Beauty! I had a Cinder Cone (splatter paint and solid fork) until 2022. I brazed on rack mounts for panniers and rode it to bike tour North America, Europe and Japan over the decades. Last summer I rebuilt it and donated it to a bike charity (along with a Diamondback Viper BMX from my teenage years). I hope it’s next riders enjoy it as much as I did!
90s! Probably just my nostalgia but those were the best times for mountain bikes. I wish more folks would give these old bikes the respect they deserve. I walked into a bike shop on my GT LTS1 just looking for a cable and the kid looked at the LX shifter and said I wouldn't even know how to take that apart. How old is that? You should just get new components. HA! No, I just need the cable, I'll be installing it myself.
@@oldshovel Awe man, I didn't even give you the big thanks for bringing back so many good memories! You deserve it so THANKS! The frames I still see sometimes it's the old components are the real treat for me.
Thumbs up yet again. Half-way through I began to think that the bike was being pampered not just restored. Your workshop is a treatment room for bicycles. A place where they come for rest, recuperation and rehab. Just as people would go for a massage the bikes come in for a complete refit :)
Stuck at home with covid and can stop binge watching your channel, picked up a KHS descent and can't wait to start restoring it with a few modern touches.
You KILLED IT! That paint masking was fantastic! I couldn't agree more, those mid 90s konas were SO GOOD! This has got to be one of my favorite of your builds. I love the budget constraint. You killed it.
Those decals came up a treat! Especially like the Old Shovel text on the top tube 😃! An exceptional result. Another beautiful 90’s Kona given new life. These frames are very special indeed.
How’s the geometry on these bikes? I wanna build myself a nice 80s/90s mtb for cruising around, but since I’m having problems with my neck I can’t ride them in a stretched out riding position.. That’s the reason why I really lover modern enduro bikes, you sit very upright on them, almost like on a touring bicycle. Are there old mtbs out there with such a upright seating position or are all of them stretched out that you have to ride them with a forward leaned back and up bent neck? I know that’s a pretty weird and specific request, but maybe you could put me in the right direction..
Was nervous when I saw the old derailleur going on. Surprised it handles the wider range. Killer build as always. Someone give this channel a dropper post sponsorship!
Lol. Those droppers are hard to find for some of these older bikes. This one has an odd seat tube size of 27.0mm odd and hard to find I was happy to have this Thompson one that fit.
@@oldshovel 27.2? Or straight up 27? With the popularity of gravel bikes and people getting progressively rowdier on them I've seen some 27.2 droppers. Not cheap tho.

Maybe I have been missing out on build channels that go the extra mile, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen more impressive results from a goddamn shake can. Wow.
Wow! What an amazing rebirth. I have that exact bike and I bought it brand new in 1995. The bike shop installed Manitou shocks and damn I had da bomb of a bike. Still got her and she's for sale.
I wish other people felt this way about older bikes like this...I always have and enjoy rebuilding them and showing them on my channel. So many people think if you don’t have the latest bike then it’s garbage. I’ve never had a bike newer than 2004 which was a Kona Stinky I built. Keep it up...ps. it’s easier to put the wheel on if you leave one of the brake arms off until after it mounted ;)
Old Konas are my thing too. I have a 90's Cinder Cone and Lava Dome and have just treated myself to an 853 Explosif frame. The way they ride makes them my go to bikes in my "squadron".
This has literally inspired me to pull out my mid-90’s Rocky Mountain Hammer Race out of my parents’ shed. Now that I don’t live at home so I just don’t have the tools to do an overhaul on it. Guess I have to take it to a local bike shop. But what nostalgia these videos bring!

I've watched this video so many times. I LOVE this bike. That looks like a bike I would have a hard time seeing in my garage, and not jumping on it for a "quick" ride.
Georgeous, as always. I’m also a sucker for Thomson stuff. I just completed a budget build. I took a 2012 Trek hybrid and made it a gravel bike. I used some leftover stuff (wheels, mainly) and added a MicroSHIFT Advent drivetrain and an IXF crankset. The new stem was $16. Yup; $16. My handlebar wrapping actually looks OK. The bike is really not bad. Mechanically, I’m an idiot. Videos like this inspired and taught me. And, eventually, that budget build will be given away. But I’ll wait until I find someone who can really use it.
THAT is a beautiful build. Kona & Trek had the nicest frames of that time period to put new school bits on. I came across a Kona Explosif that someone threw out. I gave it to my riding buddy and he rebuilt it nice.
