Thank you for the video! I have the same mower that had same problem, which I fixed after watching your video.
On my particular lawn boy push model with self propelled, I wasn't getting spark and pretty much followed the steps in this video. Even went as far as lightly sanding the contacts ( didn't have a spare coil at the time) But upon my diagnosis I followed a wire running basically from the coil back to where the bagger/safety flap that is inserted in the back where debris and safety feature is so nothing comes shooting out at user. Well on this model, the lever that gets turned and secures the inserted piece makes contact above and lower which makes a ground and enables the mower to spark and start. If its not properly set and/or doesn't make a good connection, ie dirt, rust whatever it acts as an open and prevents the mower from starting. It's almost like not having the bar depressed when starting. I double check this with the mower running and carefully tried to open the lever and tried to take out this piece. Upon doing so engine dies and kills it. Just thought that if someone has a similar model that doesn't start, check and make sure you have this piece properly set and secure or your mower won't start.

Great job, solid diagnosis, the guy that commented he's only replaced 3 coils in 60 years? This is the same guy that commented on my carb videos about only having to replace 3 carbs in 60 years 😂😆😂😆😂
I've been at it less than a year, And Already replaced three carbs. Of course these are extremely old mowers. But you can see the damage inside of them. So far zero coils, As most of them are points systems. I can get away with a cleaning. Not that i'm saying he's right. I think it's more luck at this point.
Nice fix DW6. You’re right about those spark testers. I wish they would make one that emitted a tone of some kind when there is spark, like when you use your multimeter. to check for continuity - would make it a lot easier, lol.

Of all the brands of mowers I've worked on over the years, Tecumseh's are far and away the brand that has had the most coil failure. The rest of the engine is well made.
17 people apparently hate to learn, they have to criticize the man, it works so what exactly are these people dissapointed about. SMH
Mine was the magnetic "fail safe" at the back. I just had to "seat" the rod, and that was it.

Nice simple, straight to the point video! You could have checked the coil with a multimeter. It is always advantageous to save some parts for a rainy day! Curdos to you!

Ohm out the coil, good coil should read about 3.5 to 5.5 ohms. Lawnboy mowers are known to have coil issues. Replaced one this year on a 4-stroke Lawnboy.
I have this same model of lawnboy and I am having an issue with it going full throttle and I can't seem to get it to lessen unless I reach down and manually flip the throttle piece on the carb .... how do I fix this issue? I just replaced the carb on it and I believe I rehooked up everything I was supposed to
mine did exactly what yours does when you forgot to attach the kills switch but no spark when connected. so should be a ground issue?

Hey we all have screw ups when working of these small engines - no big-e . Good video there .....
First thing is to check for spark. However I find that almost always it,s carburation so I squirt some gas in the spark plug hole or the intake and if it pops it's got spark. saves a step. oh and I miss the kill wire sometimes but I'm a pretty hansom guy too. Tiss the cross we bare!

Hi! Thx for the nice video. I am just asking to help me a bit. There are two wires coming out from the Ignition Coil. One is long and the other one is short. The question is where the short one is connecting from another side? I just can see it's going up under the rotor but I don't the connector of the spot. Maybe you have a picture of this?
Got an old 1978 2 stroke lawn boy that says it needs a 32/1 mix. With the newer oils out now could I go 40/1 or should I stick to 32/1. What's your thoughts on that?
not always a dead short like this. my 18hp kohler vtwin was popp'en/backfiring/no power both coils tested high 14ohms. $90 for 2 new coils each tested 3.7ohms works good now

Hey I can beat forgetting to connect the kill wire - yesterday I was working on a Toro with the same Tecumseh engine and after putting it all together I went to connect the spark plug wire and realized I had forgotten to put the coil in! 🙄

that mower has a wired 2nd ignition cutoff if the bag is not attached. silly design but there beacuse there is no rear shoot cover.
Al's Repair and Restoration they came with a plug
THEMOWERMEDIC1 yes that's right but either the bag or plug have to be on to get a spark.

try using sandpaper on the contact points of the flywheel and the coil they might just be rusty . edit : just/only
