    I came from a poor family from the Philippines. Just borrowing bikes to ride. And seeing you rebuild this amazing bike always makes me Happy and satisfied. Thank you so much sir. I pray that god will give you and your family good health so that you can continously do what you are doing😭❣️, it inspires me a lot. Maybe it isnt my time yet. But someday I'll have my own😓

      G'day Ryan
      I love watching these videos too. Wish I had the skills to do what this man is doing. You've got good taste in hobbies. Hopefully one day God blesses you with some kids and a well paying job so you can do the same for your kids as what this is doing for his daughter. My sons would be pretty jealous watching this build. Luckily for me they're reading in their room.
      God bless.

    I was amazed that the 8 speed XT rear derailleur handled the 10 speed gearing.

    • @robaast
      @robaast 4 роки тому +6

      Same, but it does look like you had to add a derailleur hanger extender to get the clearance. When swapping to 1x the rear derailleur generally can compensate for the larger cassette because in total the difference between smallest and largest number of teeth is still fewer than even an old rear cassette with the triple front. Am I correct in that you did replace the freehub body?

      Here is a video that explains everything you need to know about cable pull ratios. Basically, you only need to change shifters, since almost all shimano derailleurs have the same cable pull ratio. The difference between the various is weight and quality in materials.

    I have been enabled by your videos to go after bikes again. I see bicycle maintenance as my form of fishing - a medium to sublimate and have time to talk. So this summer, I did something I haven't done for over a decade, Old shovel style: I found a bicycle that was the exact one I had over 40 years ago - a Huffy Santa Fe 10-speed with Positronic shifting. My daughter and I just spent the past 5 nights to do this: stripping it down, cleaning everything thoroughly budget style (using steel wool and gasoline to dissolve dried grease and clean the cables, and WD-40 on the frame and other parts. Touch up paint with leftover cans of whatever we had and rust reformer to the seat bracket. Lacquer spray covered all paintwork and it was near flawless (from 3 feet away so you don't see the brush strokes). Moly for all bearings, Teflon spray into the cable housings and all pivot points. We reassembled everything. The only thing new was one innertube to restore it to original condition. She took the maiden voyage up and down the culdesac which was the first and last time it would do so, because...
    Unfortunately, on my maiden voyage of about 10 feet, I shifted to low and the derailleur went into the spokes, bending the derailleur and drop out. It was late, dark and we were both tired. I was disappointed in what I did, so in my haste to try and remedy the damage, hammering and bending with large adjustible wrenches, my daugher was the one who reached over to me and said, "It was a great bonding experience". My daughter is awesome. She goes off to college in a week.

      Ouch but it t sounds like your daughter is awesome. I’ve done exactly what you’ve described. Sometimes we learn from our mistakes. It sounds like your limit screws needed to be adjusted to keep from overextending.

      Why is this good?

    • @Codename-B
      @Codename-B 3 роки тому

      @@somadenemma Because handlebar ends are usually sharp enough that in case of falling or crashing and falling into them will cause what is commonly known as "core sample". It will cut a cilynder out of you. That and the fact that can also poke a hole through rubber grips easily with use.

    Lovely bike. Lovely gift.
    I did a slightly earlier Kilauea for my son, now 24. It was a few years ago. The low aspect and the geometry of these Joe Murray frames were right at the time and are right to this day.
    Tough old bastards, too. I set my son's up as a 3x7, but I have a feeling he will be taking it (road use only) to 1x7. Great video.
    But seriously, stop telling people about early, rigid-fork MTBs... You will kill the chance of a bargain!! ☹️😀 cc

    This was awesome, but it brings up a bit of sadness for me. I had almost the exact same bike (Kona Cinder Cone -1 model down) with LX/XT mix with rigid Project 2 fork and stem, Richey pedals and Whale Tail brakes. It was mostly my townie bike with slicks, but it was a lot of fun on the trails too. Stolen right outside my front door. Looked like the same year (93 or 94 I think) with the same style decals but in that sweet light blue/teal color. Your daughter had a great smile when she rode it. I enjoyed this, thanks

    You got to use your new tools. I always look forward to your bike build/restoration videos. It takes me back to when I was in Grad school in the Midwest working part time at a bike shop. This was in the early 80’s. It was a Raleigh shop. We also sold Gitanes and Panasonics. Road bikes were the thing and an occasional touring bike with a triple. No real bikes with indexing then. But I did work on a bike once that a Campy Gruppo. The bearing races on the hubs were like glass. We were seeing some sealed bearing hubs and bottom brackets. This was pre-mountain bike days. That doesn’t seem like all that long ago. Some of the tricks of the trade haven’t changed much. It is fun watching what you do and the love you put into the bikes.

      Lol on the helmets. They do but I guess for that first test ride in front of the house I’ve been bad at having them put them on...

    That is a very nice retro bike, the SID forks were what all the pro XC riders were using in period (circa 98-2000), I hope your daughter understands how high end some of the stuff on her bike was back in the day...
    Great work.

    Reminds me of the gray '94 Kilauea I had over a decade ago. The rear chainstay broke so I got rid of it. Now I wish I had just had it repaired and kept it!

    Another interesting job. The colour for the wheels is a matter of taste. Thanks a lot, greetings Hermann.

    I've been buying up any old 90's Konas, Specialized and Marins I see on my local gumtree. Never pay more than between £20 and £50 for them. I have built up a 90's CinderCone, Fire Mountain, MuniMula, 3 Specialized Rockhoppers, 2 stumpjumpers and Marin Muirwoods and Bear Valley. All great bikes. I have to sell them this year though, getting too old to ride them. Love the videos.
