I would’ve taken that nice Tecumseh engine off, saved the wheels, blade and rear gearbox and some other hardware then scrapped the deck. A compromised deck like that is not safe to use and should be taken out of service. I’d look for another Lawnboy or Toro deck in good shape to put that engine on. These were great mowers and they generally last a good long time but when grass is left stuck to the deck this is what happens. Great video, thanks!

@@mjg263 We used to go to small towns in my area, drive up & down the alleys to look for old lawn mowers setting in tall weeds behind people's houses. When we found one, we would go to the front door of the house & ask the homeowner if they would like to sell their old mower. Many forget that they had an old lawn mower in their backyard! Anyway, we'd offer them $3.00-$5.00 for the mower & they were happy that someone took it off their hands. I thought this was a lot of fun. But you don't see too many old lawn mowers setting in people's backyards nowadays.

You might be able to find one of these in the scrap yard and use it’s deck, or you could at least salvage the engine and swap it with a mower that has a blown engine. This engine seems to be well taken care of and it still has plenty of life in it

Have you removed the blade driver assembly from one these lawnboys or a toro? Any good tips or tricks removing without beating on it? I’ve sprayed some pb blaster on the shaft and letting it work it’s way down. Thought about using a claw puller but not certain it will have an effective bite given how the driver slides on. Apparently they have a spacer the size of coin within the driver.
Also if the drive shaft is bent would that mean the Woodruff key needs changing as well?

Great work, I recently got a Lawn Boy for free, it has the older style deck with the offset front wheel but is powered by a 4 stroke Tecumseh engine and is rear wheel drive self propelled. All of the accessories were with it too, the side discharge plate, bagging plate, mulching plate which is already installed on the mower, 2 original bags and the hangers for the bags. The engine already ran and the mower is in good shape, all I had to do was replace the self-propelled cable because it was broken. It's amazing what people give away, keep up the great work!

Lawn Boy Mowers used to be a quality product. I have one of the commercial series. But even the homeowner models came with a magnesium deck and a 2 stroke engine. Back some years ago Toro lawn equipment wanted to enter into the Big Box Store market. They didn't want to cheapen the Toro mower or have their name on a mower sold there so they bought Lawn Boy from OMC and totally cheapened the brand. My Lawn boy is going on 20 years old and it still looks and runs like new. I've got a brand new in the box short block for it should the original engine wear out.

My current lawnmower is a 3 horsepower Briggs and Stratton powered Supa Swift Lawnmower which my auntie gave to me in 2008 as someone gave it to her with a broken pull cord on it which I just reattached the handle to.
The deck is aluminium so I don't have to worry about rust :-
    ua-cam.com/video/vkn-M8eTlpc/v-deo.html
I would keep that lawnboy motor in the video for another lawnmower because its compression appears to be really good,it looks like a Tecumseh engine & it has a far higher compression reading than my Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine does which is 75 PSI & I've replaced the piston rings & relapped the valves into their seats, they suggest doing a cylinder leakdown test on their engines since they don't release any official compression figures.

No, Not only would I be concerned that removing the grass clippings from the deck would further weaken it but I also wouldn’t have wasted any time or effort on that deck. As a matter of fact, had the deck required ANY new part purchases at all, I would have just removed the motor, stripped any good parts off the deck and handle bars, and just scrapped the deck. In my opinion, a mower like this would really only be good parts for another good deck, as I would be concerned that someone might eventually be hurt trying to force a badly rust deteriorated deck back into service. That said, the effort here was worth it to determine that your engine is good.

I would take the engine off and save it for a future motor swap.
