- Jim Stinnett, a world-class educator, former Berklee professor, and my mentor, was kind enough to invite me to appear in this online lesson in two-handed tapping. In this episode, I demonstrate some exercises that will develop strong fundamentals in tapping technique. Developing a strong foundation is essential to technical mastery.

Strange irony that the day I discovered Mr Jim Stinnett's work (thanks to your videos, Charles), I saw that he passed away... RIP and respect for what he brought to the music world (sorry for the broken English, I'm French...be merciful).

@@thatdude8884 not really any of those two, but you should check out pv nova. He makes greatly educational yet very fun videos (although he may be quite hard to understand if you are not fluent in french) about music genres, theory or production.

Reason Charles is so good his own integrity but the key ingredient was this amazing teacher who just looked so fun to actually study with and receive Criticism from R I P to the mentor of the greatest bass player to ever grace this earth thanks for sharing

That teacher is super supportive. A lot of teachers are tough as nails, and it can be intimidating and counter productive . 🌬
This teacher probably saw the great potential in him as a player but also composer. Also seems so sweet and so complimentary of him, he would be proud to see him succeed
Imagine, here you can see one of the very, very best bass players listening most respectfully to his Yoda-teacher (who perhaps might not even tap as well as his student can) ...

All the time I wondered where Charles has become a professional. Thank you, now I know, of course Jim Stinnett had something to do with it. Two very sympathetic people. Congratulations Jim, Charles is from my point of view an insane bass player.

That scale exercise makes it sound like an 8 string bass. Excellent.
Because that's exactly what would happen on an eight string bass: you play a note, it rings with it's octave.
I've been watching Charles for a while, but I decided to go to his very early stuff to see what it's about. A few earlier ones were almost painful to watch since he was a little self conscious on camera, the sound wasn't so good, and he wasn't as accomplished. Here, he's coming along and his awesome is starting to show. I think this is a good point of inspiration for those who wonder if they can be half as awesome as Charles: well, maybe. You can see here, he was a LOT more like us regular folks. This gives some insight into how it was done and what it takes. Thanks Charles a few years from now for the hard work.

I think he is the best bass tapper I have ever seen. In fact is at least one of, if not THE best bassists in the world. He literally sounds better than Wooten when he does a Wooten piece. It's amazing.

Nice. This explains where Charles got to the sky high tapping. I had no choice but to tap. Broke right hand, but was stuck on contract to finish 2 years of touring and playing with a great local band. I learned how to play funk with one hand. In short, once right hand was better, I figured..... Why not tap both hands. so in a short time I was now known for this "Stanley Jordan" tapping on bass. Charles. You are beyond where I am on tapping, but very similar. keep up the great work.

Yes the right hand ring and pinky are the hardest to start, even just to make some sound from the strings.

Now I like this Charles! This is what I'm talking about! Do some teaching and explaining about your fundamentals. Keep it up, and forget about Davie 504 and all that shit, I mean your still just as good, but be serious about it and move on into the teaching world. And don't worry about the camera man, just know your a great musician!

Any chance you could make a video on how you setup your bass? Pretty new to bass and I feel like my action is to high and I can’t get it lower without it buzzing badly. It’s pretty high now and it can play clean, but tapping is basically impossible with how it’s setup and sounds like completely wrong notes unless it’s plugged up and it’s very quiet. I don’t have any place local to go and get my bass setup so it’s pretty frustrating atm

I'm not sure I understand. At the end, Jim's bass sound fretless to me, but I can at the very least see fret marks on the neck. Are they simply removed or it's possible to make a fretted bass sound fretless?
A few fretless basses have lines for the bassist's convenience but they aren't "frets" per se. If you looked at them from the side, they aren't raised above the fretboard, merely visual markers. (Edit: it's not a lot, it's a few, it seems that some bassists add them. I'm not a fretless player myself.)
It's called "line fretless" and it is very common.

Talk about a flashback
DAMN! Jim died (i believe) from a massive Hear Attack, and that truth is it "may" have been due to his obesity. I have and do struggle with this too, so please understand me, this stuff is not the result of weakness - it, like type 2 diabetes is a "Political Disease". All the food lobby's that keep our food full of sugar and salt. All the "extras", the miseducation and the consumerism. Damn them. What a lovely guy Jim obviously is. As long as there is a bass playing somewhere, his spirit is with us.

Anyone got idea why my bass out of tune after 12th frets?
If a bass is slightly out of tune, it would be easier to hear that after the 12th than before
The intonation needs to be set up. There are a lot of videos already on UA-cam to explain how to adjust intonation yourself. It's really simple to do...don't be afraid...you'll be glad you did it and proud of yourself, too!

Jim's bass just sounds off....maybe it's the type of strings or the electrical components... not sure. Could just be me.
It sounds like it's been recorded direct with no reverb or amp sim/IR, so it's very very dry.
Charles I love you but what’s up with the hat?
Both are very good however, I think I need my ears checked...(referring to the end of the vid) I heard some sour notes and didn’t seem to flow together...I maybe wrong which after reading some of these comments I would say I am. I just can’t enjoy the ending hearing those notes that seem to not belong. I’m sure someone will tel me how what I’m saying is ridiculous and I’m not worthy a listen. I get it, every guitarist says they can play it better.... I’m not a guitarist, nor am I even slightly close to these guys playing... just not this song for me. Sorry to the fans...

Charles, you should be a session player. Start doing less pretty songs and starting doing upbeat stuff man. Get crazy. You can do anything. Give the majority what they want. You can still do the pretty stuff but show your elite. Please

Jim Stinnett speaks in such a patronizing way its distasteful. How do people go through life being so rude thinking they are being polite when they are condescending?
He's a teacher, this is a professional demeanour when teaching. Its welcoming, inviting, encouraging and neutral. He must work with small children a lot while teaching. I think your response to his manner is a glaring example of being too prideful. If you take offence to someone being peaceful and kind then THEY aren't the problem.

Russell that's really ridiculous, it's pretty obvious Jim is using interview techniques and explanation for other students. It's not in the least patronising nor rude but an example of a coach/teacher explaining something.
If you criticised him for the thigh slap, which Charles then wiped, that would be valid. Standards have changed, it unfortunately used to be common

Jim was one of the greatest bass teachers ever. He was a professor. He was an extremely humble man who wanted nothing but the best for his students.
We could all take a lesson in how to conduct ourselves from Jim Stinnett.
