Harvey has got a couple of things in his playing that almost none of the others have... subtlety and space. He's not afraid to let the rhythms BREATHE...unlike most if the rest who pile on the notes, filling up all the space. A master rhythm craftsman and somebody we should all pay attention to and learn from!
Exactly
24:07 That’s one of the most cleanest buzz rolls I’ve ever heard. Harvey’s just incredible!
Interesting fact: The Herbie Hancock album, "Head Hunters" (1973) was the biggest selling “contemporary” Jazz album of all time, until George Benson released "Breezin" (1976). The common denominator of both of these records is Harvey Mason, Sr. #provenhitmaker
And don't forget Donald Byrd's "Black Byrd" (1973), also a big hit!
I am pretty sure Miles Davis "Kind of Blue is the top selling jazz album of all time...
Roe Perk Yes!! Miles!! I believe I meant “contemporary” jazz album. I actually read that somewhere.
not to forget Lee Ritenours "Captain Fingers" from 1977... That blew us all from any sofas even in europe
His drumming on headhunters is why I'm here! 😅 An absolute legend.
His ghost notes are smooth as hell, on all drums, not just the sane drum. He makes one drum sound like several ones. I also noticed he switches from traditional do matched grip when necessary. Truly a great drummer. And overall very good lessons. :)
Dave Grusin, Mountain Dance album was where I first really listened to Harvey Mason.. my ears grew that day
Harvey Mason, you still got it, just blown away with your drumming!
Damn! Touched me from the first beat, this guy has deep emotion in each note!
.... intended to say Harvey Mason represents our instrument with class, professionalism and a spirit of giving that we should all strive to achieve.
This video reminded me that our instrument does not have to be molested to sound good. If I had a choice to study with anyone, it would be Mr. Harvey Mason.... Good job Drumeo - thank you Harvey
Nobody better than Harvey when it comes to finesse and pocket .. Amazing discography and still going strong 🙏🏼
He plays the way he communicates. Softly spoken and considered. No wasted words. He is a very musical and intelligent drummer. Thanks for another inspirational video. 👍🏻😁
Harvey Mason ,,wow, it doesn't get any better when it comes to making sense of the main role of playing drums, not about being flashy,,, just playing the music and making it sound great.. but the genius can be flashy too when the music calls for it. His drum sounds and textures are amazing.
Harvey is a legend....this man doesn't get the credit he deserves...if your a fan of steve gadd then you should you should be a fan of Harvey Mason because ...they have a similar style but Harvey influenced Steve and 1970s Harvey Mason was a monster no comparison his style of groove was ground breaking
Harvey, one of my favorite groove masters!! As most here, I discovered him through Herbie back in 73.
This interview really demonstrates his dynamics, touch, and musicality.
His touch is light but commanding. Still killin' it!
there’s so much to take in from harvey’s playing. i’ve learned an insane amount from this video.
I love Harvey! His drumming has inspired me to a world of micro dynamics. It's where the creative fun is.
I've been listening to Harvey Mason's work since about 1973 around the time when he appeared on the Herbie Hancock Head Hunters album. His body of work is staggering to say the least and this lesson was a sheer joy for me to watch. DAMN!!!
Like a fine wine.... wow. Love the Classics. and by that i mean, the "Classic Drummers'. Like Harvey. So understated, tasteful, elegant, and seasoned! best combination, right there!
His Solo toward the end of the Lesson is Creativity at its best . I wanna say he sees images pictures scenes . At least me he took into a Movie with his Solo . Inspirational !
A true artist, a true gentleman, so happy to see him here!
You listen to the same track of his 4 years prior, and you can tell the insane improvement he made upon himself since then. This man rolls ghost notes.......!!! Been playing that song since 1974. Is still working on it. If that ain't dedication...!!!
World Class drummer - Harvey Mason has and will always in all time be my fave drummer/musician. His playing in my earlier years (till today) has been a major influence and inspiration on how I approach any music I play today on the kit. So Righteous!!
Love listening to him talk. Such confidence and yet so relaxed. Not trying to prove anything, just solid chops, feel, groove, and an impressive pedigree that spans decades. Thanks Drumeo and thanks Harvey.
these 2 side snares sound soo dope!!!
One of my all time heroes. A true talent. Thank you.
One of The Best Studio drummers in the world.
A living legend! Grew up on An Evening with Fourplay DVD. He started my love for piccolo snare! :).
Thanks for the killer episode!
He’s scary good. I stopped to comment because I’ve been watching that dvd lately and will let it play in the background while doing chores. Amazing touch! One of the greatest ever.
Finally!!!!! Harvey Mason!!
Agree!
ԶԶ
Christian XianLeather Marsh
Yes!!!!!
Man I do agree with you 100% I really can't understand why it took Harvery Mason this long to show up... no matter what you say, Harvery Mason just did not realize he had a huge followers.
Man when I first heard him with Herbie Hancock, 73 or 74 ! I was like " who is this drummer that can plays in that time syncopation? Take Five, pops got a brand new bag, cold sweat the girl from Ipanema, all of these drums sycophants had a profound effect on lots of drummers in the funk and jazz world, but when I heard chameleon!! No! It must be a machine, yeah, a machine, ain't no drummer can play like that, that's impossible, where's the ONE, or the one-na- two-an - the excetera excetera, no it must be a drum machine, oh everyone knows Herbie Hancock is sorta of side ways with his music, Naaa, there ain't no drummers who can play like that.
Wow . Now that’s what I call smooth and steady. Nicely done . Kit sounds amazing . Playing was how it should be !!!!
THE KING of groove, sound and taste. Thank you, Drumeo - Another great one!
Outstanding. Art meets drumming. Great great performance. Stunning playing.
I’m a Harvey fan from way back, my favorite cut of his is Lee Ritnour captain fingers, explosive innovative!❤️
saw Harvey Mason live in 75 what a jive!!! a great drummer, I love it the way he grooves!!
Harvey was one of the first drummers that I patterned my playing after. :)
Absolutely thrilled you guys have finally got Harvey on. Proper Legend. I know anyone who knows him have there fave tunes but here's a few that still blow me away today. Donald Byrd : Change, the underrated hi-hat work on that track is killing. Wilbert Longmire : Black is the Colour, His groove on the whole track is just relentless and last but certainly not least George Benson : The World is a Ghetto, Daaaamn!! The most amount of freedom I've ever heard from any drummer but he keeps it so very tasteful, also the best groove outro you'll ever hear. No, Thank U Mr. Mason.
What an impressive gentleman and legend. Holy smokes this fella is smooth as silk on the kit. What a pleasure to watch. So much wisdom to glean from this man. Talk about a great role model!!
This is just a joy to listen to
The sound of his Drums including the cymbals is amazing!
proud to be part of this with my tune " The Bird "
omg, when legends play is another level
Great drummer ,I used to and still jam to chameleon ,those offbeats and the section on original chameleon where he does a fast samba beat with those ride patterns ,so grooving and beautiful.. A pure Craftsman and groover at work ..a great inspiration ,thanks Harvey.
Greetings from England
Fantastic! His main snare drum is super sensitive, and his Tom's are very musical. Great lesson and interview! Loved it.
Got to know him trough Johnny Hammond and other Mizell bros productions, only later I found out that he plays on a massive volume of albums I love. The man is a session/studio whale, one of the greatest ever, it's so nice to be able to watch this video.
Brilliant. I saw play in Tokyo a couple of years ago. Pure joy for him and the audience.
Herbie Hancock... the song is called ‘4 AM.’ Drummer is Mr. Mason, bassist is Jaco. Absolute definitive tune..
Harvey has a beautiful touch/feel in his playing. His snare drum sounds so sweet!-just right!
I oughta keep coming back to check out The Legend Himself at least once a week here. His touch and musicality are so inspiring.
Harvey has a laid back playing style. Finesse all day.
Mr. Mason if you see this, which im sure you wont, so ill speak first person. I studied harvey's styel starting with what he did on "so this is love", george Bensen. The drums during middle part solo, and at the tail end of the song. This playing styel helped emensily in developing my own styel. In fact if you listen to me play you'll find some familiarityes. Intermeshed with in my own personal styel. Because of that George album i spent hours, weeks months playing back at slow spead and compleatly learned the drum parts Mr. Mason played for the entire song this is now a pernament part of my drum playing styel
Harvey still got the groove !
Harvey's a true legend in the business....an amazing career and he's still experimenting with different sounds. Note the very sensitive and delicate snare sound on this video. Always enjoy listening to Harvey..the pro's pro. Thanks for the video.
Always loved Harvey Mason's playing. The taste, feel, the emotion... Some play the drums, some use the drums to play music.
What a great sound! I love his touch and his personality, so humble! Again, amazing job Drumeo!
Love his touch!! Great feel...
Harvey is a gentle force behind the drums. Simply a touch god. Seen and met him several times with Lee Ritenour. He showed me to reverse the hi hats cymbals. Heavy top which is more meaty but less effort to perform. Soulful is not descriptive enough for Mr. Mason.
Harvey Mason and all around musical drummer/percussionist and composer he's an inspiration to me as a drummer and percussionist! Glad Drumeo got him for drum session to encourage!
harvey mason used to be called swiss clockwork because his timing was perfect.
he was the one drummer that everyone wanted on their record.
his sound and above all precision on the drums was unmatched.
his snare on dave grusin's rag bag from the mountain dance album is what a drummer's dreams are made of.
only carlos vega could match that with grp's live in session.
george benson's valdez in the country is another gem.
or harvey's work with the brecker brothers and the headhunters.
harvey mason deserves so much more respect than he's gotten so far.

Pure class a master of his craft making everything look so easy
Very amazing player. It's inspiring to see someone having so much articulation/precision in his playing.
oh wow phenomenal sound and talent love it
I can't believe that we have Mr. Harvey Mason on Drum , too ! Great works !!
Unbelievable touch, musicality and attitude
Thank you Drumeo that was absolutely Fantastic!
Very very smooth. Thanks for posting this. Awesome cymbals!!!
A truly generous human being.
His hands are like feathers...
Perfect metaphor!
Harvey Mason is my grandpa! I love it Pops!💜👍
Thaink you drumeo and thank you Mr. Harvey Mason
Yes!!!! It’s back!!! Thank you Drumeo!
This was a particularly good episode. Mr. Mason's playing speaks for itself. To Drumeo host, let me say nice listening and thank you for letting Harvey speak. Great respect shown and a nice chill episode. Nice work.

Great Dynamics, HARVEY IS LEGEND!
I love the sound of this kit.
This is the best !!! How much i was waiting for this !!! Love you guys , at drumeo .. keep up the great work .
Love that kit..amazing kit.. special Harvey mason..
I love his hi-hats, great sound, they must be 13" flats, I can't tell. He's a genius!
Been an inspiration as a drummer since the 70s'. Saw you with Chameleon at Blue Note Hawaii was great...Keep on keeping on Harvey!
sofisticated playing...so smooth.amazing
So great. Nothing else to say. Thanks for this moment !
That last track was killer!!
I've never wanted more than one snare on my kit. Thanks to Sr. Mason, I now want three. Amazing grooves on this fellow.
"Just totally on another planet with his playing and a class act at that also.... I thoroughly enjoyed both the groove and his magic touch on the cymbals. Canopus drum sound awesome and I've never played them before but I've heard about them on occasion and Harvey's been playing them for quite a few years.
Harvey one of my all time favorites!!
Yea, this cat be smooth and grooving! I've digging Harvey's drumming since the early 1970s. The guy plays everything. "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts is a favorite track that Harvey was on the session.
I'm almost 100% certain that Jim Gordon played on that track. Not Harvey.
Harvey isn't credited as playing on that album
This lesson deserves more views, criminally underrated video.
Very Cool Guys Love it!
It's so cool Harvey's drummin' performances as usual !! Awesome play👍 Thanks for showing the smooth play, Harvey✋
I Love those mallet sticks that he Uses. I accidentally ordered them trying to find a quieter stuck to practice with. They give a great tone. Great drummer and great lesson. One of my favorite :)
Great interview Drumeo with one of the best
That is the most sensitive snare I've ever heard! It picks up the lightest ghost notes so easily. The snare wire feedback that happens when he hits the toms is crazy though. Sounds like he has 7 snares haha.
you missed the part that he has control over the whole freaking drum set. look how he buzz the snare, as smooth as a feather touching the water :D
My Ludwig 402 Supraphonic is stupid proof like that :)
JE...It’s called “Touch”..which a lot of the younger players have no fucking clue of!!!!!!!
truthbtold There is no question this man has “touch”, but that snare is totally fucked up sounding. It sounds as if the sound man just cranked the highs on the snare mic. Horrible sounding to me
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 400 is better!
What a legend. Thank you.
One of the greats!!!
Beautiful!
Harvey Mason- Drummer extraordinaire!
Yes I love Headhunters that album is one of my favs of all time and Chameleon is the best intro track ohhhhhhhhhhh tht groove warms my soul
great great great musician, love his drumming on the cut Sly from the headhunters album, IMHO he is the best!
What a class act
the control and musicality
HARVEY MASON 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I came here because of an ad, and I stood for the lesson. Thanks Drumeo!
