  • $25 dollars at the thrift store - it did not need much, new (old) tires, cables and housing and a bit of cleaning and grease. I gave it new life, and it looks AWESOME!

    Do you remember that the blue and yellow were the colors of Team GT in the mid- and late 90s? Thanks for “just” restoring it to its old glory and not resto-modding it, even if it was “just” an STX model.👍

    The amazing Shimano STX group from the 90s is today's Deore. Affordable and very durable groups, perhaps the best value for money. Great channel @oldshovel

      They had a line called DX when I first started too.

    • @cup_and_cone
      @cup_and_cone День тому

      @@johndef5075 DX didn't last very long, though...I think maybe three or four years at most. It was killed off the same time Shimano introduced STX/Alivio/Acera around '93 for their 'Ride Light' concept. And then a year or so later introduced LX and then STX-RC. I think at one time Shimano had at least 10 different levels of mountain bike groupsets being sold simultaneously! That just shows how MTB's were king of sales in the 90's. Of course STX/STX-RC was killed off when Deore launched in '00 with Mega 9. And then SLX replaced LX sometime in late 00's. It took Shimano a while to realize their groupsets were cannibalizing one another. In the late 90's there were like six IG groupsets on 8 speed that were completely interchangable with one another. Shimano had to eventually learn to differentiate some of their groupsets by speed/generation.

    Great video as always, but I hate to be a stickler for detail, but at 19:31, I noticed the outer chain ring was installed incorrectly. That pin that sticks out should be under the crank-arm. It's meant to keep the chain from binding up under the crank arm if it should slip off the ring.
    otherwise, I really enjoy your content. It was you videos that inspired me to restore an old Peugeot road bike that had been otherwise rotting away in my shed.

    • @newttella1043

      Also that pin ensures the ramps on the other side work properly when shifting onto the big ring and guiding the chain.

    19:30 That peg on the large chain ring indicates that the chain ring is on wrong (6 o'clock position). That peg should protect the inside of the crank. That ring should be turned around & moved a couple bolts clockwise, or how ever far it's off .

    Brings back memories. I never had STX grouppo. But I remember bike shopping with friends and seeing STX for the first time. A sales guy explained it sat between between Deore and LX. A great first time mountain biker's group set, as full LX was a bit pricey and considered the beginning of the racing level of components. Funny how seeing three letters can bring back so many memories.

    I have the matching jersey to that! Love it! I had a 91 Avalanche with U brake and a 94 Avalanche also. I think the late 80s early 90s GTs are the best looking hardtails ever. Especially the smaller frames. Look fast standing still.

    For those of us in our 40s, back when we were teenagers and this was new, if a friend had one (either bought by parents or saved up from summer job), we’d be green with envy. The 8 speeds (LX, not even gonna mention the other two as those are completely out of the budget) were unattainably expensive.

    • @oldshovel
      @oldshovel  2 дні тому +2

      For the steel frames in 95 the Tequesta was between the Timberline and the Karakoram. The timberline was spec’ed with an Alivio/STX combo, the Tequesta was full STX, and the Karakoram was full LX. I don’t think there was a steel XT build bike. There was the Aluminum Zaskar (xt build) and the Zaskar LE (XTR build). You could likely also get a Psyclone hand USA built steel frame set.

For those willing to spend hours driving around and $50 to $100 in gas, maybe you can find a deal. But when I try to stay within a reasonable radius of my central St. Louis County home? Bupkis. Nada.
