Devin is honestly one of the most talented musicians we have in our generation. He deserves so much more appreciation... His music might not be everybody's cup of tea, but it's undeniable that he is one of the most interesting and unique individuals we have in music today. He is a master at what he does. He is also one of the funniest guys I've ever seen. Fucking legend.
He's hilarious by nature and phenomenal talent wise. He's a special person and musician that's for sure. Kinda like a Dax Riggs type of special that's hidden from most of the world. A true gem.
Sometimes I see him as a modern day Frank Zappa. Dunno why though;)
@Melodic Concept the thing is, Devin isn’t just a metal player, and he can be very experimental as well. And I’m not even talking about his bluesy-ambient or punk rock stuff. He had this album The Hummer, where he tried to find frequencies that would make objects in studio resonate, he had album Puzzle that’s hard to describe in one sentence, I’ll just say that it’s driven by abstract art and involved contributions from about 60 people and not all of them where even musicians.
He’s not releasing a lot of stuff like that cause most people aren’t really interested in such music and he’s trying to make a living with art.
Guess my point is, he might not be known for crazy experiments, but he certainly is tried to push boundaries in the past, if you look beyond his popular work.
One word on your comment. YES!
@Melodic Concept - Devin Townsends songwriting doesn't appeal to me, neither does Jacob Colliers, it doesn't mean they aren't good songwriters because there's no such thing, it's totally subjective.
Devin's pandemic live stream concerts were amazing. Kudos to him for putting in the effort to entertain us.
I saw him live a week or so before everything shut down. Was my last show for a while.
They kept me sane and I saw him at Bloodstock 2021 which was one of the first big gigs after the pandemic.
@@ElCapitan88 Same. I was at the 1st and 3rd shows of that tour.
you spelled SCAMdemic wrong
Devin is just so fluently human. He’s a beacon of humility and there’s almost nothing superficial about the man. Just a raw, honest, organic human being… with a GREAT sense of humor to boot 😂
Strange, I didn’t see those qualities at all. I don’t know who this is and had a skip through a lot of it. He just seemed like an elitist, that loves to curse for no reason-and not very comfortable in his own skin. But maybe I will look him up sometime. Looks like a lot of people like his work. But I do tend to not understand people that feel comfortable sitting as he is either, ha ha.😝🤘🏻🎸
Don’t you mean boat? 🤣
Totally agree with you. Everytime I see him giving an interview, he's this very down to Earth humble guy. At the same time, when it comes to his music and shows, he's definitely out of this worldand has all of these crazy ideas. Loved the first interview he did with Ola and this one too.
Devin should win the Nobel peace prize, for the services to the communities around the world bring them the best opera metal available. - Devin Townsend
Sure PaL
I kind of think of Devin is this generation's Frank Zappa: Incredibly talented, has a clear vision, chooses who he works with, has an insanely varied discography, not everyone's cup of tea but can only be respected
I think he is a global treasure and needs to be protected!!!
Well put!!
He's also not a proto edgelord like Zappa was (although his edginess was tongue-in-cheek enough to be charming at times i.e. Joe's Garage, which is one of my favorite concept albums).
"Has a varied discography" doesn't mean anything, nah, he doesn't qualify.
One has to piss off people if he want to follow Zappa, otherwise anyone who has more than 3 bands can be the new Zappa.
I have often said the same. Zappa meets Terry Pratchett!
@@guitaristssuck8979
Man I've tried to get into zappa's music but aside from a few pieces its just not for me, but every interview I've seen of him, his thoughtful intelligence and willingness to give the middle finger to the establishment filled me with total respect for the man.
Wish he was still here making music and pissing off the suits.
"When you're presented a glass of life, chug it" - Devin Townsend
Words to live by
I didn’t know who DT was by name. I had never heard of SYL or any of his other projects. Directly after the NAMM Coffee with Ola I went down a Devin rabbit hole. According to Spotify I spent over 88k minutes listening to Devin material. I bought Sex and Religion when it was a brand new cd and he was 19. I remember thinking “who the fuck is this guy?” Now I find Devin to be one of the greatest vocalists in the world. His creativity and sensitivity is exactly what the world needs. Thank you Devin and thank you Ola for all that you do.
You are truly appreciated!!
Too bad deadhead and ziltoid are not on spotify!!!!
88k minutes? That's 1,467 hours... 60 days... you've listened to Devin for two months straight?? :)
How do you put images in a youtube comment??
they are but under "Devin Townsend Band" and not is normal page@@imbaguitar
Like I said before, this mans music makes my heart and soul feel better.. peace
Absolutely 🤘
He has gotten many of us through some dark stuff and back into the light.
I have seen Devin live a few times, but the ones that stick with me are when he was a Teenager with Vai, where he screamed his heart out and had so much agression inside, then recently I saw him in Newcastle in a small venue where he was simply brilliant, not a single moment was wasted, between the stuff from Lightworks Which I Love and older songs there was just this pure showman full of fun and sincerity that is missing from so many bands. Devin is the insane genius musician yet the most Sane man on the planet.
I would ABSOLUTELY see a musical created by Devin!!! He is an outstanding artist and performer!
Devin is so insanely genuine!! It blows me away how open and honest he is with himself and in every interaction I've seen with him. He's a beautiful guy.
insanely geniune and genuinely insane. the guy is a musical genius.
Devin is in a class all by himself. He touches my Soul like no other.
He never talks about his band mates, it’s the Devin Townsend show 24/7 365 days a year.
@@Ronnieklitschko he talked about the people he works with in this interview. I guess you didn't watch 🤦🏼♀️
@@Liz-cmc313 that would be a first for Devin ….because he only cares about himself
@@RonnieklitschkoHmmm, either you didn’t look far enough or you lack the courage to listen. It sounded like you described Ritchie Blackmore rather than Heavy Devy.
@Ronnieklitschko and yet you sound like the one who only cares about yourself because if you were actually smart and had a good brain you would know he mentions his band mates alot not just once but nope you wanna be a jealous dipshit who nobody cares about and won't remember when you pass on unlike devin who tons will remember so just do us a favor and PISS OFF 😡😡😡😡😡😡
I have many reasons to be mad at the world with all the shit we see every day, but I'm so glad to live in the same world at the same time as Dev. He's one of the good ones.
I enjoy hearing this guy talk. I admire his smarts and arts (sm/arts). Thank you Ola for this excellent episode. I really like that multicolored guitar. REALLY lovely.
Coffee with Ola is ALWAYS great. But this one knocked it out of the park. Devin's approach to music and his career is so grounded, so honest, that is becomes almost overwhelming. You can see that when he says that he writes what he likes he is being 100% true, that's not for show. He's doing music for himself, and that's beautiful. Thanks Ola for calling Devin once again.
Also, this is priceless: "the reason I do te things that I do is becase, fundamentally, I'm in love with it".
I've been listening to Devin's music for nearly 30 years. A true Metal Legend.
I could listen to Devin for hours. Such a cool outlook on life and music in general
Check out his album by album breakdown podcast if you haven't already, it's fantastic
I love how both of them look happier and more confident when a guitar is on their hands 😊
This man is a legend
My favorite part about Devin is how relatable he is on stage.
says things like "Pick a tempo" when the crowd is clapping in different tempos. 😂
He just keeps it real and puts out some cinematic HEAVY ass music and I love it.
There is a specific reason that Devin Townsend and Steven Wilson are among my favorite musicians in this world, and they both share a similar mindset with the evolution of their music and their approach. Listening to them talk about life, work and the process of creativity is absolutely astounding to hear every time!
Spot on, their approach to music and life in general is very similar. Steve Vai is in the same category for me.
Deadhead is one of the greatest songs ever written imo
"The universe is fucking amazing and I'm SO dumb" is a quote I'll keep and cherish
hes Real. its refreshing.
34 minutes 20 seconds in
Devy: *pfrt*
Ola: "There ya go"
Well, if you have to summarize everything, that's pretty much it. Excellent session as usual.
A ninja fart
@@ianmaggio9750 Hahahaha
I'd like to think it was his peen, contrary to his original proclimation
You rarely get a more direct correlation between the artist and the art than with Devin. He has this direct and clear translation of his perspective on life vision to his craft, it`s just fascinating. What a great artist.
I hope Mike and Devin continue to work and tour together for many years to come. Mike looks like he has so much fun with Devin; more so than I think I’ve ever seen before.
Listening to Devin in this interview is so Liberating... So much musicality and Artistry without any boundaries....
These talks almost feel and sound like therapy for Devin. He says social interactions drain him but he's unloading here. I guess it says a lot about how much he likes and trusts you, Ola.
this man is a gift. Call of the Void is an absolute masterpiece of music that just never disappoints. His quarantine shows are simply amazing and the one in the studio in the middle of the forest performing Ocean machine is one of the best memories I will take from the lock down and all I need for a Friday night.
100%
I met Devin for a minute at the Warehouse in Tampa, Fl. when I was super young around the year 2000 and I told him he was the best musician in the building and he was so nice and thanked me in a kind voice while smiling. Funny thing is usually a musician will deny it if you tell them that they are the greatest at something but I think Devin knew I meant what I said and he probably thought I was right too. It was Dark Tanquillity, Strapping Young Lad, Napalm Death and Nile. I drove 4 or 5 hours to see SYL that night.
I saw Devin live, years ago, after listening to his music. It wasn't until seeing him perform that I understood the depth of his art. Not many guys like this out there
Devin man.....what an absolute legend of a dude😎🫡
Devin's Voice arrangements with Ola's Major to Minor changeups would be killer on some tunes together
Oh man, I could listen to Devin talk all day. I'm not even that interested in his music anymore, I'm just a fan of him as a person.
It makes me so happy to see Devin finally happy with his process and the music he’s putting out. DTP made some of my favorite albums of all time but even by 2014 with Z2 he seemed like he felt constrained by the project.
Devin Townsend is a LEGEND.
My favorite musician of this generation. Enya metal 🤘🤘
His vocals are phenomenal...
His guitar-playing is amazing...
I would love to see him on vocals and Rhythm guitar for Dream Theater...just for 1 album.
He could also sing for meshuggah. He's that damn versatile
We heard it her first boys. If we want another heavy devy record we need to get him the most relaxed he’s ever been. I say we chip in for a black card for unlimited spa days, yoga, incense, and long format relaxing train ride videos.
Devin is brutally honest, even says excuse me after rippin one... LMAO
There's not a single interview or documentary or any kind of videos with this man that i don't find interesting and inspiring and fundamentaly a moment of pure joy to watch and listen to
Devin is such a great human being with strong rooted and kind values, and he's also (of course) a really talented composer, instrumentalist and singer (one of the best in the world from my perspective), and his music is always part of the top of my favourite songs/musics/sounds that i love (from SYL to DTP) !
Devin is a bit of a trail blazer and reminds me of Brendan Smalls. They both make their visions come true without compromise. 2 badass metal dudes.
What a cool and laid-back interview. Really good entertainment, even for a complete guitar layman!
Just when you think Devin couldn't be more wholesome and relatable he drops a Bill & Ted reference at the very end of the interview ❤
Man, Devin is just the best. Such a down to earth guy.
Devin's live shows are amazing. Standup mixed with amazing music!
Just fantastic. I could watch them for hours.
I love this. Thanks for having Devin on.
My musical hero! Thanks for putting this together Ola.
Good for you Ola and fam
I've never been a massive fan of Devin's music (I just don't get a lot of it; he's an INCREDIBLE talent though, and I LOVED Empath), but I thoroughly enjoy Devin as a person. I've never met the dude, but I'm glad I live during a time where he's one of the more interesting people in this universe, and chooses to let us take a peek into his amazing world on occasion. Excellent interview!
A real pleasure to watch, thanks Ola! and thaks Devin!
I've been waiting for this episode for a LONG time! Thank you, Ola.
Probably one of the best, in depth CWO's ever!
If I’m being honest I love SYL it’s why I started following his career. These days his music doesn’t work for me but I stick around because he’s an awesome, honest and articulate dude and I love that about him. He’s the best. He’s not Heavy anymore but he’s still Devy and that’s good enough. 🤘
There are a lot more of you than you realise. Peak Devin is 1998 (City/OM) and it’s never been the same since… but I’m sure Michelangelo pumped out tons of shit apart from the Sistine Chapel and the David sculpture. We take the gold out of the mud. ❤
When I put a Devin album I know it's not gonna be what I'm expecting, and that's the most fun part of being a fan of his work.
And it always keeps getting better.
.....Lightwork is amazing!
oh yes, i have been looking forward to this!
Such a great interview Love both you guys and everything you do !!!
Always love to hear from devin
God how much I love this guy!
Looking forward to this one, will be great!! 🔥🔥🔥
Love Devin, could listen to him talk all day ❤️
devin. .. one o my heros. thanks ola!
Love ya work Devy. Keep doing your own thing!
Another one of my favorite humans! Such an amazing musician with such an incredible heart for music.
I listen to Devin daily… for reels. Can’t get enough! Keep writing !!!! Wonderful interview.
Man, I could sit here and listen to Devin talk all day. I met him before a show back in 2013 and he was the most humble and calm dude on the planet. I told him about how much him as person and musician have inspired me in so many ways. And he was very appreciative, and wished me well with my musical endeavors. Probably one of my most cherished moments.
Devin is a real treasure. I love listening to him talk.
Was so excited to see Devin Townsend on another Coffee With Ola🤘🏼🖤
I love Devin. Great interview!
That opalescent guitar is mesmerizing! Probably my favorite look for a guitar ever! ❤️
So hyped up for this!
So much wisdom in this. Thank you gentlemen 🤘🏻
Listening to Devin talk about life is therapy!
Thank you for the video, two legends talking like real people, the best!
Love Devin. Very down to earth guy & he is a very talented musician.
Can't wait - this will be awesome 🤣👍
...only now I can't get that portabello mushroom image out of my head.... Thanks Dev 😎🤘🤣
Excellent interview Ola, had a smile on my face the whole time....
Cool that Devin singles out Mike Keneally. He's an incredible musician.
great interview, enjoyed this, big fan of Devin
Fuckin' LEGEND! Devin got me hooked on metal with the "Ocean Machine: Biomech" album, and "Bastard" in particular, when i was 16 ... that's 25 years ago!
He'd be the person i'd pick if i would get to spend a day with any person i want ... as Einstein and Hawking and all the other interesting people are all dead already, and would probably be rather boring anyways. Let's hope current and future generations will get to enjoy him (and his works) a lot longer!
I just discovered Devin in 2022.
Thank you for having him on! Loved this
what a legend!! Hevy Devy, so much respect.
I was stoked about this interview. It’s great seeing him on Coffee With Ola again.
Fantastiskt intressant och underhållande att höra er två konversera. Tackar Ola! 🙋🏻♂️
Such a talented and genius person. So skillfully breaks down complicated problems of life and soul.
Devin is one of my fave musicians and people to listen to talk. Thanks for doing this Ola!
best one yet. love you guys
I cannot wait for this!!!!!!!
Framus seems like such a chill company
Great interview, guys, thanks! I would like to experience 5 minutes inside the mind of Devin.
What a great video. Devin is so cool and you can tell he is very passionate about what he is doing.
The man is so well spoken its unreal but not in an cocky way. As a Canadian you can tell that he's from B.C. This was great!
Devin is always so fun to see and hear him talking... Awesome man and a genius musician.
My two favourite artists together 🎉
I love listening to Devin ramble on. Even if sometimes his albums don't click with me, I always appreciate how he'll just do whatever it is he wants along the way.
Very nice open discussion, Thanks both!
Great interview! Love Devy! Hung out a few times. Awesome, funny dude and beyond talented and unique.
What a fantastic treat for me on a Friday after a grinding week. Thank you both for the camaraderie, respect and genuine interaction!
Such a grear interview. Devin is awesome
Loved this! Loved this so much! Nothing better than 2 greats just having a chat 🤘🏻
Man, i love Devin. He is the coolest guy in metal. Terribly humble, ultra polite, immensely funny. Oh, and very talented too.
