“When would they have time to be a kid?” Hearing that hurt and made me feel better at the same time, sort of a melancholy feeling. She is a good teacher that cares about people’s lives.
being a kid for her means working, worrying about food. If that's what they have to do, it is in very very low social cirumstances. Maybe she should give some homework, so the kids will be educated to make a better living later on.
It's not even the fact that she dosent assign hw to her students, it's that she actually acknowledges that students aren't just robots that go to school, they are people, they have their own lives to live out and enjoy
Also a better eatting and sleeping schedule does help with productivity in schools. Plus all the homework that gets done at home is usually for school anyway so it can easily be done at school with the help of a teacher I did all my homework when I was in school when I was younger actually at school and still passed school. Rather than spending my at home hours doing homework Because I already had the work done for the original due date to turn it in. It’s like the teacher said some of her students need a better sleep schedule and don’t need to spend hours doing something that a teacher at school can help them with.
I thought the same. I am a university student and even in college I am hesitant to participate in my classes because some of my teachers are just super condescending and have a sort of “you will learn this or else” kind of mentality which really stresses me out. I don’t know if it is because I’m mainly in the sciences, and as a science major you are taught to face criticism head on because that’s simply how science is, or if it is all in my head or if it’s just my university. Despite of this, I strongly feel like I am in a constant state of fear when I attempt to ask questions. For example, one of my professors asks students questions randomly and it’s like he expects you to answer his questions no matter what, he expects one as a student to sort of have some type of breakthrough/ out of this world type of thinking that sometimes really bothers me. I just wish that professors and teachers would all be on the same page when it comes to educating the next generation because after all we are the future of not just this country but the world at large.
Ikr? I had so many stress from school, always stayed to finishing assignments, and school just thinks if you fail something you're considered a failure.
She's thinking about her job, as she should, not being a drone who collects a paycheck. She recognizes they are people. Teachers and administrators should be trained to implement this type of paradigm and philosophy.

My grades drop because of homework, if it wasn't graded/assigned then I would be pulling A's and B's but now since there's 5 assignments from each class a day it just stresses me out to the point where I have just given up. My grades dropped to C's and D's not because of my tests, purely because of my homework.
I feel like most students sometimes cheat with homework, but during school, they cant really cheat because the teacher will be there, so they learn more during school. so i feel like homework is sorta useless. P.S: if you dont cheat on your homework, thats 100% fine, its just that most students do.
Also some students aren’t in the mood to due homework when they get home from school if they can just do it in the class with their teacher around to help them out with their School work. There’s no reason to send the work home with the students if they do it in class with the teachers are around help out with questions. School hours are there for studying and learning anyway met as well Do the school work that’s usually for home while you are at school with teachers to ask questions to when you need them. I always did my homework at school during school hours so I wouldn’t have to worry about bring it home 24/7. Plus half of the homework half the time is multiple choice questions that you can guess on even if you don’t always get the right answer at least you still answered the question that was given on the homework.
This is correct. I usually cheat on my homework. I just look the answers up on the internet. I have better things to do. School work is ment to be done at school, not at home. It is a waste of my time and life.
Focus. Discipline. Effort. Just making more work doesn't equal greater results. Homework is a way of shirking the responsibility of teaching effectively.

I remember being SO stressed out in high school. I had AP English, AP Spanish, AP History, honors calculus, physics, honor level studio art (and other electives I can't remember right now) plus clubs after school (newspaper, creative writing club, Spanish club, National Honors Society)... I had all of that on top of HOURS of homework, babysitting my siblings, sometimes making dinner if mom was running late at work, helping out with laundry, and doing dishes. I can't imagine having a job in addition to all of that. I ended up dropping my AP History class and felt horrible about it. And before anyone says that I didn't have to take all those advanced classes and extracurricular activities, bear in mind that students are told non-stop that they have to have a competitive GPA, a rigorous and diverse selection of classes, and extracurriculars to get into a good college. Don't even get me started on parents. My folks were immigrants from a dirt-poor country in the Caribbean, so education and doing well in school was huge with them.

Yea, he doesn’t even trust his kids with school. Christ.
@y2k. diane I don’t think you get my point either lad, I was not saying we ARE Elon Musk-just giving an example. Many people drop out and still become successful, and that’s because they truly have passion for what they are doing. School is not all you need to succeed in life, that type of mindset has just been drilled into our heads because so much of our fuckin life is dedicated to trying and getting some high number on our report card. Sure, dropping out can make things challenging, but don’t go around telling people how to live their life. Whatever they do is not our business to meddle with.

@Bob Mills It's not that not all teachers are dedicated. It's that she has dedicated herself to her goal of organizing her structure and her teaching methods in such a way she can relieve her students of the task of homework. She even admits that there are classes where Homework is a thing that just has to happen. As a former HS English teacher, I know where she's coming from on that. I did my best to make sure the only at-home work my kids had were extended writing assignments. Things that didn't have to be completed over one night, but that the process of in class would take away from the lesson. I didn't like sending home random stuff just for the sake of it. At that time, I had two classes each taught three times a day over six periods. I only had to plan two lessons a day. Another year I had eight classes over a six period day (two classes were alternating days) and organizing THAT maddness took all my energy some days just to stay sane. I feel for the teachers in smaller school districts, or with over-crowded classrooms where the focus ends up on just keeping things moving forward and more or less on task. It takes a calling to be a teacher!
Man , when I think about it , Indian education system is LITERALLY THE WORST (ok, maybe better than Pakistan and Bangladesh, but that's about it) . I have not learned a single thing which is relevant or significant for our future. They just teach you everything, and expect you to rote and memorize all that and then vomit on the answer sheet. Any useful thing I have learnt, it's either from other books or movies or a series. What they teach at schools has almost 0 relevancy in our lives. Many of us don't have a social life or any hobbies, interests nothing. They be sitting there like goddamn robots and spouting facts. No one places any importance on mental health ( according to Indian parents, mental health is an issue which happens only in 'Western' countries ). Social life is generally frowned upon, and not encouraged by most parents. You can't have a boyfriend/girlfriend I don't know why. Intimacy and affection is a kind of taboo thing in India, you literally can't even hold hands with an opposite gender whithout being judged and frowned upon ( and a probable scolding, if not a thrashing, if your parents get to know about it). A common thing most kids engaged in extra-curricular activities (read, those who have a life) have to face is that they are often talked about as no good kids , that they have no further scope in dancing, singing, football etc. Most of them also have to leave their hobbies, interests or pursuits when they reach 10th grade cause we have AISCE exams, which are considered very important to choose our streams for 11th and 12th grade. Basically, students should be creativity-less kids without any values apart from bookish knowledge , having no critical thinking, speaking , or for that matter, any kind of social skills. When I look at myself, I realise that now I don't even have a choice of doing anything else except studying the same old PCM ( physics, chemistry, maths ). We get loads of homework ( 5-6 hours minimum) . THIS is the problem with Indian education. It leaves you CRIPPLED and DEVOID of any valuable abilities and skills. Though I don't know about American education system in detail ( only from movies and serials) , you guys probably have it better than Indian students. Thanks for reading my long answer 😘 and please, ponder over this. Peace ✌️

Josh Bridges, not necessarily true. The concept of paying attention and actually learning the material in class is very helpful for practical learning. I studied physiotherapy in University and many people struggled if they weren't able to learn in the classroom when you had lab teachers and materials available. In the video she acknowledges that some subjects can't avoid homework. However, she is teaching a valuable life skill about time management - apply yourself in class and get the work done so you don't have to bring it home. I had an English teacher in grade 9 and 11 who had a similar approach and she really fostered the joy of reading. It also allowed time in class for discussion and individual help.

The quality of life for teachers is probably better there too. Many teachers in the US are underpaid and have to work very long hours compared to other countries.
When I was an elementary school teacher, I hated assigning homework. I honestly didn't see a ton of benefit for 75% of my students. I did see a benefit with my students that struggled most. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to make the choice that this teacher did. Our county required a certain amount of homework assigned, and if I didn't assign it, I would not only be in "trouble" with my principal, but parents would also complain. I'm happy that this teacher is able to do what she feels is best for her students. Good for her!
@Mike Lopez the comment literally said not doing homework benefitted 75% of the class. Teachers should have optional work for students who are struggling so the 75% don’t have added pressure.
@Mike Lopez I don't see that as any gap at all between the 75% and the 25%. Different people learn at different paces. And by "learn", I'm not talking about memorization, but by understanding the concept being taught. Jen, the teacher, simply observed that 75% of her students learned at the sufficient level of pace according to their grade standard as dictated by their local district school board. During the next school year that percentage can be around the same level or vastly different. Hence why other replies on this thread have been telling you that policies when it comes to assigning homework needs to be reviewed and improved. One of the suggestions is to give teachers the discretion to assign optional homework to those who feel like they are struggling or to those that simply wish to have more practice (even if they've already thoroughly learned the topic). And when it comes to changing/improving policies, that power often falls to the local/regional district school board.
Why can’t all my teachers be like this, they think that just because we’re home means we have time to do 5+ assignments for homework in each class and it’s so overwhelming, it’s been months since we’ve actually been at school, we need time to switch back into that mindset and routine, pushing it on us only makes it worse :(((

exactly my point school says to get enough sleep and to have a positive mindset but how am I physically supposed to do that when I have 1 essay a test to study for, math practice problems that take me 5hr+ it never makes sense I just wish I was young again to appreciate the times I didn’t have to stress over that.
And then schools are wondering why kids end up with anxiety, stress, depression, etc. Children are humans too and like all humans, they have breaking points.
@Ethan Jamesyes but there are some kid that are not lazy they r just stressed why teacher is giving them so much homework projects assignment so that's why they choose to play games instead of doing homework. They wanted rest.
I am a teacher myself and I have never given a homework to my students and mine is so much the same reason as hers.... proud of her for what she does. I too love the part when I am connecting with my students and and knowing them better so we could together work on the progress of the child and mine alongside.... because remember.....A Teacher is a Learner forever.
I agree! If i was a teacher. I would never assign homework. Just class work. That's it! High schoolers don't need home work either. Let them b kids. Go home sleep, do what u want ❤️❤️
The worst part is, it doesn’t matter how many millions of people can watch this. Not a single other teacher or school will even consider having an open mind to listen to this. Almost every teacher I have assign multiple tasks, and they’ll say, “That first one should only take about 30 minutes, and then the second maybe an hour. No big deal”. Is that literally a joke? Every class assigning that much work especially while adjusting to the new way of learning. They’ll acknowledge other teachers post too but just don’t care, “Oh well you just have to find the time”. Not only that, almost every teacher I have completely ignores us on weekends if we email them questions because apparently that’s, “their time”. However we are still given this same workload over the weekends. I know my school is one of the absolute worst, and I could literally go on and on for hours about why and still one one would listen; with that other schools may not be quite as bad. However it seems like I’m hearing this sort of thing happening in other schools very often. The education system in our country has been a failure for too long, we’ve been trying to do something for years. Maybe soon we can actually get somewhere.
Actually many teachers agree with her. I am a teacher and do not assign homework for the very reasons she’s cited. I never have in my career. I also have snacks for kids that are hungry, and have a break area in my room for kids when they get frustrated or overwhelmed. Kids are human just like adults.
Not only the education system in your country, but the education system in almost the entire world, there are schools that finally learned what actual teaching is but i'd say arround 90% of the other schools in the whole world just have the same system of 100 years ago
It is even harder for students that have undiagnosed learning disabilities. We didn’t find out most of my disabilities until end of 7th grade. So first few years I struggled to do home work on time and it would take twice as long as everyone else. Even more if it was a reading assignment. So I had to focus on getting my assignments done to keep my grades up. Which caused me not to have many friends or social life.
It actually does if you don't know how to do it and ur parents don't know how to do it either and you try to look up what you need help with but everything is useless
@@cloudyxvibes2974 So, what you're saying is research is helpful, not homework? Because self-guided learning has been proven to be incredibly effected. Homework? Not so much.
This is one of my biggest gripes *as a parent*! Kids don't need full days of school and then to bring their work home with them. It's not even a good work ethic!
@Long-Tailed Charmander YES my legal studies would say her weekend is full and I was always why do you keep assigning homework just stop assigning homework and your life would be more easy
Opposite for me. My favorite teachers were all history and English teachers. Most of my math teachers are the kind to assign a full homework assignment on the first day of class. I’m always able to feel connected to teachers that are calm, nice, and have a good sense of humor, which math teachers at my school just don’t have
Fun fact: Homework was originally a punishment, not extra practice. Homework is not added learning. If you don't understand the material already, you're not going to learn from. Parents are unlikely to remember enough to be real help, so the kid is on their own. The classroom provides a space where they should be able to get help. They don't have that at home. Also, when I was in school, at least half the students didn't do their homework and would just copy off others.
Yup who tf actually does hw to learn or to get better? Isn't that what school and the study guides are for? it's basically just a regurgitation from class and sometimes even it's bullshit we haven't learned yet so you have to search it up
This is mostly true but sometimes I don't understand the lesson and doing the hw helps me understand it better, I feel like HW should only be assigned when students aren't 100% confident they understand the lesson/ they don't understand (but not necessary to complete) to try to understand it
@@turtlechamp8325 That could work IF the student chooses to do it. If the teacher grades it, everyone will have to do it, even the students who understand, so no guarantee there either.
I feel like most of my assignments at this point are so uncreative an dumb as well as stressful. I had to create citations for my own opinions. The whole point of a citation is that it’s proving a fact, why would I need to justify an opinion? 🤷🏻♀️
Most of my teachers "don't assign homework" but I always get it as in finishing "classwork" that they know I couldn't finish. Also building a relationship with a kid in class is unprofessional and I think she most likely assigns kids to finish "classwork"
I think you should assign homework just incase a student wants to actually learn I have found homework to be very beneficial with the practice it provides it allows my grades to be higher rather than the students that don't work from home there grades aren't as good school is pointless without revision as a 17 year old in college in the UK it is extremely beneficial I just don't believe in punishing students for not bringing it in or doing it should be there decision wether they want to be successful or not

Because the school system keeps kids busy so they can't learn about things that they are interested in or things they want to pursue a career in. They have to do a bunch of pointless things. So many people agree its pointless stuff they are learning, but they say "just get it over with so you can get your diploma". I was reading animal farm for my english class and i realized that the totalitarian pigs were just like the school system, keeping us busy so we don't have time to think about how pointless it is.
Wanna reaally know why? Because teachers don't really care about students, they do it for a job because they're clueless of what else to do. They also care more about how they look towards the administration of the school compared to doing what's best for students.
it depends the type of class that the teacher teaches...i might be wrong but id guess this teacher is teaching a group of students that are more focused on entering the workforce when they graduate as opposed to college so it probly benefits her students to have less homework and more time for real life and work experience. if this was an honors college prep course there would prob be much more homework..also this teacher i can bet has a great relationship with her students so they are proplly gettin more out of her class with no homework than they would out of a class with more hw and an out of touch teacher
Meanwhile in my school: "We encourage our students to work hard!" *Gives students over 300 pages of assignments with daily activities that only wastes our time*
@Perry the Platypus look whether you agree with him on politics or not he definitely has a iq built for specific things like business: to be able to do the things hes done in his life he has to have a higher than average iq its not even a debate.
so um, can teachers stop “attacking” her. Some teachers are hella strict and gives 100 of homework to the students that actually have done their job at school. Some teachers wouldn’t even give students free time to relax and all of that stuff. Each teacher has their own way, no teacher needs to be like the other teacher. So in my opinion, i like her teacher way.
Most of my teachers "don't assign homework" but I always get it as in finishing "classwork" that they know I couldn't finish. Also building a relationship with a kid in class is unprofessional and I think she most likely assigns kids to finish "classwork"
we need more people like her, its like other teachers just expect kids to go home, do homework, and live normal lives. Alot of teachers assume that students dont have anything going on in their life that more important than homework, and it makes it worse when you explain how busy you were or how you werent able to get it done and they just assume its an excuse. Respect for this teacher
I legit had a teacher who said forget wasn't a word. So if you said " sorry I forgot my homework can I bring it tomorrow?" And she would basically say bullshit you just didn't want to do it
@@benjat08 Same. She shut up real quick when my parents asked her why she wasn't respecting the fact that I had a known symptom of celiac disease where i forget a lot of stuff really easily. Didn't tell me I never turned them in, I would miss turn in dates because of doctor appointments. Then when asked said that "forget" wasn't a word. Her face made up for it. I'm not in public school anymore
As a single parent, I found homework a chore after working all day, taking care of housework, meals, and then helping my children with homework. This teacher has a point, not only for students but for their overwhelmed parents!!
I agree, parents have a lot on their plate when they get off from work. Especially if they have more than one school age child. Regardless of single or married status it’s parents have a short amount of free time to spend with their children after dinner is done. Before you know it they have to get showered/baths and prepare for the next day. Parents jobs never end just because they leave their day/night paid job. 🤷🏾♀️

Teacher: "I dont give out homework because I respect there time outside of school" *Everyone liked that* Edit: This was purely meant to be a joke, I am sorry for anyone that is offended.
I didn’t. Homework is important because it gives children a sense managing their own time. It also helps strengthen the fundamentals of what a child learned. With that being said, Homework shouldn’t take more than 2 hours a day in order to respect a child’s schedule.
@@Ty-vj4wg yes what a child learned if they didn’t understand the concept why give them a sheet that they won’t understand and then grade it. All it does is make that student feel like an idiot trust me I would know I still go to school all the kids that didn’t understand the concept and fail the HW feel like idiots. And plus you clearly didn’t listen to the video she respects what the students do outside of school clearly your don’t you are one of those people that thinks it’s practice when really it’s not when you don’t understand your one of those people that don’t respect any kid that has other IMPORTANT things to do like what she mentions.
@@Vr6.christos I "don't respect any kid"? I am a kid, lol. The majority of HW I have done in school is not graded but you still must attempt it. In your case, if they get a bad grade then it is because they didn't pay attention or understand the topic. It helps the teacher know the students weaknesses and if they need to teach it again. With that being said, grades do not matter anyway. School is to help kids learn. The HW is to determine whether the kids learned the topic in class. If kids fail the HW, that is because they don't pay attention or didn't learn for some other reason. It notifies the teacher that they need to re-teach the topic and/or go over the HW to help strengthen the fundamental skills of the topic. HW is also practice so that students don't forget what they learned in class. As I said, HW also gives students practice of managing their own time. Most teachers respect what their students do out of school by not giving over-the-top HW. HW shouldn't be long. Only about two hours of HW gives students time to do things un-school related activities (sports, work, hobbies, using the internet, spending time with the family, eating diner, etc.) while still accomplishing the things I said in the paragraph above.
@@Ty-vj4wg But as the teacher said, some students are in specific situations and they can't do their home for whatever reasons. So it wouldn't be fair. Yes life ain't fair either way but that does not mean we can't make it fairer, especially as kids. Also, 2 hours you say? Our teachers gives us 4h+ hw which school you going to

Bruh I do its crazy 😂
Till this day I have to start my homework during other classes or wake up at 4 am if I want free time later in the day. For gods sake even my brother in college gets less work and hes going for a hard job

Empathy would include calling child protective services if one of your students isn't getting food at home. That's child neglect.
@Shadow Croix I just hope she's reporting child neglect or she's contributing to the problem. Patting a kid on the head or whatever is happening when they report their feelings to her isn't empathy.

@@Tradetek1 Yes, I agree. Though, things change over years. Maybe it’s gotten tougher or easier, I don’t know as I myself am in middle school, but my younger siblings help with what I’m about to say. Subjects like math change every damned year, it’s always some new useless thing that you have to know how to do just to pass. As a student that was greatly stressed of it last year, I can assure that I spent a good amount of nights with barely any sleep, and still am. When I started online school, it was about a month before my exam test things. Now, not one teacher or adult in my school had ever done it before, so it was just you getting assignments and being expected to do them. I truly gave up and just stopped doing them, as it is really stressful and I couldn’t handle it. Again, things change and with that, the topics, teachers, and ways that students are taught.

@@joshbridges9234 the experience is different for everyone as there is no uniform system across the world so personally I'm from India so my school lasts around 6 hours(I have 8 classes each lasting 40 mins and 20lunch break) so of these 8 classes let's say on an average I get 2 to 3 homeworks.
Fancy meeting you here, Jen 😉❤
This is why we need strong teacher's unions.
@Mike Lopez yes but don't assign too much homeworks for students, we also need rest from school

But not everybody fits into that category, right? I mean the teacher listed the reasons why she didn’t assign homework.

I do hope so.
Wtf is wrong with those teachers? They can't even teach students how to use paragraphs.
There is solid research showing homework doesn't add much to learning.

Isn't that what school and the study guides are for? it's basically just a regurgitation from class and sometimes even it's bullshit we haven't learned yet so you have to search it up
There's always a time where I just search up answers to a question on a HW sheet.
Yeah Honestly homework is outdated now since you can go online and get the answers their is no one stopping u
If the teacher grades it, everyone will have to do it, even the students who understand, so no guarantee there either.

it sucks that terrible sleep, Long hours, stressful environments, and an overwhelming workload are the norm in American schools.

Can someone tell me why the absolute frick we don’t have teachers like this
Because the school system keeps kids busy so they can't learn about things that they are interested in or things they want to pursue a career in.
Also bc teacher get paid basically nothing and a result of that is they don’t give a $hit.
Most schools don't allow the teachers to not give homework. If I tell my boss I don't wanna give my students homework he`ll say I cant do that.
it depends the type of class that the teacher teaches...i might be wrong but id guess this teacher is teaching a group of students that are more focused on entering the workforce when they graduate as opposed to college so it probly benefits her students to have less homework and more time for real life and work experience. if this was an honors college prep course there would prob be much more homework..also this teacher i can bet has a great relationship with her students so they are proplly gettin more out of her class with no homework than they would out of a class with more hw and an out of touch teacher
Meanwhile in my school:

I agree, parents have a lot on their plate when they get off from work. Especially if they have more than one school age child. Regardless of single or married status it’s parents have a short amount of free time to spend with their children after dinner is done. Before you know it they have to get showered/baths and prepare for the next day. Parents jobs never end just because they leave their day/night paid job. 🤷🏾♀️

Teacher: "I dont give out homework because I respect there time outside of school"
*Everyone liked that*
Edit: This was purely meant to be a joke, I am sorry for anyone that is offended.
