    The ketchup gives the chicken rice a savory flavor and it helps make delicious omurice easily. It is a popular condiment in omurice and we call the rice 'ketchup rice'. Though, we think you can also make omurice with tomato sauce so you should try it out. ;) Yi Lin Shiang

      I have a question what kind of tomato sauce do you use?
      Is it tomato puree mixed with water or pasta (spaghetti) sauce?
      The tomato sauce part is kind of confusing...=_=;

      lunayen Not sure if your area sells it, but I'm sure she's referring to the kind of tomato sauce you get from a can (like Hunt's)

      We have sieved tomatoes, so, it's almost the same thing.

      I have tried making omurice with ketchup before, but I didn't like the result :/ It taste too sweet for me. Perhaps the ketchup sold in Canada is different than that of Japan. I went on to make an omurice recipe with a homemade tomato sauce and it was delicious. :)
      Thanks for sharing your delicious ideas!

    Dear Chef and Francis,
    Thank you very much for all of the recipes you have shared with us! My husband and I recently visited Japan and I have a lot of very bad allergies. Using your delicious recipes I was able to cook "allergy safe"food for us in the apartment we stayed at. That made me feel very safe and at home in Japan. Thank you so much for that.

    Japanese food always terrified me because, though I loved it, I was afraid of messing it up if I cooked it at home. Chef has made the recipes so easy that I make one of her recipes every few days now! Omurice is a favorite and I like that the egg is still soft. Especially with farm fresh duck eggs. Thank you so much, Chef! Best wishes, always

    Every single time when there's raw or semi raw food on this channel, there's always that one "Ewie raw food!" person. :/ But people will eat mayo and raw cookie dough and cake batter and egg nog without a second thought. Japanese eggs are safe to eat raw. I don't live in Japan, yet I've eaten raw eggs over rice multiple times and never gotten sick. You should not have to worry about food poisoning as long as the eggs are fresh, pasteurized, and cleaned.
    Okay, I'm done.

      Unfortunately, most (if not all?) of us western countries have really shitty eggs, so there is a significant risk of salmonella in recipes that require raw (or undercooked) egg.

    • @reizendefee549

      Well there ARE places in the world where consuming raw egg is indeed unsafe. The US is one of them.

      I just hope that the people who whine about raw eggs are as diligent in hand washing and getting vaccinations as they are with the raw eggs.

    • @xnonsuchx
      @xnonsuchx 10 років тому +6

      Katie - That one in 10,000-100,000 chance is pretty dire. :-) Keep in mind it also matters how the cook treats the egg and how cheap they insist on purchasing them. Even then, most people who run across a bad egg just have, at worst, a mildly unpleasant bowel movement. It's still recommended, though, (even in many other countries) that small children, the elderly and others with possibly deficient immune systems avoid all raw foods.

      It's more of a culture shock and lack of fresh eggs that can be eaten raw. I personally don't mind my eggs a wee raw so long as the whites are cooked to the point they don't make me think of boogers, blegh

    Japan does not any issues with salmonella eggs. The chickens are raised differently and the quality of the eggs are excellent. We in the U.S. do have a salmonella danger. You will notice that the egg yolks in the U.S. are paler in color to those in Jpn.
