It used to be free in Australia. Then conservative governments decided to adopt the American model. The quality of education has suffered because university is now just marketed as a place to get your piece of paper. People pay, they expect the paper. So standards for passing are dropped so that everyone gets their “product”. So for us, the days of University as a place to produce informed, active and inquiring citizens has gone.
Universities not only get State funding and large tax breaks but also spend million of dollars on sport programs and still pull in mass amounts of capital. Few Universities are struggling and many could do this.
How more universities don’t do this is an absolute shame. Graduating with debt after college is one of the biggest failures this country is leaving behind as a legacy of how higher education has become a financial burden, and, subsequently a long-term debt that in some cases costs more to obtain than you may benefit from. The top students by test scores don't get to go to the fanciest schools, unless their family is rich. There aren't enough scholarships to support our best minds every year. Each student only owed around $2.26k on average, so if they paid for all that upfront, it would still hurt but probably not massively.
God I wish my private HBCU will do this when it’s time for us to graduate… we have gone through so much during this pandemic… so many mental breakdowns from my classmates. But we still made it through to the next phase. I’d be so happy if this were to happen for us too 😭
This just saved so many people long term stress. Friends of mine, close to mid-late 30s, are just getting out of debt. NY to live is expensive enough, the unreal expectations of $50,000 a semister as a personal example ;for me to make what i owe, is like an invisible mortgage. I know people who will be in major debt who are walking panic attacks at times from it. Paying to make a better, smarter, country, peers, society, whatever it might be shouldn't cost as much as it does[shouldn't cost anything, some nations thrive on unmotivated, uneducated, stressed people from pharmaucal companies, the school itself, vulnerability is good for many major/not so major -aspects of life. And this is a wackado status quo. College is less and less what it was, and harder to afford. With technology, being good it can make schools ramp prices up ;that is on the university to be wise about where $ goes But all college really is for most pepple is sitting in a room or looking at 15 faces in a chat room. This makea me feel so good.

Also 375k for 2 classes is not much. Average student owes at least 25k

Best way to show your appreciation is to put the education to good use...if you can build a business and give back please do so, if you end up in a high end job thats cool too...dont chill tho and relax because you have no student debt...PLease hit the floor running!
