How to become a better person

  • It sounds normal to say one's out to become a fitter person; but it sounds weird to say one would like to be a nicer or better person. It shouldn't - so here is a guide to 10 virtues of a nice person. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): goo.gl/jpBFrj
    To download a list of modern virtues, see also: goo.gl/PEDEdy
    FURTHER READING
    “Why does being ‘a good person’ have such a bad name? In the modern world, the idea of trying to be good or kind conjures up all sorts of negative associations: of piety, solemnity, bloodlessness and sexual renunciation. It’s telling that ‘wicked’ has even become a term of praise.
    And yet the project of being good is as vital, or even more important, for the individual and society as is the project of being healthy. Yet while we have no problem with going to the gym to get fitter, it sounds deeply weird, even creepy, to suggest that one might ‘work’ at being better or nicer...”

    This video, to me, has actually helped. I don't know for what reason, but I always seem to be irritant, rude to people, and say really hurtful things. I don't know, why I do it. It may be my own insecurites that I try to hide with an "aggressive" front, to simply put others down to make myself feel better, or simply because I've not been very socialy aware to know that the things in my mind and the things that I say should be thought over.
    From today; after watching this, I will be a happier person to be around, I will not put others downbut instead, I will encourage them and bring them up, and think a thousand times before I say something to someone. Even if I have to I will find a nicer way to show my displeasure.
    I don't know why I wrote this, but I don't have many friends, and my parents and I are not on good terms for the exact reason that I'm watching this video for. I guess, I just wanted to "tell" someone. Good luck to you all. I hope you have some form of success from this, wherever you are.

    ever since i started meditating, my life has been turning around for the good. i feel a scenes of joy, peace and happiness. The things I need the most in my life. I was so socially awkward, and because of that I had no friends. Mediation has taught me how to face those fears. with out those fears i started to be more socially active. Strangers would become friends, and with friends came happiness. I no longer had the urge to end my life. The skills i need for a happy life. I had moved to a ghetto school and I had no idea how to make friends with out turning your life in their direction. The direction of sadness and sorrow (life of violence/drugs/jail). With college getting more impossible to enter with out money nor good grades. I no longer saw my self going that direction. But now my direction is more clear than ever. and nothing not even this storm of depression can get in the away from my dreams. Because they`re more than just dreams. they are a potential reality that can one day me my reality.

    I wish I could like this more than once. It is by far my favorite video on UA-cam as well as being imho the most actionable plan towards living a genuinely happy life.
    I have been consciously applying these principles daily for the past few months and the result is amazing. I find myself more connected, more engaged and genuine with all those around me. The net result being I am happier and even when things aren't perfect I still find the strength to be happy. The craziest part is people around me have noticed and started asking "what's my secret".

I've committed some sins and I've been a nuisance to everyone because of my bad habits. I was about to kick the bucket but then I found the light which allowed me to improve myself. Even now I've not changed a lot from back then but I'm still trying to improve myself.

    This is helpful.. sometimes lessons come late. Sacrifice and politeness, two things that I can see I’ve failed to personally cultivate. I’ve been selfish and rude for far too long. I refuse to think I’m incapable of change, but where to go from here- what changes I can make myself, in isolation, it’s scary to think of what I can do differently now. I wish I had done so many things different. I am grateful for the upload.

    • @sketchingtophat9661
      @sketchingtophat9661 4 роки тому

      Everyone wishes they could do something differently, but just forget about all that stuff. Whatever happened yesterday will only hinder today because you’re afraid of making the same mistake, thus dwelling on how you could have done it ‘better’. But there is no better when it comes to the past, because you’re capable of change and there’s always tomorrow.

    I would suggest replacing empathy with compassion and politeness with kindness. The reason is that both empathy and politeness are components of the boarder and more fundamental values (virtues) of compassion and kindness. If one is compassionate, one will be empathetic. If one is kind, one will want to be polite. However, one can have both empathy and politeness without having compassion and kindness. In fact, research shows that while empathy is an extremely important trait to have and develop, it (emotional intelligence) can also have a dark side, allowing one to better manipulate others. See the Atlantic Monthly article "The Dark Side of Emotional Intelligence" and the Sam Harris podcast with Professor Paul Bloom (where they discuss the downsides of empathy but maintain compassion is always useful): soundcloud.com/samharrisorg/the-virtues-of-cold-blood-a-conversation-with-paul-bloom .

    If you do something for someone else, you do it to be a good person? Well, why do we want to be good people? It releases certain pheremones in our brain that casue emotional pleasure to know we ourselves are good people, so in the end are we really doing things for other people? Or do we do it for ourselves.
    Even if you love someone deeply, a wife, husband, child, parent, why do you love them? You feel good when you talk to them, or when they're happy. YOU feel happy when THEY feel happy, so it traces back to your own happiness.
    No matter how good of a person anyone tries to be, nobody actually REALLY cares about how other people feel.

      I have been depressed, super joyful, empty, incredibly confused and i have honestly thought the same exact thing as you and wondered it for so long. When my mom died, i felt so selfish, i was so focused on myself that all i could think was how everything affected me, how she left me when i was so young, how my friends would take care of me, how i would end up getting more attention from people. I thought what the hell am i doing being so selfish? I just couldn't get passed it and eventually i just had to accept that i was self centered and you know what happened? i got passed it. I found that it was really actually self-interest, it was a lot of it. But out from it can come love, just like out from our flaws comes perfection, and just like out from trying to become better people, we give love to others. It's okay to think of ourselves, that makes us human and that's how we actually care about others. A strange paradox. I think everything in life is like that. There is a balance and a deep connection like this and its difficult to understand and discover. We may question our motives and our self-interests, but it is exactly that which is making is so much more human. When you find a way to let go of that feeling, you will end up focused on the happiness that person is feeling in front of you and on what you did for them, NOT that you care about them because you dont need to think about caring to actually care, and i believe that at that point you will find acceptance with that happiness. Keep questioning things and progressing. We all have a lot to learn and are just trying to find ourselves. Have a wonderful life :)

      so long as you're actually doing actually benefits someone else, you're aloud to feel good about doing something nice for someone. Its a win win for everyone you're just overthinking it and making yourself feel bad about the fact that people get happy when they do nice things for other people.
      The only danger is convincing yourself you're a good person and not examining youre actions.

      +Alex o his argument is that true altruism doesn't exist, because every good deeds we do, we do it for ourself. You do good thing, so people like you, or so you can feel good about yourself, or so it creates a better world for people to live in, in which you're part of that group. Everything is about you.

    There is only one virtue, that stands above all. It was in the video as well, but mis-informingly stated. Self-awarness or awarness of (no)self.
    In other words, meditation. -Step one
    Realization of (no)self through observing the mind. -Step two
    Freedom from self. -Step three

    • @peterklemenc6194
      @peterklemenc6194 9 років тому

      alienzen Self-awarness that gives you the realization that mind is merely a tool or the 6th sense.... or in other words, awarnes that there is no "self", ...that this "self" is a construct of the 6th sense, the mind (ego)...which is an illusion. Hence, (no)self.
      Kind of hard to put it eloquently, not my mothers tongue.

    • @peterklemenc6194
      @peterklemenc6194 9 років тому

      alienzen
      By observing the ego (a sense, 6th, the mind), through consciousness (meditation)
      Nirvana is merely staying in the ultimate trance of observation. In Lao Tzu's words, "When I let go of who I am, I become who I might be"..... as other countless ones, scattered across history, saying the same thing, in a new way

      ***** If you ever saw Stargate: Universe this following explanation would make sense, else..hmm.
      My belief is that the body is like this spaceship Destiny (SG:Universe) and meditation is like self-repair and upgrade of systems mode. When you meditate and breathe deeply into the belly and the root, you sort of fill yourself with energy, up to a point that you literally fill bigger or fuller. Now, I believe you are very wise and can look up on google "the benefits of meditation"... besides brocolli, it's literally the best thing you can do in your life for your well being. Fck religion. Wish you the best.

    Can someone please elaborate on the "self awareness" one for me?

    • @owlnemo
      @owlnemo 7 років тому +15

      Hey!
      Basically, self-awareness is to examine your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours. The goal is to understand how you work and why.
      For instance, maybe you got mad at someone. Then you reflect on it: what did this person do that got me mad? Why did I react? Maybe what the person did was against an important value of mine. Let's say they insulted my friend: maybe I'm reacting because it's my friend and it goes against my loyalty and/or affection for this person. Maybe I'm reacting because I think everyone deserves not to be insulted, because I deeply believe in respect. Maybe it would imply that I'm weak because I'm friends with an "unworthy person" and it hurts the image I have of myself. Maybe several of these factors are combined.
      Then, when you've isolated the factors, you can still ask more: what does this value come from? My parents? School? Personal crucial experience? etc. (It doesn't have to be because of a value, it can be other factors)
      All this work is very helpful when something goes wrong, because it allows you to override the thought processes that have a negative impact on your life, like getting angry often, trusting too fast, never trusting, going for the wrong person, being chronically disatisfied etc.
      I hope my explanation is understandable. If not (or even if it is) feel free to ask for more :)

    • @WILD__THINGS
      @WILD__THINGS 7 років тому

      owlnemo Well thanks for the time to reply. I understand the concept of self awareness. I was just asking for an explanation of one specific point he made where he said "what belongs to the world."

    • @owlnemo
      @owlnemo 7 років тому +27

      Argh. Sorry for giving you subtitles you did not need (^_^)'>
      "What belongs to the world" stands (I think) for the things you have no control over.
      Wisdom is to care about changing things that are within our reach and not worry about what we have no control over.
      I think the video is refering to this, basically saying: be self-aware enough that you know your strengths and can work on your weaknesses, but also let go of what is beyond your reach and ultimately, well, not your own problem.

    "We put a man on the moon but other things are still going wrong... we should be more forgiving" at 1:10. I think they mix up too much of technological achievement vs. culture and human behaviour.
    Only a tiny fraction of the US was actually involved and able to put some people on the moon. Only a small fraction builds infrastructure, cars , ... . You don't have to change people in order to progress in technology.
    But it's completely different with empaphy, forgiveness and so on. This is a behavior on the personal level. These are very difficult skills to obtain which require a huge amount of time and lots of practise.
    But you don't need to change very much in order to use technology, so every *** can use a smarthphone, while contributing absolutely nothing to its creation.
