In this video I put the Pyxis through some initial testing to get a feel for this new box-style cinema camera and how it compares to my RED Komodo and LUMIX cameras. Blackmagic loaned me this camera - this is not a sponsored video and no money has changed hands. They didn't get to review this video before it went out. Bro just hired Charlotte Gainsbourg for a lens review, thats so dope! hahahah Amazing review man
you should really do a review of the zcam, either the F6 pro or the upcoming F6/S6 mak ii. Same sensor but formfactor is so much better than BM and with a Rvlvr handle it's almost like using a mirorless but with a cube. Best of both world.
nice always wanted to try a z-cam but don't come across them often!
Adding weight to your camera will also help to keep it more stable.
definitely true, but for the Osmo it's not that practical or worth it. I think you'd need a few KGs for that which makes more sense for a mirrorless, but less so for the Osmo.
For more stabilization during walking, use the ninja walk and be precise to keep your camera at the same height and don't shake it. For static shots create a stable shooting platform by resting your elbows against your body and use both hands. Any none mechanical stabilization will result in degradation of the image quality.
thanks, have been testing a new z-axis stabiliser that works pretty well, will have a vid on it next year
Controlling aperture with a firmware update? Don't you think it has a fixed aperture? It would be hard to add a mechanical feature with a firmware update
I have since learnt it's a fixed aperture yes!
Can it work on premiere pro?
the LUT pack will yes!
Did you use an adapter for ? djofilm
Really like your videos Ed. Thanks, I know it's a lot of work.
Thanks Chris!
Most importantly, BUY HIGH QUALITY ND FILTERS if you plan to shoot manual mode.
Waiting on that Osmo and and S9 long form video. 🎉🎉🎉🎉 please 🙏🏾
I did a few long form vids on the osmo - unfortunately LUMIX wouldn’t let me hold onto the S9 for more than a week so probably won’t be revisiting it
Love the video 🎉🎉🎉
is the open gate on s9 better then s5iix, is it 422 10 bit? because on s5iix its 420 10 bit, can any one clear this for me
I don't have an S9 but it should be exactly the same as the S5ii / S5iix - same sensor etc.
Really excellent review, minimum talking head maximum example footage, best explain of ISO ever, touched all the bases, image is everything really. Thanks very much!
Glad it was helpful, definitely the most ambitious camera review vid I've made to date!
This video helped out so much. Thanks!
Awesome, that's what I like to hear!
The issue I have with the highlights is it can be difficult to tell if the highlights are just hot or actually blown. Wish they'd add some exposure tools. The other issue is that the exposure does not seem to be predictable, at least I can't tell if a scene will need negative, positive, or no expsoure compensation to get it exposed properly.
if you use the app, you an get some exposure tools like zebras and histograms, but agreed would be great to get some on camera. I feel like I have a fairly good feeling of what will or won't be blown out without them tho, and some blown highlights are okay if we're talking naturally bright light sources etc.
The front USB-C is a 1080p wired output with 2 way OS control (Pyxis monitor only). The SDI/BNC signal out of the back of the camera, to record up to 4K on the VA in ProRes or BRAW. The USB-C on the back of the camera is up to 6K wired data output for SSD recording, and a wired output for "Cell Phone to Cloud 1080p Proxies or Streaming" (depends on 'phone) with free app and storage. Over-all, there is also a iPhone and Android Remote "Camera Control" app via Bluetooth - $17 (OS menu only, no visuals). The LAN is the fastest transfer method (no expensive CFexpressB Card Reader needed). Laptop, Network Scan, Browser, Copy and Paste. $5 CAT cable. LAN Cloud and Livestream too.
Well done Ed, very well presented, great tips and letting others know what we really use on set is priceless. Just about all of your tips apply to both stills and motion. Keep up the good work.
At least you're rocking Caleb's v-mount lol
yeah that was an absolute accident on my part, small rig had sent me it to test it out and didn't realise there was such beef between these cine back things
great and very helpfull video. and really great music! are these „real“ songs (I mean, could I listen to those on spotify)?
Music is all from Epidemic Sound and Audiio music libraries !
wow, some of the tunes sound like “real” jazz recordings
@@nobit3000 yeah love my jazz, Epidemic in particular has a great selection of Jazz library music.
Stay away from cheaper batteries for Blackmagic cameras period. I had to spend $500 on internal replacement parts for a BMPCC 4k from using cheaper batteries.
Amazing video ! Are you using a fixed ND filter or variable one ? What do you recommend ?
I use a fixed, the quality is better even if it is less versatile... but it'll depend on your preference if you don't want to swap filters on and off with changing light levels a VND can add convenience
THIS is the review that I’ve needed to hear. I’ve watched so many videos and only this hit every question I had almost as I had them. Thank you!
Amazing, got a few more vids in the work on this camera!
@ I’ll definitely be watching I need all the info I can get :)
Videos like these make me think S5iix over fx3
both great options!
are these slow motion shots filmed in 60fps or 24fps?
50fps slowed down to 25 I think
Great video - subbed 🫡
thanks!
Great video overall. I gotta snag some of those core bpu batteries
thanks man, yeah, you can get a nice small rig with some high capacity BPUs
Great video! Although I agree with you that the Komodo has a certain texture over the pyxis , sometimes it could be a bad thing. The Komodo texture can be filmic, however, on skin, I’ve noticed that the red Komodo accentuates skin texture and poor skin more than any other camera I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s weird. I don’t know it makes people skin look bad. This is where the Alexa really shines. I know it’s a way more expensive camera, but it has magic and the way it render skin.
I've not noticed the Komodo making skin look bad, I find it's the opposite!
Thank you Ed you gave me so much inspirations for tools and new ideas by watching this video, your channel in general is inspirational and i really admire your work, thanks man.
that's really nice to hear! glad to be of service
The prices for scrims and flags are insane.
That's why DIY solutions will always be cheaper - the moment you slap purpose made for production on it, prices jump. At a certain point though, having reliable battle hardy kit will be a better option than wrestling with janky DIY solutions!
@@EdProsser That sound like a prober interpretation of it. It just strikes me that companies like neewer or similar cheaper brands havent made any consumer versions of these.
@@johannesbgonzalez Godox have an affordable pack of scrims I think. But honestly I'd never really trust neewer stuff it falls apart quickly. The benefit of buying professional stuff is that it is designed to be punished day in / day out
I don’t know if you still have the Pyxis but my understanding is the second gain circuit is at ISO 1250 so that will give you the least noise over ISO 1000 and better than 3200, however 3200 is where you have most equal DR latitude in highlights/shadows there is a Blackmagic article on it somewhere. Likewise the lower base is 100 ISO but 400 gives most equal DR.
Exactly so it's up to you as the operator / DP how to capture the image, what you need to prioritise in it, very similar on my RED. I'd price baby recommend the 1250 if you have a darker scene, but you probably shouldn't be using the higher base ISOs to capture dark scenes.
Thanks Ed! You r making our lives easy!
Great stuff as always, Ed! Really appreciate the insight!
Glad it was helpful!
Really cool video!! Picked up myself a few bits from this list before the video came out so deffo need to go back and get some other bits you mentioned 🙏
What was your color management settings on this one?
The one thing that surprises me about this camera is that it has 3/4 of a stop less dynamic range than the lumix S5IIX according to CINED’s testing while having essentially the same sensor…..but I guess the B raw highlight recovery helps with that.
I don't know if they're comparing it to the internal S5iix recording, I assume so, but it's probably something to do with the fact that the LUMIX has more internal image processing on the camera side such as noise reduction etc... whereas the PYXIS does not have that with BRAW so that burden is on the user to apply their own denoising etc.
@yeah….thats probably It…..s5IIX was shooting vlog and PYXIS WAS SHOOTING BRAW…..
Thanks Ed, really useful (one day!)
Very useful thanks
great list! thanks for the effort and sharing. may i suggest: clothes pins, garbage/trash bags-both white and black, a roll of black electrical tape, bungee cords, painter's tape which sticks but can be removed without harm to the painted surface. thumbs up.
Clothes pins are good one, not considered those! All great suggestions!
And wooden clothes pins don’t melt! 👍🏼
@@smalltalk.productions9977 very true - although I'd be hesitant using wood against very hot lights!
