I studied for year, at a fairly renowned music university here in Sweden,
and more than once, when we had theory lessons, the teachers would say:
"if you want more examples of this, after the lesson, check out Rick Beato on youtube. He's got a great video about this"
I think that's a pretty good seal of approval if any.

      My Ola experience:
I’m a very small UA-camr trying to get my footing with collaborating with companies. I sent out an email to a bunch of companies putting my name out there.
Harley Benton’s response: “Nest time you are looking for a collaboration, be sure to not CC this email to other brands ;)”
Solar’s response: “Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately we’re not able to offer you endorsement at this time but feel free to reach back out in the future”
      It’s the little things.

Rick is great because he appreciates music in general and is extremely open minded. He's not the most extreme metal guy but deeply gets it all. If you notice when he talks about death metal etc. he grasped at rhythm and complexity being just as important as other parts of music. He finds the diamonds amongst the coal in music which is why he's so good at what he does. He also can elaborate why stuff really works in music which most "reaction" people cannot do. Some do though and one I do like is the Charismatic Voice. She's great at what she does.

Or the fact that as you get older generally your body just doesn't cope as well with coffee. Or they already geeked out on good coffee before the show. Two of my favorite content makers sitting together. I think you can clearly see how much Ola respects Rick because Ola's demeanor was a little more "serious" I guess you could say. It's really cool that they respect each other and have collaborated. Ola shouldn't sell himself short at all though in terms of his own validity and importance. Ola began his content a long time ago and, whereas his content caters mostly to us metalheads, his reach has spread even further I believe. Heck, I just purchased a Solar guitar recently and much of it is because of how much I adore Ola's channel and vibe. Killer guitar, but it's got a lot to do with wanting to just be a part of Ola's community. Loved the video ESPECIALLY the part where Pix rolled in to get interviewed as well lol. That's another thing, Ola's channel has made me want to get rid of my adorable little dog and go get an English Bull Terrier!

The subsidised music lessons in Sweden probably helps.
How much it's subsidised varies a bit between the different municipalities.
In my own it has been completely free since 2019 and you are eligible from grade 0 - 9 (mandatory school) and 1 - 3 (gymnasium).
Since it's part of the actual school system you are allowed to leave your ordinary classes for your "culture class".
Then of course there are the mandatory music lessons at school as well...

I am happy to be one amongst those who loved the album when it came out. I listened the album a million times. I was into all punk and hardcore and i had a purist vein, but also a experimental one, both feeding each other in my brain. Those were times when people actually were asking "what is punk actually? What is it to be punk, to play punk?" and many brought very interesting proposals. Imho, The Shape Of Punk To Come is in pair with some of the albums by Fugazi.

My two favorite channels! @OlaEnglund I was just wondering - to get a bit more variety in your editing, it would be great to have a camera closer on your guest's face, one close on you and a wide shot and switch between the 3 camera's. The angles are just a bit too similar, which is too bad because it makes the edit look a bit boring. But - great content as always!

Great stuff Ola! I've been following Rick Beato for several years now. I've learned SO much from watching his videos. I highly recommend his Beato Book for music theory and his online ear training course. They've both been incredibly valuable to me and my journey as a musician. And Ola, I too got a little choked up hearing Rick isolate that Dimebag guitar solo. It was SO friggin' cool!

In the beginning it was like you were describing Seattle. The people “blossom” when the sun finally comes back in April/May but doesn’t really settle in until July/August. That glorious day when you can finally wear shorts and a T-shirt, no hoodie/jacket is like a coming to a Jesus moment. Living in Georgia these last 9 years has been a nice change with weather.

The weather out here in the Seattle area is unbeatable at the moment. Enjoying it while it lasts.

@@majesticpbjcat7707 I live in western Washington as well, and this summer has been quite pleasant. Sometimes even forget it's summer. Need more rain though. Looking forward to fall to be honest.

Legendary Interview very in depth awesome this is why I love UA-cam to begin with this interview is top notch you can't find this quality on TV lol.. TV sucks compared to Ola Englund, Rick Beato is a great musician knows everything about music. I didn't know he is from New York he seems to have the New York personality though. New Jersey, Philli, and NY have that attitude towards BS that others don't really have.
BTW: When is Ola ever going to come to the U.S.A. may I recommend either Amish Country in Pensilvania (Horse n Buggy Old Ladies on Scooters and the wonderful Amish have the best tourists and food is awesome Lancaster Rocks), NYC for the obvious, or Six Feet Under old stomping grounds in Miami would be cool to see a tour of where they used to record.
Whatever you do avoid New Jersey.. Seriously its terrible.. I blame the UFOs... 👽👾🤖👀👀👀

One of a Swedish band as well, well ahead of its time was „Eleven Pictures“. The Album Flowerland is mindblowing. Ola and Rick: Would be interesting to hear if you know the band.

7:00 I studied language pedagogy and one thing I remember is that learners have to be familiar with the phonemes of the language until around the age of 12 (pre-puberty) to be able to produce the sounds just like a native. It has to do something with brain development (the cortex if I remember correctly). It becomes increasingly difficult to impossible to pick up the nuances of the tonality or phonemes of an unfamiliar language.
This reaffirms what Rick said about his kids laughing at him for not noticing the mispronunciation haha.
It would be very interesting to transfer this knowledge of tonal hearing and age to music education too.

I'm not sure if that's entirely true.
As an adult I do a lot better with sounds like the Japanese R or that intermediate sound between W and V that shows up in a lot of languages. As a kid I always heard both of those as flips (L in place of R, R in place of L; W instead of V, V instead of W) one day in my late 20s it just clicked that they were additional, unique consonants.
Because I'm very much -not- fluent in languages besides English it catches people off guard when I can repeat a phrase they give me that makes most English speakers stumble because it contains a sound English speakers don't normally make.

I have the same experience as @skaldlouiscyphre2453. Only in early adulthood I noticed the subtle differences between pronunciation and had no problem learning the right pronunciation of all the Arabic letters. I don't think there's a cutoff age for these things, you just need to take the time to listen to these things very closely which a lot of adults won't do.

@@snabdub695 Thanks for responding both of you! The problem we are talking about is called the Critical Period Hypothesis, which suggests that there is an age limit until which learners can acquire native-like language skills more easily. This theory is not universally accepted, but there's evidence indicating that certain aspects of it might be true (since there's a multitude of language skills). It is generally believed that you definitely CAN learn a foreign language at any point of your life, and I absolutely support it too! But both the Brain Plasticity Theory and the CPH suggest that *in terms of accent and pronunciation* it is more advisable to start learning before pre-puberty. My new favorite example to this is Edward Teller (my fellow Hungarian), who lived 3/4 of his very long life in America, but never managed to master the "correct" US accent, sometimes even to the point of being un-understandable, to me at least. There have to be of course examples of mastering native-like pronunciation and accent as adults.
I'm not familiar enough with the field of tonal perception to claim anything about the connection between hearing and pronunciation. I, for one know that my listening skills and accent in English have drastically improved since I've been listening to native speakers all the time. I'm really happy to hear about your language learning successes!
