This free LawnBoy mower doesn't want to start and the reason is extremely uncommon. The fix was fairly easy though.

The strength of this video was the excellent closeup and explanation after 5:27 of the correct choke linkage geometry and how to accomplish it. The issue crops up whenever the carb has to be removed for any reason. The throttle linkage is easy to take off and put on, but it's easy to forget how to do the choke linkage if you don't do it all the time. Not a user friendly design, in my opinion! And the bolt spacer is another problem: The spacer appears to drop out of nowhere, so thanks for the reminder of its proper placement.

Lawnboys were made at the OMC plant in Petterborough Canada. They designed and built their two cycle engines in house, and built them tough like an outboard motor. A great majority but no tall used a magnesium frame for lightness, aluminum for rough service commercial and the last of the cheap ones had stamped steel ( stamping were farmed out to MTD ).
I don't know about the USA but you could buy a Viking at Eatons and it was a black and yellow Lawnboy. You could buy a brown Mastercraft at Canadian tire and it was a lawn boy too.
But this thing is not a Lawnboy.
This thing you see before is a ghost.
The frame is stamped by who knows out of cheap tincanium and the engine is a Chinese copy of a Honda GXV 140 engine. The trade mark Lawnboy was bought by Toro when OMC went bankrupt in 1990.
Chinese engines are much maligned, but they do not deserve it keep them clean change the oil and take care of it and its a pretty good engine for the price.
Stamped steel frame will need attention to keep it from rusting out.
Wheels are pretty cheap be prepared to replace them as they wobble and wear out.
Buy a good blade keep it sharp.
      But its not a Lawnboy.

I had an old 2 stroke Lawnboy mower back in the 60s. The muffler was under the deck so it was very quiet when in grass. The discharge chute was at the front edge of the deck with the RF wheel behind the chute. No self propel, but it was so light that you didn’t really need it. I loved the sound it made. You could push the front of the mower up to a fence and cut within an inch of it. Great mower!

I had a passed down Lawnboy that was about 12 years old. I used it on my lawn for about 5 years and didn’t really take care of it like I should. I even used it to cut 3-4 lawns weekly for about 2 months before buying a commercial mower. I still used it until I sold it. This thing was solid and never ever had an issue with it.

Hey, HG. Always nice seeing your videos. About that trimmer I rebuilt - Yep, I screwed up. Not only did I not clean the carburetor properly the first time (as evidenced by the chunks of garbage I found on one of the diaphragms), but when I did properly clean it, I got the spray on the diaphragm and ruined it! It floods itself now.
Lesson learned, but at least I got the experience. It helped a lot getting the general idea and learning to tune from your videos.

To fix It depends on mower shape and quality. Believe me a lot of people do stupid things with them, put wrong fuel, never change oil or do it in a wrong way, store it in a wrong way, newer do any maintenance and cleaning. I got old Viking MB410 mover from my neighbours for free, pull-start was missing as they tried to fix it but thrown away with no luck. It had sheered key that's why it broke a starter. Bought new starter and reinstalled new flywheel key for 30$ and it runs like new. Since I never had a lawn mover and was willing to get one its a steal because a new one costs like 300$ or more.

Thanks. This helped but I also had to drain the stale gas that was in the carburetor gas reservoir bowl - did this by temporarily disconnecting the gas feed line and then unscrewing the bolts on the bottom of it and letting the old gas flush out.

I don't get the hate on anything just because it's old or slower, someone else can find use for it.

Wife mows with a 70s 21" brick top. I fix and sell mowers she says they are too heavy

Honda engines are nearly bullet proof. LawnBoy mowers are now 'entry level' products if even still available. Better off with a Toro.

If I couldn't get a Honda, then yes, I think I would go for a toro.

I don’t see why Toro is bothering to keep Lawnboy alive anymore. That is what they are at this point, a rebranded Toro

Another great video, thanks. IMO, Lawn Boy made some great dependable, easy to fix mowers until they were purchased by Toro.
