- In the U.S.,the Timberland boot is widely recognized as a fashion staple. But that wasn’t always the case. Throughout the ‘90s, the Timberland brand went through a massive expansion, seeing revenue climb over $1 billion in 2000.
Timberland’s rise was not without controversy. In the early ‘90s, hip-hop stars on the East Coast adopted the boot, and sales began to climb. At the time, hip-hop wasn’t mainstream and the strength of black spending was often overlooked by marketers.
Throughout Timberland's rise, its executives would learn to both respect and embrace their evolving consumer base, which would change the trajectory of the brand forever. Here’s how hip-hop helped make Timberland a billion-dollar brand.

@Raniere Not at all. The brand stands for "For.Us.By.Us" it was directed at black youth, but particularly fans of hip-hop culture. There weren't many brands that celebrated and were directed specifically for that culture and FUBU's aim was to be that.
Plus there is no correlation to FUBU and what brands like Hilfiger and Timberland did. If white people, or a subculture created by white people, were the sole reason for dramatic increase in profits for FUBU and FUBU decided to never admit their influence and hated white people wearing it...then you would have a point. But that didn't happen.
It's important because black people, and subcultures created by black people, have historically been ignored in their influence of increased profit by brands as though they didn't want to be associated with them, but continued to profit from them.
Your influence??? Lol trying too hard to make it look like hip-hop was the one that boosted its popularity. Just because it started from X doesnt mean X made it popular. I wear Timberland Pro boots st work. I've tried multiple different brands. I was burning through boots like crazy. Timberland definitely makes a great work boot. I won't consider trying any other brand. So yeah, they are above everyone else.

It's like a paradox. As a black man, i find myself criticizing the black community a lot for spending money foolishly on shoes and clothes and fancy cars, then realize the community inadvertently supports the economy by their actions.
We support the economy, but the economy doesn’t support us (they don’t even hire us, but ship their jobs to China and Vietnam) so it is foolish to make these white owned corporations rich, while we make ourselves poor.

I love the durability of these boots and they are very stylish and classy looking. I owned the same pair of timberlands for 10years before the urethane sole final was starting to come off. Timberlands give you the best value for your money.

The original Timberland boot that become popular in the hood was the "Super Tim." Not the yellow nubuck boots. They were a status symbol for drug dealers because they cost $300 dollars and they looked good. In DC, the ultimate drug dealer look was to wear your Super Tims along with a $400 dollar Eddie Bauer coat we called "the Bear." In addition to being a status symbol....the outdoor gear allowed drug dealers to hustle on the block in the middle of winter for hours at a time and even in the middle of snow storms. After the Super Tim trend...everyone started rocking black Tims. After the black Tims...everyone started rocking the nubuck Tims.
I had lots of timberlands, not the trademark boots but I have to say they were so rugged and qualitative!

The was my obsession in high school. It was the status symbol. It was crazy. I could have given a finger for timbs back then.
I don't know the status of popularity of Timberlands boots nowadays but they are quality boots. I use them for gardening and doing yard work and they are very sturdy and comfortable. They are also great winter boots that can withstand rain, snow and low temps and your feet feel fine.

Timberland I believe cheapened the quality of the boot with increased popularity. Initially Tims were made for construction so they were waterproof and built to last. Now being that it's more of a fashion statement thanks to the hip hop culture, they've lowered the quality. That's what I believe.

Few years ago I bought a pair of the heritage boots for 229 €(!!!) and the inside was after a few months broken. In the back of the foot.
And I saw often that there was pieces of glue on the boots. Really sad, but all workwear brands are not as they were in my opinion.
Dickies, Carhartt etc. They became in Europe Fashion Brands and their quality was less good but the prices are climbing up. It's really sad Homie!

Timberland here in Italy are still going strong even tho not even near to the later '80s, but about the '80s in Italy you have to put it into a specific contest, which has *nothing* to do with hip-hop (that followed a completely different trend here).
In those years (which I remember well as I was around 12/13yo) in Milano a phenomenon grew up very very strong. People (typically from the high and upper middle class) gathering around S. Babila square and having their favorite place in a sandwich shop named "Al Panino" (in En: "At the Sandwich). Those were the years of the economic boom of the city, the white collars with luxury cars were all over and these teenagers were differentiating themself from the rest by wearing specific clothes (mostly) coming from abroad and very expensive.
I remember among these brands: Timberland shoes, Armani jeans, El Charro belts, Frye or Durango "cow-boy" boots, Moncler, Uniform, Avirex, Schott and (later) Barbour jackets, burlington socks and so on. These clothes were highly sought after, but difficult to reach for any normal-income family: my father was a tech designer working for Leonardo helicopters back then, and his income was around 830US$/month (1.650.000 italian lire); my mother was a nurse, her income was around 620US$/month (1.200.000 italian lira) and a pair of Timberland boat-shoes was around 170US$, a Moncler jacket more or less the same, a pair of Armani jeans was 60US$ (remember, I'm speaking of ~1988), a Schott leather jacket was 400+US$.
To make a comparison a dinner out for a whole 3 person family was ~15US$ for pizza, beer, sweet and coffee.
So yes, in those times there were people mugging others of clothes, definitively true! It's more or less like now for latest iPhones and such.
Almost every majour company out there neglect their black consumers who actually MADE the company. It's fair to say, the 2 billion dollar empire the Schwartz Family made selling to the VF company from the 90' to 05' is solely due to the black dollar, they will never admit it but they are sitting comfortably in their many multi-million dollar homes. That's the problem with black people, they almost never spend in their own community historically, or even create innovative business that can take off like the Tim's. It's now starting to catch on with Kanye's Yeezy and MJ's Jordans but there's not enough. When is the last time you heard of a biopharmaceutical company that is black-owned? Not really, sure there is the lack of capital or access to it dilemma but we have got to diversify.
They should have been boycotted when they had the chance, so they understand black powernomics. This is only one company, imagine how many out there have made money on the backs of black people while having been already privileged by society. This post create a fire in you to do the same thing they did except you will give back to you own community and while creating wealth for your bloodline.

I got the dark brown suede Timbs that Rihanna wears, I've had them for over 15 years, a bit scuffed up, but still holds up great. I still often wear them in the winter time.

Timbaland worker boots were always popular amongst field techs etc especially in north east and Canada. Hip hop obviously had good taste in wanting to rock em and in turn helped raise the retail price. Like that style much more than what the youngins are rocking today.

From jump I’ve been a sneaker head but at one point in my youth I HAD to have a pair of Timbs yo. I remember my parents buying my first pair of and they couldn’t comprehend why they cost so much. Black suede jawns ( everybody had buttas so I had to be diff ) I’ll never forget-total came to like 115$. They made me wear them like everyday 😂

I'm not a follower but the first time I used timberland for work was one time that I worked 50 hrs non stop. My feet were hurting like a MTFKR!! On one breake I went to ross and I saw son tim pros. I bought a pair and for the last 10 years my feet had been walking on tims 90% of the time.

I bought a pair of new but discounted Timberland boots, the outdoor hiking style and after just a few months the seam connecting the soul and body of boot broke, now I wear them everywhere and all the time but for 80$ I thought I might get more use. The brand Hi-Tech is cheaper I think and they last, Good Day and Energy to All☀️🐞🦋😊👍🙏💚🌲
