  • Hello Darlings, it's officially December so time to get festive!!!! I made my "Nan's special yummy fruitcake" which I have been very excited to bake for over a year now! I hope you enjoy the video and are starting to get into the Christmas spirit! I'll see you next week as I decorate the house for Christmas!
    Lots of love,
    Sage Xx
    "Nan's Special Yummy Fruit Cake"
    1kg mixed fruit
3 cups any sugar free juice
1/2 cup of any chopped nuts
Pour juice over fruit and nuts, and leave overnight.
    Next Morning
    3 cups self raising flour
Mix well the flour into the fruit.
Prepare a cake tin, line well with baking paper.
Cook in 150C/302F degree oven on bottom shelf for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
Leave in tin to cool, leave one day before cutting.

Sage, as an older woman who's lost her mother and grandmothers get all of those recipes you can!! Even things like noodles or main dishes too. If there are family recipes from holidays get them now. No one knows how many seasons we have left. Love you to bits! Best wishes for your nursing career. Mine was 48 years including 3 as a student. So blessed for my experiences and people I met!❤

Back in the days before world war 2 my family owned a bakery. Sugar & flour rationing during the war put them out of business. However, Grandma gave me her fruitcake recipe and I made it the first year I was married to give to people as Christmas gifts. OMG - it was a complicated recipe and it made a lot - bakery size recipe. The cakes were delicious but by the time we purchased all the ingredients we had spent way over budget. They turned out delicious but even after giving them to everyone as Christmas gifts I still had several in my mom's freezer. Every time I needed dessert for almost a whole year it was fruitcake. My Mom kept saying they were too good to throw away - so we just kept defrosting them and eating them for months. When you said you were going to make fruitcake I had a little seizure - yours are much more reasonable than mine were.

hahhaahha your comment reminded me of a time my father was gifted a very large fresh tuna. We had to freeze it and ate different tuna dishes at least 4 times a week for a year. By the end none of us were able to look at fresh tuna again for several years.

Been there, done that. 😅 We (two girls) volunteered to make noodle salad for the celebration party when we finished our training for our job, I knew the recipe very well, but we didn't really calculated how much we should make for 20 persons (when other food is served too). We ended up with a large batch, that not even 20 people could tackle, we tried to give every guest an extra portion but we had to throw some away, because of the mayonnaise and the weather...

(prepare yourself for a long comment)
i just wanna say that you give me so much inspiration to live in the style of the 1940s-50s. You have made me admire the charm and simplicity of it and your personality encapsulates it perfectly well. Every time i watch your videos, i always feel a little happier.
i am not one to really like fruitcake but seeing yours makes me want to give it another chance and perhaps try your nan’s special recipe someday :) i’m absolutely loving your outfits for this vid btw! (especially the second one, it reminds me of a peppermint and the flowers in your hair are a lovely touch 😭😭❤️)

This is, by a wide margin, the longest we've ever seen Sage wait to eat one of the desserts she's made 😁
My auntie makes Christmas cakes for us every year, she soaks the fruit in brandy for weeks in advance and includes almonds and glace cherries. Not sure about the rest of the recipe, it's probably part of her last will and testament 🤣
This was so simple and looked amazing, what a great way to start the season off right, and deliciously

Dear Sage, your garden is sooooo beautiful. It brings back memories of childhood. My Granny used to raise hens, too. Maude and Mabel look very happy and healthy. About the fruitcake I remember my Granny tried to make one once, but scrambled the ingredients and measures, so she obtained some sort of brick made of dried fruits and flour, hard as a stone and burned at the bottom. For me it was delicious because she used honey. Still remember that smell all over the house (don't know why but the spicy and toasted smell lasted until February).

My whole family turned up their nose when I said I was making a fruitcake for Christmas dessert. In fact two others offered to make dessert. I made your Nan’s recipe and brought it to the gathering. Guess what! It was completely consumed and I got texts from another state to ask if there’s any left! (Word travels fast). So here it is 4 days later and I have fruit soaking in juice to make more! So much better than the kind of fruitcake at the shops!

That sounds so good compared to what we have here in America. I've had fruit cake a few times and I hated it because they mainly make it here with candied fruit and spices. I just don't like candied fruit. I'm sure some families make it different, but even store bought fruit cake is the same here. I look forward to trying this and thank you so much for sharing your Nan's fruitcake :)

I followed the recipe almost to the t.
    Except I did the following
Soaking the fruit in the three cups of regular apples juice. I had a combo of fruits like Thomas and raisins, current, golden raisins, dried cherries, and dried cranberries. One cup of pecans. I soaked it overnight in a bowl on the counter covered. I soaked it for about 8 hours.
Next morning I added the three cups of self-rising flour. I gave it stir and I put the whole thing in a big tin Pan.
Next time I know to bake it below 302 f. Because my fruit cake took only an hour and 15 minutes to bake. It still turned out okay.
I think you have to add cranberries to this because it just really combined really well with the apple juice. It also made The fruitcake a little sweeter.

Thanks for the video! Quick thing, when measuring flour, its best to use a measuring cup, don't shake it or pack it down, and use a knife carefully slide the excess off. Flour is very compatible, so it's easy to use too much if you don't use this method.

Up until about 5 years ago, my parents always bought big bags of mixed nuts (shells still on) every November and December. The nuts sat in a wooden bowl on the kitchen table, and my parents would sit there after dinner, crack nuts, talk, and have coffee. That was one of their traditions for 60+ years. These days, some of the local grocery stores, Walmart, and Target carry those bags of nuts with shells still on.

Hi Sage love this video, because I use this recipe myself, and now I don't feel so guilty that it's so easy. My daughter asked me to make it for my son in law for Christmas, as he's intolerant to so many foods, but loves my fruitcake! Thankyou for making it okay to cook an easy recipe.Yay! ☺️💕🎄By the way, we eat it early and I also add a dash of rum sometimes. ☺️
