    You do almost the same process I do, we have 4 little Maltese and they range from 13 yrs. To 3 months old. They are extremely healthy and we have no vet bills. Only difference is the brand of supplements. I constantly watch Vets, and Dog Nutritionist to see new things. Nice to able to relate to someone, everyone else seems to insist on adding carbs which dogs don’t need. Thanks for the time you take to help other pet owners. I would only hope that more people watch your channel to see what exactly dogs really need. I’m sure the Vets and Nutritionalist are saying GREAT JOB!!!

    Thank god for you! I have a 14 week old cavalier King Charles. She came from the breeder on kibble. It did not agree with her. She farted a lot and the smell was awful. She also went between having constipation and very wet pooh. Plus she was not interested in her food. So I started to give her our own cooked food. Minus sugar and salt. She woofed it down. I have found so many recipes on youtube about adding lentils, sweet potato and rice and different cooking methods. To say I’m confused is an understatement. So I am so glad I found you and your cavaliers.❤

      You'd be ok with sweet potatoes here and there - but I use pumpkin instead as it doesn't have as much simple sugar and it keeps their poops nice. I'd avoid rice and lentils or any additional carbs - aside of pumpkin, blueberries (or other berries on occasion) and some cruciferous veggies (only 10-20% of the total meal). Good for you for advocating for her!

    Nice video. I've been feeding my Dachshund homemade 6 years 3 months now with guidance from well known online holistic/natural vets with success. The difference from how you feed is I make homemade broth, add eggshell powder, supplement at time of feeding as I learned adding to entire batch can deplete potency of the supplement. I add leafy greens, sometimes herbs making sure to alternate through variety ingredients. Luckily for now able to source calf liver, pork brain, pork and beef liver. I add beef heart every batch as feeding heart is healthy for a healthy heart. I also don't feed starchy carbs such as grains, potatoes, pasta, lentils, legumes, peas. Would love to see more of your videos.

    • @JentasticJourney
      @JentasticJourney  6 місяців тому +1

      That is awesome! I need to find some beef heart - I feed beef liver but I haven't found heart. I am going to try a few local butchers. I do sometimes grind up cleaned egg shells with my coffee grinder but my mineral supplement has calcium in it - so it is not often. I add whole eggs every other batch or so as well. I do also add leafy greens in some batches but not all. Yay for the no carbs!!! I will be making another dog food video again soon. I so appreciate your comments and thanks for watching!

    Thanks Jen for this tutorial. My 18 y.o. lab mix was recently diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. The vet recommended a pricey prescription diet that woud cost close $300 a month for just her but I have 2 other dogs which would make my monthly food cost close to $400. I figured for that much and maybe even considerably less I can make homemade food instead. This is only my second week and I made their second batch yesterday and had pots, pans, bowls and ingredients everywhere. I said there has to be an easier way and thanks to you I found it. Plus I was concerned about making sure their meals were nutritionally balanced and not sure what other minerals and vitamins I should add. This was very helpful. Thank you!

      OK so I looked it up in a fantastic book I have by Dr. Judy Morgan (title: Yin & Yang Nutrition for Dogs).
      Kidney Failure Diet:
      1 lb. Green tripe raw (chopped)
      1/2 lb. kidney (beef, pork, or lamb), chopped or ground, raw or lightly cooked
      4 oz. Lung ((beef, pork, or lamb), chopped or ground, raw or lightly cooked
      8 oz. Butternut Squash, pumpkin or sweet potato - cooked and mashed
      4 oz. Asparagus (finely chopped or processed)
      4 oz. Shitake mushroom (chopped or processed)
      3 egg yolks, raw
      2 sardines, canned in water
      (if you use grains, grains will be lower in phosphorus if toasted before cooking - important for kidney disease.).
      I hope this helps. All of her books are amazing!!!

      Hi Judy- thanks for watching and for commenting!
      FEEDING SUGGESTIONS:
      Feed 2-3% of your dog’s body weight per day. If you have a 17 pound dog, you’d feed it 5.4 ounces daily, if it needs to lose a couple of pounds, or up to 8.2 ounces daily, if it needs to gain a bit. Middle of that is where I landed with mine. I used a muffin batter scoop and measured it on a food scale- for me it was 2 level scoops for my small dogs, fed twice daily (4 scoops total). Then I didn’t have to weigh it again as I just used the same scoop each meal to measure. (Disclaimer: Please check with your veterinarian, for specific feeding amounts for your pet).

    I read bad things about feeding dogs RAW FOOD!!
    I started making my dog hommade food a couple of weeks ago I made a big batch and put it in freezer bags in one cup servings bc that's what I feed her a day...half cup in AM Nd half cup in evening, I give her supplements also...so far so good...she loves it!
    I talked with my friend ( a vet tech of 20 yrs)
    And like what I said so far everything is great!!!
    I will make a couple of changes , add a couple if things...like bone broth and organ meat!

I use 1/8 tsp for my 18-20 lbs Cavaliers and 1/4 tsp. for my 45 lbs lab mixes. If I mix it directly into the batch - because my batch lasts 3- 4 days- I add that up and include 4 tsps. for a batch. If you add whole eggs, the egg and egg shells have calcium. Also I add canned Sardines (with bones)/Salmon every other batch or so, which they are a good source of calcium, as are leafy greens, which I also add, just not every batch. Like you said, the vitamin and mineral supplements have calcium as well. Hello, thank you for the informative video. I am new to making dogfood. The RX vitamin has minerals in it just wondering why I need to add a separate mineral? Also, do I need to add a calcium supplement along with the vitamins and minerals? Thank you.

    • @JentasticJourney
      @JentasticJourney  7 місяців тому

      Great questions! Yes, the vitamin supplement does have minerals in it but not all the same ones. Dr. Judy Morgan, suggested both. She said minerals are super important for dogs. The Mineral Supplement has 500 Milligrams of Calcium Carbonate, Several Trace Minerals and is formulated with a natural seabed Mineral Complex.
      I don't add additional calcium as I believe we are covered with what we use - I add cleaned and ground egg shells (I use a coffee grinder) periodically. I also add sardines every other batch or so, they are high in calcium, as are leafy greens and squashes. Both the RX Essential Vitamins and plus the Minerals supplements have calcium as well. Thanks for watching and for helping your dogs live their best lives!

    Dogs are omnivores, not carnivores! Wow, scary that you have been doing this for 10 years! In addition, if you do your research, you will see that you’re never supposed to add any salt to their food. They get what is called salt toxicity and they can die. And the other fact that you left out is that they should can at least 1 teaspoon of sunflower oil because it is low in poly saturated fats. I don’t mean to be rude but you should really do your research first. I think everybody knows that dogs are omnivorous and not carnivorous. if you research it, you will see that sweet potatoes are a no-no. Especially if one has a dog that is diabetic and requires insulin, you have to be careful with some vegetables like sweet potatoes carrots etc. because this far too much sugar in these veggies. Why are you not adding eggs? You should boil the empty egg shells ..Let the shells dry, add to your blender with some of the juices until the shells are Puréed.Just one more thought, you should be feeding your dogs organic. If it’s not organic it will have been sprayed or the animals have been injected with toxins for most of their life so therefore you should be buying organic everything…..Thank you! I have never had a dog that has not lived to 21 To 23 years of age.

    • @JentasticJourney
      @JentasticJourney  8 місяців тому +6

      Thank you for your comments- I appreciate your honesty. What I've researched is that dogs "domestication by humans guided their evolution from a mostly carnivorous diet to a starch-rich diet". The diet I feed my dogs include both veg and meat. Eggs are in many of my meals, and I do grind the cleaned and dried shells in a coffee grinder, and add that as well. I was surprised at your salt comment as I also mention it multiple times how dangerous salt can be. It's in my description and throughout the video in text and audio multiple times. I'm sorry if you felt I didn't get my message across. I follow a holistic vet , Dr. Judy Morgan, and she recommends the foods I mention. I feed my dogs a little carrot and pumpkin, but not sweet potato very often. As their weight has to be strictly maintained due to heart conditions they had when I rescued them. I do recommend in my video that people check with a vet with specific pet health concerns. As for your thoughts on organic solely, I do not buy organic for my dogs. I also don't eat organic myself- that's a personal preference. I do think that my gently cooked food is hands down better than any kibble or canned food on the market, organic or not. And I do know the results that I've gotten in the blood work of my dogs with this food. My hope is to get people gently cooking for their dogs without strictly requiring non- essential things that could make it financially impossible for them. Again, I truly appreciate the comments and I'm sorry that my content didn't fit your expectations. Thank you very much for watching.

      @@michaelfrey9341 ok SMART ONE! Here is the answer taken from the book on omnivores versus carnivores and are dogs carnivores? Some folks have come to the erroneous conclusion that dogs must be carnivores because they fall under the order Carnivora. A close look at the anatomy, behavior and feeding preferences of dogs shows that they are actually omnivorous - able to eat and remain healthy with both animal and plant foodstuffs..
      In addition, animals do get their salt but through the plants that they eat as well as from The intestinal track and flesh of a animal that has been hunted…
