You are very committed. I've thought a few times I'd like to go back to blonde after henna-ing my hair for over a year, but after seeing this maybe not.
splat sucks using that was the first mistake the second mistake was using a hair dye as toner
Yeah learned the hard way that SPLAT sucks
I have waist length, fine hair. Ive been using henna for years. When I went back to blonde, I just lightened sections instead of the entire head. Yes, I got that orange tone, but against the darker part, it just looked sunstreaked. The good news is when you bleach over henna, your hair is stronger than if you just bleached over virgin hair. It's still in good condition. You can just add blond streaks to new growth to blend in the roots as you wait for the henna to grow out. Another option as you grow out the henna in favor of blond is to use cassia. Cassia thickens hair just as good as henna, but it adds a slight yellow tone instead of red.
What a great idea!!! Thanks
Thank you so much for making this sacrifice in order for us to benefit from the knowledge we gain from your results. Peace 🌹
+MiamiPush2theLimit Glad to help!
Thank you, that's very informative. I'm a natural redhead with dulled red due to my age (61). I've been using henna for a few years to cover some gray and to restore the red to the shade I had in my 20s. I'm happy to know that Henna is permanent! When I dye it, most of it is still red, and I only need to dye the roots.
Thank you for doing this, you definitely love us.
+Steshel Bland Thanks for watching, it was all for you all!
You could of used OOPS hair color remover. I found a blog on removing henna with that stuff and it worked amazing with no damage just a little dryness. But it pulled the henna out after one appliaction left it in for an hr and rinsed for 30 mins (the smell is rank for a week or 2 after though). Some ppl did it twice or even 3 times within a few weeks.
Cheryl Tarleton really? I wish I would have known this before I damaged my hair haha
I just did a patch test using Color Oops to remove my orange red henna color. Put it on as directed for 20 minutes and washed it out. Dryed it and no change in color. Repeated this process 1 more time and it still did not come out. Will just have to wait for several months for my roots to grow long enough to cut it off.
AZSinbad I left mine in for about an hour. I used the UK brand called b4
I ended up using Effasol mixed with water. Checked it every 5 min for 1 hour then washed it out.Took out quite a bit but still a little bright.Waited 2 weeks then did it again. really like it now as it is a golden blonde with highlights. I checked with a henna color company and they told me the only thing that will remove henna is a bleach wash which I believe is similar to Effasol. You can also mix it with developer instead off water.
Yeah, Henna is permanent. Bleach was the only way I got it out and honestly, I never got it out lol. If you really want it to look good definitely go to a professional hairdresser.
Alejandro I have to agree with you there, it damaged my hair so badly I had to cut it. However I don't plan on bleaching ever again, it was a one time experiment.
I'm amazed you did this. I've got to say thanks, there is no way my hair could have handled that!
Is it bad that the resulting color is convincing me to bleach my hair? :P
Becca Shepherd To each their own. Thanks for watching my video :)
Woe!! Thanks for giving it a try so the rest can learn from your experience!
Your very welcome :)
Wow, thanks for going to all this trouble just to answer the question. Super helpful info, really appreciated.
Thanks! Not one of my finest moments but now we know! lol
Two times bleach and a permanent dye in a row, huh, not surprised you had to cut it, I'm surprised you have any hair left! ;) But I do get doing it for experiment, I have done similar things myself, just not in a row (especially not on the same day!). A tip for anyone planning to bleach: coconut oil helps prevent some of the damage, so always bleach over coconut oiled hair. (Works with other peroxide-based dyes as well.)
+florenna Yeah I deffinitly fried my hair. But it was for the all of you! XOXO
Thanks for this video. Ive had henna in my hair for years and I'm ready to go from dark brown to ash blonde, but i still have henna to me chin. Thankfully its not very noticeable but a stand test had the proof! I might try to did some highlights and dye it a medium brown and use a blue/purple shampoo. I have to say though... box dye isn't the same as a toner.
+Andrea Aldrich You are right I was told to use the box dye as a toner but as you can see from the video, it really didn't do much lol. Live and learn . Thank you for watching! Let me know how yours turns out!
Brave lady! Thanks for the courage and the video to discourage others
Oh I fried my hair! And thanks! lol
What if the last time i put henna in my hair was almost a year ago? It's so faded that now the parts with henna only look auburnish in direct sunlight. Normally, it's to the point that it just looks brown. I really want to bleach parts of my hair but I'm now worried about getting a pumpkin head.
this is the case for me as well. did you end up trying it?
I'm sure i'm late with the suggestion, but if anybody reads this it might help someone. If you need to get rid of henna from your hair, castor oil or mineral oil mixed with alcohol left on your hair for a long time will help removing a lot of it. It is a messy process but works. Depending on your hair's health you might just want to use a plain hot oil wrap. The oil is difficult to wash out, but on porous hair the henna is very stubborn so you have no other choice..... You cannot put bleach over henna expecting it to remove it or become blonde! If you used a Henna "product" (means it has a minimal amount of henna in it, the rest is crap) your hair could turn green or any weird colors at best, or you can completely burn your hair off. Any over the counter hair product that has Henna in the name is not pure henna ,it contains heavy metal which reacts to bleach and burn your hair off! Only 100% pure henna is safe, but they don't sell that in beauty shops. You can find it on Ebay or some Asian stores.
Where were you when I did this? lol. It turned out ok actually. Now my hair is back to normal and healthy again
Sheena The Henna Queen At least you're lucky that your hair didn't come out a disaster! Most people learn the hard way lol
I did a lot of research, plus my aunt is a beautician so she was guiding me what to do and not do.
Thanks and yes I only use 100% henna. I have not tried oil but may have to do a video on that! See if it actually works. Thanks for the suggestions!
Sheena The Henna Queen You're welcome! If you're trying to remove henna, oil with heat, or even plain hair conditioner with heat will remove a lot. Of course the best is the oil/alcohol/heat combo but it's a messy one! Good luck! :-)
I heard that washing hair with mineral oil helps but idk if it removes it completely. thank you for the video, I'm actually waiting to grow out the henna then I'm gonna cut it off and dye my virgin hair
Your hair looks gorgeous bleached twice @ 2:36!!! 😍
Mim Star you are 2 kind
Thank you so much for doing this!!
Your welcome
Thought I should mention, whether you bleach your hair the same day or 2 weeks later it will cause the same amount of damage.
Did you bleach your hair with freshly henna-ed hair? I applied henna to my hair over a year ago and am looking to bleach it. I know a lot of it has grown out, but definitely not all of it!!
+Hallory Sindelar No my hair had been about 5 months with Henna on it, so it was not fresh. Use a different type of bleach the Splat was not strong enough.
Oooook, So bleach is out of the picture xD I'm dying my hair since 15 years - first henna red, now brown with indigo and henna. Only thing that bugs me: it keeps getting darker an darker. Startet to apply only on the roots way to late. :-/
+HelenaMawie Yes it does, so my solution to that was to use a lighter henna when it was time for a touch up. It does not lighten your hair, but it also does not darken it either.
The henna dye is layered on top of the other colors. Because henna does not release from hair it just absorbs more color. Mixing with indigo explains the dark shade. If you had 3 treatments of henna, then all layers are dyed on top. I shaved my hair completely off to start with healthier natural hair.
After the 1st bleach, my reaction was Wow! After the 2nd... OH, MY WORD!!! 😲
Thank you so much for doing your hair and saving me the heartache. I see now that I really LOVE my henna and will either let it grow out when I am tired of it, or continue to die it for eternity. 🤣
Glad I could help! I won't ever be doing that again! LOL. Don't forget to subscribe XOXO
Can you bleach your hair if you've only used henna once? My hair is naturally black so i don't see much difference with henna and i want to try bleaching instead. is it safe?
I really messed up my hair with henna/indigo treatment. My hair would not let go of the black ends. My roots turned orange. Black and orange hair got shaved to the roots .... (8"). Luckily I'm a guy and shaving was my only option. Its the worst look for a 55 yr old man. Back to growing...
Henna isn't going to come out all the way with bleach. Also, the reason for the banding is because you have more layers of henna at the mid shaft.
Bleaching over henna should only be to bring dimension to it. I bleached over my henna for nice coppery highlights which worked great.
Thanks Jennifer for watching. This video was from 2014. I've learned a lot since then and will not bleach again (that is for sure). Hope you continue to watch my videos :)
thanks for sharing your experience. .good to know
How often or long have you dyed your hair with henna before?
I only needed it for the roots because the color really doesn't fade so every 3 to 6 months. I dyed my hair with Henna for a total of 4 years but ended up stopping because of how dark it was getting.
Instead of a white chocolate if you had used a really ash toner (like a Wella T14) you probably would have wound up more blonde. Also, coconut oil is your best friend when bleaching.
Where were you when I did this! I may have to try the ash blonde idea if I try to lighten it again! Thanks
Why couldn't you have gone straight to henna after bleaching rather than using toner 1st?
You're very welcome!
I love that orange hair. :)
+Mink Goyathlay Thanks.. I was not a fan lol
I'm kinda wanting to try this with a 3% cream bleach just to actually get that kind of oreangy color! I would be soaking my hair in coconut oil over night first to minimize that damage though.
Thanks for experimenting on your hair for us!! I am a henna head and I love it :) Being a natural blonde I sometimes wish to have more strawberry tones versus the bright red color that I get with henna. Do you think henna can be lightened with a box blonde color? The lengths of my hair aren't in the best condition so bleach would not be a good option for me. Also, I have some indigo in my hair from the Lush henna bars and I hear that indigo is what makes your hair turn green with bleach. I don't wish to be blonde, I'm just looking for a lighter red color :) Thanks again for the great videos!
***** what's cassia?
Cassia is a different plant that is often called "neutral henna" since it either has no color or a light yellow color. When mixed with henna it should lighten the resulting red. When I've used it in the past it makes my naturally blonde hair turn a more orange/tangerine color. I did end up coloring over my henna with an ash blonde box dye. I was surprised at how much red it took out! I was really blonde (henna is usually very difficult to remove). However, I didn't end up liking the super blonde results and have since gone back to henna red. You should check out katrinaosity she has some really helpful henna/cassia videos. :)
Thanks hun so helpful. Im naturally a very light ginger I henned and was a rich copper I decided to go brown henna but it's way to dark. Was wondering how I lift it.
I'm assuming the brown henna has indigo in it which can be difficult. I've gone too dark before as well with both the brown henna from Lush and a darker henna from Light Mountain. They were compound hennas and claimed on the instructions that they would fade. So, every time I used my conditioner (Abba - recovery treatment) I could see the indigo bleed out until I was back to a really light ginger color (usually took 2-3 weeks). I will say that when I boxed dyed my hair blonde there was a very small section of hair that looked a bit greenish. However, it was super small and I wear my hair curly so it wasn't noticeable. When I colored, my hair was a light red color, but I have a feeling if I had tried coloring while my hair had noticeable indigo my hold head would have been green. I hope you are able to get back to the color you want without too much hassle :) You should also check out Jesse Sage. She bleached her hair because she wanted to be blonde and has a lot of good information about removing henna and indigo.
***** Thank you for your response, to questions. Love my fellow henna ladies ;)
My natural hair is almost black, if I bleaching my hennaed hair, my hair turn orange or more lighter brown than my natural hair?
Can you dye black dye over henna?
Hey thanks for your video, it was useful !
I had Henne in my hair 10 months ago. How long do you think I would have to wait to be able to bleach without so much risk ....
+Maudoonette As long as it has grown out I'd say at least 3 months is good. But really anytime you bleach there will be damage.
Brad Mondo where you at?
the toner helped alot. thanks now i know.. :D im not using henna ever again D:
Henna isn't bad for the hair but it is permanent on less you grow your hair out. But it is a way more healthier alternative to chemical hair dyes
Personally, I preffer how your hair looked before the bleaching. I think it was a very beautiful colour and it suited you. The actual colour looks so weird and funny...
I am using henna for 5 years and my hair looks very healthy. I used to put Indigofera Argentea, but since one year I am using red and brown henna and still cannot get rid of the dark tone from it... I would like to have the colour that you used to have right before the bleaching. Which tone did you use?
Oh I agree, I did think it was getting to dark but now that I bleached it, I did like the color. I only bleached it because I got so many questions about it. It was an experiment. Never again! lol
I used Wine Red from Henna King for about 1 year.
Real henna only comes in one color which is orange on your hair. Anything else that has different tones are mixed with other stuff and they are dangerous to use if you also bleaching. You can lose all your hair down to the root, don't take a chance.
Actually there are many healthy plants and roots you can use with henna to vary the color and it won't cause your hair to fall out because it's plant based. However there are some (do your research) that do contain minerals and other chemicals mixed with henna and yes that can cause a very bad reaction. So when you decide to Henna please make sure the ingredients are all natural.
There are lots of plants you can mix with henna to get different shades. However, henna is always orange. If it isn't orange it's more than just henna. With all the dangers documented from pre-mixed henna I would never buy it. Buy pure henna and pure additives and mix your own. It isn't hard and then you can be sure here aren't any dangerous additives.
My mom used to buy boxed henna in different colors and it made me crazy.
Also the shade that you chose for the toner is way too light for the bleaching results that you got
Alejandro Hidalgo Where were you when I was doing this??? I could have used your expertise.. :)
Your hair was way to dark still for a toner. Also red and black are the hardest dyes to get out in general. So even if you used a chemical hair dye instead of henna, you would of gotten a similar result after bleaching. You need to do multiple bleaching sessions, olaplex is suggested when bleaching. Also I don't know why you didn't use a hair dummy or an extension to test this out. You could of just dyed it with henna and did the same process, you could have avoided the damage to yourself.
+Danielle Leon Thanks. I didn't have a dummy and I did the test for you all so I it's all good. I won't ever bleach it again that's for sure. :)
Please help me, yesterday i tried to bleach a section of my hair, i have been using henna the last years but it has been a while since i dont use anything and when i tried to bleach it it came with green patches, what can i do? (my hair is very long ) thank you!
Go to a salon. They are professionals and can help you way better than I can. Sorry about the green streaks. Henna is very tricky to get out.
Lucky the henna didn't react with the bleach...should do an incompatibility test first
My aunt is a beautician so she told me what to do. But believe me I'm never bleaching again!
Can i bleach if i have black henna ?
Hi Achi, thank you for contacting me. NO! The reason you can't bleach when using black henna is that black henna has a lot of green hints in it. This means that your hair will turn green. If you watched my videos you will see mine turned orange after bleaching because of the orange pigment is the natural henna. So if you are using black henna you are going to have a green base. Now if you want that green look then go for it, but it's very difficult to cover, since that green tint will shine through even chemical dyes. Remember that henna sticks to the natural pigment of your hair. So if you have darker hair, and are wanting to lighten it, the henna is going to continue to show through. My advice is let your hair grow out to as much as you can stand. Don't use any henna or chemical dyes on your hair for at least 2 to 3 months. Once your hair is grown out, then you can try a chemical dye. It's so hard to go lighter after using henna, so you may want to go to a beautician. This way you can go lighter gradually and get the color you want without damaging your hair. I hope this helped and I'm curious to see how this will turn out.
but get brown hair is not impossible, or?
You can do brown as well. There are browns already mixed. You can try Henna Hut or Henna King. Those are my top favorites. There are a lot of colors in the red, brown, black hues.
I guess I will no more try henna, I even dont know why I did my hair with henna, but yah, after some tequilas... I have now appointment at monday in salon, we will try to bleach my hairs with olaplex because of hair damages and thn brown coloring. Iam really excited and yah, just chemical colors more. :)
I have read that oil is the only way to get the henna out without damaging the hair...has anyone tried that?
Lesley Burton-Dallas i have not tries that! if you do let me know if it works
Sheena Diane..I will definitely keep you posted! :)
Lesley Burton-Dallas , I have tried it twice and it's working so far. It changed from black to auburnish . I'm going to continue using vegetable oil mixed with alcohol and will keep it for at least 8 hour or overnight. Don't do it for more than twice a week because it dries your hair too much. To remove the oil, which is very hard, don't wet your hair, just apply your shampoo directly to your hair, massage it very well and you'll be able to remove the oil very easy. Good luck!!
Yes, it's not the "only" non-damaging way to lighten henna, but a mix of coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil left on overnight, for many nights in a row, did lighten my henna/indigo hair very nicely and evenly, by a few shades. Vitamin C lightening also works, and honey lightening. See directions on the Long Hair Community's website. Bleach is awful, if you care about the health of your hair.
Thanks Maya!! I will try it, and let you know! :)
I henna with Jamila henna from hennaforhair.com. But my hair has gotten way too dark. (Me on the right: instagram.com/p/mq46vOvyWj)
I remember seeing a thread on the message boards on naturallycurly.com where a user bleached her hair a little to lighten it just a bit. It looked lovely afterwards. I wish I could find that old, old, old thread.
I really want my hair to be a lovely auburn color. I'm not sure what the best way to go about it is.
It looks like you have dark hair naturally, so you could have bleached it a bit and then applied henna
gidgetgoesplanning you could do a bleach bath to lighten it just a little. I have dark brown hair that I henna for my grays and I bleached some of it to see more of the reds and copper tones throughout. It worked great.
