    I'd recommend getting the arri isolator cable or a shielded cable for the camera, 12G ports can be problematic and can end up shorting your camera and monitor if you go accidently don't plug and power up and down the correct way.

    This is a fantastic video, and very similar to the way I want to kit my new Komodo out. I was going with the Portkeys BM5 WR monitor, but will reevaluate based on your comments. Initially, I liked the idea of wireless connectivity. The biggest downside with your setup, I believe, is that I won’t be able to hot-swap batteries in the field.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому

      Hey Gary - thanks for stopping by!
      Port Keys monitor - it's not AWFUL - I think I was just suckered by the wireless functionality - given that I shoot with manual cine lenses, and keep 180 deg shutter there's not a great deal to change wirelessly - and it's often just quite simple to use the Komodo top screen. The monitor is very bright though which is good. However I find the BM has really intuitive menus and a clean, responsive UI - when you're in the heat of a shoot I just trust it more. My BM does have some iffy colour tint though, but I think it's from being knocked around a lot.
      Hot swapping - technically yes you can still do this, you can take a D-tap from the incoming battery (or some other power device) into the power port, remove existing battery, connect incoming battery to the v-mount, then remove the d-tap. I haven't tested this though and you would need to unplug SDI cables etc. when doing this.

    • @garybarnett893
      @garybarnett893 Рік тому

      @@EdProsser can you list the specific cables you used to the monitor. I assume I will need power (D-tap to the 4-pin aviation connector), and the SDI-to-SDI 12G for video). I’m thinking of a coiled cable for the monitor power, and a high-end SDI cable from SHAPE (right angle connectors). I’m also considering the new Meiji set of RF mount mini cine lenses with manual focus made specifically for the S35. I’m trying to stick with RF mount, even for my Canon zoom lenses.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому

      @@garybarnett893 hey yeah for sure - links to most of the stuff in description.
      12G SDI - Alvins Cables (your shape one should be good too).
      Power cable came with the monitor, but yes, depending on your monitor you'll need a d-tap or limo solution (or battery)- a lot of monitors ship power cables as part of package.
      RF mount - most lenses are quite expensive and will negate use of VND & ND adapters or focal reducers. Personally I work with a few cameras and prefer EF or PL so I can use lenses across multiple systems - or in the future if I move to a diff camera system. If you're not worried about this, the Meike could be a good solution.

    Dude a great effort and always a pleasure but once that zoom and magic arm came out it starting looking like a praying mantis. I think it was bothering you too. I have a vocas solution. A cage to accommodate their universal multi purpose base plate that in turn can accommodate the shoulder usbp-15. With a zacuto Gratical eye. For any Komodo shooter I would say it’s the only pro way forward for shoulder rig but the Gratical is borderline ok. Something more oled like the Kameleon would be better but just ridiculously expensive. Wishing someone would re release something like the side finder. Likewise the vocas system cage has support for the canon speedbooster and pl adapter. With shoulder rig in mind it makes no sense to invest in the red side handle if you prefer integrating a cine set up with something like a Tilta m system and grip into the rig. That way you can add moose bars to your rails and you’re off to the races on the shoulder. I tried the vocas system with a lot of cameras and it works a treat on most but it’s particularly cute with the Komodo and gets you into vct. Not sure what part of town you’re in but if you ever want to hook up and compare notes let me know. I’m in e3. Meanwhile thx.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому

      Thanks, I don't shoot shoulder mount much which is why I don't want an expensive EVF, there is a Port Keys EVF I've seen but still expensive.
      Something that will extend a monitor out would be okay and I have an old shoulder rig already.
      The magic arm and zoom - meh - not ideal but had one laying around unused and atm better to save the money until I get a better feel for how all the parts work together. Will probably NATO clamp it to the left side of the cage or something with a quick release system to strip it off quickly.

    • @KenFlanagan

      @@EdProsser rigging is never quite what you’d hope it might be. Surprising how poor some of the solutions out there are given how simple things seemed before. Can’t remember the last time I got excited by a solution, except maybe the c500ii with vocas shoulder rig and canon evf. That was how things should be. I guess what I have works fine but at that level with the c500 it’s a £4.5k evf. Maybe more but it was so much fun to shoot with. Anything else just isn’t good enough or well integrated to make the spend worth it. No idea why evfs are so ridiculously expensive. Meanwhile good luck on that rigging journey.

    Yo coool video! In terms of cage/baseplate I’m really looking into getting the Bright tangerine one, low profile and the cheese plate option on the side seems like it can be clutch when mounting wireless transmitters..the baseplate also seems good and gives you proper height for mounting matteboxes

    hey it would be cool to see the whole setup with matte box, mics connected (shotgun + lav mic for example) and which lenses. Also how you are pulling focus without impacted the stability of the camera would be useful to see as whenever you use just the lens to pull focus it can jolt the camera. thanks!

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому +1

      All good points - I actually have a manual follow focus, which I attach to rails going into a fairly shitty small rig base plate (or I use my old shoulder mount for the baseplate for now) - which is a temp solution for now, so I need to sort that out properly before I recommend something! Same with mattebox
      The camera is heavy enough to also make manual focusing on the lens by hand pretty stable - if it's hand held there's gonna be some movement anyway.
      Lav mics will slot into top handle cold shoe.

      Yeah, the F3 - so far - is an amazing little recorder. I have a few recorders but they're all bulky big things that aren't easy to operate from a solo operator perspective.
      The F3 is so simple to work with - has decent battery life and really good audio quality. The only downside is lack of timecode compatibility (I think) with the Komodo - but when I use timecode it's usually with a sound op anyway + syncing up audio in modern editors is real easy these days.

Especially for fast turnarounds and instances where I need to playback the footage with audio. How good is the F3 3.5mm audio out to Komodo 3.5mm in? Is there proper gain staging where you could get away with delivering footage with direct audio via this method? I'm asking because you state "ok for scratch audio" about this in the video. Cheers

      I guess you'd lose the 32 bit float benefit when taking into Komodo as you'd be limited by the Komodo input gain.
