As a hairstylist, this video was *chef's kiss* Many people cannot take time or money to go to a salon so this video is super helpful to ensure they do it right
There was a time when I didn't had the money and when I had I was always disappointed after going to the hairdresser...they always do what they want and think is right and they never listen to what I really want... So I just started doing it myself.. I've been cutting it for over 15 years now and dying and bleaching it for 4 years... And I am very good at hiding mistakes in buns 😂😂😂
Self-Care Sam hey I am in this situation money wise....I’m currently a level 2 but Iv used Wella Demi for years now....I figured this would be a good time to go through the ugly stages so.... do you think my hair will lift better since I used Demi? If so how long should I leave it and how long until I bleach it again
Self-Care Sam some people like me pay $250 for a pretty blond balayage yet it turns out like shit. And I went to a hairstylist that had years of supposed experience. Most hair stylists are ass. I could literally do your job
@@Sheridan_Winters Hey, I still get my dye from Walmart and Target (if the safety/efficacy of drugstore dye is what you're getting at). Revlon Colorsilk is what I've been using for years. Even though dye can still cause some level of damage to hair, I find that revlon has been forgiving on my hair, and using my own deep conditioners before + after and the after-color packet that comes with it helps TONS. It's affordable and it's been giving me my box-dye red for years. People always ask if it's natural or admit that they never would've thought it was colored when I mention that I dye my hair, lol. I've been coloring my hair with it for almost 10 years.

dye at home prepare: - don’t wash hair for several days - cover your space - brush hair! - section into 4 sections: down the middle then from apex (highest point on top of head) down to behind the ear - make sure hair is dry mixing your bleach or color: color: - 10 vol. does not lift color just applies a tint to hair (i should use for going darker) - 20 vol. lifts and changes color of hair - 30 vol. use with brighter colors (lifts hair color) - 40 vol. like 30 vol., makes colors even brighter bleach: - 10 vol. doesn’t work - 20 vol. 1-2 levels of lift, great to use to highlight hair - 30 vol. “standard” vol. to use with bleach w/ lightener - 40 vol. not recommend, if used on scalp extremely likely to burn *make sure to read directions and get the ratios correct where to start: color: - start with mid-section and ends, then do roots (if you do roots first/at the same time, the roots will be orange) bleach: - virgin hair: same as color, don’t start with roots (they will turn white and the rest of hair will be orange-like) wait 10-15 min then do roots - already colored hair: start with darkest spots first (still not roots) then work your way UP application method: color: - gloves - you can comb hair bleach: - use enough bleach - put a bag over your head (spray the inside with water) and tie tight (you don’t want the lightener to dry out) - do not comb or brush through bleach both: - start with bottom two quadrants, then work your way up how long to leave it on: color: - whatever the directions say - normally around 30-35 min bleach: - completely varies - virgin hair (want to go really light): 45min - 1 hour - rinse out back first, wait about 10 min then rinse out the front - if you leave it on for over an hour, it’s pointless, the bleach will be dried out - if worried about hair falling out, pull on a strand from the back and if it doesn’t break or stretch far, you are fine and you can leave it on cleansing: - use lukewarm water (cold water causes breakage) - be gentle: do not scrub scalp with nails, scalp scrubber, etc. use the tops of your fingers - wash at least twice, more if needed - condition very thoroughly (hair mask is amazing if you have it) evaluate the situation (bleach): - can your hair handle more bleach? if so, go for it! (if below isn’t occurring) - is it stringy? falling out? super white?etc. - if the answer is yes, don’t do another round of bleach *if you used color, you have finished! toner: - permanent color is NOT toner - don’t use box dye to tone hair (for example a blonde box dye) - mix with anything below a 10 vol. developer (or toning developer) - apply toner very fast - use the same level or darker that your hair is right now - go on color wheel and pick the color across from what it is right now (likely a purple or blue based toner) - purple shampoo is not a toner finish and style: - evaluate (do you want to be lighter? brighter? is this the color you want?) - be gentle with your hair - use proper products to take care of and maintain your hair (heat shield, hair oil, etc.)

Older video, yes, but thank you, thank you, thank you. I’ve been entertaining a change. In my 60s, a fair amount of gray. I’m not trying to look "younger," just not willing to wait until my 80s for my all my hair to go white/silver. Tried home products over 20 yrs ago with disastrous results. To the salon it was with me! Total respect for all hairdressers out there. That had to stop almost 10 years ago. I just can’t sit in a salon chair that long anymore, not even for a basic cut. Yup, been cutting my own hair. Gasp! Love all your videos.
Since we're all too lazy and forgetful, I've tried to cover most of what he says in my notes and I'm sharing it. *Prepping your Hair* 1. don't wash your hair before colouring it 2. cover your space 3. brush out your hair 4. Separate hair into four sections - Part hair in the middle (two sections) then further divide the two sections from the apex to the sideways, making it four sections in total 5. Make sure hair is dry 6. No need for oiling *Mixing bleach or colour* 1. choose correct developer: 10vol for no to little lightening effect, 20 vol changes a little colour on your hair, 30 and 40 vol for really dark natural hair colour 2. Read directions on the bleach as it's different for different bleach *Applying colour* 1. Don't start with roots 2. Start off with parts that are darkest, still don't do roots first *Application method* 1. Make sure gloves are on 2. You need lots of bleach 3. Start at the back taken from one section. 4. Spray water before covering hair because you don't want the bleach to dry out 5. Don't comb or brush through bleach *After application* How long to leave the colour on for? 1. Permanent colour: As the directions say 2. Bleach: 45 mins-1 hour. Not beyond an hour. 3. Wash out the back before the front, wait for ten minutes, then come to the front part. *Cleansing* 1. Use lukewarm water and not cold water 2. Do not scrub your scalp with nails and tips of your hand. Be very gentle 3. Most of the time it takes two washes to take all of the bleach out of your hair *Evaluate the situation* Decide on whether your hair can handle more bleach? *Toner* 1. Don't use permanent colour as toner. It has a lot of chemicals like ammonia that can cause further damage. 2. apply toner very fast. 3. Choose your toner colour correctly Use a darker toner 4. Level 1 toner- darkest; Level 10 toner- lightest. 5. Leave toner for the prescribed time; not too long and not for short time 6. *Purple shampoo is not a toner.* *Finish and style!* Use proper hair products to maintain and take care your new colour. May the force be with you! ❤❤❤

Preparation: Don’t wash your hair before colouring Cover your space Brush out your hair Separate hair in 4 sections Mixing bleach for colour: 10 lift: darkening 20 lift: for grays example 30,40: use bleach if your hair is dyed. might leave your hair differently colour. good for lightening. don’t use 40 vol Don’t start with roots Read instructions for ratios Use gloves Permanent colour: mix it up, put it on hair Bleach: Start at the bottom, work your way up Coat lightener to avoid spotting Avoid roots Set a timer Put a bag over your hair with a little water for bleach Don’t comb, brush, lather bleach Permanent colour: check your box Bleach: not more than an hour (virgin hair) you’re good when your hair is pale yellow Pull your hair to check if it’s breaking. If it’s not then you’re fine and you can leave the bleach more, Rinse your hair with lukewarm water Don’t scrub your scalp Use tip of your fingers It can take 2 washes to wash all the lightener Permanent colour is done. @Have You Seen My Lines? what color are you starting out with? If you have darker hair, I don't think that a box dye will lift it enough. It's hard to know exactly what is in a box dye. You may end up somewhere between blond and brown, which for a lot of people is a really unpleasant shade of orange.
Hairdresser’s Guide to Coloring Your Hair Prepare 1. Don’t wash your hair before coloring 2. Don’t wash it for several days before bleaching 3. Cover your space, floor, counters 4. Brush out your hair, completely detangle 5. Separate hair into four sections. Part your hair in the middle down to the nape of your neck, then make a section from the apex to behind the ears. 6. Make sure your hair is dry. 7. Don’t soak your hair in oil Mixing Your Bleach or Your Color There are two different developers Permanent color is NOT bleach. 1. 10 volume is best for any color and goes darker 2. 20 volume helps with grays 3. 30& 40 volume with permanent color is for high lift color. If you have color on your hair you can’t lift your hair color with more color. You can’t use blonde box dye to lift brown hair color. But if your hair is natural brown you can use the blonde dye to make your hair blonde. High lift colors lift many levels. Bleach 1. 10 volume sits on top, slightly inside 2. 20 volume is better for highlights 3. 30 volume is best for most hair types 4. 40 volume is a no go, it just lightens very fast. 5. READ THE DIRECTIONS, mix the lightener to the ratio that it says Where to Start * Permanent color * Start at the midsections and ends and then apply root color last. This is to avoid orange roots * Wait about 10-15 minutes and then go into roots with lightener * Start off with parts that are darkest * Application method * Make sure you have gloves * Comb through as color is applied * Bleach * You need a lot of lightener to get maximum results possible * Start from the back, at the bottom and work your way up. * Move the hair around in your palms and avoid the roots * Spray water inside a bag and put it over your head * Bleach doesn’t lather * Don’t comb through bleach How Long to Leave On? * Permanent Color: whatever the box says * Bleach: 45 mins-1 hr * For platinum: leave on until white looking * Wash out the back before the front, wait ten minutes, then wash out the front Cleansing 1. Use Luke warm water, not cold water. 2. Do not scrub your scalp 3. It takes 2 washes, if it feels gritty it isn’t clean Toner Permanent color isn’t a toner. Apply toner very fast Use the color wheel to pick which toner to use. Purple shampoo is not a toner Root and end glaze Aftercare Forcefield heat shield to protect against heat damage Viper Smoothing Oil to rehydrate hair
My friend wanted a balayage and went to a hairdresser, but left with very thick woven strands some parts weren´t bleached at all. We followed your video (mostly bc how to part the hair) and used a box dye (yes we know) for dark hair balayage. Her hair is virgin without any other products in them, only the bad "balayage". We did so so so freaking good and we wouldn`t have done without your video! In the middle of the process, we laughed because we should have recorded the whole thing for you. We definitely think you would be proud! After the bleaching we toned her hair down so now she has a really nice cool chocolate brown moment going on, in her natural really dark brown hair. I am so happy how it turned out, it`s just amazing. :D It was my first time doing any color, I usually only cut hair for family and friends since covid.😊
Bleach instructions, typed out with notes: Don't bleach your hair after it's freshly washed - oil on your scalp protects you Prep: clothes you don't mind throwing away Cover floor, etc. with old towels GLOVES 1. start with dry hair; Split hair into 4 sections 2. Mix: - Developer: 20 volume: 1-2 levels of lift. great, basic, does the job but still safe; better for scalp 30 volume: RECOMMENDED; higher lift, higher risk; ALSO lifts/lightens previous fake color - lightener/bleach: read directions, follow ratio instructions! Application: 3. Start with mid sections and ends. Wait 10-15 minutes, do scalp - start with darkest color spots Start at bottom/back of hair, working up 4. Put a (plastic?) bag over hair, tie it up - spray a little water inside (steamy so it's not too drying) 5. 45 minutes, check because it varies - Monitor process! Rinse: start in back LUKE WARM WATER (not cold, it shocks the hair, causing breakage) Gentle yet thorough, don't use nails/don't scrub your scalp Usually takes 2 washes to get all lightener/bleach out of hair (if it's gritty, wash it again) - (purple shampoooooo baby) Toner: lays on top of hair cuticle, healthy for your hair Apply right after (You can only use the same level of hair darkness OR go darker: for the use of Toners) Not used to lighten hair, just corrects the TONE in the level you created with the bleach/lightener NOTE: first time options - DO SCALP LAST (start by not doing scalp in first session, come back to if a few days later) do NOT comb/brush it through Use a lot - you don't want it to get spotty (if you're concerned for your hair health, leave it on for less time); coat it in there Note: Bleach doesn't lather like shampoo It always looks whiter before rinsing, will wash out and look more yellow than you think CONDITION/HAIR MASK to help scalp after Your welcome. 😘
Awesome , thanks!!! :) I'm in hairschool and struggling with colour formulas since we're doing the course via zoom now (due to covid, ughh!) , so, no dispensary room full of joico, redken colours, different volume developers, and all the other cool stuff we don't have access to.... no busy salon to learn cuts and colours on clients, no playing around with each other's hair, no swatch books, hairsprays, neat products to try out..that we paid big bux for!!! ....just our text books, mannequins and stands filled mostly with useless perm rods..and meetings via zoom.... I'm watching endless UA-cam vids trying to find answers to some questions I have ...... I got 95% on my final exam, but this colour formulating is driving me nuts!!!! Plz help?
Thank you , my mom's hair is dark brownish and she wanna dye her hair blond/brown if that makes any sense , which level/number she should use please and do you have any recommendations? Thank u
1) Prepare - Do not wash your hair (make sure it has oil) - Cover your space - Brush out your hair (no tangles) - Use rolling pin to crush the bleach powder nicely - Make sure your hair is dry 2) Mixing your Bleach / Color Two Categories: Permanent Color or Bleach Permanent Color: 4 Options 10 - No lightening, just tones your hair (doesn't cover grays) 20 - Lifts, changes color of gray hair, permanent 30 & 40 - High lift color, for vibrant reds, etc. (p.s. You cannot go lighter with color, you will only go darker) Bleach (aka Lightener): 4 Volumes 10 - No lifting abilities (hair cuticle doesn't open) 20 - One to two levels of lift, for highlights or if your hair is already light 30 - The standard! Highly recommended (Esp. if you have virgin hair) 40 - Not recommended, will burn your scalp, do not use Read the Directions! Every lightener has a different mixing ratio Mix correctly, make sure there's no clumsiness in your mixture 3) After Prep: Where to Apply? Permanent Color: - Virgin Hair: Start at midsections, ends, then your roots! Bleach: - Virgin Hair: Start at midsections then ends, make sure it starts lightening for around 10-15 mins before applying to your roots 4) Application: - Comb through your hair first and section them off - WEAR GLOVES. PLEASE. Permanent Color: Make sure the color is evenly applied Bleach: - Putting less lightener will not make your hair lift less! - how to apply/how much: 12:30 - Make sure your hair is coated - Start with the back, then to the front - Put a bag with a bit of water inside over your hair to keep moisture in - DO NOT COMB OR BRUSH THRU BLEACH 5) How long to leave it on? Permanent Color: Leave on the dye according to the instructions/directions Bleach: - Don't leave on bleach for more than an hr! Nothing will happen after 1 hr bc it dries out - For Virgin Hair: 45-60 mins - Wash out the back, then rinse out the front after your timer - Adjust time to your own personal preference! 6) Cleansing Bleach: Do NOT use cold water!!! - Use lukewarm water - Do not scrub your scalp (it's very fragile) - 2 Washes if you're using a lot of lightener (until the grit is gone) - Use conditioner/hair mask afterwards If your hair cannot handle more lightener, STOP! Your hair good? Continue but MAKE SURE YOUR HAIR IS DRY BEFORE REBLEACHING! 8) Toner (for Bleach) - Do Not Use Permanent Color for Toning! - Do not use box dye to tone your hair - T-18 is not a toner, it's a color! Optimal Toner: - Use a Level 10 Toner (Ash Neutral) with a Toning developer - Figure out your level: 18:15 - Opt for something that is the same level or darker for a Toner - Apply your Color Wheel! Orange hair? Use a blue Toner at the same level where your hair is at Purple Shampoo is not a toner! Do not use it, it will lead to spotting Leave it on for the recommended amount of time! Using a Toner that's a higher level than your actual hair will not lift your hair! Toner can only darken 9) Follow Up: - Don't make any risky decisions - Maintain your Color - If you need to go for a second session of bleach, do it another day! - Take care of your hair

NOTES FROM VIDEO: Prepare (to bleach): - do not wash before bleaching, this will cause damage, hair needs to be dry - do not wash hair for several days before bleaching - brush hair before hand to reduce spottiness etc - part hair into 4 sections (middle of head and across ears) Mixing (bleach or color) >> Volume Tips - 10 volume can be used on dark hair - 20 volume will get rid of grays. can also lift 1-2 levels of hair - 30 or 40 volume will lift color - if u have VIRGIN HAIR, you can use blond dye to lighten it or you can use 30 or 40 volume - bleach is for people with already died hair or virgin hair where people want to really lighten - 30 volume is Brad's go to for lightening hair - 40 volume is practically useless (in his professional opinion), it'll burn Application - start application at midsections to ends, then root color - the heat on your scalp will cause the color to develop faster so don't apply there til end - apply to roots after 10 to 15 minutes have passed - start with application to the back sections >> Applying Permanent Color - use a comb to make sure it spreads well - wear gloves - time depends on dye (check box or bottle) >> Applying Bleach - do not comb through - do not lather - for virgin hair if you want to really lighten it: leave in 45 - 60 mins Rinsing - wash off back first, wait ten minutes, then wash off front - use lukewarm water, NOT cold, cold can cause breakage - don't scrub, don't use nails to wash, BE gentle - do two washes to make sure you get out all the lightener Toner - not required after application of permanent dye, only use after bleaching - in choosing toner, have it match the level of your hair or darker - use color wheel to counteract colors @18:49 - toner doesnt lighten ur hair, it helps you achieve a nicer color
Amaranth Elk what if you are trying to tone your hair and first darkened your roots and have lighter highlights and ends? I can’t find the answer to this anywhere . . .I feel like my hairdresser just would use toner over my hair at the bowl, but I guess not???
If it didn't cost $250 plus a tip to have someone do my hair, I would definitely pay someone else to do it. I'm a working single mom who makes nothing.... So, I have to do it myself. Thank you to you and other stylists who help teach those of us who can't pay the pros.
Honestly, even when I COULD afford to go to the hairdresser's, I didn't because of them having ruined my hair before. Doing it at home is perfectly fine, as long as people do their research beforehand 🙈
I'm afraid to do bleqch on my own but after my last colour and bleach took 6 hours of sitting and 400 out of my pocket, I figured next time I'll just get the bleach professionally and do the colour at home. Idk if your salon was splitting costs for each thing but $85 for one time colour that faded faster than putting in my own Manic Panic after just did not feel worth it.
@@Spoke76 Yeah it was split up in a certain way I guess. It was $150 for the bleach of half head medium length hair, there must have been an extra charge for the type of way she was dying cause it was ballyage-like? Which was painful no fun when they had to brush that out. And then $85 for colour and an extra bit for the blowdry. I cut my hair a seperate day so no haircut but with tax and tip it reached $400, and I wanted to tip well cause it was only supposed to go to 5 but it went to 7. But yeahhh after that I just get the Manic Panic, apply it myself no problem with just my hands in gloves, and haven't had issue. Wish he went more into multicolour in this video cause I'm planning on mixing purple in the pink I have and idk how I plan to do it yet. I guess I don't wanna self bleach cause I've seen enough fail vids and even though I'd dye over imperfections with not so light colour anyway, because I don't want to do full head would make it much easier to mess up and do an uneven job on highlights
@@Spoke76 Yeah she back-combed. She told me she would do that but I didn't realize back combing was included, I just hate when others brush my hair when there's lots of tangles so that part was a bit uncomfy 😅 But other than that the process was pretty communicative, I didn't really know how much she was lightening but my highlights were pretty light blonde when it was finally done, I think my hair was just taking a while to take the bleach. She'd take out a few foils, check the others, and say she'd be back in 15, and then in 20, and I probably ended up sitting there for over an hour just waiting for the bleach to be ready 😂 I also was confused for a bit why she put bleach on my mid left side before mid right but took out the right first before left, because the first fade the right side faded out a lot faster. I think it could just be that section isn't holding colour as well, cause it kinda happened with the Fuscia shock I put on it, but not as bad only the bottoms. I've been putting temp peach on those blonder spots cause I hate the blonde lol and I thought a sort of sunset look would be nice. But the temp stuff is annoying to do constantly and it's almost done so I think it's time to add the purple. But not all the fuscia faded out yet. I think I'd have to send a pic somewhere to explain but I def don't plan to bleach I just want to sort of mix the two together, have two colours of highlights, or eventually switch to the Purple Haze I bought. The Fuscia Shock is a little too Barney for my liking 🦖😂 and I don't really like the pink fade as much as a more mauve/lavender fade

So i hope that helps :,)
“Don’t make any impulse decisions” , well I wanted one strip of blonde and now I’m currently bleaching my whole head. Brad, you and I both know your audience is 96% of people making impulse decisions.
I’ve been dying my hair for years and came upon this by chance. I’m pleased to know somebody’s helping people know what to do know. It was so hard to figure it out on my own.
Really tho. He never says anything mean or caddy. He’s like “Girl you fucked up your hair but I’m so happy for you bc you are doing your best and I’m so proud!” He’s like a trendy young Mr. Rogers 😂
Brad is tough as nails and while he has a heart, I don’t, I’d totally tell you to do something completely wrong and then say “if this happens, come see me, I’ll fix it!” LOL. NO scruples. Brads an angel.♥️♥️
Thank you so much. For this. I was very intimidated by bleaching my own hair but can't afford to get it done professionally. You gave me the confidence to try. I learned so much.
Brad is so smart he knows that we all are sitting at home like “i think i should dye my hair” Edit: OMG THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE LIKES! I’m actually about to die my hair lol now ik what to do:)
Ahhh....yeah. Refreshing my memory when I had to read up in the text books about this. It's amazing how many people don't understand how colour works versus your hair. Thank you Brad 🙏
literally nowhere online gives direct instruction like this. its either “go to a salon do NOT attempt” or the most vague instructions ever. this was incredibly helpful
If I was risking my life or smth i would understand not giving instruction but its hair- most importantly its my hair and If i decide I dont want to trust a stranger then thats my problem
@@2000jenhair Yes, wash before color. But don't wash before bleach. Bleach can burn your scalp, and the natural oils from your hair can protect you from that. Literally every source agrees with this. He was talking about bleach in that clip, Jennifer.
each time he says “bleach” you can clearly see him low key cringing because of the idea of someone bleaching their own hair instead of waiting and going to a salon once the quarantine is over. I almost feel sorry because of what I’m going to do. love you brad❤️

I’ve seen some response videos from you on Facebook and I have to say ….. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOU!!!!! I love your reactions, I love it when you point out what went wrong or what was done right. Thank you for making this video. I’ve been dying my hair blue black for the past 10 years now (only at a salon). I used to bleach a portion of my hair and then colour it with magenta. I was browsing the aisles at a chemist and came across purple permanent hair dye. I haven’t dyed my hair in like 8 months, so it looks pretty bad. I had hair up to the small of my back but cut about 10cm off and now I’m going to dye it purple. Wish me luck. LOVE YA!!!
A friend was going to help me bleach and dye my hair but in the end left me hanging. So glad I found this video so I can do it independently! :) Everything is explained so well! Thank you for sharing your wisdom 💜

Yesterday I walked out of my hair stylist looking a bit brassy after coloring my hair to move closer to my natural hair from bleaching balayage for years. Today in natural light I can see, that this color give me NOTHING, it's become kind of a muddy ginger instead of sand. 😭😭 Gonna tone the shit out of my hair. THANK YOU BRAD!!

@MADISON SCHAIBLE if u bleach ur hair once permanent hair dye will work but depending on how light u want it u can bleach ur hair another time. For example me I only bleached my black hair once and applied brown color on it and it was still pretty light it was like a chestnut brown , but if you want ur color to turn out EVEN lighter bleach it again and then add dye

“Gretchen, stop trying to make bleach lather. It’s not going to happen!” Lolol I don’t try to make it lather but I do try to mush it in so I really coat the strands. No matter how thin my sectioning it it still doesn’t get on every strand if I don’t do that. Bleach or color it doesn’t make a difference. I have to HAVE TO mush in it and pull it through (not with a comb!)

As a hairstylist, this video was *chef's kiss*
Many people cannot take time or money to go to a salon so this video is super helpful to ensure they do it right
Salons are closed atm anyway
@@NicosW0rld I agree with you. Isn't it sad? It would be nice to find a hairdresser that knows how to do hair.. Only on UA-cam. 💛🕂💪😷

dye at home
prepare:
- don’t wash hair for several days
- cover your space
- brush hair!
- section into 4 sections: down the middle then from apex (highest point on top of head) down to behind the ear
- make sure hair is dry
mixing your bleach or color:
color:
- 10 vol. does not lift color just applies a tint to hair (i should use for going darker)
- 20 vol. lifts and changes color of hair
- 30 vol. use with brighter colors (lifts hair color)
- 40 vol. like 30 vol., makes colors even brighter
bleach:
- 10 vol. doesn’t work
- 20 vol. 1-2 levels of lift, great to use to highlight hair
- 30 vol. “standard” vol. to use with bleach w/ lightener
- 40 vol. not recommend, if used on scalp extremely likely to burn
*make sure to read directions and get the ratios correct
where to start:
color:
- start with mid-section and ends, then do roots (if you do roots first/at the same time, the roots will be orange)
bleach:
- virgin hair: same as color, don’t start with roots (they will turn white and the rest of hair will be orange-like) wait 10-15 min then do roots
- already colored hair: start with darkest spots first (still not roots) then work your way UP
application method:
color:
- gloves
- you can comb hair
bleach:
- use enough bleach
- put a bag over your head (spray the inside with water) and tie tight (you don’t want the lightener to dry out)
- do not comb or brush through bleach
both:
- start with bottom two quadrants, then work your way up
how long to leave it on:
color:
- whatever the directions say
- normally around 30-35 min
bleach:
- completely varies
- virgin hair (want to go really light): 45min - 1 hour
- rinse out back first, wait about 10 min then rinse out the front
- if you leave it on for over an hour, it’s pointless, the bleach will be dried out
- if worried about hair falling out, pull on a strand from the back and if it doesn’t break or stretch far, you are fine and you can leave it on
cleansing:
- use lukewarm water (cold water causes breakage)
- be gentle: do not scrub scalp with nails, scalp scrubber, etc. use the tops of your fingers
- wash at least twice, more if needed
- condition very thoroughly (hair mask is amazing if you have it)
evaluate the situation (bleach):
- can your hair handle more bleach? if so, go for it! (if below isn’t occurring)
- is it stringy? falling out? super white?etc.
- if the answer is yes, don’t do another round of bleach
*if you used color, you have finished!
toner:
- permanent color is NOT toner
- don’t use box dye to tone hair (for example a blonde box dye)
- mix with anything below a 10 vol. developer (or toning developer)
- apply toner very fast
- use the same level or darker that your hair is right now
- go on color wheel and pick the color across from what it is right now (likely a purple or blue based toner)
- purple shampoo is not a toner
finish and style:
- evaluate (do you want to be lighter? brighter? is this the color you want?)
- be gentle with your hair
- use proper products to take care of and maintain your hair (heat shield, hair oil, etc.)
I beg please help. I got 40 volume devolver by accident. I’m scared to use it please help

*Prepping your Hair*
1. don't wash your hair before colouring it
2. cover your space
3. brush out your hair
4. Separate hair into four sections - Part hair in the middle (two sections) then further divide the two sections from the apex to the sideways, making it four sections in total
5. Make sure hair is dry
6. No need for oiling
*Mixing bleach or colour*
1. choose correct developer: 10vol for no to little lightening effect, 20 vol changes a little colour on your hair, 30 and 40 vol for really dark natural hair colour
2. Read directions on the bleach as it's different for different bleach
*Applying colour*
1. Don't start with roots
2. Start off with parts that are darkest, still don't do roots first
*Application method*
1. Make sure gloves are on
2. You need lots of bleach
3. Start at the back taken from one section.
4. Spray water before covering hair because you don't want the bleach to dry out
5. Don't comb or brush through bleach
*After application*
How long to leave the colour on for?
1. Permanent colour: As the directions say
2. Bleach: 45 mins-1 hour. Not beyond an hour.
3. Wash out the back before the front, wait for ten minutes, then come to the front part.
*Cleansing*
1. Use lukewarm water and not cold water
2. Do not scrub your scalp with nails and tips of your hand. Be very gentle
3. Most of the time it takes two washes to take all of the bleach out of your hair
*Evaluate the situation*
Decide on whether your hair can handle more bleach?
*Toner*
1. Don't use permanent colour as toner. It has a lot of chemicals like ammonia that can cause further damage.
2. apply toner very fast.
3. Choose your toner colour correctly
Use a darker toner
4. Level 1 toner- darkest; Level 10 toner- lightest.
5. Leave toner for the prescribed time; not too long and not for short time
6. *Purple shampoo is not a toner.*
*Finish and style!*
Use proper hair products to maintain and take care your new colour.
May the force be with you! ❤❤❤

Hairdresser’s Guide to Coloring Your Hair
Prepare
1. Don’t wash your hair before coloring
2. Don’t wash it for several days before bleaching
3. Cover your space, floor, counters
4. Brush out your hair, completely detangle
5. Separate hair into four sections. Part your hair in the middle down to the nape of your neck, then make a section from the apex to behind the ears.
6. Make sure your hair is dry.
7. Don’t soak your hair in oil
Mixing Your Bleach or Your Color
There are two different developers
Permanent color is NOT bleach.
1. 10 volume is best for any color and goes darker
2. 20 volume helps with grays
3. 30& 40 volume with permanent color is for high lift color. If you have color on your hair you can’t lift your hair color with more color. You can’t use blonde box dye to lift brown hair color. But if your hair is natural brown you can use the blonde dye to make your hair blonde. High lift colors lift many levels.
Bleach
1. 10 volume sits on top, slightly inside
2. 20 volume is better for highlights
3. 30 volume is best for most hair types
4. 40 volume is a no go, it just lightens very fast.
5. READ THE DIRECTIONS, mix the lightener to the ratio that it says
Where to Start
* Permanent color
* Start at the midsections and ends and then apply root color last. This is to avoid orange roots
* Wait about 10-15 minutes and then go into roots with lightener
* Start off with parts that are darkest
* Application method
* Make sure you have gloves
* Comb through as color is applied
* Bleach
* You need a lot of lightener to get maximum results possible
* Start from the back, at the bottom and work your way up.
* Move the hair around in your palms and avoid the roots
* Spray water inside a bag and put it over your head
* Bleach doesn’t lather
* Don’t comb through bleach
How Long to Leave On?
* Permanent Color: whatever the box says

Cleansing
1. Use Luke warm water, not cold water.
2. Do not scrub your scalp
3. It takes 2 washes, if it feels gritty it isn’t clean

Madeline Montalvo omg this is amazing
is a developer interchangable w bleach or are they both needed to lighten? still kinda confused if u know
Omg so thorough 🧡 thank you
Perfect! A note sheet! 😉🤓
It was my first time doing any color, I usually only cut hair for family and friends since covid.😊
Bleach instructions, typed out with notes:
Don't bleach your hair after it's freshly washed - oil on your scalp protects you
Prep: clothes you don't mind throwing away
Cover floor, etc. with old towels
GLOVES
1. start with dry hair; Split hair into 4 sections
2. Mix:
- Developer:
20 volume: 1-2 levels of lift. great, basic, does the job but still safe; better for scalp
30 volume: RECOMMENDED; higher lift, higher risk; ALSO lifts/lightens previous fake color
- lightener/bleach: read directions, follow ratio instructions!
Application:
3. Start with mid sections and ends. Wait 10-15 minutes, do scalp
- start with darkest color spots
Start at bottom/back of hair, working up
4. Put a (plastic?) bag over hair, tie it up
- spray a little water inside (steamy so it's not too drying)
5. 45 minutes, check because it varies
- Monitor process!
Rinse:
start in back
LUKE WARM WATER (not cold, it shocks the hair, causing breakage)
Gentle yet thorough, don't use nails/don't scrub your scalp
Usually takes 2 washes to get all lightener/bleach out of hair (if it's gritty, wash it again) - (purple shampoooooo baby)
Toner: lays on top of hair cuticle, healthy for your hair
Apply right after
(You can only use the same level of hair darkness OR go darker: for the use of Toners)
Not used to lighten hair, just corrects the TONE in the level you created with the bleach/lightener
NOTE: first time options
- DO SCALP LAST (start by not doing scalp in first session, come back to if a few days later)
do NOT comb/brush it through
Use a lot - you don't want it to get spotty (if you're concerned for your hair health, leave it on for less time); coat it in there
Note: Bleach doesn't lather like shampoo
It always looks whiter before rinsing, will wash out and look more yellow than you think
CONDITION/HAIR MASK to help scalp after
Your welcome.
Plz help?
Bailey Fink you god
Bailey Fink *print*
Bailey Fink bless you,
Thank you , my mom's hair is dark brownish and she wanna dye her hair blond/brown if that makes any sense , which level/number she should use please and do you have any recommendations? Thank u
1) Prepare
- Do not wash your hair (make sure it has oil)
- Cover your space
- Brush out your hair (no tangles)
- Use rolling pin to crush the bleach powder nicely
- Make sure your hair is dry
2) Mixing your Bleach / Color
Two Categories: Permanent Color or Bleach
Permanent Color: 4 Options
10 - No lightening, just tones your hair (doesn't cover grays)
20 - Lifts, changes color of gray hair, permanent
30 & 40 - High lift color, for vibrant reds, etc.
(p.s. You cannot go lighter with color, you will only go darker)
Bleach (aka Lightener): 4 Volumes
10 - No lifting abilities (hair cuticle doesn't open)
20 - One to two levels of lift, for highlights or if your hair is already light
30 - The standard! Highly recommended (Esp. if you have virgin hair)
40 - Not recommended, will burn your scalp, do not use
Read the Directions! Every lightener has a different mixing ratio
Mix correctly, make sure there's no clumsiness in your mixture
3) After Prep: Where to Apply?
Permanent Color:
- Virgin Hair: Start at midsections, ends, then your roots!
Bleach:
- Virgin Hair: Start at midsections then ends, make sure it starts lightening for around 10-15 mins before applying to your roots
4) Application:
- Comb through your hair first and section them off
- WEAR GLOVES. PLEASE.
Permanent Color: Make sure the color is evenly applied
Bleach:
- Putting less lightener will not make your hair lift less!
- how to apply/how much: 12:30
- Make sure your hair is coated
- Start with the back, then to the front
- Put a bag with a bit of water inside over your hair to keep moisture in
- DO NOT COMB OR BRUSH THRU BLEACH
5) How long to leave it on?
Permanent Color: Leave on the dye according to the instructions/directions
Bleach:
- Don't leave on bleach for more than an hr! Nothing will happen after 1 hr bc it dries out
- For Virgin Hair: 45-60 mins
- Wash out the back, then rinse out the front after your timer
- Adjust time to your own personal preference!
6) Cleansing
Bleach: Do NOT use cold water!!!
- Use lukewarm water
- Do not scrub your scalp (it's very fragile)
- 2 Washes if you're using a lot of lightener (until the grit is gone)
- Use conditioner/hair mask afterwards
If your hair cannot handle more lightener, STOP!
Your hair good? Continue but MAKE SURE YOUR HAIR IS DRY BEFORE REBLEACHING!
8) Toner (for Bleach)
- Do Not Use Permanent Color for Toning!
- Do not use box dye to tone your hair
- T-18 is not a toner, it's a color!
Optimal Toner:
- Use a Level 10 Toner (Ash Neutral) with a Toning developer
- Figure out your level: 18:15
- Opt for something that is the same level or darker for a Toner
- Apply your Color Wheel!
Orange hair? Use a blue Toner at the same level where your hair is at
Purple Shampoo is not a toner! Do not use it, it will lead to spotting
Leave it on for the recommended amount of time!
Using a Toner that's a higher level than your actual hair will not lift your hair!
Toner can only darken
9) Follow Up:
- Don't make any risky decisions
- Maintain your Color
- If you need to go for a second session of bleach, do it another day!
- Take care of your hair
I hate how I can't copy on my phone and paste to notes...so I screenshotted all of this in one extended screenshot. Oh well. Still gets me what I need. THANKS A BILLION FOR THESE NOTES!!!!

But he does tell us to go professional lmao
NOTES FROM VIDEO: Prepare (to bleach):
- do not wash before bleaching, this will cause damage, hair needs to be dry
- do not wash hair for several days before bleaching
- brush hair before hand to reduce spottiness etc
- part hair into 4 sections (middle of head and across ears)
Mixing (bleach or color)
>> Volume Tips
- 10 volume can be used on dark hair
- 20 volume will get rid of grays. can also lift 1-2 levels of hair
- 30 or 40 volume will lift color
- if u have VIRGIN HAIR, you can use blond dye to lighten it or you can use 30 or 40 volume
- bleach is for people with already died hair or virgin hair where people want to really lighten
- 30 volume is Brad's go to for lightening hair
- 40 volume is practically useless (in his professional opinion), it'll burn
Application
- start application at midsections to ends, then root color
- the heat on your scalp will cause the color to develop faster so don't apply there til end
- apply to roots after 10 to 15 minutes have passed
- start with application to the back sections
>> Applying Permanent Color
- use a comb to make sure it spreads well
- wear gloves
- time depends on dye (check box or bottle)
>> Applying Bleach
- do not comb through
- do not lather
- for virgin hair if you want to really lighten it: leave in 45 - 60 mins
Rinsing
- wash off back first, wait ten minutes, then wash off front
- use lukewarm water, NOT cold, cold can cause breakage
- don't scrub, don't use nails to wash, BE gentle
- do two washes to make sure you get out all the lightener
Toner
- not required after application of permanent dye, only use after bleaching
- in choosing toner, have it match the level of your hair or darker
- use color wheel to counteract colors @18:49
- toner doesnt lighten ur hair, it helps you achieve a nicer color
Amaranth Elk what if you are trying to tone your hair and first darkened your roots and have lighter highlights and ends? I can’t find the answer to this anywhere . . .I feel like my hairdresser just would use toner over my hair at the bowl, but I guess not???
Thanks for summarizing his video! :)
How long do I wait before I can tone
i have a question! after using bleach, do you use shampoo to rinse it out and use conditioner and does it matter if it has sulfate or not?
gayjin only shampoo after bleach! It’ll stop any leftover bleach from developing

I love you sm

*studies color theory for 4 years in college*
*goes to brad mondo on how to dye my own hair*
Hey , I don't want to damage my hairs , so not dying roots will help avoid damage?
SAME gdksbsks
LMAO
@@dolphin2001 Your ends will become more damaged than your roots
Dolphin I guess so, but if you want to dye your whole head make sure you do ends to roots and that you don’t keep it on your roots as long
Never thought we’d be here. The world truly is on its head.
You’re a hair god Brad Mondo! I’ve been watching you for years without even the intention of cutting, dying or do whatever to my hair. Just love your clips in Fb and yt vids!
Poor Brad. We broke him down for so many years...He was like... I gotta help these idiots. 😂
Lol 🤣🤣🤣
i know it's helping me right now!
😆
Literally 😹😹
Brad: “STOP TRYING TO MAKE BLEACH LATHER!! IT DOESN’T F-ING LATHER!”
Me: “Ok, Regina George...” lol 😂 Love you Brad!
I hope he sees this comment xD
my dude, yeah. i'm probably gonna fuck my shit up trying to cut it. wish me luck!!!
Brad: are you planning on dying your hair?
Me: .... I don’t wanna lie to you brad, I already have.
Amberli Simmons hahaha
Amberli Simmons Totally! :D
Ačiū! Thank you! This video is awesome! Please do not stop♡
“ _Bleach_ doesn’t _lather._ Stop trying to make that happen. It’s never gonna happen”
That needs to be on his merch

oh, he knows. he _knows_

brad’s like “if ya’ll are dying your hair in quarantine, might as well do it right”

@@tdk2460 during lockdown/quarantine? most hairdressers are closed, and ones that are open you're only allowed in for a certain period of time (example in Australia the maximum is 30 minutes)
@@grimrhiper496 I'm sure people can wait to change their hair colour
@@tdk2460 If you watched the video, he explained that many people want to dye their hair because "they want to feel something new". Before I even knew about lots of people beginning to dye their hair and it somewhat becoming the new quarantine trend, I sat in bed at 12 am and decided "I'm going to dye my hair black" and did the same day.
Life is boring. We'll be in quarantine fir who knows how long. Nothing wrong with getting experimental, especially if its a first time and people won't see if it goes bad. Can always do it again! That's what's so great about hair. It grows back :)
I replayed this video 30 times and it's just so much info. I need a dumb down version in parts how to start, what to look for and how to end.
me : calmly taking notes
Brad : gets to talking about toning
