Rodney is so underrated. He makes it look effortless, the hallmark of a master indeed. Second time watching this, still enjoy it. The way he sits behind the kit is unusual, but it just works for him. And the economy of cymbals he uses but gets the all the sounds he needs - just great stuff here..
He's not even remotely underrated. He's a grammy award winning drummer who's played at MD fest 2005 and recorded with various artists. Underrated is a an overused word.
Rodney is a true gift. Criminally underappreciated as he doesn't get the notoriety like the Donatis, the Moores, or the Weckls, yet has immense talent for music, pocket awareness for progressive rock, and creativity in fusing drum patterns. Always a fan. 🤘🔥
This guy is an exceptional songwriter on top of his incredible drumming. 12 months of october is an album I still listen to to this day. Phobos is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard!
Rodney is a force of nature. The thing I love about him is that he's so technical AND musical. Usually you get one or the other. And he writes amazing music!
Damn, this dude is so thoughtful and humble and introspective. And unbiased as well. Him mentioning the early love for Neil Peart and Rush and understanding that different kits work for different people's visions is refreshing, versus having some close-minded attitude like "Buddy Rich only played on a 4 piece" or crap like that. His intellect is refreshing. I play extreme metal but this is one guy I definitely want to check out, especially since I have never heard of him until now.
Mind blowing in every way... THEN after monster soloing - 4:45 brings this tasty and siiiiick just straight rock groove that just brings the listener back down to earth for a moment only to be taken up to drum heaven again and through to the end. This drummer is other-worldly!
I remember witnessing Rodney whith Clyde Criner at Fat Tuesday's in the '80s. He was under age and had his mother there!!!!! But I was BLOWN AWAY at his thunderous and rhythmic skill. His runs sounded like machine guns!!!!!!
What a humble but out of this world player, I have watched Rodney for years I wish I could get lessons with him. He is musical, fast, smooth, crazy feet technique and a pleasure to watch. God Bless you Rodney and if you are ever in the UK I would love to meet up and learn from the master.
Rodney Holmes and Drumeo is the PERFECT MATCH !! I saw him live with Michael Brecker about over 25 years ago. Then, with Santana !! I was able to talk to him after the Brecker concert at the Louisville Jazz Festival and he could not have been more nice!! He was so humble!! We talked for about 25 minutes. A really nice guy !! KEE UPTHE GREAT WORK DRUMEO!!!!
Never learned so much about drumming in 20 minutes!!! I didn't know Iv'e been listening to this genius almost all of my life...it's no wonder he's played with some very notable and down artists. I thought was listening!?...I will most definitely keep my ears open for Mr. Rodney Holmes from now on!!!
I know (intentional) Rodney Holmes only from his performance on the Modern Drum Festival 05 dvd. and that solo blew me away. I never saw anything else from him, but it stayed on my Mind and i rewatched the DVD only for him many times. So im Very happy to see him here!
That 2005 cowbell groove will always be the first thing that comes to mind when I think of him. That blew me away then, and still kills me when I go back and re-watch.
I remember seeing him back in the day when he played with Steve Kimock, in Trenton, NJ at an old club known at the time as The Conduit! Amazing talent...
I find myself smiling a lot watching this. Incredible playing. Seems like such a top dude too. 24 mins, his fav paradiddle demo, wow. Oh, and the 7 8 groove. So fluid. 43.40 waaaaaa
A truly amazing player.. making everything look effortless. Had the pleasure of conversing with Rodney a while back, a genuine and incredibly humble man.. a true gentleman and master at his craft.
groove...musical drummer...knows when to lay in pocket...topcu and feel is all that matters after you develop your core technique...love the opening tune. perfect drum sound and cymbals...hat, snare, bass drum so well balanced sonicwise. his cowbell groove is INSANE! youtube it...
Holy note density batman! Love those rolls across multiple drums w. the dbl kick. Rodney is a great example of when good drummers become good musicians. He drops some great wisdom too for anyone who's paying attention & listening intently. Very happy to learn of Mr. Rodney Holmes.
I love Rodney's playing since I first saw him on the MD fest DVD 2005, as others! His spectrum ride is one of my favourites! I actually never noticed he's sitting so far left until this Drumeo video. As a drum teacher I guess he may have started very young and little, and the snare was just too large in diameter for his legs, as it is the case for many kids. My students also tend to put the snare very far to the left. I guess Rodney just got used to it and made it work (and how he made!!!). He also sets up his toms remarkably high, I realized that in the 2005 DVD. But that's the beauty of this instrument: Everyone can set up his drums as he wishes, and abilities like Rodney's should quickly silence any critics. Thanks for your inspiration Rodney, and keep it up!! May you stay inspired, too!!
41:28 - About as unorthodox as you can get with foot to bass pedal position. Yet it works for Rodney. He's unique and in my top five favorite drummers today.
I've never heard of him but he's a PLAYER sheesh. If you're worried about his setup over his skill set then we probably can tell exactly where YOUR skill set, approach, etc are... Great job Drumeo!
if you want to record yourself and evaluate the results its fine, the sound in this video on todd and others is killer and they adapt to any players sound, they own there craft and i would like to know more about there aproach
What an interesting technique. French grip on the dominant and traditional tells me he likely learned from a jazz player, but the high hi-hat is either to reduce recording bleed or from punk roots, which could be a very interesting difference between styles. The weird foot thing could just be preference, but my bet it’s also with the function of reducing mic bleed by a fraction
I believe that the high position of the hi hat gives him more freedom of motion with the left hand while his hands are crossed..I do the same thing with my setup
Gabe Romero Yes, it is. The human ankle has very little tilt in that direction and you never move it that way in 99.9% of scenarios where your feet are concerned. That's also happens to be the same tilt you hold someone in an ankle lock. You don't even need to go that far. The guy even has to support his right knee against the snare drum to maintain his foot in that position when playing fast stuff.
@@mcsequoia5107 I just started playing the drums and I actually think this is quite awesome. I feel way more comfortable playing the ride then the hihat because of the not crossing. I think it's something similar to trying out new tunings on guitar and I'm very glad I followed your link because I didn't thought of that stuff by myself :D
I remember when I was younger I was angling my foot on the board. It seemed to ad leverage and the beater can come back father without hitting yourself with the beater.

One of my biggest influences. Everytime I watch him playing reminds me why I love this amazing instrument.
Rodney is a true gift. Criminally underappreciated as he doesn't get the notoriety like the Donatis, the Moores, or the Weckls, yet has immense talent for music, pocket awareness for progressive rock, and creativity in fusing drum patterns. Always a fan. 🤘🔥

This guy is phenomenal! AND he plays traditional grip -killer style, very unique. He's got a great groove, time and chops.
Maybe the single most underrated drummer of this generation, One of the baddest ever!
Most definitely, a teacher of the art!!
Dave's giggle at 11:42 is priceless, and perfectly sums up my reaction to that little demo. WOW! That was cool! Rodney is awesome.
Wow. I’m so glad I’ve found this guy.
I’ve never seen anyone play with this much force and precision while playing traditional grip. Taking notes
Mind blowing in every way... THEN after monster soloing - 4:45 brings this tasty and siiiiick just straight rock groove that just brings the listener back down to earth for a moment only to be taken up to drum heaven again and through to the end. This drummer is other-worldly!
Correction, at 4:35 !! 😉
This was a really great episode, Rodney is such a unique and creative drummer and he's one of my new favorites.
I remember witnessing Rodney whith Clyde Criner at Fat Tuesday's in the '80s. He was under age and had his mother there!!!!! But I was BLOWN AWAY at his thunderous and rhythmic skill. His runs sounded like machine guns!!!!!!
I discovered Rodney when I bought Clyde Criners 'Behind the Sun', he was the featured drummer along with Omar Hakim, both were superb.
he plays the music with the senses and with the soul as a whole! Bravo
This drummer is one of the best ever!!! Thank You Rodney Holmes!
Agree
So love his music, let alone how he plays! Such a musical player.
What a humble but out of this world player, I have watched Rodney for years I wish I could get lessons with him. He is musical, fast, smooth, crazy feet technique and a pleasure to watch. God Bless you Rodney and if you are ever in the UK I would love to meet up and learn from the master.
This is probably my favorite drum solo since I started playing drums about 6 months ago. love this grove. Goals to play like this. Unbelievable.
Great call to have the one and only Rodney Holmes on your show. Such an amazing drummer! That was a treat!
Rodney Holmes and Drumeo is the PERFECT MATCH !! I saw him live with Michael Brecker about over 25 years ago. Then, with Santana !! Can't believe I watched the whole thing At 4am.
And enjoyed it. His musicality and Fluidity were mind blowing .
One of my favorite drummers you've had onto date. His grooves are insane! The ghost notes are haunting my mind!
Such a tasteful drummer. Freaking love this guy.
Articulate, thoughtful, and an total bad ass on the kit. That first groove is off the charts! I'm lovin' this guys chops and feel. Way to go Drumeo.
One of the greatest....best grooves and drum solos you can ask for...
The most underrated drummers ever.
By who?
People who's ratings you respect?
I agree

Lee McAdams
hence the word intentional!
lol
I remember seeing him back in the day when he played with Steve Kimock, in Trenton, NJ at an old club known at the time as The Conduit! Amazing talent...
This is the coolest player drumeo has had in a while. What a legend. And how cool is Ghost?
I find myself smiling a lot watching this. Incredible playing. Seems like such a top dude too. 24 mins, his fav paradiddle demo, wow. Oh, and the 7 8 groove. So fluid. 43.40 waaaaaa
A truly amazing player.. making everything look effortless. Had the pleasure of conversing with Rodney a while back, a genuine and incredibly humble man.. a true gentleman and master at his craft.
I haven't watched Drumeo in a long time. I like the new intro 👌
Aww Man! It's great to see a newer video of him jammin! Because of him, 3yrs later, I'm still playing my "13 Spectrum Hats!
groove...musical drummer...knows when to lay in pocket...topcu and feel is all that matters after you develop your core technique...love the opening tune. perfect drum sound and cymbals...hat, snare, bass drum so well balanced sonicwise. his cowbell groove is INSANE! youtube it...

Wow, talk about free and relaxed drumming. This was a great drum education for players old and new.
amazing lesson! Rodney's feel is very sweet and effortless!! and also I love Dave as a host! :) :)
That song in the beginning was amazing...not just the drumming the actual composition was so good
I have followed rodney for years he is abundantly talented and musical another great guest guys
I love Rodney's playing since I first saw him on the MD fest DVD 2005, as others! His spectrum ride is one of my favourites! I actually never noticed he's sitting so far left until this Drumeo video.

Awesome lesson! Rodney has been one of my favorites for a long time.
41:28 - About as unorthodox as you can get with foot to bass pedal position. Yet it works for Rodney. He's unique and in my top five favorite drummers today.
Apart from being a great drummer, Rodney seems like a really humble and down to earth guy
I set up my kit this way for my last 2 gigs, wowzers! I’m a convert. Body stays open, way more comfortable.
I've never heard of him but he's a PLAYER sheesh. If you're worried about his setup over his skill set then we probably can tell exactly where YOUR skill set, approach, etc are... Great job Drumeo!
Damn this guy is one hell of an awesome drummer! In my dreams I can ever have his drumming skills. You go Rodney!!!
i want a video with the sound engineering team of drumeo...they always achieve a great sound...and killer fusion opening track from rodney
yannis I think a consumer could get similar results with a Sony a6500, a tripod, and a Rode stereo mic.
if you want to record yourself and evaluate the results its fine, the sound in this video on todd and others is killer and they adapt to any players sound, they own there craft and i would like to know more about there aproach
I second that
100% agree, the drum sounds always slay in these videos
They just started a new channel called "Recordeo" for that very reason. Check it out!

Some of his early discography includes guys like George Colligan and David Gilmore which definitely had a heavy Jazz/Fusion bend.
I believe that the high position of the hi hat gives him more freedom of motion with the left hand while his hands are crossed..I do the same thing with my setup
Antun Profeta oh man that’s a great idea! I gotta try that. Did you notice any significant drawbacks to that approach?
Not really..
Dear drumeo
thank you for inviting back an old dear friend of drummers into the younger generation's field of influence.
Great Drummer,Great Lesson! Nothing more, nothing less...
Rodney is so fluid and graceful around the kit.
Wow. He is a drum philosopher. cant wait too watch/listen more.
Great cut. I've seen him play this before. Great nuance's
Silky smooth, great control and cymbal strikes
Adding Personality To Your Grooves is exactly what I see! Great drummer!!!
The weirdest set up positioning i’ve ever seen. But looks like its working just fine for Rodney. What an amazing musician!
"The weirdest set up positioning i’ve ever seen." Really??? You apparently haven't seen Harry Miree's setup? ua-cam.com/video/4nR49qEdONs/v-deo.html
But isn't it bad ergonomically?
It's only bad if it doesn't support a person's physical attributes, playing style, habits, etc.
Gabe Romero Yes, it is. The human ankle has very little tilt in that direction and you never move it that way in 99.9% of scenarios where your feet are concerned. That's also happens to be the same tilt you hold someone in an ankle lock.

So fluid. Could watch this all day.
que músico extraordinário. Como soa suave e firme seu "playing". It's amazing!
'Bout time! Love Rodney! Very special drummer and person! Thanks for this!
He's so awesome I loved watching him on Modern drummer
He reminds me a bit of Tony Williams: grooves heavily with a jazz influence in a rock style. I.E. very fusion-esque
...great description and enough funk for stank face.
Watching this again...Rodney is stellar!
Every single note Rodney plays get its proper attention.
Killer Drummer, left foot heel toe skills are great so smooth and sideways bass drum foot long board pedals so cool, Thanks Rodney !!
probably the most "under the radar" awesome musician
The moment he said his main influences are max roach and tony williams, i realised why i love his playing
Man, I LOVE his style.
43:38 was amazing 😍😍😍
He looks younger as he gets older.
True!
Was not expecting to see u here my guy!
Rodney! He's up there with the very best of them
Magnificent Rodney Holmes!) Thank You, Drumeo!
I really love his playing, very inspiring
Dude has the weirdest set up I’ve ever seen but he’s killin. I guess whatever makes you comfortable 🤷🏽♂️
Kaleb Griffin I agree with you
🤔 weird how? he sits a little far left, but other than that, it seems relatively standard.
kodiak wild A little? Look at his right foot on the pedal, its from the side.
Richard Goldman i did see that later 😅 it's odd, but not drastic.
My back hurts only from looking at it already. But he plays beautifully. So, indeed, whatever works for him.
omg!!! thank you so much for this lesson!!! I immediatley have to wake the neighborhood up to get them hip to my new feel ;)
Totally awesome groves love the top hat signatures love all of his groves
If anyone wants to check out Rodneys fantastic playing . It would have to be the Hermanators . Phenominal playing.
Dude, that was sic. Awesome!
!!!!! been waiting for this one!!!!!!
L D foreal though welcome back homie he's a young of in the game he plays circles around modern pros he's like Stanley. Young cats don't know

Dude! i saw the live event, is was just waiting for this!!!
That frase at 57:20, so beautifully crafted :o
Those drums sound great!
This guy has amazing independence on the kit. I seen him in a Modern Drummer video.
rodney brings more musicality to the drums. the music is amazing
Man dudes technique is smooth.
Strange the way he sits at an angle from his kit.. But killer groove and feel and thats what its all about ... Nice .
Man those Tama's sound killer
sir, I think those are pearls, not tama's
he endorse Tama
Tama starclassics BB
Very interesting. Thank you😉👍👍👍
Parabéns pelo trabalho profissional 👏👏👏👏👏👏 toka muito sucesso sempre 👏👏👏👏👏👏 aqui 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🖐️🇧🇷🖐️🇧🇷🇧🇷
Love this concept!! Uses it a lot in my playing!!
I love his playing both technical/musical with groove and speed...In other words: This drummer has options and is flexible for music....:)
Do you guys at Drumeo like the new tommics???
Looking forward to watching this!
Great video, also what a great guy!
So this Master is drumming on AFRICAN SKIES by the Brecker brothers! Top ten fusion compositions ever.
Been following this cat for a while....awesome musician!!
I remember when I was younger I was angling my foot on the board. It seemed to ad leverage and the beater can come back father without hitting yourself with the beater.
Magnifical dear Rodney !
