneven surfaces that those stickers and multiple layers of different colors made. Then when you put on your last clear coat layer it's going to be smooth and shinny like a professional did it :D ! Again I don't know if you do all these steps or not but maybe it helps you on another build.

    I like watching your work. Every time you get to the painting the wheels come off for me. I have in mind a color & scheme & you do something totally different. And it turns out great. I like the way you wrapped the lettering around the tubes on this bike. I would never have thought of that. But I don't build bikes but I would like to. I envy all your great Park tools. I think you said you live in Utah, is that correct? Are you closer to Salt Lake City or Moab? Just curious. When you were riding @ the end of the video it looked like the west & nothing like KY where I live. It's all rolling land covered with bluegrass and trees here. I was supposed to take a vacation in Utah, Moab, Monument Valley & Bryce Canyon area but the stoopid zombie 🧟 viral Apocalypse made me postpone it until that’s over with. I'll get there. I bought a Santa Cruz Juliana for trail riding out there. I'm really stoked. Keep posting your awesome videos 📼 & I will keep watching and stay safe. 👍☮️🌞🦠😷🚲
